Attached rather than embedded?

In Mail (and Tiger), how can I receive messages with attachments, such as photos, not embedded in the text? Can attachments -- to be clicked on -- be indicated at the top or bottom of the message?
Thanks!

The Mail.app displays all photo/image type attachments with received messages inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default which cannot be turned off. Inline or viewed in place attachments are not embedded.
The same when attaching such files to a Mail.app message. Although image/photo and smaller PDF attachments (1-2 pages) appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default before being sent, depending on the recipient' s email client and available preference settings such attachments may appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message when the message is opened by the recipient or as attached files only which must be opened separately for which the sender has no control over.
You can try a plugin for the Mail.app called Mail Attachments Iconizer which is Shareware ($6.00).

  • How can I sent photos as attachment rather than embedded in the email?

    For work, I need to send photos to my editor via email. In Mail, the jpgs automatically become embedded in the body of the the email, but my editor would prefer to receive them as attachments. Is there any way to send photos as attachments in Mail, rather than embedded email itself?

    LaSylphide, the Mail forum shows up as one of the categories within the "Mac OS and System Software" forum. Click on whichever version of OSX you're using, and you'll see the list of categories.
    There are several threads on this topic, and I've seen three solutions:
    1. Check the "Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" box. Some people say it works, some say it doesn't.
    2. Open Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
    Some people say this works, some say it doesn't.
    3. In Mail > Preferences > Composing, make sure "Message Format" is set to "Plain Text." Once again, some say this works, some say it doesn't.
    Hopefully, one of those will solve your problem. There may also be a setting in your editor's email program that would solve it, but I'm assuming that's a Windows app and I haven't worked with Windows since 1993, so I'm no help there.

  • Can i send images by email as attachments rather than embedded in email

    can i send images by email as attachments rather than embedded in email

    How the email message looks in Mail is fairly irrelevant to how it will look to the recipient.  An image attached to an email message is an attachment regardless of how the client displays it.  Some will display it inline, others as an icon in a list of attached files.  Regardless, it is an attachment and should be capable of being opened, saved to another location, etc.
    Unfortunately, some Windows email clients (*cough* Outlook *cough*) are absolutely crippled when it comes to email standards, and make it difficult for recipients to view or save some attached images.  You can better ensure success with Outlook by using Windows-friendly attachments and only sending plain text email, rather than HTML email.  However, Outlook is still Outlook, and it does not play well with others.
    If you must communicate with people who use Outlook  try uploading your photos to an album on Picasa, Flikr, Shutterfly, etc, and then send people a link instead.  Or convince them to use a real email client, like Thunderbird.

  • PHP forms submitted as an attachment rather than email?

    How do I get my PHP forms submitted as an attachment rather than email?
    Meaning, if I set up a form on my website and someone completes and submits it, how can I get the responses as an attachment rather than in email text?
    Much appreciated.

    Hi Gunter
    I have spent so much time on this now.
    I have tried to convert the php to an attached .txt or .csv file.
    Learnt a lot but still can not seem to get the form data to be submitted as an attached file.
    Here are two of my attempts, please assist:
    <?php
    $email=$_REQUEST['email'];
    $firstName=$_REQUEST['firstName'];
    $lastName=$_REQUEST['lastName'];

    $cr = "\n";
    $data = "Email" . ',' . "First Name" . ',' . "Last Name" . $cr;
    $data .= "$email" . ',' . "$firstName" . ',' . "$lastName" . $cr;
    $fp = fopen('reservationTest.csv','a');
    fwrite($fp,$data);
    fclose($fp);
    // Mail to
    $email = "myemailaddress";
    //subject
    $subject = "Test Budget reservation";
    //Header
    $headers("Content-type: application/octet-stream");
    $headers("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=reservationTest.csv");

  • Linked images rather than Embedded Images

    Is there a way to have an image in a Pages document be linked rather than embedded? The intention would be to maintain photo quality but reduce the size of the document. This would be similiar to indesign.
    Cheers.

    Hello Bryan,
    Pahes has not such a function. All you can do is to place a link by hand into the document package folder. This means to show the document in the Finder, do a control-click onto it's icon and choose the item "Show Package Contents" from the appearing menu. Now you will see a new window with all the content of the document in it. Take the images out and place a link with the exact name plus ending of the image into the folder. But be sure to place a symbolic link (type into Terminal: "ln -s <path>/<imageName>", when you have navigated with: "cd <documentPackgeFolderPath>" into the document package folder) or this will not work.
    If you think this is the kind of way that works for you than use it. But I think this is no way for a production workflow.

  • Emailing photos as attachments rather than embedded in email text

    Hi
    I have set my mail preferences to send emails as plain text rather than RTF.
    Here is what happens
    Route 1) I export a photo from iphoto to my desktop, then open the Mail program, create a new email to my friend who uses Outlook on WIndows, and ATTACH the photo from my desktop. Whilst from my mac end, it looks as though the photo is embedded in the text of the email, when my friend receives it in Outlook, the photo is "attached" just as I wanted it to be, and is not embedded in the text. So route 1 works
    Route 2) I select the photo in iphoto and click the Email icon within iphoto at the bottom right of the screen. The email program opens and the photo appears (as before) to be embedded in the email text rather than attached. This time when I send this to a friend using outlook on Windows, the email arrives with the photo still embedded in the body of the email, and not as an attachment. So this route does not work
    Any ideas why route 2 is overriding the preference settings an sending in RFT (assuming that is what it is doing)? Can I change this?
    Is there a way to make the "Email" icon in Mail work the same way - i.e. to attach the photo as an attached file rather than embed in the text of the email?
    I ask because I send photos for people to save in original size and format so they can print - embedded photos in the text are no good for this
    Thanks

    You should deselect having iPhoto include any caption or file names. Having those following each photo is likely the source of this behavior. When sending to such recipients, you should have all attachments last in the message, and with no text following or between them.
    Also, when the message appears in the Compose window, an extra safeguard is to then click on Format in the menubar, and choose Make Plain Text. I use Aperture, rather than iPhoto, and always do this step, and would also do with iPhoto.

