Automatic re-mount of networked volumes after reboot

Hello.
Does anyone know if its at all possible to automatically re-connect network volumes after a reboot? Or if there's an app out there to do just that?
I really don't want to have every network volume (I have LOTS) in the dock...

Yes this works, but I have been unable to find out how to do this without opening the root of the volumes after the reboot. I tried "Hide Item" in the Login Items control panel, but to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas?

  • Stop automatic mounting of network volume

I have a MacBook that is on a Windows network and connects to a 2003 server. Any time the MacBook is on it tries to auto mount a network volume on the Windows server about every minute or so using an account of an old user. This results in locking the user out of the network about every 5 minutes. I am looking for a way to shut this off.
I have looked in the startup items and can’t find anything. I have also checked in the Login items under the user accounts with no success. Any ideas would be very helpful.

To stop the automatic mounting of a network volume, try looking at Finder, Preferences, Shared, and uncheck the Connected Servers. I don't know if this solves your real problem of (deleted user) drive mapping, but at least it stops trying to mount the volume.

  • Can't eject network volume after extensive browsing

    Hi!
I have a problem that seem to be related to Mac OS X itself.
After browsing an AFP network volume for an extended time theres a quite big chance that the volume won't eject properly.
What happens is that the volume icon vanishes from the desktop but it stays in the side bar of a Finder window.
Even if one waits for hours it still won't go away and upon clicking on the volume in the sidebar a dialog comes up saying it can't be found.
I've tried doing "sudo -f umount /Volumes/volumename" but it doesn't do anything.
If one tries to do a restart the system gets stuck because it can't properly unmount the volume.
If one force a relaunch of the Finder via the "Force Quit..." menu option in the Apple menu, what happens is that the AFP Client process stalls. It shows up red in Activity Monitor.
I can reproduce this behavior on several different computers and on G5's browsing the volume sometimes leads to a Kernel Panic involving "vnode_put".
All machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.8.
The AFP volume I'm browsing when this happens consists of several folders that contains several .eps images. The file-structure looks like in this screen shot: http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/filestructure.png
    Anyone else recognize this?
    G4 Quicksilver 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The volumes are mounted via the Finder.
Ok, I'll try remove all the "dot" files I can find, but I can guarantee you it has got nothing to do with the volume not unmounting properly. :P
No, but seriously, I have made a clean install of the system on both machines and upgraded it to 10.4.8. I then duplicate 4 different .eps files that I copy from a third machine and I duplicate them and make a file structure somewhat like in the screen shot I link to above.
I then start file sharing on the machine with all the files and use the other to browse this machine. I browse from within the open/save dial of TextEdit.
I must say I wonder how any hidden files would cause a problem in this case.
I also wouldn't say that there are many issues with Tiger. It is this thing with network browsing and perhaps some kind of video driver issue that I've posted about here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3302238#3302238
Otherwise I think it runs great!
    Can't understand why you're still at 10.3.9.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

  • Auto mounting different network volumes

I have a MacBook Pro. I use it at the office and at home. When I am in the office, I have one set of network volumes that I mount. At home, I have another (e.g. Airdisk, iMac HD, etc.)
I would like to figure out a way to have the right drives mounted based on where I am. Obviously, I can add aliases to my desktop and do it manually. Or, I can add them al to my user login options. But when I do that, I get error messages because my office drives aren't there at home and vice versa. Setting up different users doesn't seem to be the solution because I don't want to segregate my data, apps, etc.
    Any ideas?

then you can do something along the following lines.
Paste the following into Script Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities).
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    delay 10
    set current_ip to do shell script "ifconfig |grep inet |tail -1 | awk '{print $2}'"
    if current_ip = "work.ip.address" then
    mount volume "afp://[email protected]/worksharename"
    else
    mount volume "afp://[email protected]/homesharename"
    end if</pre>
Edit the script as needed. if your shares are smb and not afp change afp to smb in the above. save the script as an application and add it to the login items.

