Auto Sharpening Defaults Manual Sharpening Setting

I always thought that Auto Sharpen had a fancy built in algorythm to analyize the photo and apply the appropriate type & amount of sharpening. Here's what the HELP function has to say about it:
The Auto Sharpen command increases clarity or focus without the risk of oversharpening an image.
Sounds good. HOWEVER, If I sharpen a photo using Enhance>Adjust Sharpness and then set the degree of sharpening that I desire, it somehow changes the settings of the auto sharpen tool. The auto sharpen tool defaults to using the same setting used by the manual sharpening. I found this to be true in both Version 6 & 7. Here's how I discovered it.
I had a photo with a lot of motion blur. I used the manual sharpening tool (Enhance>Adjust Sharpness) and played with it a bit. There was too much motion to fix it to my satisfaction, so just for funzies, I set it to maximal values and hit OK. After closing the photo, I opened a new one, did some basic exposure & color adjustments and then used Auto Sharpen. To my suprise, it used the same maximal motion blur settings that I previously set for the last photo, which way oversharpened my photo.
So this leves me wondering, what does Auto Sharpen do anyway? Does it just remember the last manual sharpening setting and apply it without any analysis of the photo?
Any words of wisdom out there?

  • Magnetic lasso and auto sharpen not working correctly

anyone having this problem with PSE 3.0

Which operating system are you using?
What is not working with the Magnetic Lasso Tool and Auto Sharpen?
Have you tried resetting the photoshop elements 3 preferences?
    To reset the preferences:
Press and hold the Shift+Alt+Ctrl (windows) or Shift+Option+Command (mac) keys just after starting the launch of the pse 3 editor.
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the photoshop elements settings file
Press Yes to reset the preferences.

  • Higher printer sharpen setting

What I always found is that, even after a good custom capture sharpening under LR, with High sharpen setting I get too soft results.
Maybe it's just a matter of taste, maybe it's that I don't see well (or too well?).
Most probably it's that I almost always print on baryta paper (which is softer than ultra-super-hyper-premium-glossy) or on glossy papers but for very small formats.
Anyway... the Sharpen setting should be a bunch of parameters for the algorithm Jeff Schewe and others worked onto, could you just create another option for more visibile effect?
Once Scott Kelby said (speaking about this matter): "Low means nothing, Medium means Low and High mean Medium".
    I certainly agree.

Actually I have to qualify my statement. Andrew and I are talking about different things. I was mostly talking about how the sharpening interacts with the upscaling. If you keep the physical size of the print constant, it appears that the halo is of constant physical size (i.e. a certain fraction of a mm) of the paper. There is however a strong effect of softening of the image if you upscale. Here is the effect illustrated (you might have to click to see 1:1. These went through a printer profile (for fine art paper on our HP Z5200) sent to pdf instead of to the printer, opened in PS CS5 (extracting the exact image as it is sent to the printer from it) and were converted to sRGB for display here.
Native resolution (about 240 ppi for the 12x18 size I selected) high glossy sharpening
360 ppi high glossy sharpeneing: (I know the HP needs 300 instead of 360 but I used 360 here since that was used in the discussion)
    720 ppi high glossy
So the size of the halo appears physically the same regardless of the resolution setting, but it appears that the upscaled images lose some directness/contrast. The black of the branches is toned down even though if you look carefully you do see more detail in the upscaled versions. So the question is how this interacts with the printer driver and the printing process. One really has to check the final prints. My approach has been to ask casual observers which they prefer and it tends to be not what I expected. They often like the non-upscaled ones as I think the loss of small scale contrast because the blurring inherent to the upscaling counteracts the sharpening and results in something more detailed but less "punchy". This is quite subjective though. I have noticed that non-photographers tend to favor the suggestion of detail instead of the actual presence of detail.
Secondly, if you keep the resolution constant but vary the print size, it is pretty clear that the physical size of the sharpening haloes is determined by the size of the print and not by the resolution setting in that case. For example, if you print a file at 240 ppi at 12x18 and compare to the same image printed at 240 ppi, 24x36, the halo in the second is twice as large physically, so it is an optical calculation that takes into account viewing distance being larger when you print bigger. This of course makes perfect sense. Lastly, If you do not check the resolution checkbox, the image that is sent to the printer for a 12x18 print is bit-for-bit identical to the image sent for a 24x36 print consistent with the previous observation.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to get the iPhone to remember the "manually manage" setting?

