AudioIPCDriver.kext ERROR

Hello,
Every time I keep starting up my PowerBook G4 with 10.4.11, I keep getting any error msg with AudioIPCDriver.kext stated below;
"System extension cannot be used.
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AudioIPCDriver.kext"
was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."
I read a couple of threads most of which that refer to this;
1. Open a Terminal (Usualy in Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.app)
2. Go to the extensions folder from the terminal with the following command:
cd /System/Library/Extensions
3. Manually change the extension rights with this command:
sudo chmod -R 755 AudioIPCDriver.kext
However when I type this into Terminal, "sudo chmod -R 755 AudioIPCDriver.kext"
I get this in Terminal;
"WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort."
I type in the password and get this message in Terminal;
"chmod: AudioIPCDriver.kext: No such file or directory"
Can someone send me any suggestions?
Thanks!

several things:
First, your directory path needs to be preceded by a /
i.e.,
cd /System/Library/Extensions
Then you need to realize that root user is not enabled by default, so you need instead to issue
sudo chmod -R 755 filename
or else start a root shell like this:
sudo /bin/bash
or whatever shell you need.
These are fairly elementary things, so I apologize if I am overstepping, but make sure you really understand what you are doing before tampering with anything in /System

  • Fix for Finder saying AudioIPCDriver.kext installed improperly

    AudioIPCDriver.kext is one of three kexts (sorry, I don't remember the names of the other two) installed by either a Quicktime or an iTunes update (and maybe other installers), and these installers don't always correctly set these files' permissions. Some people report these files (sometimes just AudioIPCDriver.kext) sometimes wind up with bad permissions, causing the startup error message, after you back up or recover a drive. When this happens, it's usually because the permissions for a lot of other files get messed up during the backup and/or restore, but only these (and sometimes a few others) will cause the startup error message. Running a utility to repair permissions on the drive will fix most or all of the other files, but not AudioIPCDriver.kext--maybe there's something wrong with the receipts file that's supposed to contain the permissions for this file. In any case, the proper permissions for AudioIPCDriver.kext are:
    Owner: system or root; read/write/execute
    Group: wheel; read/execute (no write)
    Others: read/execute (no write)
    You can use the chown command in Terminal to fix the permissions; some people say this works:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AudioIPCDriver.kext
    …but I don't yet know my chown from a hole in the ground, so in case this doesn't work for you (some people also suggest using chown to just set the octal code for the file to 775, but this doesn't always fix the Group's write setting (it should be off)), so to fix AudioIPCDriver.kext's permissions, I use iRepair or BatChmod instead (though unfortunately, the current version of iRepair (1.0.5) won't work under OS 10.5--it "quits unexpectedly"). Select these utility's option to copy the permissions to items inside the file, since AudioIPCDriver.kext is a container for other items whose permissions need to be set the same.

    Ok, so I don't know my a** from a chown either but maybe this will help

    Also, if it is just changing the settings for that file I think I can help.
    Locate the file by going to the hard drive icon and double clicking.
    Double click on System the Library and the Extensions
    Click on the View menu and choose as list.
    Locate the file in the list and click once on it to select it.
    Now choose File>Get Info
    There is an ownership and permissions area at the bottom.
    Choose Details the unlock the lock and enter your password.
    Change the ownership from System to your user name.'
    Now you can change the permissions to read and write,
    That is what mine is set at and I do not have a problem.
    You need to change the owner back to system now and click on the lock to lock it.
    Now restart the computer.

  • IPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and getting a "appleusbethernethost.kext" error

    I've been reading about how to restore my iPhoto from my external hard drive, but when I plug it in I don't see a "restore" button
    that these forums talk about? (Running 10.6.8)
    iPhoto takes ages to open, then when it does, the pinwheel comes up for a bit, then it quits.
    The appleusbethernethost.kext error comes up occasionally - I've read some about this, but can't
    seem to figure out the seemingly confusing instructions on how to fix the issue.
    If you can help, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

    Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
         sudo chown -R root:wheel /Systems/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
    Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It does not echo to the screen so type carefully. Press RETURN again.

