Assigning a variable name to a variable

How do I make something like the following work? In JavaScript I could use eval().
String a1 = "a";
String a2 = "b";
String a3 = "c";
String a4 = "d";
String a5 = "e";
for (int j=1; j < 6; j++) {
System.out.println(a+j); }
//meaning a+j = a1 through a5
THAT SHOULD PRINT: a, b, c, d, e

I think that for that what you are looking for is a java interpreter:
Interpreter interpreter = new Interpreter();
interpreter.set("anObject", anObject);
evalString = "anotherObject = new MyClass(anObject);";
interpreter.evaluate(evalString);
Object extraObject = intepreter.get("anotherObject");
and so on.

  • Selection Variables / Name of the Variable in a Variant

    Hi,
    I am trying to replicate / create the same variant from PRD back to DEV.
    But in PRD for the variant, there are values for attributes. (Selection Variable is having T and D)
    Number of variables are available for Name of the variable (f4 values)
    But these values are not available for the same variant in DEV.
    How can i bring the values for selection variables and name of the variables in DEV.
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Ravi

    Ravi,
    you have to include the variant into a transport request than you can transport to the other system. In general, variants not transported automatically when you create a program, you have to include the variant into the request if you want to use in another system also.
    You can do this by:
    SE38 --> Variants --> Utilities --> Transport request

  • Setting session variable names based on variables in a loop

    I am trying to set up a loop that sets up a list of variables based upon a list, by looping over the list and setting the session.NAME:
    <CFLOOP list="#fieldnames#" index="fieldname">
    <cfset session.#fieldname# = "1">
    </CFLOOP>
    It does not seem to like session.A_CF_VARIABLE . so session.#fieldname# does not work, I get an error
    A CFML variable name cannot end with a "." character.
    The variable session. ends with a "." character. You must supply an additional structure key or delete the "." character.
    Do I have to wrap it a different way?
    Thanks
    Mark

    ahh. great. that fixed the loop problem. My second problem now appears that I am not picking up the correct data.
    My test data has a form post with field names EMAIL and GENDER, and then I was trying to write session.email = VALUE_OF_FORM_FOR_EMAIL .. session.gender = VALUE_OF_FORM_FOR_GENDER, but what I am actually doing is writing the values EMAIL and GENDER into the session. so session.email has the value EMAIL.. and not what I typed into the form.
    I guess it's because the fieldname in the index is also used as the name in the form and it's confusing it, so it goes for the wrong one, not the value from the form.
    the alternative would be to append something to the name of each field in the form.. so email is F_email and F_gender... although i tried this and using <CFSET session[fieldname] = "F_#fieldname"> but that threw an error, maybe just a formatting issue. I'd prefer to try and make it work without appending anything to the form names
    Here's some test code that has the form fields hard coded -->
    <CFSET fieldnames="email,gender">
    <CFSET email = "[email protected]">
    <CFSET gender = "M">
    <CFLOOP list="#fieldnames#" index="fieldname">
    <cfset session[fieldname] = '#fieldname#'>
    </CFLOOP>
    Thanks once again for the help

  • Variable name that is variable?

    Guys,
    I want to create distinct/different menus using my dynamic gui generation program.
    The thing is, I need the menu object to be of a different name each time I want to create a menu.
    code snippet:
    Menu menu;
    menu.add( blahcomponent);
    I want the menu object to be different each time,
    eg,
    menu1.add( blah);
    menu2.add(blah);
    menu3.add(blah);
    How can I make it so that the variable "menu"
    is distinct each time?
    I am thinking of concatenating strings together to create different variable names but this doesn't work as it isn't possible to convert String to a Menu obj?
    eg,
    menu = "menu".concat(id); // where id is a String                     // variable
    menu.add(blah);
    I hope you get my idea. Any help/alternative
    solutions highly appreciated.

    You can use a string as the key to the hashtable, look at the API, the get(key) method accepts an object as the key. also, if you are looking up by index only, a hashtable is not faster than an array, as they accomplish the same look up task (this to earlier post). If your using strings as keys, a hashtable would be better here though.

