Available Storage

Why does my 16gb mini only have12 GB of available storage?

Part of the reason has to do with the fact that the iOS and default apps take up some space. Another part of the reason has to do with how space is measured on hard drives and solid state devices. Check any hard drive and you will see the actual space available is less that the stated size of the drive.

iPod touch 4 gives message "Cannot Download" "there is not enough available storage to download...You can manage your storage in settings." when trying to update or install one of the apps, but not other apps.  I have more space available than needed for the app.  What do I need to do to fix this problem?  Do I need to completely reset this device as new and, if so, how should I do that?

You need to delete some item (apps, music, photos etc) from the iPod,.However, sometime files get corrupt. To determine that connect the iPod to your computer and click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes. How much storage is used by the "other" category. If over 1 1/2 GB that indicates corrupted files.
To get the "other" down to normal value you need to restore your iPod usually restoring from backup works but sometimes restoring to factory settings.new iPod is required./

  • IBooks books "Cannot Download" because "there is not enough available storage to download _______."

Before I begin, here are the details of my particular iPad:
    Build Version: 10B329
    iOS 6.1.3
16 BG iPad 2 (although it says that the capacity is 13.84 GB)
It has never been damaged nor has it experienced any water damage. It runs very well.
My issue: I am trying to download the ibook entitled Algebra 1 (Common Core Edition by Pearson) from the iBook Store. The ibook itself is only 2.46 GB large. After purchasing and upon downloading, however, I run into an issue. The book cover is placed on my iBooks bookshelf with the "New" ribbon on the upper-right. It then begins to download and, shortly after, I receive the following error message:
    Cannot Download
There is not enough available storage to download "Algebra 1". You can manage your storage in Settings.
    - Cancel
    - Settings
Having had issues with iBooks in the past, I thought this was just another glitch. But, in order to rule out any uncertainty, I checked my storage capacity anyways. On my first download, I am positive I had enough space on my iPad (although I can't remember how much). I had recently freed up my iPad by deleting videos and other apps. After doing all of that, I tapped the cover of the ibook again to initiate the downloading process. With more room, I was certain it would work, but then I received the same error message.
After that, I attempted to redownload the ibook after having tried each of the following techniques:
    - Turned off my iPad completely with iBooks still installed
    - Turned off my iPad completely with iBooks uninstalled, and then reinstalled it after turning the iPad back on
    - Deleting the ibook from iBooks, delete the iBooks app, completely turning off the iPad, and then redownloading everything after turning the iPad back on
    - Delete other ibooks
    - Transferring all of my bought ibooks to my iTunes on my computer (this technique actually worked for another on of my ibooks, but not for this one...)
    - Sign out of my iTunes & App Stores account and then signing back in
    - Turning ON the "Books" Automatic Downloads option
The only thing I think I haven't done is restore my iPad... Which I really do not want to do. Having to redownload all of those apps is a painstakingly long process...
Even now I have enough space to download it and it still gives me the same error message. My currect space specs are below:
    Storage
4.8 GB Available     9.1 GB Used     (Most of this is from iBooks as you can see)
    iBooks               5.7 GB
    Japanese          221 MB
    Facebook          114 MB
    Penultimate       102 MB
    etc......
    iCloud
    Total Storage     5.0 GB
    Available           5.0 GB
    etc......
I have deleted numerous apps and media on my iPad to make more room. I have read on other Apple Support threads that iDevices need space in order to move files around and such. I think 4.8 GB should be enough for this! Especially for an ibook that's only 2.46 GB large!!! This is really frustrating and I really need this ibook!!!! If someone could give me some other tips and tricks, that would be great. I really don't want to have to restore my iPad though... If it comes down to that, I guess I have no choice.
Another detail I left out is a popup window that comes up just before the error message that reads:
    Downloading Item
When this item is finished downloading, it will be available in your library.
    - OK
I'm not sure it's related to the issue, but I decided to put it out there anyway so that this problem can be as detailed as possible.
Thanks for all of the support!

