Backup vs redo log files

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what's the real difference between a backup file and a redo log file/archived redo log file and the scenarios (examples) when each of them can be used (for example, "......") ? Both are used for database/instance recovery. I have read the concepts of there 2 terms, but I need some additional information about the difference.
Thanks!

What i still don't understand is how redo mechanism works; I know, redo logs records changes made to the database and it's used to re-do informations in case of a system failure/crash, for example. Ok, let's say I have a huge update, but when the system crash has occured, the transaction is neither comitted, nor rolled back. Then, how this redo is useful? If a system crash occur, all those updates aren't rolled back automatically? So the database state is as before executing that huge update? So in this case, 'what to redo'?No, with the system's crash, the transaction never gets a chance to get committed (and even rolled back) because a commit is only supposed to happen if there is an explicit or implicit commit statement is issued. Now, for the redo , with the statement, a commit marker is entered at the end of the redo stream of that transaction denoting that it's finally over now and for the corresponding transaction, the status is cleared from the transaction table that's stored in the Undo segment in which the Undo information of that transaction is stored. If you have given a huge update, the redo would be very highly required as you should be knowing that it's not all the time that the dirty buffers that are written to the data files unlikely the redo log files which are written every 3 econds. This means, there is a very fair chance that many changes have yet not even propagated to the data files for which the change vectors are now already there in the redo log files. Now, for the sake of clarity, assume that this transaction was actually committed! So now, without those changes be applied to the data files how Oracle can actually show the committed reults when the database next time would be opened? For this purpose, the redo change vectors are required. And for the uncommitted transactions , the applcation of the redo change vectors would keep on updating the Checkpoint numbers of the data files and would eventually get them synched with the control file and redo log files, without which the database would never be opened.

  • Backup of redo log files

    Hello,
    How can I make a backup with redo log files using the following parameters?
    backup_type = online_cons
    backup_dev_type =  disk_copy
    -->archive_function = save_delete (It could be changed. Maybe it is the source of the error)
    The copy is made, but an error occurs when it tries to copy the redo log files. The log shows the following message:

    Hi Ricard,
    You are right, you need to change the entry
    archive_function = save_delete
    to
    archive_function = save
    in init<SID>.sap

  • Backup online redo log files

    Hi All
    Can you please explain for me the main reason that we do not have to backup the online redo log using RMAN ?
    Thanks

    The online redo logfiles are necessary to perform a complete recovery of the database. During database recovery, Oracle will apply the archived redo logfiles and online redo logfiles to roll the database forward and finally remove uncommitted transactions. If any of the online redo logfile group is active and missing, the database recovery will be incomplete and the database needs to be opened with restlogs, causing a new database incarnation.
    You have to shutdown the datrabase to be able to perform a backup of the online redo logfiles, or find another method to create a time based snapshot of the data to prevent data movement while the redo logfiles are in use in order to keep datafile headers, controlfile and redo logfiles in sync. It is for that reason that you multiplex and mirror redo logfiles.

  • BRARCHIVE backup for high volume offline redo log files on Standby Database

    Hi All,
    We are through with all of Standby database activity, also started applying the offline redo log files on the Standby site.
    The throughput is not utilizing the actual available bandwith.
    So we are not able to copy the offline redo files on time, as the offline redo files are piling up on the Production side.
    My query is how we can parallely copy the offline redo log files on the DR site (ie. 4-5 redo files at a time).
    Kindly guide for the same.

    hi,
    I have one doubt.
    On other server (r3qas) the Umask settings are as followed
    User     UMASK value
    <sid>adm          077
    ora<SID>           077
    root                   077
    Running SAP System :   SAP R3 4.6C
    Running DBMS          :  Oracle 9.0
    Operating System      :- HP_UX
    On this system The new offline redo log files are created with 600 permissions. There is not a problem here, while taking the backup. I checked last "r3qas-archive" backups. There, i have not found any single error related to permissions, or any others (something like, Cannot open /oracle/RQ1/../.........dbf).
    If everything is working fine, with this umask setting on this server, then, what's going wrong with the BW Quality server, which have the same umask settings (also others) for all the concerned users, as mentioned above.

  • How to disable write to redo log file in oracle7.3.4

    how to do this in oracle 7.3.4?

