Audio Causes Safari to Hang with beachball of death
I get the following error in the console:

This error hits every time I try and run safari and use any kind of sound. For example, if I go to a site where I can play a sound file Safari will lock up, beach ball of death and then I have to force quit. When I look in the console I get the above error. Noticed also that any applications that use sound (games, apps, etc.) will also produce this error and the audio playback sometimes will not work. Interestingly, I can use Firefox without any problems on sites that will lock up Safari when audio is involved.
Any advice? I searched the forums and google but didn't see much! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I tried it and it still locks up and gives the dreaded spinning beach ball. Every time Safari freezes it logs this in the console:

Non-Apple browsers cause cascading system hang with clean install of Lion
It started with Google Chrome. After a few hours of use, Chrome would randomly lock up one renderer at a time until it was completely unresponsive. Console showed nothing conclusive in the logs, and would soon lock up itself. Logged-in Terminal windows could sometimes get as far as a "ps auxc", but would lock up during the command output, and new Terminal windows or tabs would never get past login. The SSH daemon would be dead in the water, preventing me from logging in remotely. Any existing SSH connections would hang on the first command. Activity Monitor would lock up the moment I tried to sample a process or interact with anything. Interacting with SystemUIServer (pulling down the menu for the clock or trying to do a Spotlight search) would cause SystemUIServer to hang. Same with the Dock. My mouse was like the Midas of software failure: everything I touched turned to hang. Eventually I'd be staring at a spinning beachball. After a few (five to ten) minutes, it might perform a couple queued events (opening a window, switching to another application) but would usually become wedged again immediately, forcing me to hard restart.
I then tried installing Firefox 5, and discovered that it causes the hang fairly reliably within the first ten seconds. Since I knew when it was about to happen, I managed to capture a few stack traces in Activity Monitor, but it was always different, and always somewhere in the kernel (usually file-system related: __getattrlist while scanning fonts one time, the open system call another).
Safari, on the other hand, works great.
I've tried performing a verification of my startup disk, which returns no errors, so although I'm not ruling out hardware failure at this point the problem started immediately after I upgraded to Lion, and persisted even after I wiped my hard drive completely and performed a clean install from the recovery partition. It also doesn't seem to be completely the fault of either Chrome or Firefox, since they're different browsers with different rendering engines using different system frameworks. They do both perform a lot of file I/O, so maybe that's a clue. Another possible lead is the seemingly random errors Console will spew out while the hang is occuring. Most recently I've gotten a screenful of '--ImageKit Error: updateGLTextureWithBitmapData: glPixelStorei returned an error : 506 ...', and before that it was 'Google Chrome Helper: CGSLookupServerRootPort: Failed to look up the port for "com.apple.windowserver.active" (1100)', "kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero". Console spew being what it is, though, I don't know if any of that is relevant.
I figure I would be seeing quite a lot of angry forum threads if Chrome and Firefox were completely unusable on other people's machines, so I'm guessing there's something specific to my configuration happening here. With a clean install, though, I'm not sure what it could be. Here are detailed system specs:
24" iMac (Early 2008 -- just out of AppleCare coverage, figures) , 2.8 GHz, 2GB RAM, running Lion build 11A511 (which should be the 10.7 release version).
I would be massively indebted to anyone who has experienced or heard about this issue before and can give me something else to try.Zeroing the disk serves no purpose in this situation. It is a common misconception that this is required to map out bad blocks on the drive, but the fact is that 1) modern hard drives map out bad blocks as part of everyday operation, and 2) zeroing the drive involves simply writing zeros with no checks to see if the zero was written successfully, so it wouldn't know if a block was bad anyway.
It's possible the drive is starting to go bad, although then there should be some problems with SL as well. I would recommend repartitioning the drive with Disk Utility. Make sure it's got one partition, using the GUID partition map scheme, and format that partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Repartitioning should get rid of any gremlins lurking on the disk, unless the physical disk itself is dying. And after repartitioning, install straight from the flash drive, as Shootist recommends, rather than installing SL first.
Hardware could be an issue. It's entirely possible for an older system to work fine on slightly faulty hardware while a newer system does not. Running Apple Hardware Test wouldn't be a bad idea.
Firmware updates wouldn't be a bad idea. However, note that my mid-2010 MBP with the same specs is running Lion just fine, and I've never installed any firmware updates. (Firmware updates scare me... if my machine is running just fine, I'm reluctant to risk installing new firmware. But that's probably just a bit of paranoia talking. ) -
Safari and Firefox spinning beachball of death––HELP I can't use the net
Today, 3/30, a new problem surfaced. Nearly every time I click on any link or go to any website, I get the spinning beachball of death. After 1 to 5 minutes, it stops and the page appears. When I go to the next page or link, it starts again. I have a Mac Pro 2008, Leopard which has been running just fine for months. No recent changes.
It does not occur on the other macs on my home network.
It happens with Safari and Firefox.
It happens with ethernet or wifi connection.
I have repaired permissions, run a full tech tools pro diagnostic, and of course I have rebooted several times. Nothing changes.
This makes my computer totally unusable for internet. Any ideas? (Obviously I am writing this post on another computer.)You are not the only one I have the same issue. Sorry this post is'nt to but to let you know others are having the same issue my Imac works great but my LT is worthless