  • Loss of network connectivity after reboot

I'm new to Macs, so please excuse any ignorance. I'm trying to finally get my G5 on my wireless network. I have an airport card installed and I can successfully connect to my wireless after I enter the network name and WEP key.
However, if I reboot the computer, it seems to forget all this information. If I want to get back online, I have to enter the network and WEP info again, as if it was a new network every time. Needless to say, this is very annoying.
If anyone has any ideas what I may be doing wrong, I would be very appreciative. I had always heard Macs were insanely user friendly, so I'm shocked at how much trouble I'm having. I have to think that I'm just doing something wrong. Please help!

In network preferences, add your network's name to your list of 'preferred networks', and set it to automatically connect to servers in your preferred list.

  • MacBook Pro won't mount *2nd* DVD until after reboot.

    MacBookPro5,1, Intel Core 2 Duo,  2.53 GHz, 4G ram, Mac OS 10.6.8
This MacBook Pro will not mount more than 1 DVD without a reboot in between discs!
These are commercial movie DVD's in excellent condition.
I can mount and watch one commercial DVD with no problems, but when I eject that disc after viewing and insert another commercial disc, it will not mount. I can hear the drive spin up, then spin down, then spin up again, etc... eventually the Finder takes over and says that I've inserted a blank disc and do I want to ininialize?
Eject command does not work while this spin up/spin down loop is occurring. If I Shut Down before the Finder finally recognizes there's a disc in trouble, then reboot and hold the trackpad button, the disc will eject. If I then trash all DVD preferences, the disc will mount and eject on command.
Inserting another disc will result in failure to mount! Etc...
    Any ideas?

I should have updated this ages ago. Sorry.
The solution to the problem was to remove the DVD drive, take the cover off it and clean the lens in the reader mechanism. Just Google up the disassembly directions for your particular Mac model.
Downhillracer1's solution, compressed air blown in through the disc slot is certainly easier and might do the trick if all you've got is a spec of dust on the lens, but if it's a problem with some kind of film deposited, opening it up and cleaning the lens is more thorough.
My DVD drive now reads and burns with no problem.

  • N97 no network signal after reboot (useless)

This is the second N97 I've got. First one I have returned since I thought there was a failure on the machine.
On the second one I've got the same issue. I need an EXPERT help.
    1. Previously I've got an N95 8Gb. I did my back up using OVI.
    2. I connected my new N97, after I've configured the phone (e-mail account with pop3 and smtp settings; personal preferences; network connections; SIP settings, etc). Then I passed the content of my N95 to the N97.
    3. I also transfer some pictures and songs, but doing a copy and paste (The N97 it is listed twice on my PC as two storage devices, both named N97; when I click on anyone there is shown  - on both - the phone memory and the memory card)
    4. I've installed some applications using OVI, except Fring, that I downloaded searching the application through the Nokia website.
    5. Everything runs pefect and smooth, including Fring application (I use only Skype, SIP and LAST FM through Fring). All the settings are the same I am currently having on my N95 (I still having it and using it).
    6. Once I turned off my phone and restart, my screen it is "empty", with no content. On the bottom menu where it is by default "Options - the keypad icon - Contacts" only it is shown "Options - the keypad icon". The "Contacts" option has dissapeared and the "keypad icon" it is useless (I cannot operate it).
    7. Also on the upper left section of the phone, where there is the 3.5G signal and some other data (I think the carrier name, in my case it is AT&T) it is only shown the antenna, with no any bar signal over it (like when you don't have signal at all). Please, notice this is not an X sign that usually it is when the phone is on "Offline Mode"
    8. I checked the Network, under Connectivity menu (I can enter on the menu pressing the front key on the lower left section of the phone). It shows "Network unavailable". I've got inside the Network menu. Operatior selection now is under "Manual" (it was under Automatic before). When I am entering to the Operator Selection a message says that I cannot change the operator since I am in "Offline Mode". I press the power button once, to change to Normal Mode. Nothing has changed.
    9. I have RESET the phone (*#7370). Phone starts again as a new phone, but the memory card has the same content (the memory card it is not formatted, even when I do the RESET).
    10. I've tried to configure the phone with my e-mail account settings but not adding any application (I thought that maybe the Fring was giving some problem, specially since it is configured by default to start the application when the phone startup. That's the way it is configurated on my N95 with no problem. Even not installing the FRING application the problem is still there: I turned off the phone, then I powered on and the screen was the same as I have described.
    11. I though that the problem could be some file copied from the N95, when I did the copier content, or when I just did the phone switch or when I did the copy and paste of my pictures (jpg) and mp3 files.
    12. The weird is that this is happening to me AGAIN on another phone. As I said, the previous one I have exchanged for this one since I thougt something wrong was with my phone. Obviously or there is something wrong with all N97 or there is another reason. But I need HELP!!!!!!
By the way, after this problem occured, when I left my pohne on for a while and it gets locks I cannot unlock it unless I remove battery and connect the usb cable.

