Bad CSS in iWeb?

I started using iWeb only recently (iWeb 3.0.2, came with iLife '11) and I am blown away with the beauty of the web pages that it can create. (Until now, I used to create web pages in a text editor.) I am also impressed that unlike some other WYSIWYG editors iWeb writes correct XHTML.
However, I have one silly problem with iWeb: according to the W3C CSS validator, it makes many errors in the CSS. In fact, iWeb's CSS does not conform to any of the four versions of the CSS standard (1, 2, 2.1 and 3).
Is there something that I am doing wrong here? Or is iWeb known to be sloppy with CSS? In the latter case, is there a workaround to ensure that the final outcome always has correct CSS? Thanks for any comments.

It didn't work, What I did this morning was:
1-Created again the empty page in Iweb called Test, Iweb saved one Test.html file and a Test_files folder.
2-Created again a css3menu file with the menu in a different local folder, it opened in firefox perfect , creating a Test.html file and a Test_files folder inside wich is the css3menu1 folder. It looks like:
3-I have a local carpet where I save the webs done by Iweb. I copy the css3menu1 folder inside the root and also inside the Test_files folder.
4-Open the Test.html file with Coda a change the <link rel....deleting the line Test_files..and copy the head with a widget in Iweb's head (at the very top) , and then the body in another widget in Iweb's body (in the middle)
It did't worked. this is how it looks.
The links work, but not the stethics, as you can see the part wich is suppossed to be the header is a  empty widget at the top, and the part of the body is showing the plain text
I have no trouble cretaing the css3menu and it looks perfect in html. but I want to use it inside my pages creates by Iweb, first in my local folder, then once the stethics are OK upload it to my ftp.
I thing you're in the right way, because when I delete the lines with Coda and save the Test.html file (of css3menu) and opened it it looks as the second image, so it seems than when the "link rel" line changes the head and the body gates kind of foolin and do not work well for some reason.
Also the problem that Iweb open .html files in a strange way no matter if you do it as a widget or as a selection.
Another problem is the behaviour of Iweb that saves the files for the upload wherever you want, but when it opens it searches in the domain file instead of the saved to a local folder.
So resuming I have not trouble creating a menu to a html file with css3menu. My problem is to insert it in my Iweb pages in the local folder and make the edition of the pages.
Thanks a lot for your time.

  • Example of Bad CSS?

Someone here stated that a CSS web page can pass W3C validation + CSS validation, much like a spell check.  But just like a spell check a "pass" shouldn't be interpreted as necessarily good CSS formatting.
I was wondering if anyone could provide a link to an article or post some information showing an example of bad CSS and how to correct common formatting mistakes.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Live View worse than Design view, both bad, CSS & layout not applying

    Howdy,
So I'm trying to do some work on the the page seen here:
    http://www.juniper.net/us/en/products-services/network-management/
(I've attached a screenshot of it.)
I  view the source for that page and copy it into a new blank page in code view using DW CS4.
I copy all the relevant related files, as far as I know, including at least all the CSS and image files.
I view the page in Design View, and some of the styles, primarily on the text are clearly being applied. The layout, though, is all wrong, with the navigation spread out over the top without any text styling or background images, tho a few other images do show up (one in the header area and some in the body, ones that should all be about in the same directory), and the content area pushed waay out the right.
Live View is even worse, no styling at all on any of the text, and it doesn't seem to be able to locate any of the images, so it's all plain default HTML-styled text.
This is a fresh installation of CS4.
DW 8 seemed to have a similar problem rendering this layout in design view, but appplying a few design-time stylesheets, ones that should have been applying, but somehow weren't, seemed to do it, or at least pretty close. That same strategem did not seem to work here. Plus, doesn't the fact that the correct stylesheets show up as "related files" in the related files bar mean that DW knows about them and are/should be doing its level best to be applying them already?
I'm not sure how much more I can share, but does anyone have any thoughts about how to make DW render correctly?

So here's a little more info for a more complete picture of the problem...
I do have access to the original CSS, JS, and image files...When I said that I copied all the files that I believe to be relevant, I mean that I downloaded all the files from the \assets and \shared directories from the content management system, which should contain all the CSS, JS, and image files that the page uses.
When I view the file into which I saved the page's View Source on my testing server via an actual browser window, the page looks as expected.
    So, to sum up:
All the support files and "related files" seem to be in place.
When viewed through a browser fed by a web server, the file/page looks as expected. Checked in Firefox v3.5.3, IE 8, and Chrome v3.0.195.24.
When viewed in Design View, the layout looks wonky, some of the styles seem not to be applied to the navigation/header area (notably, I guess, the positioning of the navigation and content area relative to the navigation, as well as some of the text styling on the navigation), and most if not all the styling (text formatting, layout) seems to be applying in the content area. The Related Files bar seems to list all the expected related files.
When viewed in Live View, no styling is being applied anywhere. Live View is based on an integrated WebKIT browser, so it should render most closely to Chrome, right?
I know little to nothing about relevant web server configuration. Could it be possible there's some web server configuration that's set up on Juniper's web server that Dreamweaver doesn't mimic, at least by default? Are there web server configuration settings for the integrated Live View "server" that I could check?

