ASA as DHCP server for WLC2106 and LAP

Hi,
First off i aplolgize for asking something that seems to have been asked before but i am getting conflicting answers and wanted someone to give a definitive answer.
Setup:
     ASA5505  ---------------- WS-C3750G -----------------WLC2106  -------------------------------AIR-LAP1131
(DHCP SERVER)           (simple config)          (dhcp proxy disabled)           (is requesting dhcp from ASA)
ASA5505 - ASA 8.2(1)
WLC2106 - 7.0.98.0 (tried 6.0.99.4 as well)
AIR-LAP1131 - 12.4(23c)JA
Problem:
The ASA5505 is giving addresses to multiple devices, i tested it with the AP plugged directly into the ASA and it worked great.  The problem is that the WLC2106 seems to be altering the DHCP requests somehow and thus making the ASA5505 not respond to them.  The AP gets an ip address and associates to the WLC if plugged into the 3750, or the ASA directly.  Just not when plugged into the WLC2106 ports.

I have read quite a few posts with people basically saying you cannot use the ASA as the DHCP server with the WLC because of how the WLC relays the requests.  BUT: (this is important)  There are some documents that say with WLC version 4.2 and above you have the option of turning off dhcp proxy mode to enable bridging mode thus elminating the probem and all DHCP requests get forwarded without modification.  Please see here for suggested solution to this issue:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a0080af5d13.shtml#topic2
*Interoperability issues can exist between a controller with DHCP proxy enabled and devices acting as both a firewall and DHCP server. This is most likely due to the firewall component of the device as firewalls generally do not respond to proxy requests. To work around this issue, disable DHCP proxy on the controller.
Help please:
I have tried this but maybe im missing something.  I have tried with proxy enabled and disabled.  Can anyone verify this is supposed to work for me please?  I input "config dhcp proxy disable" and verified proxy is now disabled.  Yet i do not see any responces from my DHCP server to my AP's requests when going through the WLC.  It works fine when plugging the AP into the ASA or 3750.  DHCP server is working.  Is the above suggested work around not a valid solution?  Did i miss something?  Do i need specific software versions on my devices?  Is this a bug in my software versions?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Let me know if anyone has questions.  Thanks,
Kyle

It keeps seeing the Discover messages but never gets any responce from the ASA.  What does that message mean "dropping REQUEST from STA with invalid mobility state 'Unassociated'" ?  I know the STA is the AP but why is it dropping the request?
Here is the debug output from the ASA:

So the ASA5505 is working when the AP is plugged directly into the ASA or a 3750 on the same network.  Only when connected through the WLC i do not see any messages on the ASA.  Is there something else i need setup on the WLC2106 besides turning off dhcp proxy?
Thanks,

  • DHCP Server for AIR-LAP521

    Hi,
i have a test setup with a WLC-526, a few AIR-LAP521 and a 2621 with an ios 12.2.31 . I' not abel to associate the 521 to the WLC. I have configured an DHCP server on the Router with option 43 ascii "ap-managent-address" of the WLC. The DHCP server packet debug looks like :
    DHCPD: DHCPDISCOVER from
    DHCPD: Sending DHCPOFFER to
    DHCPD: broadcasting BOOTREPLY to
    DHCPD: DHCPDREQUEST received
    DHCPD: Sending DHCPACK to
    DHCPD: broadcasting BOOTREPLY to
and about 20 sec later :
    DHCPD: DHCDPRELEASE message received
Has someone an idea how to configure a dhcp server for a 521 correctly. ?
    Thankx

    Hi Carl
It's the real address. And if you are using secondary IP's it's still the primary real address.

  • Single directory Server for Messaging and Portal

We are trying to unify our directory services.
At present, there two directory servers, one for iPlanet messaging 5.2 and another for Portal server 6.0.
Messaging's Directory server is v5.1 and Portal's Directory server is v5.2. Their BaseDN is same.
Now, What we are planning to do is as below.
    1. LDIF everything from Msgr Directory and import into Portal's Directory.
    2. Point Msg Server to the Portal's directory.
But, we are not sure what to export or how to tell messaging server to look at the Portal's Directory. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks
    Srini

What you are trying to do is non-trivial.
Setting the ldap server for user and groups on the mail server is easy enough -- look at the output of configutil and you will find the values of local.ugldap*
define the values you need to change.
    e.g.:
    local.ugldapbasedn
    local.ugldapbindcred
    local.ugldapbinddn
    local.ugldaphost
    local.ugldapport
    etc.
These are all listed in the messaging reference manual.
You need to ensure that the schemas of the two apps. match. For example, if you are using schema 1 for mail and schema 2 for the portal (quite likely), there will be a lot more work to do on the directory than simply moving the user entries accross and merging them.
Unless you have done this sort of thing before, or feel very comfortable and knowlegable about how the messaging server in partuicular works with LDAP, I would suggest that you seriously consider getting help from Sun Professonal Services.