I have the same problem.  I got an error when downloading an iBook to my iPad, and now it shows up as "gray" in my book list. I'm running iOS 7.1.1 with iBooks version 3.2.
Actually, you don't have the same problem at all. The OP had excessive "Other" taking up space, leaving no space to download additional books.
You seem to be having a problem with a specific file. If I were you, I'd start my own thread with a subject line that describes your issue. You're going to get better answers that way than by piggybacking on an old thread.
Yes, you should still be able to load iBooks by syncing with iTunes. There may be a problem with the file itself. Are you able to add other books? If so, contact the iTunes Store to see if they can help you with this particular book.
    Best of luck.

  • TS1702 When I try to reload The Sims FreePlay (sister deleted accidentally) from Apps Store I keep getting an error message "There is not enough avaiable storage to download "The Sims FreePlay". I check my settings and I do have enough available storage.

When i try to reload The Sims FreePlay (sister accidentally deleted) from App Store I keep getting error message. There is not enough available storage on my device but there actually is enought storage. Not sure why I cannot get App to reload. I have synced to my computer. Help!

To download/install an app directly to the iPod you need available storage equal to about three times the file download size. Syncing the app to the iPod requires a lot less. Thus you either have to free up more storage or sync the app from your computer.

I'm trying to update my iPad but it says I don't have enough available storage. But I have more than enough can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Well, we can't as we don't know what you consider as "more than enough". The built is quite heavy (like it can be 800mb) then it needs to be extracted to be installed before everything unneeded gets deleted...

  • Why can't I download IOS6 update. I have more than the required 2.5 GB of available storage on my Iphone4 .

    Why can't I download IOS6 updateon my  Iphone4. I have more than required 2.5GB storage available ?

There is a box under the IOS 6 software update. The box says "download and Install" but I can't highlight the box to activate it. Under that there is a sentence that says "update requires at least 2.5 GB of available storage. I have 9.6 available.

  • New drives not appearing in available storage

    Hi,
I purchased an ix4-300d NAS unit. I initially installed two 2TB drives and created my backups on it. I recently purchased two additional 2TB drives and installed them. My available storage has not increased. It is still showing only the first two drives in Disk Management. Yet Disk Management is showing Total Drive Size as 7.28 but only 1.8TB available capacity. How do I get it to recognize the two additional drives? In settings there is a option to add drives but then I would have to remove all the data before I did it. Really? I already have 583GB of backup data on the two drives.
That is alot to backup. Is there any other way?

    Hi ddskid,
It depends on your RAID configuration, but typically when adding drives to a RAID array it will ask to overwrite the data. You will need to add the drives to the array to allocate the space or perform a factory reset on the device from the web interface.

Well, if you don't have enough space, then there's nothing wrong, right?
You can check available space under Settings> General> About or by plugging it into iTunes and looking at the color-coded bar.

No, unless you choose to buy an iPad with more capacity.

  • HT4623 how do you do a software update for iphone 4s when it says the update requires 2.5 gb of available storage?

how to update iphone 4s when it says needs 2.5 gb of available storage?

Go to Settings>General>Usage and see how much space is available on your phone (listed at the very top).  The pop-up might be telling you that you don't have enough space on your phone to perform the backup, not that you don't have enough space in your iCloud acount to store the backup.

    Hello,
I am monitoring a cluster of 2 nodes with SCOM 2012.

  • "Cannot Download - There is not enough available storage space."

When attempting to update apps, I receive an error message
"Cannot Download - There is not enough available storage space."
When I Go to settings, there is 10.6 GB available
    What is the deal?
    Thanks in advance

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • TS3992 I have been getting this message: "This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available." However, the phone says that I still have 1.1 GB of available storage. Any suggestions?

I have been getting this message: "This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available." However, the phone says that I still have 1.1 GB of available storage. Any suggestions?

    Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
After that: go to Settings - iCloud - Storage and backup - turn off the iCloud backup
and backup with iTunes from now on
