Aspect Ratio Help

I've tried to find this on my own, but to no avail. I am using a Canon XHA1 and shot footage in 16:9 HD format at 24fps. Imported it in using default Windows Video Import tool, then brought into Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 on Windows Vista.
The footage looks distorted (4:3) no matter what project settings I use. I tried using the Intrepret Footage per Adobe help, and while that does seem to get rid of the 4:3 aspect ratio, the preview window then for some reason shows a much smaller widescreen preview surrounded by a lot of black box.
I tried outputing a sample file, and sure enough, the final output shows a smaller version of the footage with more then normal black box surrounding it.
Any help in understanding what I'm doing wrong, or how to import the video correctly into Premiere is much appreciated.

1. Should I capture with Premiere and not Windows Import? If so, where do I specify HDV split? Not sure what that means.
2. When and where do I choose the 1080i30 project setting? I downloaded the 24f Canon presets and those show up, but I wasn't sure what to choose initially when opening Premiere (either a Canon preset or the 1080i30).
I'm fairly new at this so step by step is kind of what i need to figure this out.

Aspect ratio help for a newbie?

I've got a Sony DCR SR-32 camera (please don't laugh ) and shooting in its HQ mode, (9Mb/s) and 16:9 aspect ratio.
I can import the footage into iMovie and make a movie with no problems. But I've just bought FCE and am struggling to get the footage imported at the correct 16:9 aspect ratio. After trawling the discussions I've tried the log and transfer method, and all the other relevant discussion on importing AVCHD files directly into FCE but no success (I get file opening error ?). So I'm bringing the footage into iMovie, exporting it from iMovie as an FCE XML file and opening that using PAL anamorphic or NTSC anamorphic Easy setups.
Even so, I've got what looks like 16:9 video squeezed into a 4:3 aspect ratio with black boarders on either side padding it out back to the 16:9 size.
I'd welcome any advice other than "get a new camera "

Hi Tom, I seem to have a similar problem, not sure if you've seen this, but I have the new canon vixia hg 21 which is avchd and FCP 6 isn't recognizing it either. Using Imovie to recognize the files works fine, the problem is that when you export from imovie '08 into FCP via xml, it imports fine, but I also get the same display issue with the black bars surrounding the footage, only in the canvas. It appears fine in the viewer and in it's own sequence in the timeline. But when you mix the different camera footage together, the other being the Canon XH A1, it appears as a different aspect ratio??? What the?
ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

Wide screen aspect ratio help

hi everyone im new in final cut pro, and i need some guidance, help or tutorial on how to achieve the widescreen aspect ratio to give the video more like a film look and feel, i need to know how to do this without distorting the video or cropping or making it look stretchy it if its possible. A tutorial would be awesome please if someone can help me, i would really appreciate this i looked around for this but i cant really find anything (i might have been looking in the wrong places :[ ) thanks

im not sure this are the dimensions 1280 × 720 i think (im not too sure) it was wide screen. for example if i used my iphone for in landscape mode i think it comes out wide screen right? so then how would i do it not sure what really but is there any chance that without it having to be shoot wide screen make it wide screen without it looking bad ??

questions:
1) so what is the aspect ratio if i change the "standard-defintion" to read HD or Hi-Definition?
2) preface: i created a Widescreen project using iMovie HD 5.0.2 that was shot at 16:9. i created a DVD from the iMovie project and it is 16:9. i "shared" my finished project and selected Full at the first prompts and got a dialogue saying something about the full quality of my project being saved; it produced a QT .dv file of the size of my project (about 3 gb) which is correct, afaik.
question: why is my exported [at] Full dv quality QT .dv file only 720 x 480? instead of 850 x 480?

while i'm asking questions: i'm about to export that .dv file to H.264, however i wish to reduce the view size by half --for a lower size-- how do i correctly assign a new properly reduced 50% size so that my aspect ratio is preserved only smaller by half?

A widescreen standard-definition TV picture is 850 pixels across by 480 pixels down
A standard NTSC picture is 640 x 480
BUT, DV format saves video in a 720x480 ratio. DV pixels are not square, however. When shooting standard TV, the pixels are higher than they are wide and appear 640x480. When shooting widescreen, the pixels are wider than they are tall, thus giving a 16x9 (850x480) appearance.
As to your specific question about H.264, try exporting to a custom size of 425 by 240.

I know that i am missing something totally easy here...but none the less I cant figure it out. How do I use the crop aspect change short cut key (x) without flagging my photos?
I have made sure that I am in crop mode. When I hit the x key it flags the photo to discard.

OH MY GOD. Pixel aspect ratio HELP.

ok plain and simple, what should you composition settings be in after effects, in order to import the finished composition into adobe encore cs3, without any stretching, distortion, pixellation, etc.
i am about to kill myself with this issue.
all the settings i try either squish, stretch, distort, leave black bars on the top and bottom or left and right, or pixellate the image.
create a AE composition from scratch, draw a perfect circle on the background using mask. NOW HOW DO YOU GET THAT PERFECT CIRCLE INTO ENCORE WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE AN OVAL OR PIXELLATING THE EDGES??!!?!?!???!??!???!??!?

