Asset management for Plug-ins

After Effects performs certain kinds of asset management for a project. When you import an image or footage, the project keeps a file-reference to it, sometimes relative. You can "Collect Files..." and gather them all to one place. Handy!
Is there any way for a plug-in to get in on that action?
For my effect plugin "omino_python", which runs a python script to draw on a layer, I refer to external scripts.
It seems the best way to do this, for now, is use a custom parameter, or maybe options dialog, to select a file, and save the file path as parameter (or options) data.
Is there a way to find the project's path? Then the file path could at least be relative. It seems best to NOT save the whole script as parameter data; I want the user to own their own files for revision control and what not.
What I'd love is a PF_Param_FILE_ASSET type, and let AE manage it. Be part of the "Collect Files..." club. Is there anything sort-of close?

for starters, lookup PF_Cmd_GET_EXTERNAL_DEPENDENCIES along with PF_OutFlag_I_HAVE_EXTERNAL_DEPENDENCIES.
i don't know if that flag will cause AE to gather the said files when doing a "collect", bet hey, that's the closest thing i know of to what you're looking for.
if that doesn't help, i would have stored both the path and the script in a custom param (or sequence data).
then if the file pointed to by the path exists, then you can discard the internally kept copy of the script. if it doesn't exist you can ask the user where to save it, and create a file the user can edit externally.

After a great deal of searching I ran across the suggestion to disable all plug-ins and then, one by one, enable them until finally the problem was solved. I am not sure which plug-in was causing the problem, as I am satisfied to have the problem solved. I am going to leave the rest of the plug-in disabled.

  • Very Long Lag at "Scanning for Plug-ins" in PS CS3

PS CS3 lags for several minutes while the splash screen displays "Scanning for Plug-ins". PS loads and seems to work properly after the 2 - 3 minutes lag, but it's annoying.
I have deleted the preferences file, the plug-ins cache file and even the entire settings file in PS. I've tried shift-ctl-alt. I've chkdsk'd my primary drive.
This is a fresh install on a new os install (winxp sp2, current updates).
Any ideas? I swapped mobos to improve performance and this is a drag.

Update: Connecting the scanners to complete driver initialization did not resolve the problem. Even rolling back my changes and removing the Nikon Scan and Epson Scan software did not resolve the slowdown at the PS plugin scan.
I noticed that the Epson software took 4 minutes to load when I ran the app (Epson Control Panel or something like that). This is really strange. I removed the scanner software but that has not resolved the problem. I do have a network HP all-in-one. (OfficeJet 7310xi). Does that have twain drivers? Nothing shows up under scannners in control panel.
This is really weird. My system has a dual-core processor and 4 gig of memory.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 - takes over 4 minutes to load - hangs on "Scanning for plug-ins..."

Since mid-February 2014, having problems with both Photoshop Elements 10 and Photoshop CS4 extended (v 11.0.2) - both take around 4 minutes to load, when previously they loaded very quickly.
In Photoshop CS4 there is no activity on-screen for 2 minutes, then it hangs on the start up screen for another two minutes on "Scanning for plug-ins." Similar issue with Elements 10.
I am running on Windows 8.1, 64-bit. I also have Lightroom 5.4 installed.
Any help gratefully received, as this is driving me mad!

UPDATE: After having had my iPod plugged in for TWO HOURS, it has finally been detected by iTunes.

  • "scanning for plug ins" it never finds....

I installed photoshop elements 12 but it doesn't come up, when I click on the icon it says "scanning for plug-ins" and never does anything else.  what should I do to get it working?

Without proper system info nobody can tell you anything.

  • Enabling AU Nodes for Plug-Ins

Hi, I am having problems getting my AU Plug-in components working in Logic Pro 9. I have done pretty much everything imaginable up to this point but the components won't show up in the Audio Units list for Inserts. The plug-in's I have are ReFX Nexus 2 and Tone2 Gladiator (all latest versions) and I am running Logic on OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3. The problem has boiled down to the inability to check/select the 'Nodes' inside the Audio Units Manager; the check boxes under 'Logic' can be selected and the plug-ins appear to have passed the test. Only AU's with selectable nodes show up in the Inserts panel. I tested this by downloading a plug-in called TAL-DUB II that was shown as an example in a video for installing plug-ins and after placing it's component in the components folder it showed up right away. Every AU in the Audio Units Manager that has an active node shows up and is functional except the ones whose nodes cannot be clicked/selected including three that came with Logic: 'AUAdioFilePlayer', AUNetReceive', and DLSMusicDevice'. In the AU manager, under 'Type' all the ones listed as 'effects' have selectable nodes but 'generators' and 'instruments' do not. I'm sure it's something very simple but if someone can explain what that something is it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Nodes have nothing to do with it - or are you using any plugins from a second Mac?
Most 3rd party Instrument plugins do not have noding capabilities, but that has no bearing on whether they can be used on a single machine.
If you have a second Mac, you can install plugins on that and use those in a project running on the first Mac, this is known as *Distributed Audio Processing.*

