Away messages, help!

hello.. i need some help in iChat.. when you make a custom away message, how can you change the font in it. to windows users and also ichat users (i think also ichat users), my away message appears as times new roman 12, and i would like it to be verdana 10.

Hi Tyler,
You can not change the Font for Away (Status) messages.
It is actually Helvetica at 12 point.
The Buddy list names are in Lucida Grande (14)

Delete previous away messages help

Over the year ive accumulated 100s of away messages. is there any way i can get rid of all of the saved ones and start fresh. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Hi Fotoshopfan,
When you use the drop down to create a new Away or Available (custom) message they are saved as you say.
AT the bottom of this drop down is Edit Messages.
Use this.
Use the " - " key to delete messages after you have selected them first.
There is another way but it is more drastic.
Go to Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat.
This will also lose you any speech Alerts you have made, Font Colour Choices, Bubble colour choices and any Sound/Alert choice you have made. (hence the Drastic nature of this method)

How do you set an away message in mac mail?

I am trying to set an away message that will automatically send a response to any incoming emails. I am using OSX Version 10.8.5. All of the discussions seem to be old and none of them are relevant - there is no gear to click on when I go to mail on icloud. Can someone please help?

You could set a rule in Mail to do this but that's not usually a very effective way to send an out-of-office message since it would require that your computer be on and logged in with Mail running, far too vulnerable for most people. It's better to set up an out-of-office message in your email account on your provider's server. Most email providers offer such a feature. If you're using iCloud mail, click the "gear" icon at the very lower-left corner of your screen when you're in the Mail section, click the "vacation" item in the toolbar, and add your message as appropriate.

Formatting outgoing and away messages

I use iChat 2.1 and was wondering if there was any way to add formatting to away messages (do your normal formatting preferences apply?) and how to add line breaks to away and normal messages (for lists, poetry and song lyrics). I don't understand how to do this as everytime you press return the message sends and does not add another line. Any help would be appreciated! Thnaks!

Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages
You can add a line break by using the ALT key (second key away from the space bar) and enter together.
To change font in mid post, use the Format menu and then Fonts.
You can also change the Font colour here as well.
I tested this in iChat 3 but it should work in iChat 2.x

GAIM and "away messages" -- not working?

Hi there,
Is it just me or do "away messages" in GAIM just not work at all? I set my status to "away", I selected an away message, I get this funny pop-up that tells me to either edit the message or hit the "I'm Back!" button ... but no-body actually receives the message if they contact me while I'm away.
Am I missing something here?

Well, I tried that, and that's the way I found out it didn't work for me--apart from the about 12 open conversations mostly going "wtf why don't you answer me!!!" after I went to have a bath this evening. I don't get the away message when I'm hovering over my name in the contacts listing, and none of my friends receives anything like an "auto-reply" or a pop-up or something when they approach me while I have the away message set up.
What are your settings in Preferences -> Away/Idle? Perhaps something's wrong there, on my end.
Or is there perhaps an "auto-reply" plugin for gaim which sends a message as soon as somebody pings me while I'm away?
Help is much appreciated. I don't really like to log on and off all the time just because I'm on the phone ...

Away Messages

For some reason when I message people I know are away, like I'll message my girlfriend something so when she gets back from class she sees it, her away message doesn't pop up. Its used to but all the sudden it just stopped, not sure why, and for some reason I miss it.
If anyone could help with this odd pet-peeve that would be great, thanks a lot.

There is a setting in iChat as to whether it will Auto-reply with the Away message.
In iChat 4 it is in the General Preferences
It is in the same Pane in iChat 3
It is an active choice to select it and is Not On by default.
It may be due to how she has updated to Leopard and not kept previous Settings. (A fresh Install will do this).
It maybe that she has turned it Off.
There is also a secondary setting in the General Preferences that may also be effecting this.
In the first picture it is the line the Blue Arrow points to and is the top line in the iChat 3 picture.
If this is not Set you do not Log Out of AIM. It will display the last Status that was Set so if she was set to Away before she Quit of shut down her Mac then she will appear to be On-line but obviously iChat will not be able to Respond.
It will then depend if she is allowing Off-Line Messaging Which can be turned Off with a reply to the AIM server in the text Message they send at the same time. Or turned On again by visiting the AIM site and logging in to your Account/Screen name there and resetting it.

