Bad graphic performance

Hi all
I've been working on an animation project (using Carrara), and initially thought that bad colour banding in shade areas was due to the program.
Now I have tried a simple grey scale in Photoshop, and find that if I adjust the brightness, the same horrible banding occurs. It has a posterised/insufficient colour depth look to it.
I don't recall this occurring before I changed to Snow Leopard; the change in gamma makes me wonder, but I really don't know what might be occurring.
Does anyone have any observations? Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere - I did search.
Thanks
Peter

I'm experencing the same issues as well. The update specifically referenced "graphics performance," so it's safe to assume Apple made some driver changes here. Thus, this will likley require a further update from either Apple or Blizzard.
I don't have a solution but I have issued a ticket with Blizzard. I would suggest you do the same as well. If enough WoW players are experiencing this problem then Blizzard will be more likely to fix it, or file bugs with Apple.

  • Graphics performance - external monitor

    Hello everybody.
    I've run into a problem..
When I add an external monitor to my rMBP 15", the graphics performance is reduced by quite a bit. Example: when I play League of Legends on my built in monitor, it runs smoothly at 60fps with almost the highest graphic settings. But when I play it on the external monitor, with the lid closed, it's going at 30fps with the lowest graphic settings.
    Here's the twist..
I bootcamped it, just to test if there'd be any difference. And surely, there was. Suddenly I could play with the highest graphic settings at 60fps on my external monitor.
    Here's my setup:
MacBook Pro Retina 15", mid 2012.
    Asus VE278Q
The monitor is connected with a HDMI cable.

I have the same hardware, a rMBP with the quad 2.6, 16 gigs of ram and the NVidia 650.  I don't have the problems you are describing but I play different games - mostly borderlands, so perhaps that makes a difference.
The first thing I would suggest is to use something other than an HDMI cable.  I can't remember the details but I recall reading that the throughput of the HDMI is limited, especially compared to thunderbolt, so I would try switching first.  Of course you are roughly quadripling the pixels you are pushing when you go from 1440x900 (native retina) to 2880x1800 .... so that could be it, and I would also try to scale the external monitor 1440x900 ... and see what happens.
Lastly, most games run a lot faster under windows than OSX.  Sad but true.  I sometimes run the same game on my server ( a proliant with a Xeon quad @ 3.3 ghz with either a decidedly low end GT630 video card.  It smokes the retina MBP, badly for whichever game I have ever tried. They look better, they run much faster.  That said, I still like to game on the Mac and only use the Server when I need a third machine when my daughter comes to kick my butt.  I personally will take the ease and elegance over the speed, since the rMBP is fast enough.

  • How about the Graphic Performance?

    Hello all!
May someone can help me to get that clarified ...
I have a MacMini with Thunderbolt connection. Latley I started to use RC Flight simulator which challenges the video card of my MacMini pretty much.
How about a Thunderbolt Display? Will TB just "substitute" my current HDMI-Connection or will some computing power be "outsourced" to the display? In other words: will the graphic performance of my MacMini improve using a TB-Display or does it stay the same because the build in video card is still "in charge"?
    Thx for your help!

No question the Thunderbolt is without doubt a fantastic display, however to answer your question I'm personally experiencing a performance drop (see my very recent thread in this forum).
One of my reasons for finally getting the Thunderbolt Display was to enjoy some proper gaming on a big screen for 3D games both within OS X and Bootcamp. Even when I match my MacBook Pro 17" unibody's (early 2011) top resolution with the Thunderbolt Display for a like for like comparison, I get a performance drop which I was hoping would never happen. I was hoping that with the MacBook Pro in closed 'clamshell' and thus the MacBook Pro switching it's own display 'off' and presumably diverting all of the GPU's performance power straight to the Thunderbolt Display via it's direct fast Thunderbolt bus; that it would at the very very least match the performance when using the MacBook Pro's own display, but currently I have to choose the 'very low' graphics setting on some games to maintain a decent frame-rate for smooth game play.
Mybe this is not a permanent Thunderbolt Display problem/fault and might be resolved at some point by means of a software, display driver or display/thunderbolt/GPU firmware update. If that be the case then I'll know there's hope at the end of the tunnel. Understandably I wasn't expecting my MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 to perform miracles with it's graphics performance anyhow, but it's 1GB Graphics adapter isn't all that bad either and is a half decent card that can give acceptable results. But If you where to match the resolution of the Thunderbolt Display to that of the MacBook Pro for comparison for yourself and then run a 3D game like say 'Dirt 2', you will soon realise there are slight performance issues; unless of course I'm doing something wrong.
Here's hoping this may only be a temporary drawback for the Thunderbolt Display with 3D applications/gaming.