  • Iweb 2.0.3 website generated not workinf at all for firefox or IE...

I have made a very simple site dropping iphoto pictures, and saved it onto a file. When I call the index.html file from IE (whatever the version) or firefox, no pictures, no navigation, just some text comes. (just Safari on PC works fine). I hace tried with less pictures (I am showing 1000), with no results, so it should not come from the amount of data, more onthe iWeb side.
I have no clue on html code writing, and I am not doing weird things (just showing pictures and using iWeb because the slideshow is nice (Safari). I am a bit puzzled by those errors on a very simple site (does Apple deliver tested software - It was used to, but I already had lots of problems installing the last OSX version, and now the iLife part of it is also behaving like another software/OS provider. I would not like both companies to look laike (that's why I still choose Apple...)
What should I do to make it work ? (please, if you have easy workarounds, not a tricky download of executables to be found in strange places !...) I just want to use iWeb in its simplest form, and I am surprised to be quite alone in this trouble (I have read that Internet Explorer was really bad at understanding iWeb pages, but in this case even Firefox collapses. Unfortunately the webbrowser standard is still IE or firefox (even if I like Safari, I have to comply with what is the most used in this (PC... ;-( ) world.)
Thanks alot if anyone can help, (or should I find iWeb06 : some discussions forums say it is... better than 08... and then where ?) Sorry for being so long, but details may be important)

Hi again (not been very active on the subject for some time).
I have found another thread in here that seems linked to my problem: I ain't got any number, but
you may find it looking at "IE crashing Iweb 08 blocking can be solved using Prototype 1.1.0" by balord.
It tells me : the "faulty" part is located in Iwebsite.js. It is filled by something called Prototype1.0.0
in iWeb 08, and apparently a solution could be to use a Prototype1.1.0, but up to now the description on how to fix it (changing lines within this .js) is not very clear to me. The link in there indicates a .js file, but it is far uncomprehensible, and I don't know which lines to remove, to change,...
I also tried Maestro (mentioned in the thread, but this does nothing at all (nothing !) : it only wipes out comments from the html code, and reduces images size (good enough to speed up loading, but not to clean garbage html, or js. I have found some websites that apprently are exactly the same as mine, but working (one from a model called sam nelemans... ok there should be others, but this one is the plain use of iWeb as I intended to do ... with less nude pictures !) even with IE. I shall be trying to dump her .js file, but I have to know how to do this (maybe using the activity window within Safari, not sure).
Another point : IE5 on Mac is also stuck. and if I removed the Iwebsite.js line in my html code, then even Safari is blocked as is IE. Probably it indicates that this is really the place where the bug (for me this is one) is located.
I'll try to keep you aware of progress if any. No news from Apple side (bug posted). now news, bad news...

  • Broadcast storm caused by css

Since last night we migrated another application to css, giving us bad headace now. Any ideas for our problem would be helpfull otherwise we have to fallback.
We have a vlan with all kinds of hardware and 4 css in it. 2 times 2 couples working together. 2 of type 11150 and 2 of type 11501 each for a different system (nothing to do with eachother). (In total we have 9 spread over other lans)
From sniffing this morning I found out:
A server in the network where the vip of css's are went dead. Our routers still had the ip-mac relation in its arp cache and a monitoring platform kept sending messages/pings to the dead server. Since our switches haven't allocated the mac address any more, the packet is sent to all possible interfaces of that vlan including the ones of our css. The first 2 old css are just ignoring the thing. The other 2 11503 are behaving dangerously. They accept the packets find out that they belong the way they came from and send them back. Causing to accumulate the number of packets over & over again till we have lan overflow, the full 100Mb interfaces of the css are used, application doesn't work anymore, users on the phone etc. Powering one off the backup, logically stops the storm.
This problem can happen again at random times, and didn't happen during 3 months of testing, but today I tried to power the backup up again, but the storms start over & over again. What did Murphy say again.
I powered the first 2 old one down last night, but the problem still persists.
The only thing I can come up with is to narrow the incoming access-list allowing only traffic between the 2 css & towards the vips on it. But I'm not sure if this will work, and I can't do that right now since I've got a couple of 100's of session on the device cause a throughput of continiuos 3 à 4 Mbps.
Any ideas what the nature of the behaviour of those 2 css is, the other 2 in the same segment don't act this way.
2 good css of type 11150 version 6.10 build 201
2 bad css of type 11501 version 6.20 build 3
Upgrade is not such an option sinc all other version higher which I tried have problems with http polling towards an asp page.
    Hans