How do I prolong reading my buddies away messages?

When I am placing my cursor over my buddies who are "away" on my buddy list, a yellowish window will pop up containing their away message, but only for a couple seconds... which was not often long enough for me to read their whole away message before it disappears (when very long). It gets very annoying to reapply the cursor on buddy's name and wait till the "away" window appears, periodicaly. Is there another way to read their away message or to change the time length that the away message appears for? Help would be appreciated.

Tooltips will only stay up for ~10 seconds. I'm afraid not. iChat itself has a character limit for away messages. If you're setting an away message from within iChat it will only display the first 44 characters, which should be readable in that short a time

Keeping away message on for a long time

ok so im a student and i want my away message to say school. So i make it that, put my laptop in its charger and turn the contrast all the way down (for privacy). However, my away message only stays on for a short time (i have no idea how long) before the automatic logout shuts it down. Is there any way to disable that function? i also want this for whne i go on vacation which is longer periods of about a week. any ideas

Hi Ken:
Your status is changing when your mac goes into sleep mode. It is actually logging you out of iChat/AIM.
The only way to prevent this is to not allow your mac to go to sleep, which can be adjusted via: System Pref>Energy Saver>Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for: NEVER

Away Message Virus?

All of a sudden, every away message on my buddy list is a link to some singer's myspace account. What's the deal? Do I have a virus? My roommate with a PC doesn't see any of the links that I see.

Problem with iChat changing my custom away message after 30 minutes

Lately, I've been having a big problem with iChat changing any custom away message that I put up to "Away" after 30 minutes or so. Is there anything I can do to make it stop? Another issue I'm having is that sometimes when people on my buddy list change their away message, it doesn't show up on iChat unless I go offline and then sign back on. Any idea why it's doing that, and what I can do to get it to stop?

Go to the General Section of iChat Preferences.
Does it say you are set to Go to Away when you log off/QUit iChat ?
is the computer going to Sleep at this point ?

Finding my Custom Away Message

I've searched through the posts already on here, and they don't lead me to where I need to be. I'm looking to switch computers as I graduate, and want to take my (quite extensive) collection of custom away messages from iChat 3.1.4.
I've looked in Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist, and they aren't stored in there. I have installed Chax to extend iChat's basic functionality, but its preference file doesn't contain the custom away messages, either. I've searched through all the other iChat ".plist" files, including the Agent, Menu Extras, etc. Anybody have an idea where these away messages are stored?

I've looked in Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist, and
they aren't stored in there.
This is where they are stored by iChat. Look under CustomAwayMessages and you'll see the away messages if you have the "Remember Custom Messages" checked under "Edit Status Menu" in iChat.
It can take a few minutes for this plist file to update.

Gaim away message issue

Hello everyone. I've been dealing with a strange issue for awhile, I've got a ZOOM ADSL modem and Verizon as my ISP. Using gaim, whenever I put up an away message I get knocked offline. The weird part being that I can still talk to everyone, I'm just shown as offline on everyone's buddy list (not my own) and I can still talk to them, it's rather strange and frustrating. Anyone have any ideas?

I have added new messages in both Available and Away with no problems

I had the same problem when I installed Firefox 3, but I think the problem is due to my recent hard drive upgrade. Try changing the download location from "Desktop" in Microsoft Internet Explorer and all other browsers (Safari, Firefox, etc.) to whatever default location you prefer. I never use Internet Explorer, but I think somehow my settings were corrupted when I upgraded my hard drive. I found this solution on another site also.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