  • Poor graphics performance over time

I've seen an issue ever since upgrading to Lion where after some period of time (haven't nailed down how long, but measured in hours) 3D game performance suffers greatly (60+fps down to 12fps).  Rebooting fixes the issue until it sits long enough.
The drop doesn't seem to happen mid-game... only after leaving for a while and returning to the computer.   I've run all the usual diagnostics.  The iMac does not "sleep" during that time (i have it set to always on).  During the performance slow down, all system stats look normal: no spikes in CPU usage, memory usage, etc.  All internal temperatures report out normal as well.   No other hardware or software changes other than the Lion upgrade.  When the FPS slow down is occuring, all system animations also suffer (sliding in Dashboard, Dock magnification, etc).   Quit the game and the system animations come back to full speed.
The game I play most often's technical support is worthless (i'm looking at you Blizzard), so I'm hoping someone else has run in to this issue, or that an actual support person can help without telling me to run a permissions check.
    Thanks!

I just bought this MacBook Pro the 26th and it came with Leopard. After installing XP on the system, I can't get over the fact of the poor graphics performance. Even moving windows would result in a bad frame rate. Obviously, this is caused by a lack of "good" drivers for the GeForce 8600M GT. The drivers from Nvidia aren't working, so either this is the best of Windows I'm getting on this system or there's some sort of driver that I haven't heard of. Does anyone have any insight on this?

  • Get the best graphical performance

I've been developing an application where the graphical appearance is very important, so every panel has a 1280x1024 size with a 32-bit color depth picture control as large as the panel itself used as background; moreover there are a lot of other picture controls.
In this situation, loading and displaying panels is very slow, so I need to know form some CVI developers how I can improve these operations:
is the performance of LoadPanel() affected by the size of the whole uir file, or by the size of the panel to be loaded? Is it a good idea having more than a panel in a single uir, if the uir size is more or less 100MB? I think there should be no difference...
while updating tables, the performance increases if they're set as invisible before updating, and set as visible at the end. When a panel has been loaded, but not displayed yet, is the graphical performance affected by hiding or showing controls? I don't think so, because I think that if a panel is not displayed, all its controls are invisible, but I'm not sure...
    Thanks

After having reduced the images as possible, there are 2 or 3 uir files with a size of 20MB. All the uir files are then embedded into the executable files (that is more than 100MB large).
I've already considered other design schemes for loading images, but this one is the best for my application: the problem is that the graphical performance of CVI are quite bad (as already discussed in the past)
I've been trying to get the highest performance from CVI, but the improvements are not so easy.
I don't have any particular issue with tables: it was only an example where a quite simple workaround dramatically increases the graphical performance.
You could update all the values, then refresh the display rather than refreshing the display after each data update
How can I suspend the display refreshing in CVI? I know LabVIEW has a panel property, but I haven't found any CVI function to do the same. I call ProcessDrawEvents() to force the refresh, but how can I suspend it?

  • Improving graphics performance in DIAdem 11.0 Report?

    Dear Forum,
when working on a Report layout, the poor graphic performance of DIAdem is a real problem for me.
For example, many diagrams with lots of data are on one page. One opens the proficiencies of one of the diagrams and changes e.g. the curves color or whatever and closes the dialog window. After this, the whole Report page is refreshed - wich takes up to one minute, depending on the amount of data displayed.
The strange thing is, when I close the given dialog window, and while the report page is being refreshed sent DIAdem to the taskbar and open any other application window, the process of refreshing the screen takes only 1 second instead of 30 seconds.
The question is: Is there a tweak to improve the speed how DIAdem refreshes the report page? Or is there any workaround other than switching applications during refreshing?
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings from Germany
    Oliver

