Automator, iMovie and Applescript problem

Hi,
I'm trying to convert a .mov file to .mp4 using Visualhub and automator, but a step in my automator file uses an applescript step that just causes the automator flow to stop and the end and not gon one with the rest of the actions.
More specifically:-
1. I use my HD camera to film something.
2. Connect the camera to my mac.
3. Import the video using iMovie.
4. My Automator actions ask me to confirm that iMovie has finished the import
5. Then Ask for finder items, which is get the newly imported .mov into VisualHub
6. Run the problematic Applescript:-
on run {input, parameters}
--we need to unset the default timeout length of two minutes, we'll make it 45
with timeout of (45 * 60) seconds
tell application "VisualHub" to set VisualHub to load script (scripts path of main bundle & "/automation.scpt" as POSIX file)
tell VisualHub
LoadSettings("/Volumes/MyBook/hd.cam.settings.vhub")
--SetSaveLocation("YOURHARDDRIVE:Users:YOURNAME:Desktop:iphonemovies:temp")
AddFiles(input)
StartConversion()
QuitApp()
end tell
end timeout
return input
--delay 15
end run
Which I've used from this site (http://professafresh.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/fun-with-automator/) and just stopped the two lines with a comment marker.
What is supposed to happen after that is that
7. Automator asks to confirm that VisualHub has finished.
8. VisualHub quits
9. Finder finds the .mov that was created when the film was imported
10. Finder then moves the item to the trash.
So there is something going on with the applescript that causes the process to stop after the conversion.
Some points:-
1. I have used the VisualHub import and convert script step but the default settings are not what I'm after as I want the video resized to 960x540.
2. iMovie recognizes and keeps all the head info as long as the file name is the same. So if you skip over the thumbnail in iMovie the timestamp changes to reflect the time that the video was taken. If you convert the .mov to .mp4 the info is retained but with a much smaller video size.
I've tried to give as much info as possible, sorry if it's too much.
Regards,

  • IMovie and iPhoto problem after restoring iPhone 5 from backup

    Isnt iMovie and iPhoto supposed to be free for iPhone 5 when we bought it?
    When i first tried my iphone, imovie and iphoto is there. i even tested it. then after yesterday i restore it from my backup on my Macbook Air, those 2 apps are gone. I dont know what went wrong.
    My previous phone is iPhone 4. So supposedly i restore it from the iphone 4 backup data. I doubt that would be the problem, isnt it?

  • Photo booth, imovie and iphoto problem

    photo booth, imovie and iphoto are not working in my macbook pro. when i try to open one of these apps a question mark appears and i can not open any of them.

    Did you move any of those applications? A question mark in the Dock means that the original application cannot be found. You've either moved or deleted them. Try to do a Spotlight search for each to see if you can find them.

  • Imovie and iphoto problem

    I started a new movie in imovie and noticed i couldn't add photos from the "media" button(from iphoto). I restarted the computer and when i tried to open the movie, i got a message saying this movie was saved with an older version of imovie and will be changed if you try to open it here...I opened it anyway and all the video clips were in the trash. I still can't access iphoto from imovie and now all my photos in iphoto are gone! What did i go wrong?

  • Help me! Airport and Applescript problem

    Hi all!
    I'm here for a very silly question. I need to activate a "computer-to-computer" airport connection
    automatically.
    I thought Applescript could help me.
    The thing to do is to click OK in the dialog box that appears when you click "create network"
    Here what I've done:
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "SystemUIServer"
    tell menu bar 1
    tell menu bar item 1
    click
    tell menu 1
    click menu item 7
    tell window "Computer-to-Computer"
    click button 1
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    The Dialog Window appears but Applescript return an error:
    NSreceiverEvaluationScriptError:4
    What I can do?
    Please helpme to solve this small script!
    Many thankks in advance and all the best
    Paul

    The "Computer-to-Computer" window isn't a part of the menu, so you need to take that statement out of the "tell menu bar" statement:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFDDFF;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "System Events" to tell process "SystemUIServer"
    tell menu bar 1
    set menu_extras to value of attribute "AXDescription" of menu bar items
    repeat with the_menu from 1 to the count of menu_extras
    if item the_menu of menu_extras is "Airport Menu Extra" then exit repeat
    end repeat
    tell menu bar item the_menu
    click
    delay 0.5
    click menu item "Create Network…" of front menu
    delay 0.5
    end tell
    end tell
    click button "OK" of window "Computer-to-Computer"
    end tell
    </pre>
    Note that the menu extra can change location and the number of items in it can vary.

    Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.

