Aur is a friggin mess, I propose either a serious cleanup or a whipe.

[oh@Alice][~/projects/clean-aur/aur-mirror]% echo * | wc -w
55989
[oh@Alice][~/projects/clean-aur/aur-mirror]% grep -lR --include PKGBUILD '_.*root' | wc -l
6759
[oh@Alice][~/projects/clean-aur/aur-mirror]% grep -RL --include PKGBUILD 'package()' | wc -l
19339
The numbers pretty much speaks for them self. There are thousands of packages using old PKGBUILD syntax in aur. 34.54% of all aur packages will stop working at pacman 4.2 release. If you also count packages that are plain broken, duplications, outdated and so on, I would not be supriced if the total number is close to 50%,
In my not so humble evil overlord of everything™<insert evil laughter and dramatic music here> opinion something drastic should be done. I propose that we set a time limit, if there have not been a major improvement in the overall quality of aur by that date, the current aur is moved as a backup and aur.archlinux.org is started again with a clean db. Active maintainers of packages can then easily reupload their packages (or perhaps a button on the backup page to move the package over).

sanskritfritz wrote:I'm afraid a wipe would really too drastic, as some valuable information would get lost, especially the comments on packages that worked once, and are just waiting for someone interested to step up and do some work.
I've lost count of the number of times I've read a comment on the AUR to the effect of "You need to change <setting x> to <value y>, or the package won't build," only to see the maintainer hasn't acted upon that change after a reasonable grace period.  The package isn't marked as orphaned, and may not be flagged out-of-date, but it's effectively both. In my opinion, while an immediate wipe of everything may be a little too drastic, summarily doing away with anything that's been orphaned more than 6 months, resetting all AUR votes to zero, taking stock of things in [community] and making it clear that things will be done away with several months from now (and everything will need to be uploaded again) is reasonable. I'm not going to pretend to have any details in my head about how to proceed, but the sheer number of abandoned packages is staggering; start by just getting rid of them.
Also, in my totally non-authoritative opinion, there are certain packages in the AUR that the TUs might consider placing on some sort of probationary status, or even getting rid of, because they just don't seem (to me) to need the Arch Build System for any good reason, and so don't seem (to me) to belong in the AUR. I'm talking about toolkit and window manager themes, window manager plugins (think XMonad contrib) and variants (think DWM Sprinkles), Vim plugins and colorschemes, minor EMACS modes, Ruby gems, Python pip/easy_install packages, fonts---PKGBUILDs that are essentially overblown download-and-move-this-file scripts or calls to other operations (e.g. "gem install") rather than source build scripts, or which don't need to be installed to the root filesystem on single-user systems(and most of us probably have single-user systesms).

  • Yaourt fails to install *any* AUR package

Hello, I'm new to Arch, but since my problem is pretty much specific to yaourt/AUR I thought this would be the better place to ask around.
I tried to install a whole bunch of packages from the AUR repository, but almost all that I tried failed to install, mainly dependency errors far into or after the compiling process, one example - the game Go-Ollie wouldn't install because the Image Magick library wasn't found. However, Image Magick is installed, but there's no trace of it's library not in the AUR, nor the community repository. Same with A7XPG - failed to install because something was missing that I can't find anywhere. I am starting to get VERY frustrated. It looks like there are a ton of broken packages floating around in the AUR and there are a ton of programs missing that I'm used to having on the other distors (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc..) What am I missing here? Am I doing something wrong or is AUR/Yaourt really as messed up as it seems? A little help?
PS: Please be easy on me, I'm still a grass green noob after all