    Hello Oliver,
The easiest way to speed up the graphics performance in Report with large data files (or 3D graphs with lots of nodes) is to turn off the "Data Layer" (German: "Datenebene") in the "View" menu (German: "Ansicht").
That function basically turns off the display of all data in Report, but retains the axis systems, texts, etc., so you can still move them, place them and edit them without having to guess sizes. Once you're done with the report, simply turn the data layer back on and you're ready to create a PDF, print or save the result as an image file (JPG, BMB, etc.).
I think the performance difference you described (1 vs. 30 seconds) is due to the fact that once DIAdem has drawn a page, it retains an image in memory and will simply draw that image when you bring DIAdem to the foreground (or maximize it). After any edits you make to the report (e.g. change the color of a graph), DIAdem redraws the complete page from scratch, which takes much longer then just re-displaying an image that has already been drawn previously. Someone from the DIAdem R&D team could probably do a better job explaining this, but I think this is the explanation for the time difference in drawing.
Anyway, the "Data Layer" trick should hopefully solve your problem, let us know if that works for you.

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

  • IMac 27 mid 2010 graphics performance issue

    Hi all
my iMac has a strange problem and I need to understand how to fix it.
First of all, this my configuration:
    iMac 27'' - 2.8 ghz - 12 Gb RAM - ATI 5750 1GB GDDR5, Mountain Lion 10.8.2
The problem is simple. After a while, the graphic performance slows down quickly with fluctuant speed (fast then slow, then fast...). I've noticed that in 3D games, in Photoshop and in other applications that uses GPU or intense graphics operations (also Finder animation like window animations)...
I can't understand if it's a hardware failure (but note that Apple made me an AHT just a couple of days ago, during the 1 Tb Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program and nothing was found) or a Software problem... But OSX is a fresh install, for example...
Is there a way to check GPU deeply?
Please help me, i'm really hopeless

It certainly sounds possible that your video card is failing.  You might want to reboot from your Original Installation Disk and run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or the Extended Apple Hardware Test to check for hardware failiure.. Other than that, time for a trip to the Apple Store for a check up.
    Hope this helps

  • Bad INSERT performance when using GUIDs for indexes

    Hi,
we use Ora 9.2.0.6 db on Win XP Pro. The application (DOT.NET v1.1) is using ODP.NET. All PKs of the tables are GUIDs represented in Oracle as RAW(16) columns.
When testing with mass data we see more and more a problem with bad INSERT performance on some tables that contain many rows (~10M). Those tables have an RAW(16) PK and an additional non-unique index which is also set on a RAW(16) column (both are standard B*tree). An PerfStat reports tells that there is much activity on the Index tablespace.
When I analyze the related table and its indexes I see a very very high clustering factor.
Is there a way how to improve the insert performance in that case? Use another type of index? Generally avoid indexed RAW columns?
    Please help.

    Hi
After my last tests I conclude at the followings:
    The query returns 1-30 records
    Test 1: Using Form Builder
    -     Execution time 7-8 seconds
    Test 2: Using Jdeveloper/Toplink/EJB 3.0/ADF and Oracle AS 10.1.3.0
    -     Execution time 25-27 seconds
Test 3: Using JDBC/ADF and Oracle AS 10.1.3.0
    - Execution time 17-18 seconds
    When I use:
    session.setLogLevel(SessionLog.FINE) and
    session.setProfiler(new PerformanceProfiler())
I don’t see any improvement in the execution time of the query.

  • Adjust Graphics Performance on 2009 13" MBP

How can I force the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M card to stay in high performance (as opposed to battery conversation) mode? I've seen the documentation on the Graphics Performance checkbox in the "Display" system pref, but that is only present in the 15" and 17" models. I'm not sure if I need to install some kind of driver or modify a startup setting somewhere, but when I try to use a Micro DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, I get lots of video noise on the TV image and even some short-interval white band flashing in the lower third of the TV. An older MacBook using a Mini DVI to HDMI adapter works almost perfectly, and the only thing I've been able to identify as a possible culprit is the low power mode that I think is the default on the 13" MacBook Pro with NVIDIA card. I'm running the current version of Mountain Lion - 10.8.3 with 4 GB RAM.
    Thanks,
    -Brad.

