Automatic application update search

80-90% of the time when I am using the Desktop Manager software, I use it to make an internet connection.  When I connect my phone to the pc, the software searches for application updates with a window that pops up. Since I do not have an internet connection yet, this is quite pointless.  There is a cancel button, but even when pressed it still will take upwords of 30sec-1min before the window goes away, and I can make my internet connection.  Is there some way to make the software not search for updates?  I am using version 5.0.1 on both winXP pro, and win7 pro.

I recognize the exact sequence you are describing...did you even attempt what the KB suggests? I am not sure if it does exactly what you are wanting, so trying will at least provide a yes or no...
(off topic...) As for attaching images, when you click the little green tree, it pops up a screen. From what you described, I think you clicked the chain link button...which is to paste a URL link into the body of the message...not an image. To the immediate right is a little green tree...click that to upload images into your post.

• Stopping automatic device application updates

I am running BlackBerry desktop manager version 4.7 and whenever I go to synchronise I get an automated routine of checking for device application updates, which takes 10 seconds or so. Its irritating in that it shows me device application updates that I either already have or don't want and I have to go through the routine every time. Is there a way of stopping it doing this automatically and only checking for updates when I want to? Thanks, Jon.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Go into the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs, then select BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.7, and click the [Change/Remove] button.
On the next screen, Modify should already be selected - select it if it isn't, and click [Next].
On the next screen click the Down Arrow to the right of BlackBerry Automatic Update and select This Feature Will Not Be Available from the drop down list.  A red X should now appear to the left of the option. Click [Next].
The appropriate Integration Option should already be selected. Depending on your choice, there may be one or two screens that follow. Just click [Next] until you get to the window titled Installation Options.
Uncheck the box to the left of Check for software updates and click [Install].
This should stop Desktop Manager from connecting to the Internet to get the latest Vendor.xml which also prevents you from being able to install another carrier's OS onto your device.
One note.  I haven't looked at this lately, but in the past attempting to modify an installation of Desktop Manager can often fail.  This is because if you installed by simply running the EXE you download from the BlackBerry site, it actually extracts to your Temp directory, and installs from there.  The MSI file needed to allow changes in the installation is supposed to be copied to another location - typically in a directory under Windows or Program Files, but older versions did not do this, so when you went to make a change in the installation, if the file was deleted from your Temp directory, it would stop and ask for the MSI file and not be able to proceed until you point to it.
However, the EXE you download is really just a self extracting Zip file, and can be easily extracted with WinZip or any other typical un-archiving utility.  Whenever I install Desktop Manager, I first extract the EXE to a permanent location, and then run BlackBerrySetup.exe.  This means the MSI will always be available when I need to modify the installation (which I do surprisingly often since I also support BlackBerries at work).  Typically this isn't a problem with regular users which is probably why the problem was never fixed (at least as late as version 4.5 anyway).

• Automatic update search

Since updating my virus/firewall program (Trend PC-cillin
14), Flex shows Automatic Update Search (6%) in lower right corner
and in Progress Window shows - Contacting Eclipse .org update site.
This never changes.
My firewall is obviously preventing access to the internet,
but I've tried adding FlexBuilder.exe to the list of programs
granted outgoing access and this has made no difference. Does
anyone know what program is actually trying to do the update or
what I have to do to give this program access?
Usually Trend puts up a message saying such-and-such is
trying to access the internet and I can grant or deny access, but
this doesn't happen with Flex.
Any ideas about what to do would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug

• HT1338 os x 10.5.4, update search, updates to 10.5.8, downloads, restarts, freezes during configuration. i'm not a techie, please answer a fix for this layperson.

after a software update search an update is found, it is downloaded, restarts computer, but during the configuration it freezed at about 15% done. how can i update? i'm a non-techie.

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• N9 Application Updates?

Hi
I got my N9 two weeks ago and I appear to not be being notified of application updates in the UI automatically and am wondering if there is some setting I have missed.
Basically I go into Manage Application and Updates and there is nothing there, I hit refresh and there is still nothing there...  I have went to this screen quite a few times since purchasing the device and the only update I have gotten was for the connectivity SDK that gets installed with the developer mode.  I have never gotten an application or system update through this screen...
However if I go into the store and view "My Stuff" and then go to all downloads sure enough there are applications which have the word UPDATE next to them. If I click the application I get a button to update which after clicking the update then shows up in the manage applications update screen...
What gives - I have seen screen shots which show "n application updates" on the lockscreen... Is there a setting which controls this automatic update?  Is it because I am using it in a non-approved country (USA) and if so why is this a problem?
I just updated to the P1.1 update late last week using Nokia Software Update and my device is now on firmware version 20.2011.40-4_PR_005 and I am using this in the USA.  Everything else seems to be working great on the device, any help here would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jeremy.