  • Keep getting ".kext" errors during software installation or updates

    This has been going on for a while now, though presently I am finally getting a pattern in terms of incedent times. Previosly, I was getting ".kext" error messages all the time. Then I tried re-installing Snow Leopard and that redueced the number of incedents. Now with Lion, they only happen with Software installation or updates. The messages usually start appearing when the instalation process gets to "moving components into place" or something like that. So, that leads me to think they are related to some some components. Usually the message reads something like "
    /System/Library/Extensions/LogitechQuickCam.kext"  has not been installed properly. Please reinstall it or contact the vendor for assisstance." That is usually the first alert to appear and when I click Okay, another appears in its place but with a different .kext file named. Here are the .kext files named listed in usual order of appearence:
    /System/Library/Extensions/LogitechQuickCam.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWireless3G.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWireless3G.kext/Contents/Plugins/NovatelWirele ss3GData.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NovatelWirelessFilter.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/PTUMWDrv.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/RIMBBUSB.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/SMSIWirelessModem.kextt/Contents/Plugins/SMSIWireless CDC.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/SMSIWirelessModem.kextt/Contents/Plugins/SMSIWireless Serial.kext
    I recognize the first one becuase I did have a Logitech QuickCam once, though it didn't last. The ones that have RIMBB probably refer to the Blackberry I used to have. At one point I did use it as a modem for my Mac. I don't recognize the other ones.
    Is there anything I can do to stop getting these alert messages? Any ideas? Thank you!

    A kext is a kernel extension (usually drivers) that affects the OS kernel at the lowest possible level. This is one of the things Apple wanted to limit as much as possible with the new MacOS architecture since extensions were one of the sources of fragility in OS 9 and lower. It may be as simple as finding the programs that installed these files and using the uninstaller that should exist. (Or not) You might try drilling down into the Extensions folder and removing those files by hand but the problem is there might be other things that were installed when these files were which will continue to cause trouble.

  • One Way to Fix the "System Extension Cannot Be Used, AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" Error...

    I found (one) way to fix this error...well, at least it worked for me (see below):
    There seem to be various threads addressing this issue and no "one" way is the right way for everyone. I'm running my Macbook on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Once I installed the iTunes update, two things happened: my iPhone became corrupted when I sync'd via USB and then my iTunes stopped recognizing the iPhone as a "sync-able" device -- meaning it would show up on iTunes but when you went to click sync, the sync button was unavailable.
    I tried locating the .kext file, deleting it, repairing it, replacing with an older version, entered different commands in terminal but I kept getting the same error. Ultimately, I fixed the problem fairly simply, but it may not be something everyone is willing to do. If you have an external hard-drive and had your computer hooked up to Time Machine, this is what you should do:
    Hopefully you'd been backing your computer up automatically fairly recently, and you have some this stored on an external hard drive via Time Machine from before iTunes 11.4 was downloaded onto your computer.
    If you haven't done so already, and your iTunes library isn't corrupt, Backup your entire iTunes library to an external hard-drive (if you don't care about your library, ignore this step...this procedure might not work, however, if your first backup of your iTunes library is via version 11.4. If you go through all of these steps and you encounter the same problem, restore your itunes to an older version via Time Machine, then redo steps)
    To do this, create a new Folder on your hard drive and call it "iTunes"
    Go into your iTunes preferences > Advanced > under "iTunes Media folder location" we want it to say /Volumes/(Your Hard Drive Name)/iTunesNext to the "iTunes Media folder location" dialogue box, it should read CHANGE or RESET. Click CHANGE, navigate to your external hard drive and locate the newly created iTunes folder...your computer should automatically start to transfer your library to the new destination.
    Backup and "new files" on your computer that you create since updating your iTunes to version 11.4 (i.e. new iCal entries, documents)
    Backup your important files (I have mine in dropbox but chose to be safe and backed them up on an external hard drive as well)
    Once you have everything saved, you're going to want to go through the process of completely restoring your entire computer (essentially wiping it clean).
    To do this on Snow Leopard, you need to have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installing disc.
    Insert disc > when the Install screen pops up, select Utilities... > it will then prompt you to Restart your computer
    After your computer restarts, it will prompt you to reinstall Snow Leopard or select a different option from Utilities which can now be found at the top of your screen on the toolbar. From there, select the option that is along the lines of Restore from Backup Using Time Machine and then select which backup you want to restore your computer to ... since iTunes 11.4 went live on Sept. 10th, I would restore to any date before that.
    When your computer restores itself to your chosen backup, your computer should be exactly as it was on that date, iTunes included. It's as if nothing ever happened.
    To do this on any later OS X, I believe you have to restart your computer and then hold COMMAND+R before the grey screen appears. From here, I believe it will prompt you similarly to the Snow Leopard procedures 1-3 as listed just above this bullet point.
    When your computer prompts you to update iTunes to version 11.4 from whatever version you reverted back to, DO NOT UPDATE. Keep your old iTunes version and wait for this thing to be addressed by Apple.
    This procedure worked for me and although it's a bit tedious, it fixed both my iTunes and iPhone errors. Note: I did have to erase and restore my iPhone through an old backup via iTunes once iTunes was working again. Try it out. See if it works for you. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FULL SYSTEM RESTORE.