The problem is OS X Lion chiefly, it's a new buggy operating system that third party programs are not all quite in tune with it yet.
The second problem is you got the 2.0 Ghz model, which the card scores a 18 on the Open Gl tests.
The HD 3000 Intel integrated graphics scores 11, so you see your descrete card isn't all that much more powerful that crappy CPU graphics.
The 2.2 Ghz and the 2.3 Ghz, the descrete graphics in there scores 30 on the Open Gl tests, so it's much better.
But compared to a Windows 7 desktop with a graphics card you can replace over and over, there is no comparison. And the Mac Pro is more of a CPU powerhouse than a graphics powerhouse, as there are hardly any third party cards for it.
So if you want to 3D game on a computer, you really need a Windows 7 64 bit tower, with expandable RAM to at least 16GB, 4 GB by default.
One doesn't buy a Mac or any computer laptop to serious 3D game (heat, cooling and battery limit), at least not for long.

  • Bad query performance - how to analyze it?

    Hi all,
since 8 weeks we locate a bad query performance (round about 30% worse than before) in our BW system. At the moment we use a BIA on revision 49 with 4 blades (16GB).
I have already read note 1318214 and analyzed that the most time is spend on the virtual provider(over 80%!).
I´ve seen that a lot of time is spend on the "Datamanager":
For example: It takes 0,76s to select 3.5million items in the relative provider and 78s!!! to select 0 items in the virtual provider.
    information from RSDDSTATTREXSERV:
RFC Server    BIA client  BIA Kernel    ABAP RFC
    497          464              450               619
So it seems to be a problem an the BW site, what can we do to improve the performance or analyse the query performance better.
    Best Regards,
    Jens

    Hi Jens,
A few checks you may consider doing.
BIA Availability :  Check the BI connection with BIA.
Check if you need to rebuild BIA indices again. SAP recommends to do this often, to repair the degenerate indices or delete the indice which are not referenced any more.(eg data in the cube was compressed/deleted and the indices are no more needed.)
Check the if BIA  reorganization is required - This is done to see the indices are evenly distribueded areoss the BIA Landscape.
Try to find from BI Admin if major administration work was done within these 8 weeks.eg: Copy cube, dimension restructureing, copying data to some copy cube, archiving etc.
You can use the BIA monitor to peform checks/monitor alerts from BIA servers
    [ BIA monitor|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/43/7719d270d81a6ee10000000a11466f/content.htm]
This link would tell you on the overall status of the BIA and any actions if required.
Also it has sublinks to other important transaction of BIA monitoring and maintainnance.
To go to BIA monitor : RSA!---> BIA monitor icon.
Is your virtual provider reading data from R/3 or BW.
Generally virtual providers are used to read data from other systems , so it woulfd not have an indices in BIA, I believe if this is the case. except for some applications like BCS wher eyou may be reading data from BW itself.
    Hope this helps
    Bext regards,

  • [SOLVED] [QEMU] Improve graphics performance/resolution

    Hi,
I use qemu's kvm feature and successfuly installed Windows 7 in it.
Everything works quite well except the graphics performance being very poor.
When I move the cursor it starts flickering ('lagging') and I can't set the resolution fitting my laptop screen with a native resolution of 1366x768. (So currently using 1024x768 in the VM)
I start qemu with -vga vmware.
command I use for starting qemu:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -vga vmware -full-screen -k de -usb -usbdevice tablet -m 3072 /path/to/image.qcow2
Is there a way to fix this??

Finally got it working now, performance is surprisingly good!!!
I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium, then I discovered you cannot remote-connect to Home Prem as this version lacks that feature
So I got me Ultimate 64bit and it works.
I start the qemu vm with:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -nographic -k de -usb -m 4096 -net nic -net user,hostfwd=tcp::3389-:3389 /home/kanikuly/Pictures/ISO/Win7Ult64Bit.qcow2