  • I have a Panasonic FZ38 HD camera. I can load and view my hd movies onto iMovie with no problems via my camera or a card reader.  When I try to copy my hd videos from my old Windows pc to my new iMac, the picture speed has doubled but the sound is normal.

    I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ38 HD camera and have lots of hd movie clips stored on my old Windows Pc using Photofun software supplied by Panasonic, which I want to transfer to my new Imac computer.   I am able to copy my most recent movies that are still on the memory card from my camera onto Imovie and view them with no problems at all.  When it comes to copying my old existing hd movies stored on my Windows Pc (and which are no longer stored on a memory card), I discover that when I view them on the Imovie, the speed has doubled but the sound is normal.   In order to transfer my old movies I have copied them back  onto a memory card (SDHC - the same card as previously used) and then put the card back into my camera and then copied them onto my Imac via the camera USB.   I have also used a card reader but get the same result.     If I view the same movie through my camera, or look at it on my old pc, it plays at normal speed.    Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening please?

    have you read and watch the Tutorials..? :

    iM is a bit.. iffy, when it comes to the definition, what a 'camera' is. historically, only tape based machines were a movie-camera. nowadays still-cams allow movin' images too..
    but, as mentioned above: the intended workflow is: material from photo cameras (even when they move) => import via iPhoto; material from video cameras (even when they don't move.. ) => iMovie
    when the import is done, you'll notice in all iLife apps the 'media browser' - in iM09, on the very right, the icon with a camera on.. click it, presto, all (incl. your 'videos') your iPhoto Library at hand for usage in iMovie.

  • I have problems with my films that become slightly jerky after I have imported and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD. I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally and vertically. I shoot with a camcorder Canon

    I have problems with my films that become slightly jerky after I have imported
    and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD.
    I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
    I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
    When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
    Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

  • I made a movie on iMovie and went to burn to DVD and of course I could not...contacted Apple and they said to download an app to help solve this problem...i did..so I could finally burn a DVD, but it will not play on my DVD player...HELP!!!

    I made a movie on IMovie and went to burn it to a DVD ...I could not do this so I contacted Apple..they had me download an App and then I could make a DVD...but it will not play on my DVD player...does anyone know how I can solve this problem.. I purchased this to make DVD's and now I can not do that!!

    This is a known issue.  It really comes down to two key factors - what type of DVD are you burning to + what type of DVD player you have.
    This article will help.  It's lengthy and can be technical in some parts but should shed some light on your problem.

  • Problem with iTunes compatability with iMovie and iPhoto

    I purchased some music from the iTunes music store and wanted to use that music in a homemade DVD I made. I also have tried using the purchased music when I play a slideshow in iPhoto. In both instances, an error window popped up saying that I needed to launch iTunes and authorize the computer to play the song... Well I bougth the music on the same computer and it is authorized. I typed in the authorization anyways and then after that iMovie and iPhoto both pop up with an error saying that it can't use the file.
    Thinking it might just be one song file... I have tried this with many purchased song. I have had the same problem with all of the purchased songs I've tried.
    Are some purchased songs not compatable with the iLife applications? How can I fix this problem? I'm running iLife 05 and I have installed all of the updates, including the most recent...
    iTunes 6.0.2
    iPhoto 5.0.4
    iMovie HD 5.0.2

    Do you need to update Quicktime as well?

  • I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  Help!

    I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  I'm uising photos in my project, not video.  Help!

    You can split a project in two by doing this.
    1) Go to the Project Library View.
    2) Select your project, and click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Give it a name like "your project name - part 1".
    3) Do this again. This time name it "your project name - part 2"
    4) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the second half.
    5) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the first half of the project.
    At the end you should have your original project, plus the same project in two parts.

  • Problems importing into iMovie and which is the required space..

    Hi Karsten!
    I could see that you know about video editing. And I have some problems and doubts I would like to ask.
    The thing is that I have just bougth an ibook of 80 Gb hard disk RAM 512 MB Speed 1.67 GHz and I am trying to edit a documentary with it. The thing is that I started to importing images from a HDV 1080i Sony Camcorder into iMovie and the speed wasnt in real time, was slowing down to half of the original speed. I went to visit the help of iMovie it was saying when it happens is due to the desfragmentation of the disk, but I dont know if it is the real problem, it is a new computer, and how I can solve it.
    And I also would like to know if I could have better results in the video importing and editing with an external hard driver other wise I could add more ram and more memory for the hard disk in the computer...
    And the last thing, I would like to know how much space would I need in my computer for install and using Final Cut Pro and if it would be easy with more memory or an external hard drive...
    Please Karsten or whoever who can have knowledge about these matter could help me. I really need it so much to start with my docu...
    Thank you