    Thanks very much for your help guys. I appreciate it. unfortunately none of these commands worked for me. I kept getting error on clearing logs that redo log is needed to perform recovery so it can't be cleared. So I ended up restoring from earlier snapshot of my db volume. Database is now open.
    Thanks again for your input.And now, as a follow-up, at a minimum you should make sure that all redo log groups have at least 3 members. Then, if you lose a single redo log file, all you have to do is shutdown the db and copy one of the good members (of the same group as the lost member) over the lost member.
    And as an additional follow-up, if you value your data you will run in archivelog mode and take regular backups of the database and archivelogs. If you fail to do this you are saying that your data is not worth saving.

  • Restore in noarchivelog mode ( redo log files have been dropped )

    1, A full backup taken using RMAN is available on disk.
    2, The current control files were NOT damaged and do not need to be restored.
    3, All data files are damaged .
    4, The database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
    I restore database :
    1. RMAN> STARTUP MOUNT
    2. RMAN> RESTORE DATABASE;
    3. RMAN> recover database;
    in this step , I got the information about needing redo log files ; but the redo log
    files have been dropped , what should i do ?
    else
    I want to know there is the command 'recover database using backup control file'
    in rman or not ?
    Tks

    Possibly loss of data (because information in online redo logs is lost):
    recover database until cancel;
    (cancel immediately)
    alter database open resetlogs; (to build a new set of redo logs)
    It's not necessary to use a backup controlfile here.

  • Hoping for a quick response : EXP and Archived REDO log files

    I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered 100 times. I admit I didn't search, I don't have time. I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow, and I need to know if I'm correct about something to do with backup / restore.
    we have 10g R2 running a single instance on a single server. The application vendor has "embedded" oracle with their application. The vendor's backup is a batch file using EXP - thus:
    exp system/xpwdxx@db full=y file=D:\Orant\admin\db\EXP\db_full.dmp log=D:\Orant\admin\db\EXP\db_full.txt direct=y compress=y
    This command is executed nightly at midnight. The files are then backed up by our nightly backup to offsite storage media.
    Te database is running in autoarchive mode. The problem is, the archived redo files filled the drive they were being stored on, and it is the drive the database is on. I used OS commands to move 136G of archived redo logs onto other storage media to free the drive.
    My question: Since the EXP runs at midnight, when there is likely NO activity, do I need to run in AutoArchive Mode? From what I have read, you cannot even apply archived redo log files to this type of backup strategy (IMP) Is that true? We are ok losing changes since our last EXP. I have read a lot of stuff about restoring consistent vs. inconsistent, and just need to know: If my disk fails, and I have to start with a clean install of Oracle and nothing else, can I IMP this EXP and get back up and running as of the last EXP? Or do I need the autoarchived redo log files back to July 2009 (136G of them).
    Hoping for a quick response
    Best Regards, and thanks in advance

    Bruce Davis wrote:

    Thank you for your quick reply. I am reading in the other responses that since I am using EXP without consistent=y, I might not even have a backup. The application vendor said that with this dmp file they can restore us to the most recent backup. I don't really care for this strategy as it is untested. I asked them to verify that they could restore us and they said they tested the dmp file and it was OK.
    Thank you for taking the time to reply.
    Best Regards
    BruceThe dump file is probably ok in the sense it is not corrupted and can be used in an imp operation. That doesn't mean the data in it is transactionally consistent. And to use it at all, you have to have a database up and running. If the database is physically corrupted, you'll have to rebuild a new database from scratch before you can even think about using your dmp file.
    Vendors never understand databases. I once had a vendor tell me that Oracle's performance would be intolerable if there were more than 5 concurrent connections. Well, maybe in HIS product ..... Discussions terminated quickly after he made that statement.

  • Redo log files lost in Disk Corruption/failure

    DB version:10gR2
    In one of our test databases, I have lost all members of a group due to disk corruption(it was a bad practise to store both members on the same filesystem)
    Database is still up. We don't have a backup of the lost redo log group. Altogether we had 3 redo log groups. this is what i am going to do to fix this issue.
    Step 1. Add a redo log group

    ALTER DATABASE DROP LOGFILE GROUP 2;Is this the right way to go about fixing this issue?
    The documentation says that you need to make sure a redo log group is archived before you DROP it.
    When i use the query
    SQL>SELECT GROUP#, ARCHIVED, STATUS FROM V$LOG;
        GROUP# ARC STATUS
             1 YES  ACTIVE
             2 NO  CURRENT
             3 NO  INACTIVE

    If you have a cold backup (database shutdown properly) without the redo logs, change this :
    CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOGto
    CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOGYou have to change the NORESETLOGS to RESETLOGS for Oracle to recreate the online redo logs.

