Backlight Going Off, Need Suggestions

Here's the story:
I have a early 2009 Macbook (actually it's my wife's). Suddenly the screen backlight has started turning off. If I reset the SMC I can usually get the backlight to come back on for a short time, but it is not permanent. I took it in to the genius bar (where they told me about the SMC reset procedure), but they couldn't tell me what was wrong. They suggested some possibilities such as Inverter, inverter cable or screen and wanted ~ $300 to fix. I hate to send it in and pay a fortune for a repair when it may only be just the cable or inverter. I'm also concerned that if none of those things fix it that I wasted $300. I am tech savvy and am a PC guy (sorry Apple), and can do a repair myself if needed. If it doesn't pay to try and fix, I'll buy my wife a macbook pro and try to sell the macbook for parts (or use it connected to an external monitor). If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations about what I should do I would be very appreciative.

Sorry to hear about your logic board. This Macbook also has a problem with the logic board (no audio unless using headphones) that I am not going to fix. I like a challenge, so I ordered a new LCD. If that doesn't fix the problem then I'll either use it attached to a TV as an HTPC or I'll sell it for parts. I thought Macs were supposed to be reliable. This one has caused me nothing but problems since a year after we bought it. It's an early 2009 Core 2 Duo, so it's not that old. I have $300 Win PC laptops that are less of a problem. Oh well, the wife gets what she wants . Good luck with your laptop.

  • When I shut my lid the backlight goes off like it is supposed to, but comes back on after a while. It never used to do this, how can I fix it?

This problem is a recent one (only has happened in the past 2-3 weeks). When I shut the lid it used to immediately sleep (the power light began to do its fade in and out, and the backlight turned off), but now when I close the lid, the power light stays on, the backlight goes off for a few seconds before coming on again (not sleeping properly?). Then the backlight will turn itself off again and the computer sleeps like it is supposed to. Is something wrong here and how can I fix it?
    Thanks

I think its the same in 10.5 as in 10.6 (the example below). Do System Preferences > Keyboard. Looks like this:
UNCHECK the box that reads, "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys," or hold the Fn key to use F11 and F12 for volume control. It looks like you have to own an Apple aluminum keyboard to get a function key on a desktop computer.

Backlight goes off in few seconds if someone calling, Backlight goes off in few seconds if someone calling

Hi, my problem is when I am getting a incoming call ( not answered yet) at that time the number which is flashing on my screen , the backlight goes off in few seconds instead of getting dimmed. I've to press the home button to see the number again & in the case of outgoing call the backlight gets dimmed if the other person is not picking & the iPhone is in my hand.

  • MacBook backlight goes off when lid partially closed

My 2yr old MacBook backlight has started turning off when the screen is partially closed. It works fine if the screen is open beyond a certain angle (about 90 degrees), but turns off when the screen is closed beyond that angle. Comparing to another MacBook (newer system): the backlight stays on until the screen/lid is just about closed.
It's definitely the backlight (the logo goes off as well), not the system suspending.
I'm worried this may be an early sign of a general failure.
It's well out of warranty -- any ideas what part should I look at replacing?

I have the mid 2009 MBP - is there a magnet inside the unibody aluminum housing? The lid latch below the track pad is smooth and seems to have some magnetic attraction to the lid itself.
    S.U. -
My problem is that the screen does not go off when the lid is closed. The problems described with the SMC reset involve the screen backlight not turning on. It also says to not reset the SMC unnecessarily. WIll that reset affect anything else?
Tried the paper clip - no joy. Will check with a magnet at work.
Is there a time setting for sleep mode on close?

  • CQ56 Backlight goes off intermittently

Laptop backlight switches off (display is there but completely black - can be read faintly using a torch) randomly from seconds to a max 1.5 hours after a reboot. Haven't found any way to get it back on other than a reboot, which doesn't always work first time.
    I have:
    - restored the system back to before the problem started
    - rolled back the BIOS version
    - Changed out the complete screen and cable back to motherboard socket with a known good one
    - Changed the power settings to always on
    No change to behaviour.
I am suspecting GPU failure as I assume that the backlight power supply comes from the GPU, but any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

    HI @peterjammo
    Thank you for your inquiry.
I understand that that your display went very dim almost completely black but could be read faintly.
You have tried installing a different display, rolling back the bios and changing the power setting but there was no change.
Here is a link to Troubleshooting a dim display (Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista) that may help.

  • Backlight goes off... but only on higher brightness. What does this mean?