Are you working in PAL or NTSC?

Basically, stick with the PAL/NTSC presets and you can't go wrong. Just remember that computer monitors use square pixels and DVDs do not. So any PAL or NTSC file you look at on a computer monitor 1:1 will look slightly distorted, but will be fine on DVD.

I'm posting this in hopes that someone can help me solve an aspect ratio issue with a project that I have to finish by tomorrow.
I'm trying to avoid having to re-edit the entire thing.
I shot the project with my Nikon D7000 DSLR. in 720p 30p (29.97)
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (the trial version). I have the full version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The reason I was working with the trial is that CS3 can't handle the H.264 MOVs that the D7000 records.
You can work with a timeline, but if you try to export anything, it never works. I always have to convert my footage to ProRes MOVs with MPEG Streamclip before I can work with them is CS3. That takes a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space. After much research, I found out that CS5 is the way to go for DSLR footage. I just need to save up my pennies for the upgrade.
So I thought I'd edit this short (1 minute) project with the trial to see how CS5 works with the D7000 footage.
Upon installing the trial program, I found that the project presets were limited. I knew this ahead of time because it's clearly stated on the Adobe's website.
But I wasn't aware how limited they are.
Since "DSLR 1280x720p 30p" is not an option with the trial, I was going to use HDV 720p 30p. But that was not an option either!
So basically, my only option for 16x9 30p was "DV NTSC Widescreen". It's my understanding that this is 864x480 (in square pixel aspect ratio) or 720x480 (in widescreen pixel aspect ratio) I needed the output file to be 864x486. I downsized the footage to 69% in the "Video Effects: Motion" setting so it looked correct in the project. I didn't think about those extra 6 pixels until I outputed the file and saw thin black lines on the top and bottom. My guess is that Premiere is adding black pixels because my project is technically 720x480 (1.2121)
Any thoughts on how I can get a clean 864x486 export? I'd rather not re-edit the whole thing...which I would have to do in CS3 after I spent a few hours converting the original files in MPEG Streamclip. I don't know if there is a way to export something out of CS5 and then open a new project in CS3 to make this work.

On export, just crop a few pixels off of each side; that'll let the image scale correctly to the output frame size without black bars.
I'm not running the trial, but you should still be able to create a custom sequence preset using the Desktop editing mode. Just switch over to the General tab when you create a new sequence, and choose "Desktop" from the editing modes. Set the rest of the parameters as you need them.
Even easier: once you've imported your footage, just drag a clip to the New Item icon at the bottom of the project panel; a sequence will be created matching your footage parameters. You can edit at full-resolution, and then export to your desired frame size when complete--you'll probably still need to crop a few pixels (in the Export Settings window) to eliminate the black bars.

IDVD is producing DVDs which chop the edges off my video. I have tried changing the aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9 but it hasn't helped. My TV is definitely on the correct settings. How can I solve this?

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened. I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

Aspect ratio issues with SD box and no help from Verizon

I just renewed my 2 year contract which included a free box but a billing screwup resulted in repeated charges for the box. A CS rep credited the account and said I had the wrong box and she would send out a new one.
i had a 7100 Motorola HD box. I have an older television set (that cannot control aspect ratio) and I have never had HD service but this was the box I was sent by Verizon as part of my contract. Why they felt it had to be changed I don't know, but ..... the box they sent was a 2500 SD box which does not give me an acceptable picture.
It's totally random. Some channels are 16:9. Some are overzoomed 4:3. The FIOS channel bar at the bottom is partially off the screen and the content is clipped around the edges. Commercials are totally random in size and appearance.
The # key on the remote does not work. There is no option in Settings to change the aspect ratio.
CS was ZERO help. They concluded that I had to either deal with the scattershot image sizes and clipped image content or go buy another television. SERIOUSLY VERIZON?
I couldn't get an answer as to why the box I was sent by Verizon as part of my original contract that provided a perfectly acceptable image had to be replaced with a box that doesn't provide squat. I have had Verizon service for approximately 7 years with this same television and this is the first time I've been given a box that can't produce an acceptable image and a remote that can't resize. So why now?
This smells like a bait and switch, or an attempt to get customers to pay for an upgraded box for a service they don't want just to get an acceptable picture. I live in an urban area and there is plenty of older equipment in these homes. So are customers like myself just being told even though you pay a significant amount of money for a Triple Play you are only getting 2 parts of the service?
I find it hard to believe there isn't some way to make the box or the remote change the image size. Can anyone help?

but yes, our 2500 sd box, basically the 4:3 standard non HD box broadcasts to fit a 4:3 TV.. now some channels will have the black bars on top and bottom to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio.. you'll notice this if you run the 2500 box on a flat screen.. if you have it in 16:9 ratio on a flat screen it looks stretched.. the only way to watch regularly is in 4:3 mode.. which basically has the image with bars on all sides.. or you can zoom it and lose a portion of the image.. but it's because the box thinks you're using a 4:3 sd tv so the boxes appear on top and bottom so it can still fit the wider image it's filmed in.. so with flat screens you need the HD box i guess.. unless there is something i'm missing but there isn't a setting that i can find to change how the box exports the image for a flat screen or 4:3. I know the HD boxes have an 'SD Override' option.. which i guess tells the box you're not using a 4:3 tv anymore.. but that option is not on the 2500 SD box.. believe me i looked.. but this is all in reverse for your issue anyhow as you're having trouble with the SD box on an SD TV... which yeah, if you run SD the quality of picture is not as good as the HD programming.. so please let us know what they say to do for you.