Editing bookmarks causes Safari to hang
Hello
I have a long-ish list of bookmarks, which I synchronise to iCloud. When adding new ones or editing existing ones, I find at least 50-75 per cent of the time Safari hangs for a minute or so, spinning beachball and all. This makes what should be a brief task quite quite time-consuming and frustrating at times - and this pecularity never happened before I upgraded to Lion. Anyone got an ideas?Any thoughts anyone?

Safari sometimes freezes with beachball on my 2011 macbook pro, Is it a known issue?
Above question, is there any solution? This mostly happens on sites with video on them.

Ichat hangs with beachball on start up
I installed OS X Leopard about 2 years ago and ichat started hanging on start up about 2 weeks ago. Whenever I open the application the chat window opens, sometimes it tries to connect and very rarely it shows me my friend list. Then it beach balls when the cursor is over the friend list or over the menu bar at the top. If I switch to a different program everything looks fine, but I can no longer switch back to ichat. I have to force quit to close. I have tried deleting preference files out of the library to "reset" ichat. Nothing works.

Put your Install Disk in the Drive.
Open the Option Install Folder
Click on the Option Install pkg
When the Installer opens select just Applications (Reveal Triangle) or more specifically just iChat within that.
After iChat has Installed download and Install the 10.5.8 Combo Updater to bring iChat up to the OS level. (link to List at bottom of the Users Tip).
Use Disk Utility (Application/Utilities) to Repair Permissions (First Aid tab)

Safari hang with spinning wheel of death
Safari frequently hangs with the spinning wheel of death. In the lower left corner it reports "completed X of Y items", but as X increases so does Y, so Safari never seems to finish all the "items" on a page.
I have finally figured out how to fix the problem. In the Safari pull down menu, select "preferences", and then un-check "enable java" and un-check "enable javascript".
Without java, Safari is just as fast as Firefox. And if you do for some reason need java, you can use Firefox instead (as I had to, to log into the Apple Discussions" page.Without java, Safari is just as fast as Firefox. Safari is faster than Firefox. There are very few sites that need use Java, so unless you know a site uses it, it should always be disabled. And for clarification, no part of the Apple web site uses Java, so there's no reason to have it activated. -
Flash (latest) causing Safari 4.0.4 to "hang" every time
So in another thread I was told that Safari is "hanging" rather than "crashing" - I know that deep in the technical side of code there's a difference, but on the user end, they look and act the same, hence my extreme confusion and frustration. How long must one let Safari "hang" before it becomes a "crash"? If you literally can't do anything other than Force-Quit, how is that not the same thing? I was also told that given my report (the first one below), I'm running Safari in 64 bit, but according to the "Get Info" screen for Safari, I'm running in 32 bit, and Activity Window does not show the (64 bit) in the Kind tab for Safari - can someone explain that one to me also? I see where it's indicating that, but like I said, I'm not according to all the places I've been told to look. Also, as I noticed in another thread about a different issue, I do NOT have the "Open in Rosetta" box checked either. Before I posted, I forced this issue again so I could have a new report to have for comparison's sake.
Yesterday (and for about 2-3 days now) when I tried to access sites with Flash (for the sake of someone wanting to try and duplicate the issue, we'll make it easy, mindjolt.com, a simple Flash games site) it would lock up, and I was able to kill the Flash module using Activity Window and continue on to other sites until I hit the next piece of Flash, in which case I'd have to use Activity Window again and keep going. The only problem with this "solution" is that I NEED Flash to work for websites for my volunteer job. I've tried ClickToFlash, and it only keeps it from locking up until I try to activate one of the Flash modules and then it locks up and requires me to use Activity Window to shut it down.
Today when I try to recreate the issue I no longer have the Flash plug-in showing in the Activity Window so I can't shut it down and keep going, I have to completely Force Quit Safari and open it back up. I've tried five different times with mindjolt.com (trying to launch game), Facebook (trying to launch flash based app), azcentral.com (news site, was able to navigate through 3 pages), youtube (locked up nearly instantly), nbcolympics.com (navigated to a specific athlete's tweet page on the site)
I've refreshed the cache, reset Safari, uninstalled/reinstalled Flash, reverted to an earlier version of Flash (9.?), completely emptied the Internet Plug-ins folder before reinstalling the newest Flash again, my Input Methods folder was empty to start with, and it's causing the same problem in Firefox. Those are the only two browsers I have, and typically I only use Safari because it runs just about everything I need it to.
Below are three (3) reports: one (1) from yesterday (before the Flash plug-in disappeared from Activity Monitor) and two (2) from today, the first one I ran and the fifth one I ran.