bloodyhell wrote:Got an off-topic question though - It came to my attention that the Arch install distro had a relatively easy albeit non-graphical installer. Why did the developers ditch this? I think I'll never understand the appeal of things being more complicated and/or inconvenient than they have to be.
The AIF was not ditched for any but the most simple reason: It was buggy as hell and the maintainer did not have the time to keep it going. It tried to do everything, to cover every scenario, but was ultimately a victim to its own complexity. The new installer is not more complicated, it is actually more simple. All you have to do is follow the readme step by step and make your own decisions in the process. I find pacstrap and arch-chroot to be more universal than the old AIF. Before the switch, creating an install script was a painful process of understanding the AIF and learning its syntax. Now we have these straight forward tools, so building your own install script is very easy. It also gives you a more in-depth knowledge of what's going on on your system.
The new installer also seems to be more friendly towards wifi users. Then you will never ever again have to deal with the situation, that the AIF somehow kicks you out of the process and then complains about an ongoing installation, without telling you where the lockfile is or how to fix this manually. In a menu, I always press down and enter to get to the next item. The AIF did half of this, it moved the cursor down to the next item automatically. In more than one occasion, I killed the installer with this and sometimes even had to redo the entire process (incl. downloading the packages), because bringing the installer back to a specific state was a painful act. I find the current solution more user friendly.
If you feel like Arch could need a menu driven installer, you are invited to create one, but all attempts to do this so far either drowned as quick as they had emerged or were rejected by the other users, because they were either too specific, too buggy or generally failed to add anything to the process, that the current install scripts have to offer.

  • I just recieved a new Iphone 4 ysterday, and am trying to install some apps but every time I try it says it failed to sync is it a messed up phone or a itunes problem?

Either the new Itunes is a horrible update or apple sent me a messed up phone, either way I have 2 problems with my new phone and the new Itunes. First I cannot install apps, after almost 30 times trying with restarts unplugs and major frustration building. Second when I first enter Itunes the bar at the pottom shows that I have ample storage room left on mu Iphone but when I click on the apps tab it says I have 2.3mb free what is going on?

As this is not my first Iphone nor my first Itunes device that really doesnt help me. I'm well aware of how to sync, and do pretty much anything Itunes allows, and with the knowledge I have aquired form the years of using Itunes am not very happy with the new Itunes. My problem still persists unable to sync, and storage still showing less room than actual. Thanks for the try though. I'm going to attempt to uninstall again and hopefully it works.

  • Auto-stack by capture time messed up my stacks

After manually creating many dozens, perhaps a hundred stacks, I tried the Auto-stack by Capture Time feature.  Now my stacks are totally messed up; I either have way too many or none.  Is there any way to get back to where I was except by reverting to an earlier saved version of the catalog?

However I find the capture time of photos in any one stack exceed 1 minute!!  For instance, these are the capture times of photos in a single stack:
         8:19:12PM, 8:19:25PM, 8:19:43PM, 8:20:24PM, 8:21:19PM, 8:21:45PM
This is a maximum interval setting.  It has nothing to do with the total timespan of the whole sequence. Just, how closely-spaced the individual shots  were. These were less than half a minute apart.
IOW: how long can pass between one shot and the following one, before that is no longer considered to be part of the same continuing sequence.

At sales order I need to propose either of two packing instructions for a material. When I create SO, system always takes Packing instruction2 automatically and ignores packing instruction 1. How can i propose either of two packing instructions?
    2) I have M1 & M2 together have 750 pcs each, how
I need t o pack together. How this can be proposed automatically by the system?. For certain materials I can be packed together and certain materials cannot. Can we define in system this reqmt, pls?

  • Database Ownership gets messed up with SQL Server 2014 AlwaysON

    Hi All,
I am trying to build a nightly refresh process for SQL Server DB from on premise to Azure Cloud (IAAS). The Azure infrastructure is configured as 2 node always on. Every Day a new DB get created with retention period of 7 days. (Another script which deletes
    old DB)
    Nightly Build Process as Below:
    1) DB Backup get copied to Azure Blob Storage
    2) Restore DB on primary Server on Azure
    3) Change DB owner to appropriate login on primary Server
    4) Backup DB/Log from primary Server and restore it on Secondary Server.
    5) Add DB to alwayson temp Group.
    6) Failover temp Group and change DB owner to appropriate login. (Application Dependency to have login ID as the owner of the DB).
    7) Failback and remove DB from temp group and add it to appropriate group.
During this process somehow the DB ownership gets messed up randomly either on primary or Secondary.
I can handle the primary server ownership mess-up by adding piece of code to set the ownership in the end, but for secondary I can't change the ownership as the DB is in readonly mode, resulting, when failover happens the application fails to open default DB.
Any lead on the solution would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Viral Shah
    Thanks - Viral

