Automator to change settings

I'm working on creating an image for our company and I've got all the software installed ok.  But I want to create  workflow that will do the following:
- turn off automatic login
- change display login window as "name and password"
- make sure Show Input menu in login window is selected
- allow faster user switching
- require password immediately after screen saver begins
- turn on remote management
How much can be done in automator or am I expecting too much?

I think the last line is confusing.  I'm logged in with my userid and I don't see a Library folder in my user folder.
That confuses me. What do you get in a shell from "ls -ld@ ~/Library"?
Is there a folder that the Mac OS X uses when creating a new user to replicate that I could drop the settings in?  Or would I have to write a script to copy the settings from a shard safe location when the user first logs in?
There's a template for new user accounts at /System/Library/User Template. I've never tried to modify it, but I guess you could. If you're not going to go with Open Directory, I guess the next best option would be to distribute a LaunchAgent that would run a script at each user login to set the user preferences with defaults(1). I repeat, however, that this wouldn't prevent the users from changing the preferences you set.

    I have a similar problem with the ultra sensitive trackpad with the "Clicking, Dragging, Drag lock" checked in Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse. I'm always turning them on and off depending on which application I am using.
    My problem is that when I record a series of actions in Automator, the resulting action list has no text behind the action for the mouse click for the Clicking checkbox. Its as though it doesn't even know that its there. All of the other actions show up.
    Got any ideas on how to fill that void or another workflow that would do the same thing ? I think that running the workflow again would turn it back on as the actions are identical.

    No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

    I had the same thing happen to me.  It's a bug in iPhoto 9.4.2.
    The first time you run iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2, it "updates the iPhoto library".  This sometimes tickles a bug where iTunes can see all your iPhoto albums, but iTunes thinks they are empty.  Since iTunes thinks all your albums are empty, it dutifully deletes any photos from your synced iOS devices.
    It's easy to tell if this is the problem you are seeing.  Open iTunes and go to the photos sync panel for one of your iOS devices.  If you have multiple albums checked, but iTunes shows a total of 0 photos, then you have the problem.
    I spent an hour with an Apple Genius.  he couldn't find any mention of this problem in their internal support system.  His recomendation was to reinstall the operating the system.  I suspect that this won't solve it.
    The only solution I have found is to restore iPhoto 9.4.1 and the corresponding iPhoto library from your backups.
    I would refrain from upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.2 until Apple has a fix for this issue.

    Since upgrading Iphone to iOS 5.1.1 it does not automatically divert to my wi-fi internet when wifi is available in my home. It has been draining my mobile data I  now have very high bills from my mobile carrier for high data usage. I can only manually change settings in the Network and turn cellular data on and off everytime I get home and leave the home. This is very frustrating as it wasn't a  problem until the upgrade. I have spoken to a few people that this has happened to. Has anyone found this problem and does anyone have other solutions?

    As far as I know, deleting the messages on the iPad should not affect them on the iPad. I delete messages on one device and it doesn't affect the messages on the other device since they are stored locally on the device. And ... I am using my iPhone number as the contact address on both devices,
    You can create another ID for texting on the iPad, but it's not an absolute must. You just need to use your Apple ID email address, or any other working email address for that matter - as the contact at address on the iPad for texting. As long as you use the iPhone number on the phone and the email address on the iPad, texting paths shall never cross.

    Here what I am looking for. Once a while ago I found this neat JavaScript that allowed me to find and remove all those dead tracks that turn up in iTunes. This have been very useful to me.
    Recently I posted asking if someone could create a JavaScript that would allow me to change the Options in a specific menu found in iTunes. To get to the menu you select the podcast or song and then right-click on it. Then you select the Options tab from the window that opens. On that window I need to check that checkbox that says, "Remember Playback Position". I have grown tired of hunting for all the newly added tracks to iTunes so I thought someone out there could create a JavaScript for me that allows me to double click on the script and have the script go through some 400 files and turn this Option on. This would make my like a lot easier!!
    I hope someone here can do this. I think it is simple. I would try it but I don't Code and I don't know how to access and control iTunes by script.
    A very nice man named Robert gave it a try in VBS but I don't know if it works. I can't get the script to run.
    I'd feel safer if it was a Javascript over VBS. All I remember is changing settings on my system to make it harder for VBS to run.
    If anyone can help, wants to help of has any suggestions, please reply. I'm am just tired of making these changes every time Juice update my iTunes Playlists.
    There must be a better way!

    The first time I posted this, Robert solved my scripting issue with a VBS code. I would like to have something in JavaScript so it can live along with the existing JS files I use. I guess this doesn't have to happen because Robert did such a fine job. And the scripts can still live in the same directory.
    If there is anybody out there willing to give it a try please do so. I would appreciate having the final JS file.

  • Mail is changing settings in preferences!

    Lots of users are exposed to the Mail 3 bug (Leopard) where Mail is randomly changing settings in "Preferences"-"Account"-"Advanced" from "Password" to "APOP".
    (The visual effect of this bug for the average user is that Mail will promt you for a password-dialogue box, which of course is useless trying to enter, since the settings has been changed in the preferences)
    This is only in conjunction with certain Pop accounts and happens when Mail is connecting to the Pop-server (This happens most often the first time Mail connects after launch).
    The Pop accounts affected are (as far as I know) Verizon in USA, Demon in England and Glocalnet in Sweden.
    There are probably more Pop account-providers that are affected so I want as many reports as possible from people with this problem.

    This definitely is happening to me. I've had a Mac mini for only a month and have a dot MAC email account and my local dial-up ISP account.
    Had a number of issues setting these up and after re-doing them 3 or 4 times, finally got them both working. Three days later, the dot MAC stopped working because Mail was trying to log on with SSL. It had been working fine before this. When I turned the machine on in the morning and went online, I kept getting error messages from the dot MAC system.
    It's very annoying.
    How does Thunderbird for the MAC work? Maybe that is the solution to this one.

    It sounds like the PC is trying to transmit the video at a resolution greater than what the monitor can support.

    I'm having a little trouble understanding the part about your password having to be reset. Why is that happening??
    Let's start with Firefox's settings:
    (1) You can configure the password manager feature on this tab:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Security
    There is a checkbox to enable/disable the feature.
    There also is a "Saved Passwords" button to review and remove any passwords you do not want Firefox to keep.
    That tab also has a feature to set a Master Password so that no one can use your saved passwords without knowing the Master Password. You may need to exit Firefox in order for Firefox to ask for that again.