  • Storing a variable name in a variable

    I need to be able to store a variable name in a second variable and then be able to access the first variable by calling the second one. Something like:
    var1 varchar2(10);
    var2 varchar2(4);
    var2 := 'var1';
    dbms_output.put_line(var2);
    where instead of outputing the string 'var1', var2 would essentially be replaced by the identifier var1.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I don;t know whether this will solve your purpose , just tried something! Hope it gives some idea to you
    declare
    v1 varchar2(10);
    v2 varchar2(10);
    procedure swap(x in out varchar2,y in varchar2)
    as
    begin
    x := y;
    end;
    begin
    v1 := 'Hi';
    v2 := 'Hello';
    swap(v2,v1);
    dbms_output.put_line('value is' ||v2);
    end;

  • How to build a connection string if "Only variable names (i.e.: $variable) may be used as the target of an assignment statement."

    im looping through databases on a server & building  a connection string to each database.
    $SQLConn.ConnectionString = "Server=$SrvName; Database=$DBName; User ID =DBLogin; Password=myPassword;"
    The problem is i get this error:
    Only variable names (i.e.: $variable) may be used as the target of an assignment statement
    I can put the code into an Inlinescript, but then I lose the ability to perform paralellism. Is there any way to construct the connection string in PS Workflow without using an Inlinescript?

    Hi Winston,
    Why not just wrap the InlineScript blocks in a Parallel block, to cause them to execute in parallel?
    For example:
    workflow foo {
    parallel {
    inlinescript {
    start-sleep -Seconds (Get-Random -Minimum 1 -maximum 5)
    "a"
    inlinescript {
    start-sleep -Seconds (Get-Random -Minimum 1 -maximum 5)
    "b"
    Sometimes outputs "a b" and sometimes outputs "b a"

  • Assigning different variable name to objects to be stored in a collection

    sorry this may be a very silly and easy question - but i urgently need help.
    can a collection contain objects declared with the same variable name
    ie. what i'm trying to do is:-
    Abridgment varabridgment = null;
          int nRows = 0;
          while(resultSet.next()){
            nRows++;
    //the doggey code part - but what i'm trying to do is to create a new Abridgment object with a unique name so that it can be stored in the clooection object later as a unique entry based on the nRows counter???
    // is this possible or needed?
          varabridgment = varabridgment +nRows;
          varabridgment = new Abridgment();
          varabridgment.seta_county(county);

  • Is it possible to use a variable in the name of other variables?

    Trying to avoid a long post; is there some command in Java that would allow a variable to be read before the rest of the statement it is in?
    For example, using a pair "@" to encapsulate a variable with the mystery command I'm looking for:
    *public class Example {*
    *public static void main (String[] args) {*
    Char variable = "A";
    int @variable@_Status = 0;
    So that this application would create an integer named "A_Status" and assign it a value of 0. Obviously, I'm not looking to be told that "int A_Status = 0" is the best way to do that, I'd like "variable" to be able to be defined by input or change somehow in the code. I have a gut feeling that this is impossible due to the compiler, but I'd like a more professional opinion. Anyone?

    The variable "name" is a lot less important than you think. In fact, when your code is compiled, the computer doesn't care one jot about the name of the variable.
    You should not worry about trying to do this, but rather should tell us the reason why you would even want this. If we knew that, we could show you a better way, guaranteed.

  • How to Assign a Field value to a Variable??

    Dear All,
    Kindly let me know, if <b>"HOW TO ASSIGN A FIELD VALUE TO A VARIABLE????"</b>
    Situation is, we have a Field (OBJK-TASER) in which 2 tables (SER01 & SER03) are stored. And we want to access names of the Tables which are there in the field(TASER) in  (OBJK) table  to a variable and then passing that variable to the sql query as a table name to get data accessed dynamicaly.

    try this
    select TASER from OBJK into table it_table.
    loop at it_table.
    select field1 field2 from (it_table-table) into table it_fields.
    endloop

  • Assigning a value to a substitute variable

    Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to assign a value to a substitute variable.
    This is what I'm doing:
    - Prompting user for input
    ACCEPT uom CHAR PROMPT 'Enter number of UOM system you would like: ' DEF '0'
    (displayed list of options are numbers 0-5)
    - Based on input, open corresponding file
    (start i:\utc\all\oracle\uom\uom_column_heading_&&uom..sql)
    Problem:
    - Default selection is 0, meaning use the CURRENT UOM system (a number, 1-5)
    - That being said, &&uom must be assigned a 1-5 value in order to open the file that corresponds to the CURRENT UOM system
    Let me know if any additional information is needed.
    Thanks!