Are you using contained databases? If not, is the login on your primary server on Azure the same as the login from your on-premise SQL Server instance as per this
KB article? Keep in mind that SQL Server looks at SID values and not login/password combination. If the login exists on both servers and the database backup is restored, it carries with it
the login SID assigned as the DB owner

  • Mail: Forwarding: Original Sender Gets Email as Well?

I haven't been using Mail very long -- I used to use Eudora for decades and it was my definitely favorite email app. I hated Outlook et. al and when I bought my MacBook Pro and it was running 10.5.8, well, I just could not get Eudora to work. So I reluctantly had to switch to Mail, which I hated then, and hate even more now.
A couple of times, I was horrified to see that when I forwarded email from someone to my wife, and perhaps added a comment with the quoted text of the email, the original sender whose email i was forwarding got the email -- with my comment -- as well!
Since I don't know what's going on, I don't know how to explain it, but here's an example. Someone emailed me about taking some lessons (I teach Japanese). I replied and said I couldn't take her right now, which wasn't true -- she was already asking for a group discount for two people and I know the type and I just didn't want to bother with it, so I said I was too busy.
Then, I forwarded the email she had sent me, with the request for the discount, to my wife. I specifically chose the "Forward" button, my wife's address appeared in the address box, and I included some snide comment about why the woman was asking for a discount on a discount, as I'm already way cheaper than most turors.
    Still with me?
Then, later on I changed my mind and replied to the woman and told her I could fit her in, but she'd have to pay the full price. I BCCd my wife in on this email (Bcc means "Blind CC" -- meaning, as I understand it, that the main person recieving the email only sees their address in the header, and possibly "and other recipients," but not anyone else's email address or anything like that.
So, we go back and forth over various things, and occasionally I forward the woman's email to my wife, again, with comments, that I OBVIOUSLY don't want this woman to see.
Okay, no problems there -- before I click "Send" I make sure my wife's address, and ONLY her address, is in the address field, as I'm just forwarding an email.
Yet today, when I went to check what time this person is coming, I see all the emails that we've ever exchanged including the very first one, all one after another -- her emails, my replies etc. But then, in the middle of all these, I suddenly see the email I forwarded to my wife with the snide comment in it! How the **** did it get in there, and is it possible that email was also sent to this woman as well, so she read my comment?
Other odd things have happened when I've forwarded things to my wife -- a reply, perhaps, from someone we both know but with my previous emails, NOT MEANT to be read by my wife, somehow in the chain!
Now I'm ultra paranoid. Has this woman received those emails I sent to my wife (I thought) and read my snide comments? Why on erth would Mail include, in this bck and forth with this woman -- maybe ten emails in all, suddenly a forwarded email to my wife? It should not be in the chain at all, since it was NOT sent to the woman, merely forwarded to my wife.
Is Mail sending emails to people with their email addresses being visible in the address fields without my knowledge? Has this woman read my snide comments (and my wife's replies to them!) and even if not, why are those back-and-forths with my wife doing in the same chain as the emails to this woman? They technically should have no connection to the woman, since they were nit addressed to her, merely forwarded.
And are people seeing who I'm Blind CCing? Mail certainly is an effed-up app -- it's very badly putr together and just serves to remind me that Apple has really put some horrific software into their systems over the years, and seemingly with every new iteratioon and every new OS, the apps just get worse and less intuitive, not the opposite, with NO WAY to downgrade. If I had my way, this MacBook would be running Tiger. with iMovie from 2004 (same for all the iLife apps -- they've degenerated into Microsoft-like unusable messes).
But I'm seriously worried about this Mail issue -- the last thing I want is for people to be receiving emails that I'm not aware are being sent.
And I REALLY wish Eudora functioned on this machine -- I don't know why it doesn't but it keeps giving me error messages. But that's a separate problem.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?

