ASMLIB ; Linux is not that mature. Is it?

DB Version : 11.2.0.2
Platform : RHEL 6 (amd 64)
I had installed RAC 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10. It was easy.
For installing 11.2 on RHEL 6, our syadmins created LUNs for us. During Grid installation's ASM disk group creation for OCR and Voting disk part, we got "INS-30508 Invalid ASM disks" error.
After research i learnt that, with Linux you need to either label the disks using asmlib and make them "asm disks" or use custom udev rules file. I didn't have to do any of this for Solaris
Our Sys admins who have worked only on solaris before. So, they don't know how to configure rules file in Linux. And to make matters worse we there is no ASMLib for RHEL 6. Oracle Enterprise Linux 6 has ASMLib though but we don't have licence for it.
I read about ASMLib. This layer between block devices and OS is inbuilt in Solaris. This makes me think that Linux is not mature enough to be a production OS for Oracle.

I read about ASMLib. This layer between block devices and OS is inbuilt in Solaris. This makes me think that Linux is not mature enough to be a production OS for Oracle. As I understand it, Oracle is developed on Linux these days. Also, Oracle uses Linux for the fastest RAC cluster architecture in the world - Oracle's Database Machine.
If you you look at top500.org, you will see that over 90% of the fastest computer clusters on this planet, is running Linux. Not Solaris. Not Windows. Not AIX.
Is Linux immature? Anything but. It is one of the most advance operating systems available today. But it does require you to empty your cup of Solaris/AIX/Windows first, before using it. Linux is not a pretend Solaris. There may be a lot of commonality, but Linux is not Solaris, does not emulate Solaris and does not want to be like Solaris. So do not make the mistake in using Linux like you would Solaris, or expecting it to behave the same way.
And calling Linux immature when you and your colleagues lack the skills to use Linux correctly - that in fact is what is immature. Blaming the o/s instead of one's own inability and lack of understanding.

  • Linux --javac not found

i have installed java according to the instructions given to me in my linux os .
but when i compile i get
    bash: javac: command not found.
    i have installed in /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06.
i have compiled the program in /usr/java folder.
how do i solve it .

After you've installed the rpm for the java sdk, you will want to add the bin directory of the sdk to the PATH variable. One suggestion that has been given is to edit the file ".bash_profile" in your home directory. You can see the file by listing hidden files ls -all.
You may see something like the following within the file.
    PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATHTo add the bin directory to the path, simply add a colon, followed by the directory. I've written <whatever> to indicate that you must fill in the specifics, like version etc, of your jdk. The updated file becomes...
    PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/java/jdk*<whatever>/bin/
export PATHThis will allow you, and you alone, to run the javac command in the terminal without specifying the entire file path. If you are unfamiliar with Linux and you are the only user on the machine, then I suggest doing it that way.
If on the other hand you have a better understanding of Linux, and the machine and the sdk are to be shared by other users, you will want to make the bin directory available to the System PATH variable. Here's how I did that. Create a file "java.sh" inside the directory "/etc/profile.d". This directory is where some application specific startup scripts are found. The script that you will place here is run by /etc/profile and will set up the PATH variable to include the bin directory of the sdk. Note that you must be logged in as root to create a file within the directory. Also, be careful when creating script files for this directory. The file "java.sh" will contain a single line of text.
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk*<whatever>/bin/Once the file is created, be sure that permissions are such that all users can execute the file.
I've found information about setting up a Java development environment on a Linux OS here.

  • Ld-linux.so not found

    Hi,
I am trying to install a software on Solaris-10 (with x86 processor).
It is givng the error, "ld-linux.so not found".
And I was not able to find the file on my comp!
Is there any place where I can download a compatible version of the file?
    Thanks,
    Narendra

Apparently you're trying to run some software intended for Linux
on Solaris. That doesn't work. At least not with the current Solaris
10 GA release. It may change when "Project Janus" is released,
which apparently will enable running Linux x86 binaries on
    Solaris 10 x86.
Note that this feature may not be available this year:
    http://news.com.com/Major+Solaris+features+slip+to+2006/2100-1016_3-5705288.html
Try to find a Solaris x86 version of the software that you're trying
    to install.

  • Terminal to linux server (not web server) keyboard mapping ques

I have another post that is headed linux interface. I am not trying to repeat but am trying to clarify. I can access an a private server (mine) running a program in linux. It serves several terminals running windows xp using both anita and puTTy as emulations/interfaces(?). I have tried several configurations of terminal and X11 and can authenticate and get to the main menu page. Thereafter the function keys don't and the the cursor keys are erratic. Any help even a different shell suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you. I am using a MacbookPro for the access running 10.5.6

There are a couple nasty things in your code (not that your coding would be wrong).
Maybe better look into jakarta commons,
    http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/fileupload/
There are minor issues like \r, content length/chunk mode, //home,
path names, bytes-to-String without encoding. Also officially "--" is not allowed to occure inside an HTML/XML comment, hence some people use <!-- ======= -->.