  • Mac OS X attempts to poll server for PortMixerProvider and DirectAudioDevic

When running my applet on Mac OS X using Safari and Firefox, for the most part,
sound seems to work, but sometimes our game screen hiccups while the

It seems that the applet is searching in the server location of the

    incident.
As this is happening during game play, I need to find a solution to either stop these requests to the server or at least delay them until the end of the game session.

I have more background on this problem, but no solution. I see this happening everytime I try to record audio using my applet running under Firefox 3 (Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008061004 Firefox/3.0) and OS X 10.5.3.
The program runs perfectly using the AppletViewer.
I created a JAR file, sunaudio.jar, containing the com.sun.media.audio classes and the JavaSound SPI meta-files, put it in the same directory as my applet's JAR and changed my Web page to look like
    <applet ... archive="myapplet.jar,sunaudio.jar">
    </applet>
... and though I could see the browser request and receive the sunaudio.jar file from the server, it nevertheless requested com/sun/media/sound/DirectAudioDeviceProvider.class immediately thereafter.
Have you submitted a bug to Apple? If not, I will.

  • Using one controller as primary DHCP server for 2 or more controllers

    Here's my setup
2 - 5508 controllers (40 APs per controller) running 6.0.196.0 (100 user license per controller)
about 80 mixed - 1142 and 1252 APs, trying to put 40 APs on each controller
One subnet connects two controllers together on the management interface on port 1 on both controllers. 10.x.x.x addresses.
Port 2 on each controller (LAG not used) connects to a DMZ via dynamic interfaces for user traffic, 172.x.x.x addresses.
I want to use one controller for all clients to get their DHCP addresses from (no matter what controller their AP is on)
as a primary DHCP server (controller A as primary), then i'd like to point the clients to the other controller (controller B) to be used as a backup DHCP server in case Controller A fails. Also, the APs are setup to have the correct primary and secondary controllers under their high availability setting as well as the mobility group information.
I want to avoid splitting my DHCP scopes between controllers, and I don't have a DHCP server dedicated to this project, so the 5508s should be able to do the job. Or at least I thought.
When configuring the controllers with the proper DHCP scopes, this only seems to work for clients connecting to controller A. Clients on controller B don't get an address from controller A when pointing to that controller, in fact, the wierd thing is that debugging shows DHCP requests going out of port 2 (DMZ traffic) instead of port 1 (management) on controller B. Shouldn't they be going out of the interface that is specified with the DHCP configuration in the dynamic interface? And I don't have "override" turned on in the WLAN configuration so the DHCP server should be taken from the dynamic interface that the user resides on.
Mobility groups are configured correctly between the two controllers and both the control and data paths are up between the two controllers. Another wierd thing, both controllers management interfaces are on the same subnet, no acls or filters, when the mobility groups are configured, controller A can ping controller B, but controller B cannot ping A. The status still shows as UP/UP in the mobility members windows, but they use mPing which seems to work fine. Remove the mobility group configuration and ping works just fine between the boxes. I don't know if this is related to my DHCP issues, but it would seem that if I put the controller A's management address in the dynamic interface configuration for DHCP on controller B, my clients on B should get an address from A's DHCP pool. Controller A's dynamic interfaces all point to controller A's management interface and they work just fine.
I'm trying to load ballance my AP distribution between two boxes, and I'm also trying to have some controller redundancy.
Controller A works just fine, it's in production. Trying to add another controller B to talk A for DHCP is the issue.
    Anyone have any clues?
    -Blair

I guess i was under the impression that when mobility groups were cofigured, the lease time, along with other client information (mac address, IP address and such), would replicated from one controller to the other controller over the EoIP tunnel.  If that's not the case, then obviously I'll have to look elsewhere.
Also, does this mean that it will not work, or just that it's not recommended.  If it does work and I have to fix something, at least I can move on with my testing, all while pursuing a DHCP server.  It doesn't sound like using an AP as a DHCP server is any better than using the controllers for that same purpose.
Thank you for the quick response.