    Ok.
I have tried that before already. It is the same as *#7370#. Just in case you ask, I tried both methods, the key sequence and the code imput, and just want to say that I will not loose all my data if I do it.  For example my pictures and songs are still there.
Actually I did this reset already..... 7 times? (more or less)
I did it on the FIRST n97 and also in the SECOND n97 machines (if you don't understand what I mean you will se my first post here where I describe all my nightmares)
BOTH has the same response. After a while, I turn it off/on and it is converted in a nice useless ornament.
Also, connecting my device to my PC trhough USB cable, if I do a search I can find some files related with previously installed applications like FRING (previously to the "hard reset" that I doubt it is a real hard reset, since it is not leaving the phone as the first time; does not format the whole memory on it).
BOTTOM LINE: this is not HELPING
By the way: yesterday I was surfing this place and I found another post named: "Re: how to fuly hard reset/format n97?", where for an instance you, radical24, has participated on it, too.
There is a post from bbianchi. He has uploaded some pictures that are actually showing what my phone does (looks like there are MANY doing the same outthere!!!). Specially the FIRST picture, where it shows the antenna with no signal (not Network available, even with my AT&T SIM card inside)

  • Limited network connectivity after reboot

I have a Windows Server 2008 sp2, and every time it does a reboot, I lose the network connection.  the system tray will either have a red x or it will say limited network connectivity.  If I run a repair it says the network cable is unplugged.
The only way I have found to resolve this is is to go into manage network connections, and disable the network adapter, and then enabling the network adapter.  This server worked fine for about three years, before the problem started occurring.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

I found a newer network driver, and will install probably on Monday.  This is the server that runs all our backups, so I have to wait to install the driver until the next backup job finishes.  The only warning I am getting is:
Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet #2: The network link is down.  Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.
If updating the driver does not help then it might something wrong with the NIC. You can try replacing it and see if that helps.

  • Does anyone know of an app or solution to searching SMB mounted Windows network volumes?

Are there any solutions out there for searching Windows volumes? Our file server runs on a Windows box and trying to search for files from my department's Macs is extremely hit and miss, mostly miss. I've done some searching but am coming up empty for an app or other solution to getting results when searching the file server.

  • Mount network volume: different users same credentials, see different shares

A set of network volumes on a NAS need to periodically be backed up to a local USB disk. Manually, I can mount most shares (from a Finder window). In a shell script I can list all files due (find) and use that list for backing up to a local USB volume (cpio). So far so good. However, I need to mount these network volumes first. The mount command doesn't seem to work for me.
How do I mount a network volume in a shell script?
Also I noticed that if under fast user switching user A logs in with credentials uName and uPassword, the NAS shows 6 shares to choose from. When user B on the same machine logs in with the same credentials uName and uPassword, only 5 shares are visible and one is not shown. It looks as if the credentials do not uniquely determine the volumes offered for mounting. Also, when user B mounts a share, it appears to be owned by user A (who is logged in but has not mounted any share on the NAS) rather than owned by B or by uName...
How do I mount this volume as user uName rather than A or B?
How can one uniquely determine the identity of the volume? Network volumes don't show UUIDs and the name given in the /Volume/ folder can change, as is discussed in message 11871367.