    "..which is the difference between FCP and FCE?.."
    FCE is Final Cut Express, a cheaper and 'cut-down' version of FCP (Final Cut Pro).
    FCE changes HDV (hi-definition) video into a slightly different format called 'Apple Intermediate Codec' when it's importing HDV material - just like iMovie HD does. This means that importing is generally slower than importing ordinary DV, because the movie has to be converted while it's importing. On a G4 PowerBook or iBook HDV might import at half-speed, or take even longer (..maybe 4x 'real time'), as you've found.
    The latest version of FCP can import HDV, and edit it, without any conversion, Apple says. But I don't know if that applies on any Mac, or if that needs a special capture card to be fitted into a PowerMac. In theory, I'd expect that importing and editing HDV using FCP HD 5 (..the latest version..) would be faster than on a PowerBook - because there's no conversion involved - but I can't say for certain till I receive my latest version of FCP (..I just did an Apple "cross-grade" to convert my FCP HD 4.5 into FCP HD 5).
    HDV doesn't take up any more room on a tape than normal DV, because the high-definition is 'squashed' onto the tape, using MPEG-2 compression. Because iMovie HD and FCE HD can't handle this kind of compressed material directly, they convert it into the Apple Intermediate Codec, and that form of the video takes up more storage on a hard disc than the normal DV does!
    So although normal DV uses about 13 gigabytes of hard disc space per hour of running time, the converted HDV (..converted into 'AIC'..) takes up, er ..I'm looking for a recent project ..most are on an external disc ..are here's a simple one: one-and-a-quarter minutes' worth uses 904 megabytes; nearly 1 gigabyte! ..Here's another: four-and-a-half minutes' worth takes up 6.5 gigabytes!
    Using normal DV, 6.5 gigabytes would hold half an hour's worth of video, not 4.5 minutes' worth!
    So you will need a big external hard disc to store hi-def footage. At least, with iMovie HD or FCE HD.
    I don't know if FCP HD 5 would store imported footage in the original HDV format, that is with the same storage requirements of ordinary DV - like HDV tapes. If so, that means that you could store hi-def (..if you're using FCP HD 5..) in just the same amount of space as normal DV ..but I don't know for sure. Maybe you could ask in the FCP Discussions. I probably can't tell you till next week or so..
    Where to get a 300gb hard disc? I'm sure there must be at least one shop, or electronics store, in Istanbul which sells them at reasonable prices. Otherwise, look online. There are many companies which now sell 300gb discs: Maxtor and LaCie, for example. But you do need one with a FireWire connection; not just USB. You don't need to buy from an Apple store: buy one from any computer shop ..an external hard disc for a PC works exactly the same ..but you must format it for use with a Mac, as described before.
    All I know of Istanbul is Cumhuriyet Caddesi, Taksim Square, and the areas around what used to be the floating bridge, and the Spice Market, and round Haigha Sophia, but there must be lots of computer shops somewhere in the city.
    "..I have never used iMovie for editing, I understood it is only good for capturing, sample and concise.." and it's also good for transitions, titles, adding photos and audio, adding video effects and for audio tweaking. And it integrates perfectly with iPhoto, iDVD, GarageBand ..and now 'iWeb'.

  • IMovie newbie with problems and questions

    I first posted this in iMovie 9 which was incorrect. I am at iMovie version 6.0.3.
    I am new to iMovie and am struggling with my first project. My current problem is with transitions and playback. I have added a transition between my first and second clips and it shows in the clip viewer. However, when I click on the first clip and click play the clip plays to it's end but the transition does not start. If I then click on the transition and click play it goes through the transition but the next clip doesn't start to play. In fact, none of the clips play unless I click on the specific clip and click play. I would expect the entire movie to play from start to finish. Am I missing something? The iMovie Getting Started instructions are not very helpful
    Thank you

    Sorry guys (Klaus and Karsten). I didn't look thoroughly enough (most unlike me)! When the iMovie Help window appears (following the link Klaus provided), it is blank. But then I clicked on the Home button - the middle icon shaped like a house at the top left of the window. Immediately, the Help Index appeared from which I could access all the items.
    How embarrassing - I should have known better, having used Help many times in the past (in all versions of iMovie).
    Apologies also for my comment about Apple removing Support articles! I think baby sitting yesterday threw me off a bit
    For the benefit of other users (including John Hendrie, the OP), this is the link we are talking about (as kindly provided by Klaus): http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/6.0/en/imv1096.html