    Thanks, guys . . .
I kind of knew that Mail couldn't possibly be sending emails to people without my being aware of it but I just wanted to double check.
As far as the other email programs go, for some insane reason all the ones I try (Thunderbird, for one) have problems connecting with my SMTP (outgoing) server. In one case, there's no way to change my account setting from IMAP to POP . . . the way these programs are set up, just configuring your settings requires a B.S. in network technology . . . every time these things happen, I end up on the phone with the local ISP for two hours and most of them have no idea what a Mac is  . . .
I think in this case I wll just stick wth the Devil I Know. Every email program has its drawbacks and Mail is clunky and unintuitive but thank God, it integrates with SpamSieve, the only junk mail killer that really, really works (I just learned how WELL it works when I tried Thunderbird and it downloaded all the mail I'm REALLY getting s opposed to the mail that I end up seeing -- for every legit email that SpamSieve lets through, there are at least 75 that it doesn't. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm inundated with at LEAST 400 junk emails A DAY for my two accounts and without SpamSieve I'd be in the First Circle of ****, but I digress).
It's been a year now with Mail and although I despise it at least now I think I'm getting used to it, and your reassurances about people getting unwanted mail definitely removed my last doubts.
I'll stick with Mail, since the others don't look exactly like champs either, and just pray Apple doesn't "Upsdate" anything for a good long while.
    Cheers, mates

  • Dreamweaver CS4 - Record Insertion Form js error

    Hi
I'm dreamweaver cs4 and started using the Record Insertion form, I was mainly experimenting with it and just seeing what it could do.
However when I get to the wizard i have to wait a few seconds for it to connect to the database and then I get an error message that says:
While executing onLoad in ServerObject-InsRecPHP.htm, the following Javascript error(s) occured:
At line 283 of the file "Macintosh HD:Application:Adobe Dreamweaver
    CS4:Configuration:Commands:ServerObject-FormCmnPHP.js":
    invalid array length
I was just wondering if this was a common problem, or I've messed something up either in Dreamweaver, or in the SQL database that I'm using.
I've also noticed that its the same for Update and Delete Records Wizards aswell.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Aaron Kennedy

I see it's your first post. Welcome to the forum.
A good place to start looking for answers is the Dreamweaver FAQ. You'll find the answer to your question under "Crashes, installation, JavaScript, and unexplained problems".

  • THANK YOU!