  • I want to disable the DHCP server on HH3 and use l...

Hi, i live in a flat with 5 other people so i have my HH3 connected to a linksys wrt5gl so that i can use the QoS capbilities of the linksys (tomato firmware). The linksys router can also limit bandwidth per ip address IF its also the DHCP server. When i disable the DHCP on the HH3 and enable it on the linksys the internet no longer works on any of the PC's, but if i have the DHCP on the hh3 i cannot limit bandwidth per ip on the linksys.
In the flat before this i managed to set this up fine (wasnt with the HH3- some other router) just need some advice on how to disable DHCP on the HH3 and enable it on the linksys wrt5gl whilst still being able to connect to the net.
Here is how its set up atm:
Phone line>>>HH3 (assighns IP through DHCP)>>>Linksys (data goes through QoS)>>>PC's/laptops/consoles in flat
Here is how i want it set up:
Phone line>>>HH3 (Acts as a modem)>>>Linksys (assighns IP through DHCP to allow bandwidth limiting /data goes through QoS)>>>PC's/laptops/consoles in flat
thanks in advance, sorry if this is hard to understand- im not so good at putting the problem into words
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
Don't know to be honest......but as an idea....you will have to disable DHCP server on the hub, apply a static ip to the Linksys, 192.168.1.100. You'll then need to set up DHCP on the Linksys....start ip 192.168.1.64 end 192.168.1.253, you'll need to add a subnet 255.255.255.0, then the gateway.....192.168.1.254 that's the ip address of the HH and that could be the real problem as normally the default gateway for DHCP on routers is the routers ip address.
So the chandes of it working are slim.....however you dont have to use your HH on your BT broadband you can use another make/model.
One option to use with that router is a Draytek 120 ADSL modem, which does PPOA to PPOE.

  • Unable to get ip address from DHCP server for Aironet 1130AG Access Point

I have a network in which DHCP server is enabled. I have read the installation guide also there it is mentioned that 1130G Access point will not have any staic ip assigned to it.So it will automatically get the ip from the DHCP server from the network. I have connected that from the network but it is unable to get the ip address from the same. The same thing i have configured in the netgear it is coming fine. I have seen the sonic wall and used the IPSU tool also from checking the ip address from Mac Address but i am not able to get the same. Please provide me some tips to check where i am wrong in configuration because the first web page also not coming because of the ip address.

    narendra,
I would suggest that the AP be connected to a laptop or desktop pc that would run a local dhcp server with a small scope setup...plenty of free ones on the web(this pc would obviously not be connected to your currnet network). This way you can watch the dhcp server hand the AP it's address (this can take a few minutes). Once you have the address use it to access the GUI and give the AP a static address (I find it good pratice to give all my autonomous AP's static addresses for ease of troubleshooting)...Hope that helps.

  • DHCP server for SnowLeopard

    Hey Guys,
is there any DHCP server application for SL?
Want to share the Internet through my laptop and not to set up IPs manually.
    Thanks in advance.

Jeff: I do use Wi-fi router for this purpose at home and office but there is some situations (especially when you're traveling) when I have a wireless network only. I have a device which I carry with me and want to use but it has a wired ethernet only.
John: thanks a lot for the direction. I've managed with the problem.
    1. en0 is reconfigured as 'DHCP with a manual IP' - at the least got an IP on laptop and bootpd started to listen the network ('netstat -an' shows open UDP 67 & 68)
    2. got 'bootpd[105]: DHCP DISCOVER [en0]:' in my syslog; no replies from the OS X (it's weird)
    3. changed 'replythresholdseconds' from 4 to 0 (details - http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304).
    4. got DHCP REQUEST in syslog
    5. enjoying DHCP and the Net access from my second device.

  • Windows 2008 DHCP Server Address Range and Exclusion Range

    Hi ,
I have a couple of Doubts regarding DHCp windows 2008  server
    1) The DHCP server  is given a static Ip in a network series eg(192.168.1.x)  starting Ip is 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254  ,
and if the range is from 192.168.1.10 to 1.250 ,
Should the DHCP server be not given an Ip in the DHCP range specified ?
ie  the DHCP server static IP should not be in the 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.250 , ( I have given as 192.168.20.5)
Even though the Exclusion range can be specified , Just want to know if this is best practice.
    2) And next setting up the range , should we give the entire network address as range ( eg 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254) and set exclusion range
or  take a particular series  (eg 192.168.10-100)
    Please advise
    Thanks in Advance
    Regards
    Anand M

Your DHCP server range should update automatically to the 192.168.0.x  subnet when you change your "Local IP address" to 192.168.0.1.   Be sure to use a computer that is wired to your router when you do this.  Also, be sure to click on "Save Settings", then wait (3 to 60 seconds) for the screen to refresh.  You will likely be disconnected from the router when you do this.  Do not worry about this.  Power down the router and your computer.
Next, wait 30 seconds, then reboot router and computer.  Your Local IP address and the DHCP server range should now have the same subnet.

