Bash CDE file manager problem

I have the following problem:
I use the CDE and the bash shell. If I start a bash terminal from the file manager file menu, the environment variables are not set correctly. The entries made in the file /etc/profile are just ignored.
However, the following works correctly:
-if I start the bash terminal from the CDE toolbar
or
-if I use the bourne shell (both variants file manager and CDE toolbar work)
It seems that the file manager is not receiving the correct environment information from the CDE.
Thanks for any help.

  • CDE File Manager - dtfile

Ive installed Solaris8 for x86 on a PIII 450MHZ PC.
Everything seems to run fine except for the file manager.
When the file manager in CDE is used CPU usage goes to 100% the file list doesnt appear and the system is very sluggish. To recover I have to do a ps -e | grep dtfile and kill those processes, usually 2 or 3. The file manager
is useless so far. Are there any patches ( Ive installed the latest patch cluster) that specifically alleviate this problem or is it a configuration issue.

  • Gnome file manager problem

lately I've noticed that in the Gnome file manager when I go to a directory with images in it, 4 will show up and all the rest don't and the cursor is in a waiting mode that it can't get out of.
What causes this and how can it correct it?
    Last edited by vinoman2 (2009-11-07 15:00:38)

Thanks, I later rebooted and that fixed the problem. It was only in one directory.
I just moved a image to a folder and it did it again. I ran nautilus in the terminal and it only opened nautilus.
Is this a bug in Gnome? It seems to happen every time I want to move an image into a folder.
Is there a way to fix this?

  • Audacious File Manager Problem

    Hi there,
Audacious file manager thinks himself. Opened automatic file Audacious.
    How to solve ?
    Thanks.

I can make a pretty good guess what the problem is.  Some program is blindly picking Audacious as the default MIME handler for inode/directory, most likely because it starts with "A".  Lots has already been said about this issue (try searching Google for "audacious file manager").  For now, you have to set the default MIME handler to something else manually.  See: http://redmine.audacious-media-player.o … 102#note-3

  • CDE File Manager - associated file

I am not familiar with Solaris.
Now I have SunOS 5.8, and login into CDE (common desktop environment).
I run File Manager, then I can see iconic pictures at the left.
If I double-click a file, it will open the related application.
The action taken when you open an icon depends on the type of icon.
For example, opening a data file usually starts the Text Editor, opening a HTML file starts the Netscape.
It is just like associated file at File Explorer of Windows 2000.
How does it work? Can I change the associated file?
    Regards,
    Vicky

  • File Manager problem

I am trying to assist my mate uploading documents onto his site. He has been set up with Dreamweaver and is more hopeless than I am. It is a case of the blind leading the blind.
I am able to upload and overwrite files using his legacy file manager but cannot do so using his file manager.
After opening file management I then open on web root and then hit go. I am then supposed to be able to click on the upload button in order to be able to browse in order to select the file I want. I am then supposed to be able to upload it. But nothing at all happens when I first hit upload in order for me to be able to browse.
As I have said, this does not happen with legacy file manager, where it allows me to hit upload files and then allows me to browse and then upload without delay.
I contacted the bloke who installed the system and he is unsure as to why it happens. He said it could be something to do with my browser popup settings, but they are okay. I would be very grateful for advice.

I'm not sure which one he's using. I'm at my own computer at the moment and my mate's not around. I'll find out asap. Sorry my question was confusing. I am very much a layman.

  • File manager problem - weird .tmp folder - PLEASE ...

Every time I try to copy any type of file to my PC using File Manager, the file will not transfer and instead it creates a .tmp folder with a file inside PhoneFiles.
    Has anyone also encountered this?

    Hi,
This post was started in april. Did any one found the solution for this? PC suite just doesnt allow to copy files directly from the Nokia file manager to PC. It creates the .tmp folder, with a 'PhoneFiles' named file in it. I just upgraded to Nokia pc suite 6.83.14.1.
    Phone model: Nokia 6630
    Phone firmware: Never updated
    PC suite ver: 6.83.14.1
OS ver: Win XP prof with SP2
It will be very helpfull if somebody knows a solution for this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • CDE Window Manager  configuration problem (Sol 8)

    Hi
I have a strange problem with CDE. After having a proper PC instalation done, as I log in the CDE I get black background and only 2 windows ( a kind of help window and the File Manager) The windows don't have title bars, cannot be moved ot whatever. Now, I seems to me that the window manager failed to start. Since I'm new to Solaris, can anybody give me a hint where I can find the configuration scripts and error logs.
    Thanks
    Val

if it were me I'd check /var/dt/Xerrors (Xservers log file)
$HOME/.dt/errorlog & startlogs for clues ... this is where CDE would log
    problems.
However you mentioned PC so I'll assume you are using ReflectionsX,
    Exceed
or similar, all come with a log file and trace utility via the Xconfig
    screen
which maybe worth your while looking into ?
As to the window manager failing to start .... the process is called
    dtlogin
and on the Solaris server you should see one parent process + 1 child per
remote display if things are working correctly.
Gotcha's : most likely problems are caused by either Fonts - check PC
Xemulation log files or hostname resolution problems.