I've been a lurker in this forum for awhile, and so appreciate all the great help that is available here. I was especially needy in that, although I'm an experienced FCP user, I was attempting a large HD project for the first time. I have now completed this project and wanted to offer some help as a "thank you" for what I have received from this forum.
I have just completed the HD project (108060i) on Final Cut Studio 2 using a dual core G5 (not the fastest anymore). It involved hundreds of clips, lots of rendering, and a "print to tape" final that was over an hour long. So I wanted to share what I discovered to make it smooth (which it was).
    1. There are three settings that must be absolutely correct, or the program simply won't let you work. They are (as you already may know), EASY SETUP, AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS, and SEQUENCE SETTINGS. There are some quirks…
    a. Easy setup will automatically change the Audio Video Settings, but NOT the Sequence Settings. So you must manually set up the sequence settings for your HD project. It you don't do this correctly, the program will continually try to re-render your timeline every time you open and close. Look at all the Tabs!
    b. HINT: Use the new Apple ProRes 422 as the codec for HD (sequence settings tab "render control")
    c. On my G5, FCP doesn't keep these settings unique. In other words, when you open a Standard Definition project, FCP still has the HD settings! (Yikes). So you have to reset everything for SD, then set it back for HD when you return. This is DANGEROUS and might cause a whole re-render of your HD product when you return and have to re-set all the parameters. So try to stay with the HD until it's finished (not always easy… but just a hint). Perhaps this is only on my machine?
I have made screenshots of every setup screen for SD and HD just in case my brain can't remember all the settings that work.
    2. SAVE after every single render! Just get used to it with a quick keystroke. If an when you have an issue (and you may), you can simply go back to the save bin and get the last version. I did this many times and it works well. For whatever reason, I was minding my own business and suddenly a render screen popped up and said "4 days to render"! (honest). The timeline turned red, and I was in trouble. I simply went to the bin and got my last save and it all reverted back to five minutes ago (yeah!). Who knows what happened?
    3. Although this version of FC allows for SD and HD on the same timeline, be aware of an issue: Start the timeline with a real HD clip. If you don't, for whatever reason, FCP will "look" at it and often decide attributes for the whole clip. So make certain your first video clip is full HD.
    4. When you go to "print to tape" (for HD, it's practical since we can't make DVD's just yet), be aware of a whole new deal… a new render screen "CONFORMING TO HDV VIDEO." This gets it ready for tape, and it's an entire timeline rendering. My 72 minute program took 4 hours on my G5. Then it returns to a screen that asks you to push the record button. I did four versions of my program, each one requiring this render time to print to tape. In each case I did it before I went to bed, and awoke with it ready to record. No problems.
HINT: If you have an HD deck (I have a Sony HVR-M15), sometimes it requires a bit of trial and error for FCP to actually "see" it (changing AV and Deck settings to match each other). So I use a 30 second TEST SEQUENCE and do the "print to tape" to make certain it actually is going to work before I do a 4 hour render and find out it won't.
All in all it went very smooth with the expected learning curve, and I made my deadline. It's a nice system when you listen to it, don't go too fast, and allow for a few hitches (save often!).
Thanks to all of you for your fine hints!
    LC
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thanks for your post allasone.
Glad you were helped along the way. I still learn new tricks and tips reading these threads as well.
Couple of minor points/corrections in response to your long and worthy post:
    1. There are three settings that must be absolutely correct, or the program simply won't let you work. They are (as you already may know), EASY SETUP, AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS, and SEQUENCE SETTINGS. There are some quirks…
    a. Easy setup will automatically change the Audio Video Settings, but NOT the Sequence Settings
actually Easy Setup does all of the above.
when you choose an Easy Setup, you are choosing a precofigured set of Audio / Video Settings, which includes amongst others your Sequence Settings.
there should be no special need for you to mess about with either Audio / Video Settings or Sequence Settings if you choose your Easy Setup correctly.
when you create a new project, FCP automatically creates a sequence for you using the Sequence Preset as set in your Audio / Video Settings. if you create a new project, and then choose an Easy Setup for your project that is not the same as the previous setup, then the Sequence Settings of your automatically created sequence will need to be changed.
of course, Easy Setup does not retroactively change the settings of an existing sequence!
the very easiest thing to do, rather than messing with those settings though is, after changing your Easy Setuo, simply delete the original automatically created sequence, and then press Cmd-N to create a New Sequence. The new sequence will carry the settings of your newly chosen Easy Setup.
however (as you mentioned in point 3) FCS2 also has a new feature configured in the User Preferences, to allow the Sequence to be auto-conformed to the settings of the first clip dropped into it ... and yes, very good advice, if you intend to use this facility when working with mixed formats, you need to make sure that first clip is in the native format that you wish the timeline to conform to.
    c. On my G5, FCP doesn't keep these settings unique
FCP can have many projects open simultaneously (HD & SD, NTSC & PAL .. whatever) hence settings cannot be based on project. FCP's settings are system wide.
You should set them as you need them, when you need them ... as mentioned above it is easiest to use the Easy Setup feature to do this.
    2. SAVE after every single render!
a little extreme! I would suggest as "general" advice to all, make sure you configure your autosave settings instead to the least amount of time you can afford to lose. however, it may well be that in your workflow, the save after every render was the best solution.
    4. When you go to "print to tape" (for HD, it's practical since we can't make DVD's just yet), be aware of a whole new deal… a new render screen "CONFORMING TO HDV VIDEO."
its not an HD thing per se. this is specific to HDV and other MPEG HD formats and has been with us since FCP 5. darn good advice though to those working on long format HDV projects
    cheers