    eljonco wrote:
I just checked: after a reboot, user A logs in (automatic login enabled), user A logs out, user B logs in, ls -a /Volumes only shows local HD and a USB HD. No network mounts there.
In the finder window, the NAS shows up on the left. Clicking it and entering credentials uName, uPassword, a list of five, not 6, items is offered for mounting. So your options 1 and 4 are then ruled out, unless an alias made by user A and copied to user B's home folder would still link to user A's mounting options.
Actually, only option 1 is ruled out. That Finder list is simply not reliable. It is likely cached somewhere and could be restored by deleting some hidden preference file. It regularly causes people to freak out when they see some sharepoint listed on a network that they have long since left.
If you did Go > Connect to Server in the Finder and typed in the location, you could still create an alias.
Once mounted one of 5 shares as uName with uPassword, an ls -al /Volumes shows the local drives and
    drwx------@ 11 B staff <date> sharename
and all folders in sharename also show B:staff as user:group. I find that strange, as I did not log in to the share with credentials B, but with credentials uName. Anyhow.
The uName user is for the network share. When MacOS X mounts that, it gives it permissions appropriate for the user who did the mounting. If you did an NFS mount as root, the server would handle permissions via UNIX uid and gid. I'm really not familiar with the details of AFP.
As I read in a post about autoFS that 'cd /Volume/theHiddenShare' should magically mount that share, I gave it a shot. Alas, '/Volumes/theHiddenShare: No such file or directory'. Same long shot in the dark in the 'Go/Connect to' dialog gave 'The folder cannot be found'. Not surprisingly, I suppose.
Yes. That has to be setup
Here is what I've done to my /etc/auto_home:
    # Automounter map for /home
    #+auto_home     # Use directory service
    # Get /home records synthesized from user records
    #+/usr/libexec/od_user_homes
    myserver.org -allow_other,reconnect,fstype=sshfs [email protected]:/home/me_remote
I'm not on a big network, so I've disabled the system functionality by commenting out "+auto_home" and "+/usr/libexec/od_user_homes". Now, the system doesn't manage /home and I am free to do with it what I want. This will mount the path "/home/myserver.org" connected to the "me_remote" user on "myserver.org". I'm using the funky MacFUSE sshfs filesystem. Your AFP file system should work much better. Your line would look something like this:
    drive5 -fstype=afp uUser@MyLocalServer:/theHiddenShare
Run "automount -vc" to reset your automount system.
Next use Finder Go > Connect to Server and type in "afp://uUser@MyLocalServer:/theHiddenShare".
You want to mount the drive once so that you can store uPassword in your keychain.
    Now unmount the drive.
The Finder mounts all go into /Volumes and, as you have discovered, can get themselves confused. This automount will be at "/home/drive5". All you have to do is enter that folder in the Finder and it will be automatically mounted. If you haven't used it for a while, it will be unmounted automatically.
You may have to play around with this a little. I don't have any network AFP share that I need to mount on a regular basis, so those parameters may need to be adjusted somewhat.

  • Mounting Network Volumes in the Command line

What is the command for mounting a Network volume in a command line.... Plus when done this way will it get the password from keychain?

The command in question is mount:
    <pre class=command>mount -t type server:/path/to/share /path/to/mountpoint</pre>
This will mount the share /path/to/share from server server using protocol type (e.g. 'afp', 'nfs', 'smb'). The sharepoint will be mounted at the local /path/to/mountpoint
mount will not use the keychain. If you require passworded access you can either include the username and password in the command, or switch to using an AppleScript solution which can use the keychain, and can be involked via osascript:

  • Why don't network volume mounts (login items) configured in Profile Manager show up

Using Lion server and Lion clients.  Bound both the server and client to Active Directory and successfully got Profile Manager up and running.  All I really need from Profile Manager is the ability to mount network volumes so when the user logs in it mounts their home directory.  Please note we do not specify any home directory paths in AD.  I can login with my AD accounts on the Lion client and get other Profile Manager settings to work, however when I try and mount a network volume via login items nothing happens.  I am using SMB for this.  If I try to manually connect to the same path via Go -> Connect To Server it works fine.  For a simple test I even created a folder on one of my Windows servers D drive and shared it and within profile manager configured it as SMB://server/share and still nothing.  I tried setting it in the Dock section as well which I read in another post somewhere but all I get is a question mark.  I have tried all variations of server name, FQDN, ip address, etc.  I know it's not permissions since it works when I try it manually so am really at a loss here.  Is there any way to log what happens at login to see if it's even trying to mount the volume?  I do know the client is getting the profile since i can see it in system preferences but it never works.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

@bkma did you find any solution? i run into the same problem.

