Automating Import-Export in Excel

Hi all
Any clue on how to automate the process of importing and exporting a text file into excel spread sheet?
The text file can be a tab demimited, bar delimited...or any thing.
So any ideas on how I can do this?
Thanx in advance
-kms

yes. I need to use Java to convert the text files into excel files.
The text files are normal .txt files.
To be more precise they are tab delimited files.
So I need to automate the whole process of importing and exporting the files into excel.

  • Another question about import/export to excel file?

    Hi, I need to know urgently if it's possible to import/export excel files from/to JSP with unpredicted number of fields each row. For example, row 1 in the excel file can have 5 columns of data, row 2 has 3 columns of data, etc...
    Does reading from excel file in JSP require that we know beforehand how many columns there are and what each column represent?

    go read http://jakarta.apache.org/poi !!!!!!
    No it doesnt. the POI api provide method to determine the number of cells in a row.

  • Any method to Import & Export to Excel from Client Side

    Hi,
    Is there any method to Import and Export to Excel from the Client side. I have one procedure to export to Excel , but the excel file will be opened in the Application Server only, even if it executed from the client side. Also this procedure will not work if OLE2 chnaged CLIENT_OLE2. I am writing my procedure, Is there any idea to get it in the client side.

    Alternatively you could use OLE2 to do the bulk of the importing and exporting and then use the webutil file transfer functions to move the file to the client and then simply open the file there...That might be more efficient in terms of performance as well.

  • Import/Export from Excel ?

    Many revisions of Nokia PC Suite ago, using my PC I used to be able to import my phones address book to a .CSV file...open it in Excel....tidy it up neatly using Excel....save it as a .CSV file...and then export it back to my phone.
    I've been without a Nokia for a while now for corporate reasons, but am now back and want to do it again.
    That functionality doesnt appear to be there in the new version pf PC Suite. Can anyone confirm whether it is possible, or whether I can still get hold of an early version do what I want ?
    Any help will be gratefully received.
    Thanks, Si

    I don't know if this will help but I've just successfully managed to import old SMS messages created with a Samsung phone, into my new Nokia X6 I'm would imagine that it will work with contacts too (?) What I did was this:
    1 - Using the other phone's software, I exported the info into an Excel file.
    2- Using PC Suite, I then exported one single message to a CSV file and noted the layout: It seems to be that there are hidden attributes in the file that are particular to Nokia, so the key was to use this file as a template rather that trying to mimic it with the first Samsung xls sheet.
    3 - In this Samsung sheet I changed the date/hour format to match Nokia's by using the Windows Regional and Language options in Control Panel - noting that the seperator was a dot, hence: YYYY.MM.DD HH.MM (There are no 'seconds')
    4 - Going back to the Nokia Excel 'template', by dragging the cell information down to the number of SMS's I wanted to import PLUS 1 , I copied the info down for columns A, B, C and F. This seemed to keep the hidden information that lies in row 1.
    5 - Then I simply copied and pasted the date/time information into row 2, to the bottom of the required rows, and then did exactly the same with the SMS messages.
    6 - I then saved this as a CSV file and imported it back via PC Suite into my phone.
    Hey presto - it worked !!
    In my case they were all messages from the same number but if that wasn't the case, I would have copied and pasted that information in too and I don't see how it wouldn't have worked.
    So - to sum up - the important Excel information is carried in row 1 - so keep it there !
    Good luck !

  • Need help for automated import/export of comments in XFDF

    Hi !
    I created 2 Buttons on my toolbar. One for send comments and one for receive comments! If I click the send button, a window opens and ask for the directory where I want to save the xfdf file.
    How can i realize, that I can save the xfdf-file automatic in a folder, which is specified in the javascript file? The same for import!
    In web I found:
    cExec: "this.importAnXFDF({bAnnotations: true, cPath: /c/PDFTest/Demo.xfdf});",     and
    cExec: "this.exportAsXFDF({bAnnotations: true, cPath: /c/PDFTest/Demo.xfdf});",

    Please help!!  Thanks

    Doc is the type of object, so you would not use Doc.exportAsXFDF.
    In most cases you can use "this", but be careful as "this" will not always refer to the current document, it will refer to whatever object you are currently working within the parameters of.
    The security restrictions are quite clear, but I will sum up just to be sure.  You CAN specify the cPath parameter in the following conditions:
    Batch Process
    Running the code manually from the console
    Executing exportAsXFDF through an OLE call via the JSObject from an external application written in C/C++/C#/VB.NET/etc.
    Those are the ONLY times that you can specify the cPath parameter in the exportAsXFDF call.  If you try to specify it in any other instance, the call will fail and nothing will be exported.  This means that you CAN NOT specify the cPath parameter from a document-level script, folder-level script, menu item call, etc.