The first time I plugged in my iPhone, I set it to "manually manage" under options. I am attempting to sync my iPhone to the same computer each time, but each time I plug in my iPhone, it forgets the "manually manage" setting. If I go to click the manually manage setting again, it wants to "erase and sync". I have done the "erase and sync" on the phone twice now and don't want to do it again - it is laborious to set up the library and playlists and podcasts over and over again. When I plug it in, despite having set the manually manage last time I sync'd, it won't let me drag anything into the iPhone (the iPhone music and podcast libraries are greyed out, and the manually manage checkbox under options is not checked).
How can I make iTunes remember the "manually manage" setting so I don't have to resync the entire library each and every time?

    Hi Elisabeth,
A couple of things you could try that might help out.
First try resetting the iphone by holding down the power button on top of the iphone and the home button at the same time until you see just an apple logo. Then try connecting to itunes and setting the manually manage.
If that does not work something might have become corrupted on the iphone and you can try a restore. This will completely erase the iphone and set it back to factory defaults. If you choose the restore option, after the restore you will see an option the restore from back up. Don't restore from back up, instead choose set up as new iphone. This way if any thing was corrupted previously to restoring the iphone you won't run the risk of putting it back on the iphone. Then you will se a page asking if you want to sync all music, video,... Make sure to uncheck this box since you are trying to set the iphone to manually manage.
Here are a couple of articles from the apple support website that might help out.

  • Content Organizer bug - PDF files does not get routed correctly if autodeclaration is on and library level default values are set

It looks like whenever one specifies Column default values at a library level then the content organizer routing goes a bit awry SPECIFICALLY FOR NON OFFICE FILES [e.g. PDF] . Below are the observations and issues
    1. Column level default value set on a record library with auto declaration of records turned on.  The content organizer routes the document to the library but also keeps a copy of the document in the drop off library. It does not remove it from the drop
off library. The instant we clear the default value settings at the library level of the target library the content organizer works as expected again.
    2. If default value settings are specified on a column in the target library then the PDF file gets routed to the document library but all the metadata is blanked out. The copy of the file that remains in the drop off library has all the correct metadata but
the target library has blanked out metadata.
Are the 2 observations described above by design or are they bugs? If so is there any documentation that is available that proves this because this does not make logical sense and proving this to a client in the absence of any documentation is a challenge.
The problem goes away if we shift the default value to the site columns directly at the site collection level. It's just the library level defaults that the pdf files do not seem to agree with

    Hi Lisa,
Thanks for responding. This can be replicated in any environment but is only replicable for a specific combination of content organizer settings . The combination of settings I am referring to can be seen in the screenshot below. If you turn off redirect
users to the drop off library for direct uploads to libraries and if you turn on sharepoint versioning then you should be able to replicate the issue. Also we are using managed metadata site columns. I simplified this use case to a custom content content type
with just 2 custom managed metadata columns and can still replicate the issue in several environments. Also note the issue does not occur if the default values are set at the site or site collection level. It only occurs if you set the column value default
at a library level.  I was able to replicate this on a completely vanilla Enterprise records site collection freshly created just to test this.  Also note that the issue is not that the file does not reach the destination library. The issue is the
document does not get removed from the drop off library after it is transfered to the destination library which technically should have gotten removed.

  • Auto-Reboot Defaults

Sorry for the multiple posts... I am trying to find the Auto-Reboot default options. I would like to change the defaults to a set parameter. I am looking at adding a signature to the pop-up message and extending the sleep time from 2 hours to 10 hours. I thought it was attached to the baseline setting but that didn't change anything.
    Can this be changed?

    Hi
I've been looking for this myself but can't seem to find what you are
looking for - which is kind of a problem since it would make it a lot
easier to deploy patches if you did not need to go in and set these

  • How to change default media player setting in Mountain Lion

I right click on the desired media player, then I click on "get info" and another pop up appears,
but there is no "open with" selection!  See pic below:
I open the application folder in the Finder window, I highlight the desired media player, I go to the top and
click on File and in the drop down menu, the "open with" is grayed out.  Why?
How do I change the default media player setting or better yet, where do I find what is the default player?  Help Please!