You'll get notification when there's a phone sw update available but there's no notification for the apps that have been installed via Nokia Store. You'll need to check the updates for these apps via Nokia Store client, e.g in the following way:

• Scheduling specific time of day for automatic software updates

How can one schedule a specific time of day (i.e. between 11:01 pm to 5.59 am when I have unlimited download availability) for an iMac to search for automatic software updates? System preferences only offer frequency, but no time option. If it is possible to schedule a specific time, will invoking the feature override the sleep function, wake up the machine and perform the software update and then let the machine go back to "sleep?" Thank you for all your help.

to clarify barney's suggestion, the following terminal command will download all available updates and put them in your Downloads folder.
softwareupdate -d --all
so what you need to do is this.
1. turn off automatic software update in software update system preferences.
2. make a cron or a launch daemon to run the above terminal command periodically at the time of your choosing. to make a launch daemon I recommend using lingon http://tuppis.com/lingon/
The daemon will only run if the computer is not asleep at the scheduled time so you might want to set to to wake/start shortly before that. this is done in system preferences->energy saver->schedule.
to install the updates once they are downloaded double-click on the pkg files and follow the instructions.

• Automatic date update in Pages for iPad

I want the date (date feild?) in a Pages for iPad letter template to update automatically (using the system date, like other word process application) but cannot see how to do this. This automatic date update appears to work in the Pages for iPad templates examples. i.e open a letter template and the date field shows the correct date, do the same with the same template 24 hours later and the date is shown correctly accordingly. I believe feature is achieved in the Mac version of Pages by setting up a date field. I would like to do the same with Pages iPad. Any ideas how this can be achieved?

We cannot speculate about future Apple products. We know no more about this than you do at this time.
You can suggest it to Apple at Apple Feedback.

• How to Automate the Query Search Upon Return to the Calling Form?

Greetings Ya’ll Gurus,
Could you please share with me how to make the Query Search executed automatically each time, when database table is updated, upon return to the “Calling Form” (i.e. FormA in this posting) from the “Called Form” (i.e. FormB from here on)?
I have FormA call_form to FormB. FormB may return to FormA. FormA allows users to enter the Query parameters and perform query Search to the database table with a list of search results afterward; whereas FormB allows users to add or delete the same database table records. Both form images are as follows:
FormA:
FormA call_form to FormB by clicking PB “Daily Work Report” (see circled PB "Daily Work Report" in the above image.)
FormB Image (FormB allows users to add and delete database records):
FormB EXIT_FORM and returns to FormA (see circled PB "DWR Selection" in above image).
Currently, our users must press the PB “Search” on FormA each time to refresh the Query “Search” results after returning to FormA, and they request to have the "Search" done automatically/programmatically upon return to FormA each time when the database table is updated.
If you have programming code on this and are willing to share or if you have any suggestion or thoughts on this, it would be most greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot & Happy Holidays!

Thanks so much Andreas, and yes, your link for calling a form and passing a context is very helpful. I believe, your suggested use of the global variable for the saved database table will work for the automation of the Query Search. I am, however, not sure how to make the code and the trigger to automatically perform Query PB "Search". The code for our current "WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED" Trigger for the PB-Search of FormA is as following:
DECLARE
         alert_button     NUMBER;
         alert_id               ALERT;

IF :BLK_DISPLAY.DWR_SEQ_NO IS NOT NULL THEN

         END IF;
end if;
END;My questions are:
After initializing, set and/or reset the global variable for the saved database table,
do I copy the above code (i.e. the "entire" code in the "WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED" Trigger for the PB-Search) to the WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE-trigger, or other trigger(s), of FormA to automate the Query Search whenever there is a successful database commit/save? Or
is there a simple way to activate the code in the "WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED" Trigger for the PB-Search of FormA? Or
is there a simple way to activate the EXECUTE_QUERY(ALL_RECORDS) command in the WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE-trigger or other trigger(s) of FormA ?
Thanks and always.

• Pro Applications Update 2010-02 installed, but not installed.

I downloaded and installed the latest software update and it said it was successfully installed, but when I look at the applications, they are not updated (e.g. Compressor is version 3.5.2 when it should be 3.5.3). I have opened the applications just to check for the new features, but they are not there.
Is there something I'm not doing? Would reinstalling the apps do anything?