I have seen a bridge loop caused by a CSS. The configuration was to have a CSS connected to two 6500 switches for redundancy. The CSS does not use the same spanning-tree multicast address as the 6500 switches. This should not be a problem because the multicast traffic should pass through the CSS and be received by the other 6500 which would then detect and block the port connected to the CSS avoiding a L2 loop.
This seemed to work fine in the lab, but when it was put on a live network I would see what I believe is the following behavior: The CSS buffer was overwhelmed by the traffic on the subnet it was connected to. This would cause the spanning-tree traffic through the CSS to be dropped. This would lead to a major spanning-tree loop that would eventually take down the entire campus network.
If you are using two interfaces connected to the same vlan, this could be the case. If you check your root bridge on a switch it will be different from the one seen by the CSS. The CSS will see itself as the root.
The only reason I had two links in the same vlan was that I had two CSS in redundancy. One was a 11500 and the other a 11050. I wanted the 11500 to be used as the primary even if the primary switch failed. I eventually removed the second link and it ran fine after that. I would rather use the 11050 if the primary switch failed than to cause another L2 loop.
    Hope this helps

  • Best drag & drop & drop business website builder for MAC?

I built a business website with iweb 06 and it did a great job and was very user friendly! However, I later found out that it'll be useless for internet searches because it doesn't have HTML code in the background for Google's search spiders. iweb is for personal websites. I have to start all over. I need to be able to drag images and videos, resize as desired and anywhere I want without technical hassles and that can also take .flv movie files which I believe is the best universal media format for internet marketing purposes. Too bad iweb doesn't come out with a business friendly application. It's a great software, but not for the business community. Any recommendations out there for one that will work like iweb?

You can drag images and videos all over iWeb pages.
flv files are Flash Video files. Current flash video players support .m4v files, the ones you create with iMovie.
Here are samples for your pleasure to study and nim:
    http://www.wyodor.net/iFrame/
    http://www.wyodor.net/MoreEmbed/
And here are tutorials that explains how to embed such movies, or other HTML code, in an iWeb page.

[How to add a movie to your blog |http://www.wyodor.net/iWebBlogTest/Wyodor1/archives/2009/05/entry35.html] (Don't be misled by the title. It works equally well in iWeb.)
You may have to learn HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
    iweb is for personal websites.
There are lots of businesses who use iWeb. Since you did not state the business you're in, it's hard to tell why it won't work for you.
Too bad iweb doesn't come out with a business friendly application.
What's business friendly? Is a business different from +"very user friendly"+.
Anyway, ask for it ; http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html
It's a great software, but not for the business community.
Perhaps not for the community, but it could be for you. Who decides?
that it'll be useless for internet searches because it doesn't have HTML code in the background for Google's search spiders
Write interesting content. People usually find you because they already know you.
Here are some observation that counter the Google-obsessed 'facts':
*Search Engine Optimization is not a legitimate form of marketing. It should not be undertaken by people with brains or souls. If someone charges you for SEO, you have been conned.*
+Make something great. Tell people about it. Do it again.+
+That’s it. Make something you believe in. Make it beautiful, confident, and real. Sweat every detail. If it’s not getting traffic, maybe it wasn’t good enough. Try again.+
+Remember this: *It’s not your job to create content for Google.*+
+Then do it again. And again. You’ll build a reputation for doing good work, meaning what you say, and building trust.+
+It’ll take time. A lot of time. But it works. And it’s the only thing that does.+

  • Why can't Apple make 'publish changes only' for non .mac users?

The recent iWeb update to 1.1 and the now increasingly obvious differential between .mac and non .mac features has prompted me to post here today.
I can understand comments, passwords and search facilities being a .mac only experience because it requires server side technology. I can also understand that .mac users get enhanced features like slideshows as well.
But why is the fundamentally *basic* option to 'publish the changes only' not available to non .mac users?
I know uploading to .mac uses a different protocol to uploading via FTP, but I don't think it is about that. Obviously the software engine in iWeb 1.1 can now track the pages that have changed, and flag those for uploading. So if the facility to do this is not available with non .mac uploading, is this some form of crippleware? Can any software engineers comment on this or am I talking off the top of my head? [And please mods, don't delete this post - I use the word 'crippleware' in its harshest form, clearly I can still use iWeb to make fantastic websites - I am asking a technical question here.]