  • Any wifi/3g Bidirectional sync ways instead of import/export documents ?

    Is there any way or any software for mac & ipad that will do bi-directional sync using 3G/Wi-Fi instead of importing/exporting for Excel  & Pages documents?

    I do this using Documents2Go Premium and a 3rd party cloud storage app (both Dropbox and Sugarsync - although I use the former much more than the latter).

  • How do I keep formatting while importing/exporting from/to excel using Numbers for Ipad

    I have an excel file that I export to Numbers on my Ipad. The problem is I lose all of my formatting. I use a lot of linking cells in the excel version of the file. And even when I work on the Numbers version of the file and put in the pop up menus, I lose those when I export to excel. Is there any way to keep this formatting when exporting/importing?
    Thanks for the help.

    Migintosh, I hadn't thought of that, but turns out that is my problem. I seems when I place the file, indesign in automatically changing those values. Is there a way to force indesign keep those at 0 (or whatever value I want) as I place the text? Right now, what happens is I place the text and then have to select all and manually set the before and after to 0 since indesign decides to change the after spacing to 0.1389.

  • Selective excel table import/export

    I need to run an SQL script that will selectively (select * from <TABLE> where <"TransactionRunDate" older than 6 months from SystemDate>) remove all rows from three table and simultaneously write them into excel sheets. Then, I need an SQL script that can restore the data from these Excel tables into the Oracle tables (on demand)
    How can I do this without right clicking import/export on the GUI (SQLDeveloper), but with SQL script alone?
    Edited by: user10403078 on Oct 7, 2008 11:32 PM

    I would half agree with daniel and half not agree.
    You can't but you can. As for whether you should is a different matter.
    I say you can because it's possible to do something like you are looking for. You could even get it to write out Excel workbooks with worksheets using Microsofts office XML format and then use an ODBC connection to read the data back again into an Oracle database using Heterogeneous services, but it's complicated and not easily demonstrated with what little time I have.
    However, an alternative is to write the data out to CSV files and then use External tables to read those CSV files back again. Example...
    Firstly, here's my table with some data in it, some of which is more than 6 months old...
    SQL> select * from table1;
            ID CREATED_DATE        TXT
             1 13/12/2007 09:31:08 Old Fred
             2 01/02/2008 09:31:08 Old Bob
             3 22/03/2008 09:31:08 Old Jim
             4 11/05/2008 09:31:08 Young Fred
             5 30/06/2008 09:31:08 Young Bob
             6 19/08/2008 09:31:08 Young Jim
             7 08/10/2008 09:31:08 New Me
    7 rows selected.Now, I create a DELETE trigger on that table so if any rows are deleted this will fire. To allow for rows less than 6 months old to be deleted without being archived to file I put a check in the trigger too...
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  create or replace trigger trg_del
      2  after delete on table1
      3  for each row
      4  declare
      5    v_dir  VARCHAR2(30) := 'TEST_DIR';
      6    v_file VARCHAR2(30) := 'table1_archive.csv';
      7    v_fh   UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE;
      8  begin
      9    IF months_between(sysdate, :OLD.created_date) >= 6 THEN
    10      -- Only archive a deleted row if it's greater than 6 months old
    11      v_fh := UTL_FILE.FOPEN(v_dir, v_file, 'a', 32767);
    12      UTL_FILE.PUT_LINE(v_fh, TO_CHAR(:OLD.ID,'fm9999')||','||TO_CHAR(:OLD.CREATED_DATE,'YYYYMMDDHH24MISS')||',"'||:OLD.TXT||'"');
    13      UTL_FILE.FCLOSE(v_fh);
    14    END IF;
    15* end;
    SQL> /
    Trigger created.So now, I have a trigger that will write deleted rows of data out in CSV format to a file called table1_archive.csv.
    Now I can create an external table that can read that CSV file...
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  CREATE TABLE table1_archive (
      2         id            NUMBER,
      3         created_date  DATE,
      4         txt           VARCHAR(200)
      5         )
      6  ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL (
      7    TYPE oracle_loader
      8    DEFAULT DIRECTORY TEST_DIR
      9      ACCESS PARAMETERS (
    10      RECORDS DELIMITED BY NEWLINE
    11      BADFILE 'bad_%a_%p.bad'
    12      LOGFILE 'log_%a_%p.log'
    13      FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
    14      MISSING FIELD VALUES ARE NULL
    15      REJECT ROWS WITH ALL NULL FIELDS
    16        (id
    17        ,created_date date "yyyymmddhh24miss"
    18        ,txt)
    19      )
    20      LOCATION ('table1_archive.csv')
    21    )
    22  PARALLEL
    23  REJECT LIMIT 0
    24* NOMONITORING
    SQL> /
    Table created.
    {code}
    And now we can prove it works...
    Firstly, delete rows from the table that are 6 months or more old...
    {code}
    SQL> delete from table1
      2  where months_between(sysdate, created_date) >= 6;
    3 rows deleted.
    SQL> select * from table1;
            ID CREATED_DATE        TXT
             4 11/05/2008 09:31:08 Young Fred
             5 30/06/2008 09:31:08 Young Bob
             6 19/08/2008 09:31:08 Young Jim
             7 08/10/2008 09:31:08 New Me
    {code}
    So those rows have been deleted, now let's check they're in the archive CSV file...
    {code}
    SQL> select * from table1_archive;
            ID CREATED_DATE        TXT
             1 13/12/2007 09:31:08 Old Fred
             2 01/02/2008 09:31:08 Old Bob
             3 22/03/2008 09:31:08 Old Jim
    SQL>