I have an early 2008 13" macbook and all of a sudden, the backlight went off. I can still see the screen using a flashlight. I tried resetting the PRAM and holding the power button for 5-10 seconds with battery out and power cable unplugged. Nothing. I figured out that bringing the brightness down all the way and then back up a notch turns it back on. But unless I keep the brightness at 1-4 notches, the light goes off after 10-30 seconds. At this point, I have no idea what to do.

Have you tried resetting the SMC as well as the PRAM? Here is the link...

  • Backlight Goes Off after Grey Bootup Screen

Hey guys, Im having a problem where my backlight goes out as soon as it gets past the grey bootup screen. I just got this laptop used, and it had windows xp installed and seemed to work fine.
When I ran the snow leopard installation, the backlight originally went out, and I had to go through the installation without a backlight, hoping that it would stop after I finished. But now snow leopard is installed and its still doing the same thing. Any suggestions? Ive already tried PRAM and SMC resets

just brighten up you screen using the button that looks like it has a sun on it, if your computer is an older version and you don't have that button, go under settings and that should fix your problem

  • Backlight goes off and on while moving lid.

I check around in the discussions and didn't really find anything that helped me.
Occasionally (more so lately) when I go to open or close the lid, or adjust it for better viewing, the backlight will shut off until I move the screen again. I'm unfortunately in a position when I can not afford to bring it to a Genius Bar, so I'd have to make any repair on my own.
Does anyone know what could be causing this issue, maybe a loose connection under "the hood". Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Seems like the backlight cable might have had it or is loose. If it is still covered under warranty, I wouldn't recommend doing any repairs myself but seeing as though you HAVE to, its really easy to open and examine these things. The front bezel comes of quite easily and removing the LCD once the bezel is off will reveal the backlight cables. The wires should be pink and white and relatively thick. Just play around with the cables and see if there is any wear on the insulation that might cause a short or a possible loose connection.

  • Trouble playing music when backlight goes off.

I have a really strange problem with my iPod that started sometime last week. I discovered that it started have difficulty playing music, as if it was a scratched CD. I figured out later that this problem is alleviated by keeping the backlight constantly on, but this of course drains my iPod battery very quickly, even at 0%. Does anyone know what my iPod is doing, and can it be solved?

Just tried it and now it works. Of course it's the simplest answer. =)
    Thank you!

  • X31 backlight turns off annoyingly after a few seconds

Weird problem with my x31.  Normally, everything is...well...normal.
But every once in a while, the LCD backlight will turn off after 3-10 seconds of keyboard/mouse inactivity.  As long as I keep typing, the light will stay on.  But if I pause to think, the backlight goes off and the only way to bring it back on is to hit F3 to "darken the screen" and then move the mouse around or hit a key.
It's like there's some sort of extreme power saving mode going on in the system.
It happens even at the boot screen or the BIOS editor...so this is some bit of hardware that has gotten confused.  After a couple of hours, it goes away...but the system isn't much use when it's happening.
When the backlight is off, the LCD is still painting a picture -- I just need to shoot a powerful flashlight at the screen and all the pixels are being properly controlled.  There's just no illumination.
Ideas?  Is there some sort of software diagnostic that would knock some sense back into the backlight controller?

No, the backlight is the color it should be.
I turned off the power-saving mode for "auto-dim" -- but that is calibrated in minutes, and this is happening in seconds (not only that, but its erratic...sometimes 1 second, sometimes 10).
Just for fun I downloaded the latest version of the Power Management stuff (which was just updated a week ago) and ran a whole series of PCDoctor diagnostics on the hardware.  Problem is gone for now...we'll see if that actually was the solution.

  • MBP keyboard backlight turns off when itunes changes songs

Anyone else encountered this? I turned off all of my iTunes related plug-ins and add-ons and it still happens. Whenever the song changes or I play/pause iTunes, my backlight goes off. Is this a 'feature'?

That sounds rather odd. I always have Itunes on and it never happened to me, are you sure that it is not some weird coincidence? Is it only happening when you have iTunes on??

    Hi-
Try switching the power adapters to see if the problem moves to the other display.
Of course, reconnecting/double checking all connections is a good idea.
Other than that, any references in Console/Logs regarding graphics driver errors?

    likely display inverter board.
did you get your inverter board replaced already?
    Did you have a question?
If the diagnostic in shop indicates same, thats 1000X better than anyone can do online in "diagnosis" (not really genuine diagnosis of course)

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