  • AirPort Express DHCP Server for distribution of IP-addresses?

Does the AirPort Express have an DHCP server that distribute local IP-addresses like other Wi-FI router does? If so, how do I set it up in the AirPort Utillity?

+Seems I cant force it to only use a specific subset of the IP address range?+
That would be up to the Netcomm router to provide the IP addresses to be used. I'm not familiar with Netcom, but a router with the type of capability I was thinking of could be configured to provide a certain range of IP addresses to a given device based on the MAC address of the device.
The additional information that you just furnished indicates that you probably have a basic featured router designed for home network use that would not have this type of capability. In that case, the AirPort Express would not be able to be configured to Distribute a Range of IP Addresses. It would have to be configured as a "bridge" on the network and receive IP addresses from the main router.
Or, the AirPort Express might be able to distribute the IP addresses that you want if you configure it to Share a public IP address. The rub here is that you will have what is known as a Double NAT on your network. You'll have two devices handling DHCP on the network when there should only really be one. It may or may not function correctly as this is not a recommended configuration.

    How resolve this problem ?
    Thanks,
    Ladislav

    Hi Ladislav,
    Thanks for posting here.
Have you recently modified any DHCP configuration ? was only this client host recorded when this issue occurred ?
This seems like an attack from this client computer “ Monca-PC “, could you verify if this client computer has been installed antivirus and up the virus
    definition to date?
For troubleshooting ,you may temporarily deny lease address for this host by setting MAC based filtering on Windows server 2008 R2 host and try restarting DHCP service.
Meanwhile, we may need to collect more information form server and this problematic client ,please take look the DHCP event log and post any full error or warring
    event here for further investigation.

  • Where to start with a licensing server for Mac and Windows

    Hi all,
We have quite a mixture of OSX and Windows across the hundreds of computers we are running. We are on a volume key for all the CS3 products we buy but we still deploy them manually on a MAC but use specops (AD deployment) for the PC). There are some patches now for CS3 and for the MAC we would need to deploy it manually to a large number of machines.
What I want to do is a) set up a server for deploying software and managing the licenses and b) deploying packages for patches or getting the machines to connect to a deployment server.
I have been looking around the Adobe site but I can't find anything that outlines what I need to do to get started with this.
Thanks for any info that can be provided.
    Steven

Likely your best option is to go for some 3rd party software.
As for license tracking you could look into license statistics:

  • Using a single Content server for DMS and also for Archive link documents

    Hi,
We have Planned for a single content server for managing the documents in DMS, parallelly as DMS Standard SAP objects are not available for all SAP transactions, i have proposed for making use of SAP Archivelink funtionality to maintain the documentations where Std SAP DMS does not provide a Solution.
    so here the question is
can a single content server be used as a content repository for Both DMS and archivelink,
can any one having done this pls state if it is possible to create different or Many Content repositories for DMS, Archive link in the same server,
is this a virtual creation or can we assign each repository a specific storage space which it should not exceed.
    Thanks and regards
    Sathish

    Hi sathish,
-- Through the ArchiveLink docuemnt Management interface, an SAP sytem can use various content servers as storage media. similarly, one contnent server can be used by multiple SAP systems.
-- A Content server always has a single database assigned to it. A database can therefore be used by only one content server.
-- A databse is split into as many repositories as necessary. The design of the repository is mapped in the SAP system.A repository contains documents.
Depending on your requirements,(if u have limited documents or with low requirements)  you can use the same content server for both DMS and Archivelink.
The number of documents stored on the content server is limited only by the size of the database.
Its better to have an external content server for archiving purpose, if your database size is increasing. Since the archiving systems storage is not dependent on the database.
U can also refer to the below thread :
How to Archive SAP DMS Data?
    hope this helps....

SoFS is a good choice for a) Hyper-V and b) SQL Server (anything working with a big files like VHDX and MDF). For a bunch of a small files IIS has in a shared directories SoFS is not going to work and it's cleary said in the documentation. See:
