Bad Packets ModBusTCP

I'm having an issue with packets being gargled in modbus TCP.
Here is a screenshot of the packet in wireshark
And here is the packet in labview.
The two are very different.
Also on the packet, he header is allocated 7 bytes of space (2 for Transaction Identifier, 2 for Protocal, 2 for Length, 1 for Unit ID). And I'll read 7 packets incoming, but it appears shifted, aka 6 not 3, and the entire packet appears wrong.
What confuses me is that I'm that function code and the rest of packets appears correctly in wireshark, and labview is reading it correctly when the binary data isn't that same.
Help, please
Cody.
P.S.: All my code can be found at https://github.com/valarauca/G-MODbus-TCP-MBA-lib

Okay so I found out where the random noise packets were coming from.
Even if I run the fetch in a one shot
Open port, poll for info, then run TCP close. It doesn't actually close the connection (aka FIN in the TCP connection flag). It continues to repeat forever for what I can see.
The master says 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 8F 03
The slave says 00 00 00 00 00 06 00 02 00 01 00 04
The master says 00 00 00 00 00 04 00 02 01 02
The slave responds 00 00 00 00 00 07 00 0F 00 00 00 00 00
And it repeats. I really don't know why, but what ever.
Either way this creates an interesting problem. Because the single port slave deamon continues to alloce resources to this TCP connection even if it should have been closed, by the master (via the TCP Close Connection, so does this actually close the TCP connection?).
I'm attempting to circulate the problem by giving everything a protocol header of 1. Will post if it works.
Edit 1: Apperently I should google before I post, that is a documented error the SERVER needs to close the connection also for it to fully close. Which is easy I guess I'll just close the connection if the length is wrong, I really don't think I can get a MODbus/TCP packet with a length less then 6, which is literally the smallest request I can make. So I'll set it up so that if length is less the 6 "MB Ethernet Recieve.vi" will error, and when an error progates in the slave deamon it will result in the port being closed, and the error being ignored, I guess.

  • Why is the AEBS bottlenecking my ReadyNAS devices leading to bad packets and TCP Retransmits?

Bad Packets Unrecovered TCP Retransmits TCP Retransmits w ReadyNAS NV NV+ and Airport Extreme Base Station 5th Generation
I got an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), 5th generation this past November to bring my entire network up to gigE standards and extend my wireless range a bit. I have really liked the AEBS 5th Gen overall since I got it 3 months ago. It was easy to setup and update and things have been noticeably faster. I can also easily take my netbook, laptop, and iPad out to my shop some 80 feet away from my AEBS and still surf rather well wirelessly too. I couldn't do this even with my previous D-Link wireless-n setup.
In December I picked up an old ReadyNAS NV+ to go along with my old ReadyNAS NV. When I finally started to setup the new network for my business in February, I noticed in the logs that I was getting a large numbers of bad packets, TCP retransmits, and unrecovered TCP retransmits. Previously, I had never had errors of any sort with any older network setups using linksys, dlink and netgear routers during the last 6 years.
Eventually cables, switches, and routers can go bad which results in the errors I have been getting so I went through the "Troubleshoot My Performance Problem/Check for Network Errors" section of the link below to try and figure out what was causing my problem.
    My Initial Setup:
    Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS):
    - 1 incoming Cat5e from Motorola Surfboard 6120,
    - 2 Cat5e connections to my wifes work network with her business computer and VOIP phone.
    - 1 Cat 5e interconnecting the AEBS to my wired network on the HP Procurve Switch.
The AEBS manages addresses via DHCP on my wired network for all of my devices on the HP Procurve 14008G Switch:
    - 1 to NV
    - 1 NV+
    - 1 MacMini 2010
    - 1 MacMini 2005
    - 1 networked Epson R-3000 printer
    1. Simple things first. Since I have always made all my own Cat 5e cable I figured I'd better get some better(?) cabling strait away. I went ordered new Cat 6 and Cat 6a cables to connect the NV, NV+, and my main Mac to the switch and connect the switch to the AEBS. The errors kept coming.
    2. Then I separately connected each NAS unit directly to my computer by setting up the static IP on my computer first. Once I reconnected each ReadyNAS with the computer directly they defaulted to a static IP.  Neither NAS had errors.
    3. Errors were coming from either a bad Procurve 1400 switch or a bad AEBS. I hooked everything directly to my Airport Extreme and got lots of errors.
    4. I decided to check the switch also. I altered each ReadyNAS's default static IP to one of my choosing individually. Then I hooked both ReadyNAS units to my HP Procurve 1400 switch. I hooked the switch directly to my computer and got no errors from either NAS. I continue to get no errors the next day.
    5. When I first ran my tests I had Jumbo Frames turned Off. Currently, Jumbo Frames are On and there are still no errors and seems to be no slowness either.
    Conclusion:
The Airport Extreme is the bottleneck causing the errors in my network.
Perhaps there is something I can alter which will rid me of the errors, but this type of error makes the AE seem to be pretty shoddy. A newer state-of-the-art router should not be bottlenecking my rather archaic slow network devices. Apparently, the 4th Gen AEBS's couldn't do Jumbo Frames, but this current model is supposed to, but I see no setting for changing the MTU.
    Questions:
What could be causing the bottleneck?
Do I have a bad router?
How could I analyze this problem?
Has anyone else had similar issues and if so how were they resolved?
    Current Setup:
All of my computers and NAS devices are hooked to my Procurve Switch each with its own Static IP.
The switch is working flawlessly with no Errors.
The network printer is now wireless and  connected via the AEBS.
I am using wireless-n to connect to internet via the AEBS on my main machine.
I am sharing the internet connection with the other Mac Mini on the switch and any other machine I plug into the switch (not ideal).
    Problem is:
I am not a systems administrator and don't really want to tinker with setting up Static IP's for the machines I hook and unhook to the switch.
I want the AEBS to manage addresses via DHCP so everything accessing my router will mindlessly be able to access all things on my network.
Can the AEBS be made to not produce errors or do I just have a lemon.

    Hi Bob,
That's the strange thing. When I had both GHz channels working on one SSID, once in a while my iMAC would pick the 5 GHz channel (44 seems the best for me). I always use channel 1 for 2.4 GHz because I get the fastest speeds with it.
When the iMac would pick 5 GHz, the slowdown was very obvious. As I explained in my (long) first post, I immediately felt the difference. Now the $50K question - since the 5 GHz channel at that point was stronger than the 2.4 GHz one, why wasn't the speed faster? Why was it so slow compared to 2.4 GHz? That's what rattling my brain. If the 5 GHz signal's strong enough to get picked by my iMac, then why isn't there a commensurate speed increase? There must be something else going on here besides signal strength. If the 5 GHz spec says that I must have full strength to get 5 GHz speeds, then that makes sense. But I think it doesn't, that's why I believe I have a configuration problem somewhere, or a faulty AEBS.
I might add that my firmware's up-to-date in the AEBS and AX, and Airport Utility too.
I think heading to 4Runner's camp - even with high signal strength (and I would consider 3 of 4 bars high), the 5 GHz speeds aren't showing themselves.
    Here's some snap's of my AEBX's setup:
I think my configuration's fine, although I've tried so many different options, I'm a little confused, but I know that changing the Multicast Rate doesn't have any noticeable effect on the speed. I also have "Use Wide Channels" checked, but as I said, the 5 GHz band is awfully slow for using both channels. I have set "N" only, so no "G" clients to slow it down.
    Mind boggling!

  • Bad packet type

I am running a JAVA applet which connects to Oracle. When I run the applet on my local machine with a local Oracle database everything runs fine. When I change the connect string and move it to the production server and then try to acces it through the browser on my machine I get the error "java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Bad packet type". Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Glenn...

Hope you are making sure that the applet and HTML page is being served out from the same machine that has the Oracle Database. You may even run into a security error if one is referenced by IP and one by server name.

  • System.log fills up with bad packets errors (Multicast packet - CRC error)

    Hello,
I've been trying to Google my problem but found no answers; hopefully someone can help me?
Whenever I'm online, my System.logs fills up (every second, and sometimes, multiple times each second) with the following message :
19/12/07 12:51:01 PM kernel AppleYukon2 - bad packet received. length: 60, packet status bits: Multicast packet, CRC error
19/12/07 12:51:01 PM kernel AppleYukon2 - bad packet received. length: 60, packet status bits: Multicast packet, CRC error
My DSL modem is connect directly into my iMac. It's a Speedstream 5360). I never have any problems connecting to the Internet and the speed I get is fine. When I configured my Network settings, I only added my PPPoE Service name username and âssword - everything else was automatically added (Ethernet configuration).
Is there anything I should change in the Advanced Settings?
The System.log causes me problem because it often causes the application Console to crash when I try to view it.

I should add that this problem didn't exist when I was using Tiger.
Also, when I called Apple Tech Support, I was simply told "just don't play with the Console".

Our problem is that we have a load balancing solution for webservices (axis), using mod_jk, which works for lets say about 5 hours after that the services become unavailable (wsdl still reachanble by the browser, but unreachable/unusable form the applications using teh webservices).
Sometimes the tomcat crashes and this Exception appears in its logs.

  • SSH Disconnecting: Bad packet length

If I log into my new Xserves (running 10.4.4) using an invalid username, after I submit a password, ssh will hang for a long time then report:
    Disconnecting: Bad packet length xxxxxx
My older Xserves (running 10.2 and 10.3) don't have this problem, they will just say "Permission denied, please try again" and prompt for the password again. eventually they'll disconnect you, but not with an error.
Has Apple supplied a new version of SSH in 10.4 that is broken in some way?
I have noticed this on both OS X server, and the desktop version (All at 10.4.4)
This doesn't seem to be a problem if you use a valid login, only when you use an invalid userid.
Any one else run into this? Any idea how to make ssh behave?
    thanks
    -jason

In this case I was attempting to connect via my laptop (a powerbook) that was connected to the servers via a gigabit switch (the only intervening piece of equipment). Needless to say, these are about the most reliable connections you could expect to have.
However, I've seen this behavior, when connecting to:
2 different Xserves running 10.4.4 Server
    1 DualG5 powermac running 10.4.4 and
    1 Powerbook also running 10.4.4
However when connecting to 10.2.x or 10.3.x servers, I receive the Permission denied response as one would expect.
I just had an epiphany ....
While attempting to disable password authentication on the 2 xserves altogether, I had to set not only "PasswordAuthentication no", but also "UsePAM no".
So, perhaps the problem is that UsePAM is set to yes by default....
I just attempted to log in to my workstation (10.4.4 with an unmodified sshd_config file) using a bogus username and I received:
"Disconnecting: Bad packet length 4185019582" after an extended delay
Then I changed the config file to set "UsePAM no" and tried the login again. this time I received:
"Permission denied, please try again." almost immediately
So, It appears that the default configuration that has PAM enabled for sshd is the problem here.
Thanks for having me revisit this after sitting on it for a couple of days. It led me to the solution.

I am also experiencing this. It doesn't seem to happen as fast as it does for you, but does happen when I start copying files over the network via SMB/CIFS (windows file shares) or anything that seems to move at high speeds.
What is happening to me is that around the time this happens, all network connectivity drops. This seems to begin happening after the last system/security update.

  • ME3600 packet loss problem - reboot to fix.

One of our ME3600 units has developed a problem where we would lose IPv6 Neighbours and OSPFv3 neighbours, followed by the device not passing MPLS traffic. IPv4 traffic suffering bad packet loss.
I discovered that devices attached to the Gigabit ports were receiving errored frames so the ME3600 seemed to be sending out bad frames.
rebooting the device would fix it for a while but it kept happening at regular intervals, usually when the box was carrying more ipv6 traffic.
We have upgraded to the latest firmware which did not help, and performed a full hardware replacement from Cisco only to find we are still seeing the same issue!
there was no configuration change that I could point as being a catalyst for the problem, the most recent thing was enabling ipv6 VRFs, but IPv6 is also carried in the global table while we move some services around.po
Has anyone else experienced similar problems with the ME3600?

This sounds very similar to a problem we have seen across multiple boxes.
I've not noticed whether OSPFv3 neighcors drop, however have seen MPLS stop forwarding and heavy v4 loss.  Control plane for v4 seems to stay up (ie v4 OSPF neighbors keep their adjacany) so routes still advertised etc.  Performing a shut / no shut of one of the core interfaces will generally result in a complete failure of the interfaces on that ASIC (the two 10G ports in our case) - can't ping adjacent devices after the no shut, but the GE ports still work.
10G ports are core facing on our boxes, and adjacent neighbors see increasing input errors when the issue occurs.
Issue has only been seen during peak traffic times.  Reboot fixes the problem.
Did you find any resolution?  We've been pointed at CSCui23725, and advised to use the command "platform acl egress-disable".  This appears to be working so far.

    Hi,
Here are some pre-RCU-run you can perform:
    1) Check if you service is up and running.
    2) Try to connect to the DB separately using a tool/IDE like SQL Developer, JDeveloper, Toad, etc.
    3) Try to run RCU from a different machine. May be there are some Port conflicts.

  • Packet errors with JDBC

    Hello all,
I have been grinding my teeth over this problem. We are getting SQLExceptions with "unexpected packet", "invalid packet lenght" (including the spelling-error), and "bad packet type". We have absolutely no clue whatsoever what might be causing this. Running on Oracle 10g, and driver version 10.2.0.3.0.
Has anyone ever run into these problems and can they give me the cause, and even the workaround??

We are using driver 11.1.07 with a patch for the "arguments > 7" dreaded bug (Oracle Metalink Note ID 736273.1) and still get this error, so don't waste your time thinking that a driver upgrade to 11.1.07 will help.
Also the error message is still misspelt in their message.properties ...

  • Catalyst 3524 - Capturing fragmented packets

    Greetings,
I have run into an interesting issue with a trunked connection to my ASA.
Scenario: ASA-5510 connected to a Catalyst 3524 switch via a dot1q trunk. There are approximately 12 vlans configured and passing traffic.
The ASA interface shows no errors; the Catalyst switch is incrementing runts fairly rapidly.
From what I have read this typically is a cabling or hardware issue. We changed ports and cables on the Catalyst switch to rule out that side. Both ASA and Switch are set to Full Duplex/ Speed 100.
From a troubleshooting perspective, I am limited on my packet captures due to the switch and/or my NIC hardware discarding 'bad' packets. I don't have access to a hardware packet capturing device or a NIC with that capability.
To anyone's knowledge, is there a way to capture the packets being dropped at the switch port? I have a port monitor set up and have disabled "checksum offloading" on my NIC; so far that is the best I have come up with.
It looks like the switch will increment the runts counter, but not log any of that info.
I am eliminating any other port issues I see on the switch, but that hasn't made a difference so far.
My apologies for the long post, but I do appreciate your patience and expertise!
    Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the info - I will be able to use that for future troubleshooting!
I have resolved the incrementing runts issue with an IOS upgrade on the switch (to current level for the Cat 3524).
After the upgrade, the counters no longer increment. I was hoping this would be the case; we were just waiting for a maintenance window to complete the upgrade.
    Thanks again!