I was having the same problem on two of my older systems. It seemed like every week (automatically) or anytime I manually ran software update, it would recommend "Pro Applications Update 2008-05 1.0 3.1 MB". This seem to be a looping problem and it continued even after applying the update. I replaced one of my computers and being a new computer I was not having any problems. Later I upgraded my hard drive and chose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Case Sensitive" as the format for my new drive. About a week later the problem started happening on my new computer with a new drive. I also noticed some applications that I migrated over were acting strange. So I re-formatted my drive "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the problem has seemed to have gone away. I think some applications and utilities including "software update" (in some instances) may not like a case sensitive file system. Also note that Apple ships their computers Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I wonder how many companies including Apple beta test both "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Case Sensitive" and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Any application that writes to a intermediate file on the filesystem or relies on reading and writing to files on the file system could potentially be affected if it were developed on a non case sensitive systems and later deployed on a system that was case sensitive.

• Application Update Framework in Mobile Based App

Alright, I have a tabbed application that I target mobile tablets with (iPad, and Android). However, I also export it as a desktop app. Now, the problem I am running into, is integrating the application update framework to execute when the app loads on the desktop only version (obviously the app store is handling the updates on the tablets).
On creation complete, I am calling the updateCheck:
//Update Framework Related
                        import air.update.ApplicationUpdater;
                        import air.update.ApplicationUpdaterUI;

However, when I execute the app, I get this error:
Error #2044: Unhandled error:. text=Unhandled exception TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
And the app debugger highlights the following in updateConfig:

Any ideas guys?

A little digging and I found this issue: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3650590
Apparently not just Mavericks. This was an issue with the current released of AIR 3.9. I confirmed that downloading the beta of 3.9 released on 10/29/2013 seems to have fixed the issue.

• How to turn off the Automatic link update in InDesign CS5.5?

We have a problem with the Automatic link update in InDesign CS5.5 vers. 7.6
We want to see which images have been updated / modified (ie, marked with the yellow triangle in the links panel).
We want to be able to update the links manually.
Q1: Although we deselect the "Check Links Before Opening Document" and "Find Missing Links Before Opening Document"
under Preferences > File Handling the links get automatically updated even though we choose "Do not Update Links"
when we open the document.
Is it a bug, or is there another option to deselect the automatic update of links?
Q2: When we open old documents made in CS4, we get this error message (see the attached jpeg).
We believe it is because the links are missing in the CS4 document.
Just as many missing links in the document, as many times the error message is presented.
It's a loop that we can't pass.
Could these two problems be related?

This is not normal behavior. I wonder what is different for you.
If you deselect "Check Links Before Opening Document," you should not be prompted to "Do not Update Links." This suggest you have corrupt preferences. So try:
Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990

• Nokia 5800 - application updater missing

Hi,
Some time ago I updated my firmware to v20.0.012.  I can see most of the updates that come with it like the search and dictionary apps, but the application updater is nowhere to be found. I have reinstalled the firmware from the PC suite twice but that has made no difference. I haven't been able to find details of this problem anywhere.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

I have the same problem too, anyone know how to fix this?
thanks
Tom

• Application Update for imac

I have a cerca 2008 iMac with a dashboard that has an "Applications Update" that used to search my computer for flaws. It still begins the search, but the response is now "V Tracker couldn't parse version!" or "V.Tracker App not found!". It has not worked in awhile. What gives?

I am not familiar with that widget. However, I would guess that it has not been updated to run on the latest version of OS X.

• Some Systems Restarted Automatically after Updates Deployment with Restart Suppressed

I've searched the forum and multiple blogs - but, I'm still confused about what is causing some of our workstations to restart after applying a software updates deployment.
I deployed the Dec 2013 Patch Tuesday updates to a collection of workstations. The deployment was set to:
Not allow restarts outside of a maintenance window (box is unchecked)
Suppress restarts on workstations (box is checked).
There is no maintenance window defined for any of our workstations
On all the workstations, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\...\WindowsUpdate\  values are:
WUServer: http address of our SCCM SUP server
WUStatusServer: http address of our SCCM SUP server
Also, the key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...\WindowsUPDATE\AU is:
UseWUServer: 1  (which I understand disables the use of the automatic Windows update service)
Some set of workstations automatically restarted shortly after 3:00 am the next morning. Clearly that's the Windows Update Agent jumping in a restarting the systems. However, I don't understand why it would do that. I really don't understand why it would
have occurred on only some of the workstations while others are still waiting for users to manually restart 36 hours later.
All of the workstations are in the same active directory OU - so the same set of GPOs applies to all.
Note: none of the registry keys were set directly in any GPOs - I assume the values were set by the SCCM client.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Larry