    There's more to it than this IMHO.  Here is my explanation:
    If I go back in my Time Machine backups and restore the previous version before I installed iTunes 11.4, the version of that same kext was also listed as being "7.0" despite being older and twice the size (120400 bytes vs. 63024 bytes in the 11.4-installed version).
    (The older version is "BuildVersion 305" and "SourceVersion 122000000000000"; the new 11.4 version is "BuildVersion 417" and "SourceVersion 113000000000000".)
    The real problem is this:
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/_CodeSignature used to contain
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  172 Jan 31  2014 CodeDirectory
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel    92 Jan 31  2014 CodeRequirements
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  1745 Jan 31  2014 CodeResources
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  4064 Jan 31  2014 CodeSignature
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents used to contain symbolic links down into there:
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeDirectory@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeDirectory
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    31 Jun 12  2012 CodeRequirements@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeRequirements
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeSignature@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeSignature
    When iTunes 11.4 was installed via Software Update/App Store, it removed CodeDirectory/CodeRequirements/CodeSignature but it did not remove the corresponding symbolic links.  Presumably that is what triggered the "cannot be used" pop-up message.
    Trashing the kext and installing it from the downloaded 11.4 .dmg does not create the symbolic links, thus avoiding the problem.
    Obviously rolling back to the previous (Jan 2014) kext will fix the problem as well as the symbolic links point to files that exist.
    (I'm really curious to know what happened between BuildVersion 305 and BuildVersion 417 that caused it to shrink nearly by half.  It looks to me like the Code Signing stuff got ripped out - Lord knows why.)

  • Reformatted disk but restore didn't work properly, had to reinstall system and now having major kext errors

    Basically I had to reformat my hard drive, and in order to do that I copied all the files from it to a disk image which I then used to restore through disk utility.
    Now this worked as far as individual files go, but the OS for some reason didn't copy properly. After restoring from the image, the machine started up with an infinite pinwheel and apple logo, not going anywhere, so I eventually just reinstalled snow leopard from the original installer. This is fine as far as the system itself goes, but I'm having some very annoying issues - for one, some things which I had registered have reverted to trial versions (probably just a question of moving some preference files from the backup which got overwritten, shouldn't be too hard) but far more seriously, a bunch of kext extensions aren't loading, including one which is needed to run my external wifi antenna (the internal one is banjaxed, won't connect to any network unless you're sitting beside the router at all times).
    Here's the console log. Why are these kexts not working, when they worked perfectly before the reformat? Still struggling to understand why copying the entire root dir to a disk image and then restoring from that image did not, as expected, yield an identical system, and why I even had to reinstall after doing this. But more urgently, how do I get these extensions working again? Using airport isn't sustainable, I can't sit on the stairs every time I want to use the internet