  • 10.6.7 Serious Graphics Performance Trouble

    Hello.
Today I updated my MacBook from 10.6.5 to 10.6.7 using the Combo Updater as well as doing a few other system updates. Already since 10.6.4 my graphics performance had worsened considerably as I had what appeared to be overheat trouble with the GPU after 15 minutes of gaming at most, making the FPS drop from 60 to 15 randomly.
With the update to 10.6.7 I now can't even exceed 20 frames per second in the first place anymore. Games in which the error occurs: FlightGear 2.0.0 pre3, Redline 1.0.5
Apart from in games, my Mac generally gets "stuck" particularly often, no matter if it's supposed to move a 15 MB video file into trash or if I'm editing a couple of images with Gimp.
What could cause this and how could the error be solved?
    Hardware:
    MacBook Aluminium Unibody 13"
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz
    2 GB DDR3-RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB (shared)

Found this on another discussion forum.
These are the .kext and other files which needs to be replaced. You should back up before you install any packages:
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce7xxxGLDriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceGA.plugin
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceGLDriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/GeForceVADriver.bundle
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAGF100Hal.kext (if it exists)
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV40Hal.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDANV50Hal.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAResman.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/NVSMU.kext
You can get around the hardware verification check by right-clicking the .mpkg and selecting "Show Package Contents".
In the "Contents" folder that's shown, navigate to "Packages".
Inside that you'll see three .pkg files: Display Driver.pkg, OpenGL Driver.pkg, and Video Driver.pkg.
Each of these hopefully installs without a hardware verification check.
There is another solion given by edit setup checking algorithm:
Simply locate "distribution.dist" inside driver package,
then delete part of program with "unsupported_title" and "unsupported_message" strings, save and install.

  • CS6- Sluggish Graphics performance

    Hi;
I just installed Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 7 64-Bit system with an ATI 5870 Graphics card and the latest ATI 12.4 drivers. Graphics performance seems to be noticeably worse than CS4 that I upgraded from.
The very first thing I tried was pasting a copy of an open Desktop Window (Alt-Printscreen) into Photoshop (File/New then paste). Then I simply alternated between 'Fit on screen' and 'Actual Pixels' to watch the magnification change.
'Zooming' performance seems noticeably slower/jerkier than with CS4.
I played around with the 'performance' options and I discovered that the fastest setup seems to be when I go to Graphics Processor Setting and uncheck the 'Use Graphics processor' box (It was checked by default) . Then, things seem pretty snappy. The zoom doesn't seem to have much of any 'animation' as it changes level.
The next quickest seems to be when I leave the 'Use Graphics processor' box checked, but change the 'Advanced settings'/Drawing Mode to 'Basic' (down from the default 'Advanced').
Here, the zoom seems to be smooth, but seems to have a little bit of an 'animated' appearance as it is growing or shrinking (as it changes the zoom level). The worst performance is the default drawing mode of 'Advanced'.
Does anyone else see this issue with CS6 and ATI graphics? Is it expected to have to turn down the graphics setting to get improved performance?
The ATI 5870 isn't too shabby of a video card, and I expected better with CS6.
The 64-Bit version speed doesn't seem any different, although the Graphics setting for 'Use OpenCL' is checked in 64-bit version of CS6
My CPU is an Intel I980X (3.33 GHz) 6-Core system, in case that helps.
       Thanks;
         -Greg

I rolled back the drivers to the AMD 12.2 Catalyst video driver version and things do seem much improved.
With only limited testing so far, things now appear to be (mostly) at least as fast as without the 'Use graphics card' option checked.
I say mostly because with the graphics card being used, I now see some short 'delays' in some actions that aren't there without it. For example, starting CS6 and then doing a 'new' followed by 'paste' seems to have a little delay in there that's not present without the use  graphics card option. (Maybe it's initializing the card, I don't know).
It seems like the graphical effects for things like 'Iris Blur' look  fancier with the graphics card being used, but so far it's not clear if they are actually any faster/more responsive. 'liquefy' looks very smooth with or without the 'use graphics card' option.
At least performance is no longer absolutely horrible (using the 'Graphics acceleration')... . I'll have to try it out some more.
      Thanks!

    Hi..
You can define costing variants which have valuation variant for budgeted values parallel to the standard cost estimate  in Customizing for Product Cost Controlling.
You can define target cost versions using above costing variants under the customizing transaction OKV6 as below picture.
When you calculate variances, you can check “all target cost version” flag to calculate variances  for all target cost versions in the controlling area as below picture.
You can analysis the difference between actual cost and several budget cost using target cost version as below picture.