  • Mount a network disk at startup?

OK, so I know I can create an alias to a network drive and copy it into the System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items list.
But on my config when I startup, I pass over the login screen and go straight to the desktop. This seems to mean that the startup items don't run like they should... or at least the alias isn't called correctly, thus my network drive isn't mounted correctly.
Any ideas how to mount a network drive at startup without having to first stop at the login screen?
    Thanks!
    Jake

    Hi, Jake.
    1. You wrote: "But on my config when I startup, I pass over the login screen and go straight to the desktop."I presume you have configured your Mac to "Automatically log in as..." your account in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options.
Automatic login should not prevent items you have added to System Preferences > Accounts > your_account > Login Items from running. The items placed in this list are known as Login Items and are run when you log in to your account.
If you're interested in the technical details, see "The Boot Process".
    2. Under Tiger, the term Startup Items applies to applications that are run when you startup your Mac. They are in the following folders:• Macintosh HD > System > Library > StartupItems. These are System-related Startup Items included with Mac OS X.
    • Macintosh HD > Library > StartupItems. This is where third-party applications install other applications that are executed when you start up your Mac. Such applications run after the System-related Startup Items.Do not place the alias to your network volume in either of these folders. Never change the contents of the second folder unless specifically instructed to do so as part of troubleshooting.
    3. You wrote: "...my network drive isn't mounted correctly."Can you be more specific? What is incorrect about the mounting?  By "network drive" do you mean network-attached storage (brand/mode?) ? Or is this a volume being shared by another Mac or a PC?
    4. Are you saying that, if you disable automatic login on your account and restart your Mac, you are prompted to authenticate mounting the network volume, and then the volume mounts normally?
    5. Note that if the "network drive" is a volume being shared by another computer, and the computer sharing the volume isn't available (asleep, shutdown, AirPort off, offline, etc.) this could delay your login process a bit as your Mac tries to find it.
    Good luck!

Just installed a new Time Capsule to replace my router, and noticed that when I reboot my home machine the intial attempt to backup always fails. (Running OS X 10.7.2 on a early 2011 15 inch MBP.)

I then get a popup from Time Machine that says "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Wayne's Macbook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
I see "Time Machine Backups" on my desktop, and can access the drive via Finder.
If I use Finder to go into "Volumes" I can eject "Time Machine Backups" and the "Data" directory. If I then reselect the Time Capsule from the Time Machine settings window the backup works. Backups continue to work until the next time i reboot the machine.

Is the problem because something is causing the system to mount the Data drive at startup, then Time Machine tries to mount it again? Any suggestions? I've done some searching in the support forums and FAQs but can't find anything that seems to match my situation. (No doubt due to my inexperience with Time Capsule / Time Machine. <grin>)
Many things for any suggestions and/or links to suggested solutions so I dont' have to take any manual actions after a reboot.
    Wayne

At least if yours is a new Time Capsule you can beat up on Apple Support to get them to fix it.   So far no-one seems to have aroused Apple's interest in this issue.   I expect Apple have judged it less critical than whatever other teething problems have shown up with the launch of iCloud.  Apple are probably overwhelmed.

  • After reboot, iMac will not connect to wi-fi automatically

I very recently purchased iMac 27" with Intel i5.  The issue is the wi-fi disconnects after rebooting the cpu.  It doesn't connect automatically to the internet.  It sees the router but I have to select it to connect.  Although there is no need for me to re-enter the SSID password, it is a small inconvenience but I do not have to do this step for my other devices, like iPad, PC, etc.  The wi-fi is there after waking up from "sleep" mode, so no issue here.  I am currently using the OS X Lion.  I also purchased the Mountain Lion but balked to install it yet because I read some reviews about it that it slows down some MacBooks (with retina).  Could Mountain Lion have solved this wi-fi issue?  Or should I take the iMac back to the store and let them fix it for me?

ML has caused more of this problem I believe.
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:

    Or whatever Interface you use.
    If not take it back.