    I apologize for the format. I tried to make it more legible, but was not able to. FYI: It appears to be easier to read in "Edit" view.
    Thanks, I tried the &&uom := your_function(); suggestion, but I am getting an error. It looks like the "value" of &&uom is being read in the assignment statement, not the variable name.
    I have copied the piece of the code, for your reference.
    ACCEPT uom CHAR PROMPT 'Enter number of UOM system you would like: ' DEF '0'
    DECLARE
    v_uom_sys_selection NUMBER;
    v_curr_uom_sys VARCHAR2 (50);
    v_uom_num NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    v_uom_sys_selection := to_number(&uom);
    v_curr_uom_sys := EG.GET_CURRENT_UOM();
    v_uom_num := eg.get_user_selected_uomnum(v_curr_uom_sys);
    &&uom := to_char(v_uom_num);
    dbms_output.put_line('v_uom_num = ' || v_uom_num);
    dbms_output.put_line('&&uom = ' || &&uom);
    END;
    --prompt "&&uom"
    start i:\utc\all\oracle\uom\uom_column_heading_&&uom..sql
    Below are the results I get when commenting out the &&uom := to_char(v_uom_num); line. NOTE: the "value" of &&uom = 0.
    v_uom_num = 1
    0 = 0
    If I leave that line in, I get the following error:
    PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "0" when expecting one of the following:
    begin case declare end exit for goto if loop mod null pragma
    raise return select update while with <an identifier>
    <a double-quoted delimited-identifier> <a bind variable> <<
    close current delete fetch lock insert open rollback
    savepoint set sql execute commit forall merge pipe
    The symbol "<an identifier> was inserted before "0" to continue.

  • Dynamic Variable name (for int/long) from a String variable

    Hi,
    I want to give a int/long variable name from a String.
    for ex.
    String str = lookup + "Id";
    lookup is a String variable coming from XML. Now, for instance lookup="name". So str = "nameId".
    Now I want to create a int/long variable by nameId.
    Could anybody tell me the way how to do. Please don't tell to use MAP.
    Edited by: Shah on Dec 5, 2007 3:26 PM

    Well you can't. Use a Map.
    The compiler translates variable names into slot numbers, either within an object or withing the local "stack frame" and these slot numbers are assigned names at compile time. No new slots can be created at run time. Java is not Basic.
    Reflection allows you to find existing field names and methods (not local variables), so it's possible to map, for example, XML attribute names to field names or setters in an object but the names have to be known at compile time.

  • File information -- How to retrieve file name from header variable

    Hi
    I am using File Adapters to read files(.xml) and then I need to perform some database operations.
    One of the requirement is storing the file name read into the DB.
    I searched through the forum and got the information on how to configure this in the header variable. The link below shows the same.
    File Adapter
    Now, I use the XSL mapper to map the source values(from input xml file) to the corresponding table column names. So how should I get the value of the file name.
    I saw some of the in-built functions to be used for this but there is not enough documentation to proceed.
    Can anyone please provide some solution on this.
    /Kiran.

    Hi,
    Here are the steps that you need to do after you have declared the variable.
    1) The variable that you have declared should have the following elements
    a) Filename
    b) Directory
    2) Use the assign activity to copy the value of the filename part of this variable to the arg that needs to be passed to the database. (most probably an invoke variable).
    If you still have any problems implementing this, mail me at [email protected]..and i'll send you the screen shots for the entire process.

  • Added dynamic text; How do I stop variable name from showing?

    I am creating a simple game for kids.  On the first page, I added an "input text" field for their first name.  I called the variable firstname.
    When they move to the next page, I used a "dyanamic text" field so I can call them by name on this page.  It works.  However, When I test the game, on the first page, where the firstname is input, it shows    _level0.firstname          instead of just a blank space for them to input their name.
    I know I fixed this in the past and it was something simple, but I can't remember how to do it.  I'd appreciate anyone's help!
    Thanks.

    Beginning with Flash MX (version 6), you assign the text field an instance name using the Property inspector. Although you can use the variable name method with dynamic text fields for backwards compatibility to Flash 5 and earlier versions, Macromedia doesn't recommend this, because you can't control other text field properties, or apply style sheet settings
