Autosave documents in pages

After using Pages for about a year, and generally liking it, I lost a day's worth of work when my battery died. I opened Pages and searched all the menus for the Auto Restore function before it dawned on me that Pages cannot automatically save your document for you while you're editing it. I just assumed that such a basic function was provided in all modern text editing software. Incredible. Now I guess I'll have to go back to MS Word. Why should I have to remember to periodically manually save my doc, isn't the software supposed to do that for me?

It seems that you didn't understand.
I receive in my mailbox documents sent by users asking me to try to recover the embedded content.
In my own use I never got a corrupted document but, contrarily to what you often wrote, when I receive a corrupted file, I don't state: the user made something wrong.
I assume that something failed.
I know a way to get documents without Index.xml file. But when I receive such ones, I always ask the owner if the doc was stored on a server where it may be used by several machines. Every time the response is: no, it was on a single user system.
Most often, a document corrupted by a power shortage is not readable with current tools like TextEdit or TextWrangler. The operating system is fooled by the wrong descriptor available in its HD's table of contents.
With iWork, I never got such files.
The corrupted files, at least those which I received, are always readable with standard tools, at least with Hexadecimal editors.
When the Index.xml file is available, I may decipher it and rebuild the entire document but Pages is unable to do the same, simply because, somewhere among the thousands of instructions, there is one which it is unable to decipher.
My guess is that there is a bug pushing the code to write a wrong instruction.
I would not be surprised if it is linked to the most common oddity: an instruction which doesn't manipulate correctly a carry when the treated data cross a page boundary.
I guess that because sometimes I was said that the document was killed after the addition (or the removal) of a single character.
The number of corrupted files received exploded after the introduction of iWork '09. And most often these corrupted documents are flatfiles. Maybe there is a bug in the code compacting the package built at first.
This is why I don't use flatfiles.
As I already explained, iWork builds a package then,
(1) if the doc must remain a package, the index.xml file is packed (gzipped) as Index.xml.gz
(2) if the doc must be a flatFile, the package (with its non packed index) is packed with a tool which is not one of those which I am aware of. Zip, Gzip, Ditto are unable to pack in a format accepted by iWork.

  • Hi, I would like to know how can I recover a document from pages that I didn't save anytime and instead of clicking the button save I clicked the delete button at the end. Is there any way to recover it?

Hi, I would like to know how can I recover a document from pages that I didn't save anytime and instead of saving the doc I clicked the delete button. Is there any way to recover it?

Regardless of application, the first step that I take is to save and name the current document — even if it has no content yet. With Pages, this good habit enables autosave. As you add content, your document revision history is restorable via the File Revert To menu. The delete key has the same document foreboding as only teaching a pet raven to speak "Nevermore."

  • Saving a document in Pages

I purchased and installed Pages, Keynote and Numbers on my iPad yesterday. I created a document in Pages and have spent the past 30 frustrating minutes trying to figure out how to save without success.
    Can anyone help me please????
    Pierre

I am another one of those that have had my epiphany and invested in an iMac and am having some issues getting my head around it all. Having been a Word user since 1989 I have opted to give Pages a tryout.
So if I get this thread correct, the only way to save is to exit/ Crikey what happens if you have a crash or it hangs - and yes mine has been on my desk less than 12 hours and it has hung twice already - or at least I get that twirly circle that will only go away by turning the machine off. Surely it is not beyond the ken to be able to save progressively or have an autosave? Or are you all chuckling at the frustrations of a newbie. But it sure is frustrating. Thank gooodness I still have my Acer in the other room.

  • I created a document in Pages on my ipad and now it won't open up. How can I fix this?

I created a document on my Ipad and when I finished it, I closed Pages. When I went to re-open Pages and see the document it wouldn't open. I click on the document and it shows the processing symbol but then the entire program closes. All of the other documents within pages open up fine, just not this one. Any help?

Try resetting your iPad.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for 7 or 8 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
I'm assuming your default is to save Pages documents to iCloud, and that you had a good WiFi connection when you closed Pages the last time you tried to save the document.

  • I can't save my open documents in Pages.

I have 2 untitled documents in pages open. I have the animated progress bar spinning and spinning. - I have tried to reinstall Pages but that dosn't cut it. What to do ?? Please help.

    Hey fruhulda,
I have a similar problem although I'm running OSX 10.9.5.  I'v just started to completely remove pages and attempt a reinstall.  I did the search for the plist file.  There was only one file with the com.apple.iwork.pages name but it did not have the .plist extension, even when I checked the info page.  Is this the same file?
I'm not sure I want to update to Yosemite yet, but it looks like I may have to in order to continue to work with my pages documents, unless the reinstall works.

  • Hyperlink to Documents in Pages 2.0?

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

I sent feedback to Apple about this tonight. It would be easy, but the path in the inspector automatically inserts http://. It seems trivial for them to take that away, and let you insert paths to files instead of webpages.
Let's hope we see this in an update!