sorry that the explanation asked for by someone else added to your frustration - one point was that your problem is different to theirs, and hence easier dealt with in its own thread.
If activity monitor says it's 32 bit and Safari's option for 32 bit is checked - it must be in 32 bit... I only mentioned that the report posted on the other thread seemed to show otherwise - +Architecture: x86_64+
slightly off-topic... crash reports are nicer, cuz they show more detail of what plugins/input managers etc etc might be loaded & causing trouble. Which is handy, since people often overlook one in the jumble of unfamiliar filenames & folders.
More ot - but you mentioned it... one of the advantages of 64 bit, is that plugins are run as separate processes, hence they show in activity monitor, and when they crash, don't take the browser with them. -
Safari causing full-system hang
For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:

I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:

The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
The second issue still eludes me.
Things I have tried:
Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple! -
10.5.5 hangs with the beachball
I have a macbook (dual core 2) and early intel iMac (dual core) 2006. Both have pretty much same setup and now have 10.5.5. My iMac started exhibiting the "beachball of death" freezes more and more in last few days. It started in iTunes when watching videos and "spread" over a couple days to most applications even finder would "freeze" for 20-30 seconds.
The main difference between the two is that a hard drive die on this iMac (the old 250 WD) I had replaced it with 500 GB just before this started. I had been running the iMac for two days before I put the new 500GB on an external 300GB HD that I had restored my last backups of time machine (from a 1 terabyte time capsule) for two days.
I have followed recommendation on this area of discussions to fix permissions and repair files. No files seemed to be repaired but there was a small collection of permissions out of order. That did not seem at first to fix things. I also rebooted into install DVD and fixed more permissions and two more were found. That seemed to work for a few hours. Also cleared Safari and such caches.
But then things started a bit (but pretty low level so far but they are back to a lower extent and this is not normal). I also read about similar problems and suggestion my new HD might be culprit or that my memory might have some issue (we removed it while we did HD replacement). So I ran Apple Hardware Test in extended mode - pasted with flying colors. I also used the Remeber program to test out the ram with overnight loops. Memory tested fine.
So not sure what is wrong but clearly it is a software issue. I am now suspicious of iTunes 8 a bit because that is where this is appearing again first (like it did before it spread to other apps and finder) While fixing all the file permissions seemed to have calmed it down alot it is back and first appeared in iTunes (so far). Symptoms in iTunes 8 consist of following:
1) On reboot and startup the rest of loading things is paused as iTunes takes a long beachball pause with it first starting and syncing my 32GB attached iPod touch and then my 16GB 3G iphone (the former seems to be one with long pause because it is set to start the iTunes and such). I have since had it not start with touch attached to avoid this annoyance at startup and do a manual sync when I want to do things.
2) When watching a tv show as I get in last 10 minutes I am starting to get again (they had spread throughout in earlier pre permission fix problems) 20-30 second pauses of my playing and then the video skips the 20-30 seconds ahead when it continues.
So iTunes might be the prime culprit in my current thinking although it was weird that this stuff the first time had spread to all apps and finder (now subdued by my permisions fixing it would appear). But it is interesting after just one video of an hour my iTunes is starting with the same symptoms that seemed to start this. So far it has not (over night at leas) spread again to other apps and such. Maybe this is two issues and I fixed the later but I wonder an time will tell.....