    There they are, and that CSV file can also be read by Excel if required.
    Let's just check that we don't archive rows that are deleted if they are less than 6 months old...
    {code}
    SQL> delete from table1 where id = 6;
    1 row deleted.
    SQL> select * from table1;
            ID CREATED_DATE        TXT
             4 11/05/2008 09:31:08 Young Fred
             5 30/06/2008 09:31:08 Young Bob
             7 08/10/2008 09:31:08 New Me
    SQL> select * from table1_archive;
            ID CREATED_DATE        TXT
             1 13/12/2007 09:31:08 Old Fred
             2 01/02/2008 09:31:08 Old Bob
             3 22/03/2008 09:31:08 Old Jim
    SQL>
    {code}
    So that row was deleted without being archived.  Just what I intended.

  • Automated exports to excel

    is there anyway to have a scheduled report - automatically export to excel and email the attachment to a distribution list?
    is there another tool i can use in conjunction with discoverer to get this to work.
    pareena

    Hi Pareena
    Please do the folowing...
    1. Install Discoverer on a server/ PC which will never be shut down
    2. Install a programm called WINAT (or any other Event scheduler ) also on the server.
    3. Create a batch file which will invoke Discoverer, open an wbook and sheet from the databse, execute it and get it to export the result as an EXCEL to a folder on the Server. Sample code is ...
    C:\orant\discvr31\DIS31USR.EXE /APPS_GWYUID APPLSYSPUB/PUB /APPS_FNDNAM APPS /APPS_USER /APPS_RESPONSIBILITY "ABCD" /connect login/password@connect string /batch /opendb "WorkBook Name" /sheet Number /export XLS C:\report_name.xls.
    4. Create yet an another batch file which will pick up this excel file and email it to an email group.
    We have been successfully sending out Excel version of a critical report to a set of people every week day morning at 5:00 am using the above route.
    All the best.
    Thanks

  • Automating the import / export process in 9.0.2

    In Portal 3.0.9.x the export and import were entirely command-line driven tools, so it was possible to automate the process to a certain degree.
    In 9.0.2 the import/export process is a combination of scripts and manual actions through the Portal UI to import and export the transport sets.
    Is there any way in 9.0.2 to automate this process ?

    You make me feel better. I am having THE problem. Logs say it was all a success but NOTHING is imported. I tried with portal 9.0.2.2.22 on Win2000 and now I'll try it on 9.0.2.2.14A on Sun. What did you use?

    Hi Luo
    As per below link
    How to... MDG-M: Use the Data Import Framework | SCN
    The IDoc doesn't support flex entities, as they don't write into active area. Therefore, the DIF can only be used to load reuse entities in staging or active area.