    As you can guess, Ralink USB Wireless Driver is the one I'm having trouble with, although the other error you see, BoomDevice, is one of the apps which had been registered but has reverted to trial. The errors in console made me think it was a permissions issue, but repairing permissions, despite taking half an hour and modifying tons of files, did not resolve this issue.
    How do I fix this, and also out of interest, why did it happen in the first place? I imagined formatting and restoring would be far, far less complicated than this O_o
    EDIT: Should point out that obviously going from 10.6.8, the reinstall reverted to 10.6, and I haven't been able to upgrade since I can't get this internet kext working. Shouldn't be a problem though since the wireless driver was for 10.6.x...

    Still struggling to understand why copying the entire root dir to a disk image and then restoring from that image did not, as expected, yield an identical system, and why I even had to reinstall after doing this.
    Because there is a lot more going on under the hood than merely copying files.
    The only way to do what you want is to use cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner.
    My  advice is to rescue your personal files to a regular non-TimeMachine  external drive, Zero erase the ENTIRE drive and install OS X fresh and  update, then your programs from original sources and files from backup.
    Then, make a bootable clone and you can copy that as many times as you want and each one is bootable.

    Where does this file come from - the error message keeps appearing - the Apple Store has been no help

    Unless you are connecting your mac to an ancient drive or device that does not have a USB jack, you will never need this... Just delete it, it does no harm to do so. This system extension is not even needed on any Intel based mac because support for the cable, example linked to below, is provided by OSX. You can safely go to System/Library/Extensions and remove GeneIOUSBIDE.kext. If you are leery of doing that, Just keep a copy of it somewhere so you can reinstall it if you think it caused a problem.
    Here is what the cable looks like that this Extension is supporting, so you can see for yourself if you will ever really need to have this Extension installed.

  • SM56KUSBAudioFamily.kext error message

    I am using a Mac Book Pro 15" installed with OS Lion 10.7.3.  I have got the error message "SM56KUSBAudioFamily.kext" displayed many times.  I wonder why this happened.  I never install or connect any USB modem or USB audio device to my Mac Book Pro.  How do I solve this problem?

    Back up all data.
    Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the Recovery desktop appears, reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

    The system extension "/System/Library/Caches?com.apple.romextensions/INIC1632Root.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact teh product's vendor for an update.<<</div>
    Thanks
    Thomas

    I recommended to you on twitter that you try deleting all contents of that cache directory... That's generally considered to be safe, it really should just be cached data. But what would a .kext be doing in there? And if it was in there, how would the OS find it, given that they belong in System/Library/Extensions?
    The question-mark in the filename shown in the error message makes me wonder if in fact that file is in the cache directory at all. Maybe you could have a quick look and verify that it's not there? Then maybe use Sherlock and see if the file INIC1632Root.kext exists anywhere.
    If you find the .kext you could sanity check it: does it have reasonable permissions, is it in the right directory? You could try giving it a different extension (to disable it.) For reference:
    http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/02/what-is-kextwhere-is-kext-how-to-install-kext /
    If you don't find that file anywhere, then that would be very interesting.
    I googled to see if there was anything suggestive about the name as far as possible hardware or vendors (tried 1632, C1632, etc.) Nothing leapt out.
    Hope this helps...

    Does anyone know what this error is? I keep getting it when installing updates lately, yet I don't seem to be having any other problems. The error reads:

    The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/CNQL1212_ClassicNotSeize.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