AV3software.com has all the plug-ing you are looking for, all centralized in one website all available via download at a very attractive price.

  • Preferred package naming conventions for plug-ins?

Every combination seems to be in use already...
    VIM plug-ins are vim-plugin_name
    XFCE plug-ins are xfce4-plugin_name-plugin
    GIMP plug-ins are (mostly) gimp-plugin-plugin_name
I plan on making some plug-in packages for a application what dose not currently have any available. So as the topic says what's preferred package naming convention? I personally like the GIMP format best but just figured I'd ask first (should really be in the guidelines IMO).

Ok well I guess I'll use the third option for now them.
While we're talking about naming conventions I was just searching for the python cairo library noticed binding library's could do with some guidance to...
    cairo-perl
    pycairo
    ruby-rcairo
IMO language-library_name would be a nice guideline.

  • Manual update for plug ins and extensions not working

I've just noticed that when I attempt to manually check for updates either in plug ins and/or extensions from the gear symbol drop down screen that I get the drop down screen, but, the check for updates function does not work. It just sits there with nothing happening. I have to close the screen to get out of that function. Anybody know anything about this?

Thanks you for your comments. I would mention that this problem just started with the update to FF 37.0.4 I tried restarting FF in safe mode with no effect on the above mentioned problem. Any other thoughts?

  • Mainstage 3 for Plug-Ins Only vs Mainstage 2

I use garageband for recording and read that I could use the Jam Packs by just buying Mainstage 2. I don't care about loops, I only want more software instruments to use when I plug my midi drum set in. I need to upgrade my OS to get Mainstage 2, so I ordered an OS upgrade. Now, I see that Mainstage 2 has been replaced by 3 and I do not have the RAM required for 3 (4GB). I do not want to buy RAM now in addition to the OS I didn't even really want to buy. Will Mainstage 2 still be available? Could I just buy Mainstage 3 and only use the plug-ins even if my cpu is too slow for the program itself? Bonus: how many more drum kits does 3 have vs. 2?
    THANKS!!!!

Regardless of what happens more RAM is always a good thing... and given how cheap RAM is you should always want to add more.
If you have already bought MainStage 2 it will still be available in the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store app. If you don't have 2 then you can no longer buy it from the store.
You asked if you can use just the plug-ins of MainStage 3 even if your CPU is too slow. The problem with that is that it's the plug-ins that require a fast machine. Launching the app isn't going to be the problem on a slow machine... it'll be as you start to add plug-ins. If you you very sparingly use plug-ins then it should be OK.
Not sure about how many kits as I still need to download the additional content.
    Good luck...

  • Taking forever to open PSE 10- searching for plug-ins?

I'm back, Community Professionals!  Why does the Photoshop 10 take so long (5min.) to look for all the plug-ins every time I try to use it?  Once it lets me know that 3 are unavailable... the program shows up on the screen and I can start working.  It sure slows down the creative juices.  What is the difference between the Editor and PSE?  I have two Icons on my tool bar.  Only Editor opens.  I have not used it since I talked to you last in November.  My old PSE 6 won't recognize my scanner/printer anymore (must be that newer Twain that I installed) but the new software PSE10 does.  I know what you will say... it's the plug-ins.  Anything else you can comment on in PSE 10 that I will need to address?  I know that yoiu don't work for PS.  Thanks, OMI

Yes, I think you damaged it pretty badly by removing those plug-ins and trying to open it. Here's what I would do:
    1. Uninstall via the uninstaller.
    2. Go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 settings
Also anything beginning with com.adobe. that mentions Organizer. If you are using lion your username>library is a hidden folder. To see it, in the Finder, click the Go Menu and then hold down the Option key. It will appear in the menu just below the little house for your account.
    3. Reinstall PSE.
    4. Repair permissions before starting PSE, and then launch the editor directly, not the welcome screen. It's this file:

  • Doc for plug-ins

    Hi all,
This is more of a "design/structural" than a "what button do
    I press" question.
I have a rather large application that has a "base" .chm file
associated with it (already quite huge). Our customers may also
purchase plug-ins, but won't necessarily all have the same set. So
while one user's application may look like this:
    Main-app
    +plug-in A
    +plug-in B
    another's may look like this:
    Main-app
    +plug-in A
    +plug-in E
I distribute a .chm file with the main-app.
In the table of contents for my main app's .chm file, I'd
like to have a section called "Plug-Ins" that could be dynamically
populated. I'd like to achieve that by distributing a small set of
help with each plug-in that could be 'dropped' into a help
directory and extend the help system after restarting.
Since we're dealing with compiled help systems, I think I
already know the answer. I don't think this is possible right now,
but has anyone had a similar problem/solution? Any options for
    dynamic loading at runtime?
    Alternately:
    1) If I have to do separate .chm files for the main-app and
each plug-in, can I at least force them to open in the same help
    window?
    2) If I have separate .chm files, I'd like to have
cross-references from the plug-in projects to the main-app project.
Are cross project references possible without entangling the two
component projects? (I'd be fine if the links in the plug-in help
didn't work if used without the Main-app help in place.)
    Thanks in advance,
    -Greg

    Thanks again, Elisa & Anne.
Wanted to give you an update.
I think you're right, copying the target .chm to the current
project is just for setting up the cross references. However, if I
have lots of subprojects, this will make for a nightmare on
Windows, given that I have to copy a 25 or 30 Mb file into each
subproject just to do cross-reference. (If I could set up a unix
type link on a windows box, that problem would go away, but
    alas...)
So I've arrived at the following choices:
    1) Stick with a .chm for the main project, create stubs for
each plug-in project, but don't do any cross referencing between
projects. <<sigh>> This lets me have a single TOC, and
I can distribute doc for each plug-in separately, so it looks like
one system. I'd then always regenerate the master project to get an
    updated .h file.
    -or-
    2) Looking at a merged Webhelp project. I've been posting
over in that forum, and have already tried the process using some
ideas on Peter Grainge's site. The advantages are that you can do
true cross project references, distribute new projects without
having to create stubs in the "main" project, plus you get true
cross platform compatibility. I'm sorting out how to merge .h files
and use them to call help sections in webhelp, but if that works, I
may have to tease things apart and go that route.
So while not a 100% success, I've at least found the
boundaries, and I can decide what to do.
Thanks very much for all your help!
    -Greg

  • I want to create a different plug-in . Could you please send me an email adress to contact about my questions for plug-ins?

    Dear Sir / Madam,
First of all my english is not good enough and apologise for that. I want to create a kinda different java plug-in on mozilla . I ve been playin a textbase game for many years. However it takes many hours to play it manually. I d like to create a script for that and think script will work by itself (it will read 3d codes paste them automatically, it will click some words in website automatically etc.) I saw that one on your system its called "omerta rankscript". Could you tell me how i can start to do this and ? is it easy or how long time it takes to create a new plugin like this? also may i see the codes of this plug-in(omerta rankscript)?
    Thank you for your consideration.
    Best Regards,
    Zafer ATABAY

Depending on what you want to develop, you could consider an ''extension'' or a ''userscript''. A plugin probably is not the right type of add-on to create.
For suggestions and assistance with these different kinds of add-ons:
    Extensions:

  • ID CS3: Adobe icon resources for Plug-Ins?

    Hi,
I didn't find anything mentioned in the SDK documentation and a forum search didn't turn up anything either, so I assume that the proprietary Adobe icons are not available to be used in a Plug-In, right?
I am thinking about things like forward/backward icons (DataMerge) or the trash can. While we can of course use our own icons, it would be nice to use the default ones so that the user interface of the Plug-In looks consistent with the InDesign UI.
    thanks,
    Andrea

One way to find the resource IDs:
    Start InDesign debug build
Menu "DevTools" / "Panel Edit Mode"
    click desired kDMUIPanelPreviewPageMinusWidget
Menu "DevTools" / "Save Widget Description ..."