  • Export to excel issue

    Hi All,
    Kindly help me in solving this issue.
    Portals report layouts can be customized. When the user chooses to export
    the customized reports to Excel, only the standard layout (hard coded
    layout for each report) is exported to Excel and all the customized columns
    are not exported.
    C&RM is planning to use the portals aging report for performance metrics,
    collection and identifying the over 90 items for collection rep. The
    standard layout for the portals aging report is missing the BP# and
    Collection rep name.
    Choosing right click, select all and copying to Excel, the format of the
    report is lost.
    Herewith I am attaching the code which needs modification.

    Hook method called to modify a view just before rendering.
    This method conceptually belongs to the view itself, not to the
    controller (cf. MVC pattern).
    It is made static to discourage a way of programming that
    routinely stores references to UI elements in instance fields
    for access by the view controller's event handlers, and so on.
    The Web Dynpro programming model recommends that UI elements can
    only be accessed by code executed within the call to this hook method.
    @param wdThis Generated private interface of the view's controller, as
           provided by Web Dynpro. Provides access to the view controller's
           outgoing controller usages, etc.
    @param wdContext Generated interface of the view's context, as provided
           by Web Dynpro. Provides access to the view's data.
    @param view The view's generic API, as provided by Web Dynpro.
           Provides access to UI elements.
    @param firstTime Indicates whether the hook is called for the first time
           during the lifetime of the view.

    Regards,

    Hi, I finally found the issue which was causing the numbers stored in text format issue. While exporting data to Excel programatically if any of the cells precede with a special character like -. = etc.. the data which is exported after that starts behaving in a peculiar way. So removal of any such special characters resolves the issue.
    Hope this helps..

  • Sql server reporting services + export to excel + embedded images

    Hi all,
    i got a problem when exporting to excel in ssrs 2008.
    i use embedded image in the report. but when i export the report to excel, image is being exported but its width is being changed to size 0 .
    but when i click on it and expand it explicitly in excel it is being expanded .
    how to make the image by default to its actual width?
    how to fix this problem ?

    Hi sudeep Puvvadi,
    Based on the information posted, I have a test with SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 (SSRS2008) and Microsoft
    Excel 2010 by the following steps:
    From the Toolbox window, drag the image to the top edge of the design surface.
    In the image Properties dialog box, select Embedded from the Select The Image Source drop-down list.
    Click import, and select a BMP file from my local computer.
    Right-click the image, select Image Properties. In Size category, select Original size.
    Export the report to excel.
    When opening the excel file, the image displays with original size rightly. So I suggest you to add an image with
    the same steps above, then checking whether the image shows correctly. If it still cannot work fine for you, could you please give me a feedback and tell me related settings, so that I can reproduce the scenario exactly and provide further assistance?
    Thanks,
    Lola Wang

  • Best way to create dataset to be exported in Excel for further elaboration

    Hello experts!
    I need help with some of my custormers, that perform their work in a way that I partially disagree.  They work in BOXI R3.1 SP3.
    They use webi on top of relational universes (DWH layer in Oracle DB).
    We created reports in webi that cover their standard analysis, but for their spot analysis they find difficult to work in webi.
    I think that it partially depends on lack of known of the tool (even if they have been trained).
    Anyway they need a solution to this issue:
    they wont create in webi a basic set of information inserting reclassifications of information and some calculation in webi. Then they need to export information in excel to do their on spot calculations. Those dataset are often big, so they find following issues:
    1)they tried to use Live Office to import the table they need but the limit of the datastream size is reached quickly (currently limit is 50Mb in our settings , but is reached even from report that exported with Save to my computer As Excel are not more than 10Mb ). I discussed with B.O. administrator and increasing much more this treashold affects general  performances of other services.
    2)Exporting in excel with Save As is quite cumbersome and they can't use .xlsx format as it is only supported by BI4.0 .So they get tables with more than 64K rows splitted over many sheets.
    3)They also tried to export in CSV format to eventually further elaborate in Access, but .CSV only retrieve the information of the Microcube extracted by the query, not the data elaborated in the report.
    Anyone can suggest further ways to behave?
    Kind regards.
    Roberto.

    there are 3 options I see :
    1. Learn to use webi, it can do everything excel can and more
    2. I question ability of anyone to deal with that much data in excel, you should agregate data on DB side and push most of calculations there. Then your exports will be much smaller.
    Better designed semantic layer will allow your users to get needed data quicker and in less volume, making their work in webi or in excel easier.
    3. Use DF/DI products as ETL tools into your Excel users.