  • Audigy platinum pinouts for dri

I have an original Audigy platinum with the connections for a dri've bay - which I did not purchase. My new case allows for a front panel microphone and headphone (as well as other connections) in addition to the back panel ones. After installing the audigy card in it - these connections no longer work =(
Since the dri've bay comes with mircorphoone and headphone outputs - I assume there are appropriate pins on the dri've bay connection that (if identified) - could be connected to my computers froont panel enabeling the use of these with the audigy card and not just the sound system proved with the mobo. Does someone have accurate information about the pinouts for the dri'vebay that are on the Audigy card? And, would you be gracious enough to supply me with this information.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Greetings again and thank you Jeremy for the fast response - FYI I did look for this information on the web before coming here to post. Based on what I gathered from the article you attached was that: . I could connect my front panel headset connections to pins 0, and 2 ( General purpose output , general purpose output 2 and ground) (or should they go to the ones labeled spdif?) 2. I could connect the microphone connections to pins 5 and 6 (spdif input signal and ground) I hate to be a pain but I really don't feel like messing up anything either and maybe a moment of your time can save me a lot of issues later. • Airport express vs. time capsule vs. router

    What is best to do?
My airport express is now connected to my router (speedtouch) and works very well.
Do I connect my newly bought time capsule to my router or keep this one wireless? Because with the airport express I can make use of airplay, which I have not connected yet, but would like to do.
I bought time capsule for wireless backup of several devices. This cannot be used a the moment, because I have to make a backup of my MacBookPro first before I update the software so that I can use the wireles backup application with my other devices.
I do not know how to start.
What is the effect on apple tv, none?
How do I get the most benefit from both airport express as well as time capsule.

We always recommend the initial backup by ethernet.. due to the time it takes and the lower reliability of wireless.
You can either do this with the TC disconnected from the network.. and just plugged straight into the computer.. or swap the Express for the TC. I presume you are running the speedtouch in router mode so bridge the TC.. and plug the computer by ethernet directly into a LAN port of the TC.
The above can be a permanent setup.. just tick the wireless can be extended in the TC.. and run the express in wireless bridge.. or you can also wire the express to the TC if you do not need the extra range.
Remember the TC is faster using gigabit and designed for main router role (even if you pass that to the express). The express still only uses 10/100 ethernet.. and is designed to supplement the wireless setup.
But there is nothing wrong with leaving the express as it is now only allow extend and then setup the TC to extend wireless from the express as that will also work well if the required connections are nearby and you can use ethernet to the TC.
I do not know how to start.
Have a go.. it is not like you are going to mess up. and cause something serious.
IMO.. have a try .. do not think there is one ideal. Switch and swap.. the best is what works well for you.
What is the effect on apple tv, none?
It has no affect on the ATV.
How do I get the most benefit from both airport express as well as time capsule.
    Use ethernet whereever possible.
Avoid double hop wireless.. ie any use of extend by wireless and then another wireless hop introduces severe speed lags. Wireless cannot handle Tx and Rx at the same time.. it is half-duplex by nature. Also it is shared bandwidth.. Ethernet is superior in both areas.. every device has full bandwidth and full duplex.

  • How do I get my video playlists back on iPod Touch 4G after (epic fail) iOS6 update

As other users have identified, playlists present on iTunes on laptop but not on iPod touch 4G after iOS6 update except when select edit. Can I get them back? Not wasting time messing around. Either this is easily sortable or I get a new player from another maunfacturer - seems Apple can't be bothered to sort these issues so not sure I can be bothered with Apple anymore.

i had a problem simular after doing an update on itunes, I re-set=up the itunes according to my os and its working fine

  • Gradient tool doesn't work with gradients on strokes?!