  • Removing Redo Log Files? What's Normal?

    Hello,
    I'm new to Oracle and I've been using Informix for years. We currently have Oracle 9.2 running on Windows 2000 Server machine and apparently the redo log files keep filling up the disk drives they reside on. This is happening about every two weeks since we go out and delete the files when we remember.
    My question is does Oracle have a "normal" way of removing old redo logs automatically rather than having to remove them manually? In the Informix world I can set the logical logs so that they write over previously used logs once they are no longer used. Is there a similar way to configure Oracle?
    Thanks for helping out.
    Gregg Walker

    Do not delete your old log files: you need them.
    That's how Oracle does recovery when you lose a datafile or a drive. You copy over the missing stuff from your back-up and then Oracle re-applies the chnages from the REDO logs thereby bringing your database back up to date. No work lost. Result!
    Of course, if you don't take up a backup then holding on to REDO logs is pointless. In which case, set the database to run in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
    However, I strongly advise you to run in ARCHIVELOG mode. You may find this part of the administrator's guide informative: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96521/archredo.htm#4553

  • Current redo log file is lost

    Hi All,
    I got a scenario in which my current redo log file is lost:
    Do I need to:
    1)Clear log file group
    (or)
    2)I should perform incomplete recovery.
    What are the steps I should follow to recover this current redo log file?
    1)*If it is inactive* I can make use of
    ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE UNARCHIVED GROUP 2;
    which will drop and recreate the log file.To recover from loss of an active online log group in NOARCHIVELOG mode:
    If the media failure is temporary, then correct the problem so that the database can reuse the group when required.
    Restore the database from a consistent, whole database backup (datafiles and control files) as described in "Restoring Datafiles Before Performing Incomplete Recovery". For example, enter:
    % cp /disk2/backup/*.dbf $ORACLE_HOME/oradata/trgt/
    Mount the database:
    STARTUP MOUNT
    Because online redo logs are not backed up, you cannot restore them with the datafiles and control files. In order to allow the database to reset the online redo logs, you must first mimic incomplete recovery:
    RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL CANCEL
    CANCEL
    Open the database using the RESETLOGS option:
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
    Shut down the database consistently. For example, enter:
    SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
    Make a whole database backup.
    To recover from loss of an active online redo log group in ARCHIVELOG mode:
    If the media failure is temporary, then correct the problem so that the database can reuse the group when required. If the media failure is not temporary, then use the following procedure.
    Begin incomplete media recovery, recovering up through the log before the damaged log.
    Ensure that the current name of the lost redo log can be used for a newly created file. If not, then rename the members of the damaged online redo log group to a new location. For example, enter:
    ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE "?/oradata/trgt/redo01.log" TO "/tmp/redo01.log";
    ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE "?/oradata/trgt/redo01.log" TO "/tmp/redo02.log";
    Open the database using the RESETLOGS option:
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
    My question is when the redo log file is current. What steps we should follow?
    Best regards,
    Rafi.

    2)If it is active then I can make use of below steps:

    Hi Asif,
    This link I have seen by refering to previous post.I just have a slight doubt in mind.
    1)Do I need to make use of statement:
    Alter database clear unarchived log file group#;
    (or)
    Only if your group is current(or you are not able to drop it) and is not archived then you should use above query.
    We should perform incomplete recovery for this.If we have to perform incomplete recovery what are the steps I should follow?
    I doubt you should be performing incomplete recovery for this.
    Eg:Let us say my group 1 is dropped it has only one member and it is in active state.How to recover database?Can I get the steps?
    You would not be able to drop it if it is in active state, did you meant it is corrupted? If yes then you can use below query
    Alter database clear [unarchived] LOGFILE GROUP #;>
    Best regards,
    Rafi

    Make sure to backup your database after above activity.

  • Where are BLOB Files stored when using redo log files.

    I am using Archive Log Mode for my backups. I was wondering if Blob files get stored in the redo log files or if they are archived somewhere else?
    Rob.

    BLOB are just columns of some tables and are stored in related tablespace table by default in their own segments. Changes to BLOB columns are also stored in redo log more or less like any other column.
    See an short example for default LOB storage in Re: CLOB Datatype [About Space allocation]