THis is safe for Mac's? Sorry, I have just never heard of this site before.
And there are literally tens of thousands of sites of which I've not heard, too. Not this one.
It's legit. There are lots of links in Apple Support Communities to the LibreOffice web site, as well as others that are legitimate open-source developers of options to buying MS Office, such as NeoOffice and OpenOffice. I have Open Office installed on one of my older Macs that can't run Office 2011 and it is rock-solid.
I've been here too long to start posting bogus urls now.

  • Open Pages '08 Document with Pages

A client recently emailed me a Pages '08 document and I can't open it with my copy of regular old Pages.
What? I can't open a Pages '08 document with Pages 2.02? Serious? That's just messed up. I mean, I should at least be able to view the document.
And it's not that I don't want to upgrade. I just haven't gotten around to it because Pages works well for me.
    Meh.

    the macaficionado,
In order to avoid "threadjacking", you should be asking this question in a new posting. Having said that, you can be helped by this link, especially the recommendation of Walt K in that thread:

On Lion 10.7.x you need to hold the CMD+r Keys insyead of notting from an Instsall Disc, but try that & step 3 onward...
    "Try Disk Utility
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • How do I set a default page size, orientation, and printer for a particular document in Pages?

I have a simple label document in Pages which I print to my label printer. The label is 1.49 x 3.47 inches and needs to print in Landscape, and it needs to print to my Dymo label printer. How do I set up the Page Setup or Print Setup so it defaults to this document size, orientation, and printer, every time, without me having to manually enter those settings every time?

Thank you for your reply. However, I could not get Templates to work correctly for me.  Following your instructions, I opened my document, opened Page Setup, set the printer, paper size, orientation, and printed a copy to make sure it was right. Then I re-opened Page Setup to verify that the settings were still correct. Then I saved the document as a Template. Then I found my template in Pages, opened the template, and tried to print. The first thing I noticed was that the template did not remember my printer. Then I set the printer, and printed, but I found that the template also did not remember the page size or the document orientation. So, did I miss a step here? Lion 10.7.5 and Mac Mini.

  • How can I paste a pdf of a Publisher document into Pages so I can edit?

I have been asked to print a document that was created in Publisher on a PC. I have been sent a pdf of the document, which is A4, printed both sides, with four A6 text boxes on each side, with the same artwork and text in each box. The trouble is, the layout is wrong so when it is cut into four the margins are not even. I have Acrobat 7.0 Standard (which is know is very old) but I haven't used it much and can't work out how to edit the pdf. At the moment all I can do is copy and paste the entire document into Pages but then I can't extract just one A6 text box from the rest. If I could do that it would be a breeze to set it up correctly in Pages so that it works when cut into four A6 pieces. When I go to Get Info it says it is not locked and I have permission to read and write.
Can anyone explain these things to a beginner, please?
    Thanks!

    Chris
There are several ways we can go about this.
*1. In Adobe Illustrator* you can open the pdf file directly and chop out the bits you don't want and resave them individually. There maybe problems with fonts not being embedded as it comes from a PC where such things are mostly verbotten.
*2. In Acrobat* you can do some editing and avoid the fonts issue. But the procedure is a bit more involved.
If it helps, you need 2 things:
    +Menu > Tools > Advanced Editing > Select Object Tool+ and
    +Menu > Split Document… / Crop Pages…+
Using this you can unpick the pdf file removing the parts you don't want. Not as simple as it sounds because you need to understand why some objects select with others and why some are unselectable which has to do with grouping, masking and compounding.
*3. In Preview* cut apart the multiple pages and parts of each page. To split the multiple pages you will have to open the set and then delete the pages you don't want and save the remaining page with a new name.
To delete a page click on it in the sidebar and hit delete.
To crop a page use the +Select Tool+ in the top of the window and drag around the part of the page you want then +Menu > Tools > Crop+ and resave with a new name. Be aware this does not actually get rid of anything outside the select it just crops the view of it.
*4. Which brings us to Pages*. Having divided the pdf into individual page files you can then drag them into Shapes on your page the size of the parts you want to show.
When you click on the shape with page in it a little bar shows up underneath with +Edit Mask+. Click on the +Edit Mask+. You will see the shape, which is the mask, gets a grey dotted outline with white resizing boxes on the corners and mid points. If you need to adjust the crop or size of the shape drag on these.
Behind the shape outline is the image with the cropped parts outside shown greyed out. The greyed out part is the hidden part. If you click outside the shape but on the greyed out part of the image you select the image itself and can pull at its corners or sides to change its shape. Or if you just click on the greyed part of the image you can move it around so that it moves relative to the shape cropping it.
If you have several sections to be shown in each shape, you can move them one at a time to show each one. Say you have 4: 2 top and 2 bottom, option drag the shape with the picture in it to make 4 copies. Then in each one pull the image to reveal in turn top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right.
Do this till you have all the parts separated and rearrange them where you want.
*A bonus tip:* Cut out a step by opening Preview, next to Pages, with the multiple pages showing in the sidebar. You can drag the pages from the sidebar directly into the shape in Pages, without having to divide the .pdf.
    Any further questions just ask.