    A Trusty Quicksilver G4 Dual 1GHz

    OK, from reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=486335&tstart=0
There is a pattern: An error occurred while publishing file “/blah/blah", while file "/blah/blah" seems to be random from one person to the next, but they all share one thing and that is communication protocol.
For iWeb to be able to publish changes to .Mac, it has to:
    1. identify if the file exists
    2. do the following:
2a. if not exists, copy it to .Mac
2b. if exist, do some sort comparison - CRC checksum -
2b1. if checksums match, don't copy
2b2. if checksums don't match copy it to .Mac
At least I think that's what going on, I don't have .Mac so that is best I can think of. Perhaps, some Apple SW engineers can jump in here.
Now, the bad part is iWeb has to (and I'm assuming iWeb uses WebDAV):
    1. go thru each file locally
    2. crawl its way into .Mac (WebDAV is a slow protocol) to find the the counter part.
    3. when it finds a file that matches a client side file, it has to (some how) do checksum on-the-fly across the net work (which is slow and congested)
#3 is I think where it failed, there are many factors here: 1) networks congestion 2) latency 3) protocol overhead 4) checksum calculation time etc...
iWeb eventually times out because any/all of the above.
It's nice that WebDAV can author to the host yada, yada, but it's so SLOOOOOW.
What I would do is for every publishing, I would build a files and their checksums keep it on the host (or local, must be hidden).
For subsequence publishing, I would (use a fast protocol like FTP) download this pre-built files/checksums list. Locally, do a full publishing, making checksum comparison, the result is delta changes; upload only those. Build a new files/checksums list upload that too.
What I mean to say is offload everything that is possible to local machine, bandwidth is PREMIUM!

Hi, I have a small personal site, www.baskie.com it's built (badly!) using iWeb and it's hosted on my own server.
When I used iWeb 08, published to a folder, then uploaded to my server using an FTP client as was well, now with iWeb09 I have set things up to upload direct to my server using iWeb. All is well except no pictures or albums appear.
The albums and pics appear in iWeb on my Macbook no problem, but nothing appears on the server after uploading.
    Anyone any ideas?

  • Links and rollover question - not what you think

A little glitch in iWeb: I have a web page that is all white with black text. When I create a link with one of the words it turns white, but by page is white and the the linked word appears to be gone, only reapears when the mouse pointer hovers over it. Is there a way to change the colors of a link.

I have an article on my site outlining modifications you can make to the CSS file that iWeb generates, so that you can have whatever colours you want (Articles > Hyperlinks and CSS in iWeb)
The other option is to choose a different template, or have a different background of course!

Have you looked directly in the folder Library/Fonts to make sure the font is really missing (and you are not just getting a bad message from iWeb)? If you open TextEdit and do Format > Font > Show Fonts, is this font really missing from the list?

  • Visited link color on unvisited links

This isn't a major issue, just a curiosity, but does anybody know why I often find links on Google and Wikipedia and the like that are purple, like links to pages I've been to, yet I've never visted them? They're not websites I don't remember visiting; I've checked my history to the past year, and nothing.
    Who knows why this is?

I DO see what you are talking about, Jeff. After I visit the links embedded in your paragraph of text, they change to the same color as the rest of the text. And unless I move the mouse cursor back over the text and cause the link to underline I would never know that the link existed. I can see how this could be a potential problem for visitors.
I'm afraid that the only way to change this behavior currently is to go into the CSS files published by iWeb and make edits there. I'll include the link to Michael Wong's tutorial page on doing just this here in case you get motivated...
    Hyperlinks and CSS in iWeb
Otherwise, the workarounds that I would suggest would be to either not have your links embedded in a paragraph of text (probably less likely to happen). The better workaround is probably to change the color of your NON-hyperlinked "background" text to something else.
I know all this workaround business and CSS editing business is annoying. Let's hope that future versions of iWeb incorporate a little user customization in this area. Good luck to you, Jeff.

  • Changing Font in SlideShow Template

    Good morning,
In creating an iWeb page I have chosen the Black>Photos theme. After clicking on one of the photos in my album I am taken to an enlargement of said photo with buttons from 'Back to Album', 'Previous' and 'Next'. I would like to change the font and color of these buttons. Is this possible?
    Thanks for you time,
    John

Thanks you very much for your detailed help. It seems I will have a lot to learn before I attempt any of your 3 suggestions. What is a CSS file and how might I go about learning to make one?
CSS controls style sheets on the page: http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/
Photos page CSS file is in your photosPage_files folder, but as I mentioned you need to know iweb widgets also.
By default, photos page has three widget: header controls, detail view and footer controls widgets, but depend on if and how many other widgets such as nav bar, HTML Snippets... iweb build CSS files accordingly.
CSS and iweb widgets (javascript) are difficult to understand, because of the abstract nature. A lot reading and asking questions, W3.org is a good place to start.