    CheeMiss8
you need to find the file you are trying to have open with a specific application.
for example, I'm going to use an MP4 file titled cat_adventure video.
    here it is in finder
I right click (secondary click) it in finder, and then hold down the option key on my keyboard.
the Open With dialogue should change to "Always Open With" and then you choose your application from the pull out menu when you hover that.
You can make it so all MP4 or whichever file you are using (AVI, MKV, etc) to open with a specific app by right clicking the file choosing get info
The difference here is I'm not selecting the application but a file with the extension of the video format I always want to be opened with a specific application
once in the get info menu I can then select to have the video always open with a certain app.
1.click the open with accordion menu arrow if it is pointing to the left. it should be pointing down.
2.select the application you want to always be associated with that file format
3.select Change All to have that file format always be opened with that Application.
Where this isn't working for you is because you are doing this to the Application itself. you don't do it like that. You need to find the type of file you are trying to open with itunes and then go through these steps.
selecting the application (itunes) instead of the file (mp4, avi, mkv, flv) will not allow you to set what the file format lets you use to play your video.
having said that, itunes is very limited in what it can and can't play. Mainly .mov and mp4's (apples proprietary extensions)

    Inspector > Text > More > Language
Only applies to selected text, like making it a particular font.
It is not a setting that sticks. If you continue to paste in text from elsewhere particularly the Internet it will have a different or None language set to it. You need to select it and make it B.E.

Users are flooding in here and don't know any of this. Of course we have to repeat everything endlessly.
Because I like to give precise, understandable and workable answers to repeated questions, and Apple doesn't allow sticky posts here, I created a separate forum which users can consult to look up real answers, and contribute for themselves if they have something valuable to add:

    * Where have they acknowledged anything?
** They have barely anything listed, compared to the massive list of deleted features, and nothing but an extraordinarily long time frame considering they created the problems here and now. Apple has not said they will do anything at all about fixing the real issues, the biggest of which is that the new iWork apps break virtually all the work of existing users.

  • Default Japanese font setting in Linux

    Hi,
I'm using flashplayer in Debian/Ubuntu, and default Japanese font setting in flash is kind of crap...
It seems that Kochi font should be installed.  Kochi (東風) font is very old and it is not used so much
as 10 years ago Now Linux users use VLGothic or IPAGothic as Japanese font by default.
    My question is,
      - How users can change default font setting?
      - Where/who is the contact address for this issiue?
#I'm also maintainer for most of Japanese font packages in Debian/Ubuntu. In my opinion, Kochi
should be dropped in near future (see package description)

Could someone please tell me what the default screen brightness setting on a Retina Macbook Pro 15" is? Is it 50% when charging and one point less when on battery?
    Thanks in advance!

That isn't really a default setting. It is arbitrary, one system might be different than another at first turn on.
Simple way to tell is wipe your hard drive and reinstall OS X. Whatever the screen brightness is at the completion of the OS X install is the default. Make a record of it.

  • Default Collection Option Set

I currently use multiple collectors that I have created to scan different locations based upon IP Ranges. I have created them so that the collection is spread out over a one week period to minimize network activity.
I have been directed to change my collection so that it happens every Sunday. All machines in the company are now "woken up" every Sunday to receive any necessary patches. I will be changing my collection schedule so that my inventories take place on Sunday also but I have a question about the Default Collection Option Set.
Would it be better to make use of the Default Collection Option Set or should I create a separate Collection Set for this task? Also since I have only targeted specific IP Ranges in the past what should my settings be to ensure that I am looking at the entire network?
I also do not remember - when they wake up the systems on the network will the machines inventory from the Login Page or do they actually need to be logged onto the network to complete the inventory.

I always create my own option sets and give them meaningful titles to make it a little easier to track what is going on. There is really no need (or advantage) to using the Default Option Set.

If you really want that one option set to collect from all clients then just the default settings in a new option set will work as long as you select a valid schedule on the first tab when creating the option set.
Make sure that any new option set you create that you wish to use is actually associated to collection servers. Look at the properties of the collection servers and if they are set to inherit standard option sets then add the new option set in the Collection Server, Domain properties, if they are not set to inherit then add the new option set to each collection server.

  • PO,PR DOCUMENT에 DEFAULT TAX CODE SETTING 방법

    제품 : MFG_PO
PO,PR DOCUMENT에 DEFAULT TAX CODE SETTING 방법
    ===========================================
    PURPOSE
PO,PR document의 Tax Code를 Defaul 값으로 setup 할 수 있다.
    Explanation
    STEP 1.
    ======
    a) Ship-To Location
    b) Item
    c) Supplier Site
: Supplier Site window의 Invoice tax region에 입력되어진 Invoice Tax
    Code가 default 값이 된다.
    d) Supplier
: Supplier window의 Invoice tax region에 입력되어진 Invoice Tax Code가
    default 값이 된다.
    e) Financial Options
: Setup의 Financials Options window에 입력되어진 Tax Code가 Default
    값이 된다.
    STEP 2.
    =======
    추가 정보
    ======================
이것은 Profile Option Tax: User allowed override set to = "YES" 로 setting 되어 있을때만 가능하다.
    Example

    Hi,