  • Linux is not ready for the desktop - Mandriva devs

I just read this in the latest DistroWatch Weekly:
You wouldn't expect something like this to happen at any time, let alone on the eve of Mandriva Linux 2007 release. Last week, two Mandriva developers went on record saying that "Linux is not ready for the desktop". In a web log post entitled Why I'll never use Linux for my main desktop, Vincent Danen concluded: "This kind of thing is precisely why, for me, Linux belongs on the server. Now if those kernel-developing idiots would get their act together and give us a 2.6 kernel that was a) stable and b) supported for more than a week, then I'd really be pleased." Another Mandriva developer, Fabrice Facorat, agreed. In a post called Linux ready for Desktop? Of course not!, he had this to say: "For me when you have control over the environment and the hardware, Linux is ready: think servers, workstations, thin clients, kiosks. However when you have no control on the hardware, Linux is not ready because it somewhat lacks flexibility."
There you have it, right from the horse's mouth! From two guys who have been working for a Linux company, developing a popular desktop Linux distribution, for years! Yes, that's right, Mandriva Linux is not ready for your desktop! Don't waste your money buying it!
One really has to wonder about the future of a company which happily asks Gaël Duval to leave, yet is quite pleased to keep developers who publicly hint that they consider Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox and other kernel developers "idiots"! A perfect pre-release PR, non?
No comments... I just cannot find any words.    :?

ughhhh. Mandrake have always sucked at marketing, they do themselves no favours. IMHO, they're becoming more and more irrelevant with each release. Once upon a time I might have reccomended mandrake to a newbie, but certainly not now. They've got great assets and a good base. The *potential* to become a good distro. But each release, stupid bugs make it through, and the improvements seem negligable.
Once of their better features is their huge repository of packages -- which is horrendously poorly advertised. You'll find nowhere in the GUI's or desktop a place to access their 'contrib' repo which is the equivalent of our extra, and contains a huge amount of packages. Also an important point for mandriva has been mandrakeusers.org/mandrivausers.org, which has been a huge community offering great support for newbies to mandrake, rather than directing them into the expensive mess that is known as the mandriva club. Mandriva have totally ignored this resource, and have made no attempt to support this board, upon which you'll find, I have quite a reasonable post count from back in my early days of Linux (mandriva 8.2 was first distro), and continuing on to now. It also exemplifies their (lack of) decent customer support.
The distro has had countless irritating bugs which pervaded through releases, and all sorts of utterly stupid ones that should never have made it through the testing process. They do little to help themselves with this. I've reported countless bugs, and all of them have been ignored for months. On their last release, they included the old rt2500 module, which at the time, hard locked SMP machines, and made my mandriva unbootable as it was loaded on boot. I filed a bug, marked it as high priority and it was utterly ignored for more than 6 months, so much so I had forgotten about it. Other bugs and emails have suffered a similar fate.
It's GUI tools, have become a complete mess, for example wireless, in 2006 release, was absolutely horrendous to configure, and had no support for WPA -- wpa_supplicant wasnt even on the CD's so people could configure it manually.
It's good to see they're finally ditching their old desktop theme, which they dragged on for far too long. It's always been absolutely hideous.
Their business model emphasises the 'club' far too much, making it difficult to even find a download on their site for the standard version, which has "Free" tacked all over it, as if to try and make you feel like a cheapskate. Doesnt help how they change their release cycle frequently either.
The stupidity of Mandriva just confounds me. PR like this does nothing to help them. They criticise the developers for not providing a 2.6 kernel that is stable. Maybe mandriva should look in their own backyard, and offer a distro that's remotely stable. Last time I used it, it had a horrendously old udev, hotplug, and a very slow hardware detection system. It still used bootsplash, which has been unmaintained for over two years, and included supermount, which Con Kolivas has disowned and again, has abandoned for years. They're hardly doing themselves favours patching their kernels with this out of date crap. Nor do they update them, I dont see mandriva offering updates to newer ones, which would no doubt fix many of the reported issues.
Alternatively they could do what other distros do and pitch in and help. Many of the kernel developers are also employees of other vendors, or have an important part in other distros, such as Daniel Drake and Robert Love. It'd be great for mandrake if they employed a kernel developer, because it's clear THEY are the ones who are the idiots.
I have no idea how they made it out of their bankrupcy, with the lacklustre state of their miserable distro, I think their days are numbered, unless they do something to change around their image and fix their product.
    ok, im done.

How come although iPads are getting more powerful, the iOS apps from apple are so mediocre and just not that great? We spend all this money for the latest ipad and all we get is these $5 video and music apps from apple. Why create the iOS platform and only offer so so apps like IMovie and GarageBand ? While other developers are offering much better apps like pinnacle studio for video, Cubasis and Auria for music production, apple has not showed much growth in terms of innovation. While there's nothing wrong with making an app like GarageBand where "anyone " can make a song, how about something for real musicians or an app not so basic as it get for video editing? After spending 0ver $700 on an ipad I'd be willing to spend more than $5 for a better video or audio app.

First, try a system reset although I can't give you any confidence.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.