Quicktime aspect ratio problems? Help!

I'm trying to make a QT from my Avid Express pro 5.7. The aspect ratio looks great in Avid, but when i export (720 x 480 for DVD burning) the picture gets slightly squashed. Can anyne help me with this? I'm stumped!

Help With LightRoom Aspect Ratio Settings

I have created some custom Aspect Ratio settings to the crop tool but I now want to delete them as I entered them wrong.
Can anyone tel me how I can delete the custom ones I have made or reset back to defaults.
I am guessing they are written out to a file somewhere.

Need help changing size and aspect ratio for 500+ images

Thank you for reading this! I have about 500 images of people in different poses. They're all extracted on a transparency as PNGs. They vary in aspect ratio, dimensions and position of the person within the frame - for some the feet are very close to the bottom of the frame and for some, they're higher up. I need to equalize all 3 of these qualities, so that if superimposed, they look like a video unfolding with the same zoom. My ideal size would be 800x800 at 300ppi.
Is there a way to batch even a part of the process and keep the png format? I had the images in PSD initially but they were too massive so creating catalogs with them was prohibitive.
If not possible to do a batch, what would be the best (easiest) and fastest way to do it? I'm thinking that maybe creating some template where an oval shape the size of the head can help create consistency of the size of the person and a line that helps set up the distance from the bottom?
I so appreciate any help you have to offer. Part of my problem is that I don't know what these processes are called so I don't even know what to search for. If you can even name the actions that I need, it would be of great help. I already paid a designer to do the extraction and they were supposed to do this formatting as well and they didn't so my budget is shot. I'm hoping that if I understand what the steps are, I can do them myself.

Help with turning off in-camera selected aspect ratios - Please!

I shoot a Olympus e-P2. It allows me to change the aspect ratio of the file i.e. 4:3, 16:9 etc. I like to use this feature as 'masks' when I shoot to help with composition. When I open the RAW file in bridge or Camera Raw, this pre-selected aspect is automatically cropped from the file. I want to see the entire file, not the cropped version. The Oly software gives me this option, but I can't figure out how to turn off this 'feature' in Bridge or Camera Raw. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your adobe product is only doing what the camera data told it to. However, in the raw converter you can try activating the crop tool then right click the image and choose to remove the crop. That may work (or not).

Pasting problem between sequences. Aspect Ratio changes. Help

Hi. I'm fairly new to FCP so be patient with me. I shot HD using the Panasonic format 1080i. I transferred the footage from the SDHC cards using Apple Pro Res 422, 1920x1080. Everything was going fine in editing until I tried to copy and paste clips from one sequence in the timeline into another sequence. The aspect ratio changed in the clips I pasted. I tried to figure out what to do by looking at Sequence Settings and Clip Properties but to no avail.
Any suggestions? I am building separate sequences and then need to paste these together to make a QT movie or DVD for client so need help asap. I've previously worked with JVC HD cams using the 720p24 codec and never had this trouble when cutting and pasting.

This is not weird at all. One sequence is set to use square pixels (1920x1080) the other is using non-square pixels (1440x1080).
You need to fix the non-square pixel timeline.
The simplest to understand method to fix the non-square sequence issue is to create a new sequence with the proper settings then copy your material over from the non-conforming sequence.
To get a new sequence with the proper settings (if you have FCP7) all you need to do is "create new sequence" then drop one of the clips into the new empty timeline. If the settings do not match, when the program asks you if you want to change the sequence to match the clips, say yes.
Then select all the clips in the non-conformed timeline and copy and past them in the new correct timeline.

Help with setting aspect ratio

Could someone please help me with an aspect ratio problem. I have just updated to iMovie 6 and want to work with an existing movie project created from iMovie (version before the ilife 5 version). On opening the project in the new version it is in widescreen and I would like to convert back to a regular format (regular display format) I would be most grateful for any help

Well, I guess I thought the video in Motion needed to look more rectangle (16x9) than square (4:3). Since it did in FCP. And my FCP sequence setting>Aspect Ratio says NTSC DV 3:2
I am used to working with plain MiniDV 4:3. I shoot with Sony PD150. I don't understand or never had to deal with Aspect Ratios. This project they wanted a widescreen look so I switch the camera to 16x9.
I don't think it is the real 16x9 but like I said I don't know about this stuff or why my camera has 16x9 on in if it is not the real thing.