It looks like it's something serious. The system is completely unusable atm. Whenever it runs everything seems to work fine, but it can simply hang at any moment regardless of what I'm doing. It usually doesn't stay up for more then 5 minutes.
I've tried a few more things in the mean time. Installing the combo update didn't solve it. I've completely removed everything related to iTunes using the Apple instructions, but it didn't help any.
I've basically ruled out it being usb related as I previously suspected, because i'm running the system now with just my bluetooth mouse, no usb device of any kind attached, including a keyboard, and it still hangs just as frequently.
I also created a new user and tried the system under that account, but the results are the same.
I've noticed a new symptom now, and it's quite worrysome. Whenever the system goes into it's unresponsive state, I hear the harddrive spin down. Then after a while it will sometimes spin up again, but it will only be for a short time and it will sometimes allow an application to very shortly make a bit of progress, but then the HD spins down again. At some point it simply won't spin up anymore, forcing a reboot. Sometimes, this behaviour can keep going for quite a while, with the HD constantly spinning up and down and applications constantly being unresponsive because of it. This however, is not something that seemed to be occuring yesterday, at least not in such an extreme way.
I understand the unresponsive state a bit better now too. Basically, applications function, but whenever you ask it to do anything, it will completely stall because it seems to need to access the HD. This allows some animations to continue, for example the dock, but whenever I try to start an application, it will stall.
I think I'm going to try a archive-and-install and upgrade to 10.5.4, just to see if it helps, but at this point I suspect a more serious problem.

Transferring photos from camera or memory card causes iPhoto to hang up with the spinning beach ball - why? This happens only on a 5 year old iMac running 10.6.8. It is a recent developmemt. All other machines have no problen with the same card.
I click on the send feedback everytime it pops up with the force quit, so they'er getting it.
That sends a crash report. Its doubtful that these are ever seen by a human being, but more likely datamined. Sending feedback reaches an actual person.
My guess from yourdescription is that the portion of the OS (note, OS, not iPhoto) that manages the importing process is what's crashing.

Safari Hanging with OS X upgrade.
I have a imac mid 2007 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of Ram. I recently upgraded this to OS X Lion and have been experiencing Hangs with my Safari that require a hard boot restart. This seems to happen after the machine has been running for a period of time and I find that Safari wont respond and I get the beach ball as i try to access. I perform a force quit and try to restart but this doesn't occur. It also wont allow the system to shutdown without a hard restart. I have also noticed mail stops working too.

Prior to this I would have Safari hang, Mail hang and other apps. This would require me to force quit the apps and then trying to reboot resulted in me having to power down (hard stop) the machine to reboot. Since making this change I have not seen any addtional hangs. Hoping this is something that wiil get corrected in a future update.

Flash Player Causing Hang With Most sites
Hi,
I've been having problems with my flash player plugin and I feel like I've tried everything to fix it. Most sites that require the flash plugin for videos etc. cause firefox to hang. I know that flash is creating the problem because I can browse the web just fine if i disable to plugin. Any help on the subject would be immensly appreciated.Hi Paul, thanks for the information. Safari 5.1 hangs with completed x of y items
Ever since upgrading I have about 30% of my pages freeze with the load bar stalling some number of items completed out of some larger number. I've read the forumns and have done most (if not all) of the suggestions:
- clear cache
- remove plug-ins
- delete files in /Library
I thought it might be something to do with DNS pre-fetching so I changed my DNS to use OpenDNS. Still had the problem. I then read that it might be that my router (Cisco RV082) may have a problem with DNS pre-fetching so I disabled DNS pre-fetching. Still had the problem. It is not always the same wensites and some that work today will not work tomorrow. I see many folks on the discussions have the same symptom.
I am running low on ideas. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix or how to continue to debug?

JimMake sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click your MacintoshHD on your Desktop then click Get Info.
See: Capacity & Available. Make sure there is a minimum of 15% free space.
If drive space isn't an issue, and you're experiencing this problem after the upgrade, could be a third party Safari addon causing a conflict. It may have been compaitible with the prior version of Safari, but not 5.1.

Also, if you are running v10.6.7 as your profile indicates, update your system software to v10.6.8. Click your Apple menu / Software Update...