  • Linking rather than embedding movies

    Hi,
    I have been using Keynote for several years and have always embedded my movies within my presentation (i.e., selecting "copy audio and movies into document" during the initial save). Despite embedding the movies, I still keep a local copy of each in the same directory.
    I'd like to, at the very least, link to rather than embed movies in future presentations, but don't know how that will affect portability. I often create my presentation on one machine and present using another. To that end:
    1) Does anyone know how Keynote stores the location of media files that are not embedded? Are they absolute or relative?
    2) Also, is there any way to "undo" embedding in existing Keynote files for which I had selected "copy audio and movies..." the presentations were created?
    Thanks in advance.

    >Someone probably knows better then me, but can't you
    embed the font in the library and then refer to it programatically?
    Yes, you can do this, but this is a bit kludgy in my opinion.
    I'd rather not HAVE to know that there is a font in the library
    that I need to use. I'd rather be able to take the font of a
    textfield that I am already using and then use the font that is
    already embedded in that textfield to create create new textfields.
    Creating a font symbol in the library is just adding extra
    weight to the SWF file. If I have a textfield on the stage that
    already has the font outlines, then adding the same font to the
    library is just extra weight. But again it's not just a weight
    issue - I'd rather not have to know that the font is in the library
    to begin with.
    I'd rather be able to say "Hey, you know that textfield on
    the stage? well, use the same font for a new textfield? What's the
    font that the textfield is using? I don't know and I don't care.
    Just use the same font."

  • I attach a file in mail and the whole thing shows there ie. attach a PDF and the whole pdf content is displayed in the mail.  Anyone know how I just get the icon toi appear as the attachment rather than the whole file?  This only happens with pdf and jpg

    Hi Folks,
    When I attach a jpg or pdf to a mail it shows as the whole document "pasted" into the mail.  Anyone know how I get the file to just show as an icon and not as a mass of pasted in docs?
    Thanks,
    Pedro

    For your own viewing, you can of course control-click on the attachment and select "View as Icon".
    For others' viewing, it depends upon their email reader.  To ensure that attachments are not displayed expicitly you can put them all in a zip file (via control click and "Compress") then attaching them, or you can use third party stuff like Attachment Tamer.

  • Image Attachment instead of embedded image (for sending photos)

    Hi,
    Is there a way to make mail send photos as an attachment rather than as an embedded image in the email? My colleagues are using Lotus Notes at work. Everytime I send them photos, they complain to me that they are having a hard time downloading the pictures 'coz they cannot simply click on it and save.
    thanks,
    zurc

    zurc,
    I sent mail in text-only format and put attachments at the very end of the message. I think photos and images are shown inline when send in a message in formatted-text format.
    Putting the files at the very end of the message prevents the mail being "split up" in several parts (body, photo attachment, and signature as attachment) which is also annoying for Windows users.
    I have to admit that I don't know if this works with Lotus Notes, but you could give it a try.

  • How can I convert an iphoto to a file rather than a picture?

    I have several friends who would rather get my email with a file attached rather than photos?  How can I do this with Iphoto?

    Try this:  in Mail's Composing preference pane set the format of the emails to plain text.  Then once the photos are in the email Control-click on them and select "Show as icon" in the contextual menu.
    That might let them see the photos as icons/attachments rather the view the photos.  A lot depends on how they have their email client setup.
    The sure fire way is to zip/compress the photos and adding the zipped file to the email.
    The recipient will have to unzip the file at the other end to get the image files.

  • Photos sent from iPad and iPhone are now embedded rather than attached.

    Previously when I sent a photo or a screenshot from my iPhone or iPad they appeared in my e-mail as attached, but all of a sudden images are embedded in the e-mail, which makes downloading them to the computer a rather tiresome task. Does anyone know if it is possible to still attach images rather than having them embedded? I suspect it has been introduced with the latest iOS 7 update.

    Have tried this but it is still not pulling in older emails. I also have an iPhone synced. On my apple computer at home, all the emails come through. Why have apple removed the option in settings to determine how many emails you can pull through ?  best wishes, sam

  • Why are my mail attachments embedding in the mail doc. rather than showing up as an attachment

    after upgrading to Lion 10.7.2. It seems my mail document attachments are embedding in the email, rather than showing up as an attachment. How do I resolve this?

    There's been a lot of discussion on this.  Some indicate that setting your email format to plain text will result in the photos being just attachments.  When I've tested it by sending to myself that's not been the case.
    There's a 3rd party plugin for Mail that is supposed to do what you want.  I've not tested it so can't comment one way or another:
    One way to assure the image files travel as attachments is to put them in a folder first and add the folder to the email body. That zips/compresses the folder and sends it that way.

  • Does mail always insert the pdf file into the email rather than attachment

    How can I set mail to always attach pdf files as attachments rather than insert into the mail message?

    But if you receive an email with a PDF attachment - which appears as text embedded in the email rather than an attachment are you really saying that the only way to solve this is to resend the email to yourself so that it will then appear as a PDF attachment?

    Hi,
    You have the choice between xml or pdf, in later versions of designer you can choose with a dropdown on the email button Object palette, the "Submit As";
    In earlier version you had to edit the XML Source and change the format from xml to pdf (or vice-versa);