Okay, so one of the new flagship features of Illustrator CS6 is gradients on strokes, but you can't use the Gradient Tool with them? I just get a crosshairs pointer with a "no" sign next to it. What's up with that?? I can see why this wouldn't work with shapeburst mode, but linear and even angular gradients (to set the center point) should be no problem.
In addition to this, here is another bug I discovered:
In earlier versions of Illustrator, you were allowed to use the Gradient Tool to adjust the direction of a shape's gradient even when the shape's stroke was in the foreground. Now that Illustrator can apply gradients to strokes, it is understandable that, if a shape has a transparent stroke, Illustrator will prevent you from using the Gradient Tool on the shape if the stroke is in the foreground.
But the opposite should also be true: if you have a shape with a gradient stroke and a transparent fill, Illustrator should prevent you from using the Gradient Tool if the fill is in the foreground. But it doesn't. Illustrator will happily respond to the new gradient direction, but the gradient of the stroke will not change, and the fill stays transparent.

Adobe tends to introduce half a feature, then abandon it and never develop it further.
Or charge for the fix in CS7!
Couldn't have said it better myself. I get so sick of half-baked "glorious new features" in this program that--as you two state--either never get fleshed out, or require hundreds of dollars spent to get something that feels finished years later--and then start the whole cycle all over again on something else.
I haven't even been able to order CS6 yet, because Adobe's "upgrade" policy is as convoluted as Illustrator itself. First mistake was buying into the Master Collection collection when it was first offered (something I've increasingly regretted since).
Like doubtless thousands of others, I did not upgrade to the much-ado-about-nothing half-baked CS5.5 middle version, because it offered next to nothing (and absolutely nothing in regards to Illustrator). So Master Collection CS5 owners are penalized for this a niggling $25 over and above what the same "upgrade" costs those who bought the CS5.5 non-version--but have to jump through the ridiculous, unnecessary hoop of first "upgrading" to the already defunct CS5.5, and then wait for permission from Adobe to "upgrade" from that to CS6.--AND you have to do all this before a couple-week's deadline.
So I'm sitting here with an utterly useless CS5.5 DVD, which I am dreading to install. I have absolutely no use at all for this version. But I have to install it (and you know how that can go) anyway, because Adobe says you can't install the CS6 upgrade version without having CS5.5 installed. This is an utterly stupid practice that NEEDS TO STOP. It is no small burden to run Adobe's bloated installers on a large bundle package like this. Having to do it twice for my $600 "upgrade" to CS6--just to get AI to run as a 64-bit application--just adds insult to injury.
All this stupid tedium just because Adobe couldn't bring itself to allow the regular upgrade purchase to apply to a mere one full-version back!
And, of course, the also-stupid disparity between Acrobat and the CS bundles continues. To stay current with with Acrobat, you have to "upgrade" to new versions which are released midway between the CS versions. So much for the "all inclusiveness" of the so-called Master Collection.
Each release has two or three half-baked "new" features which, in practice, simply do not justify the inflated upgrade pricing. Rather than being excited about new functionality, I grit my teeth each time this happens.
Meanwhile, Corel's no-nonsense upgrade to its CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 (also 64-bit) is $200, and is available to users of two full versions back--without a penalty for having skipped a version they didn't find worthwhile, and without a must-do-it-now time limit.
And of course Illustrator's text handling remains attrocious. It still can't do ordinary brain-dead simple live shape primitives. It's snaps are pathetic. It has no dimension tools, connector lines, callouts. In other words, the decades-old long list of missing ordinary basic functionality remains. And we pay hundreds of dollars for yet another re-do of its never-get-it-right window dressing.
What a mess! Adobe needs some serious competition.