  • Using bash as your file manager?

    Hello,
My belief is that all file managers suck. There are no exceptions to this. So, for the past few months, I've been sourcing a file with a bunch of tricks I've invented / found through browsing the web to make using just bash as a file manager much more convenient.
    Here's what I currently use:
    # fm v1.9.1 by Kiah Morante
    # A very simple file manager.
    # Depends on pycp/pymv, http://github.com/yannicklm/pycp and feh
    # 'source' this file in a BASH shell
showHidden=0 # Hidden files not shown
showDetails=0 # ls is replaced with ls -lh if showDetails is 1
shopt -s autocd # cd to a dir just by typing its name
    PROMPT_COMMAND='[[ ${__new_wd:=$PWD} != $PWD ]] && list; __new_wd=$PWD' # ls after cding

Actually, I found this to be one of the best advantages of using bash is that it forces a user to think about file organization and making useful naming schemes for files.
For example, instead of having 1000+ media files in one directory I subcategorize theme by genre or whatever, and then probably subcategorize them again.
Then I usually rename the files to something meaningful, like if I have 50 pictures of my kids birthday, just do a for each loop on the directory and rename all the files donovan_birthdayX.jpg where X is an integer incrementation.
essentially. just don't "have files cluttered all throughout you hard drive and folders all over". and your life will be much happier regardless of how you manage your files.

  • Problem with File Management in InDesign CS4 on Win 7 64-bit Machine

I have Adobe CS4 and just today have encountered a new problem for which I have no solution. When I open InDesign CS4 and choose the Open File menu, and then attempt to change the way the menu diplays items (e.g., Details rather than Small Icons, ec.), the program crashes and I get the "Adobe InDesign CS4 has stopped working" error message. I first encountered this after attempting to open a folder containing InDesign CS file that I need to open and update. In *that* case, the program crashes as soon as I open that folder (from within InDesign). What I have done so far to solve the problem: I tried using Bridge to browse to the problem folder and open the files from there. Bridge does not crash when I open the folder, and I am able to open any file in the folder *from Bridge* into InDesign CS4. However, when I attempt to, for example, export text from the file, while it does not crash when the window (where I get to specify the name of the exported file and change its location [if I wish]) opens, when I attempt to change how the file menu is displayed (cf. my comment above), the program crashes. *However*, if I simply export the file to any folder other than the one the opening of which crashes the program, too, everything is fine. So the problem seems to afflict the one folder, and any attempt, in any folder, to change how the folder's contents are displayed in what amounts to InDesign's use of the Windows file manager function. Any thoughts would be greatly apprecatd.
    potterj

    Dear Peter,
This is me (PottsJazz) under my (foolishly misplaced) original username (potterjazz) here on Adobe Fora. For various reasons, I decided to do a ground-up reinstallation of Windows 7 64-bit and Adobe CS4 and, initially, the ability to specify the way folders are displayed from within InDesign's own File Manager worked as it should. However, at some point as I went along installing all the software packages I use (Office 2010, Firefox, WordPerfect, some file converters, DVD/CD burning software, iTunes, etc.) the problem reemerged. I think it is probably a glitch with Windows 7 64-bit and one of my programs, but it is definitely not CS4's fault. I just have to create folders, specify folder display styles, etc., from outside CS4 and then maneuver within its programs to the folders and file locations from inside. It's a small price to pay for not spending days reinstalling software and testing testing testing. I'll let you know if I ever get a solution.

  • Having problem uploading files with file manager

When i use file manager and try to select a file from desktop then desktop disappears quickly so you can't even select the file you want.  I'm using firefox 25 and i thought it was that so i deleted firefox and reinstalled firefaox and get the same problem.
It tried with safari and it works ok.  Any ideas on how to fix this?  Its really annoying.

Well, since you didn't mention exactly what the problem is, I have to assume you have not set up your website definition properties correctly. There are plenty of good step by step instructions in the help files for setting up your website definition.

  • E62 file manager & memory problem

    Hello
I have an E62 from cingular, with a 2-gig extended memory.
I have a problem with invisible data -- mostly email messages -- that are using up all but 80 mb of the phone memory.
It appears I mucked things up by uninstalling blackberry connect and then reinstalling it to the 2gig extended memory card. There are still messages somewhere on the phone memory but I cannot access them. There are some other things too, but absolutely no data shows up in folders through file manager. It's as if all files are empty, this is true for both phone memory and the extended memory and has been since I got the phone -- it didn't raise any questions for me because I didn't quite understand the OS and I had not yet added much stuff to the phone then. But it seems to me that stuff ought to be visible. For example, I had created some audio files with the recorder. They were visible through the recorder software, but they did not turn up in file manager. So I'm wondering if that program even works.
I would like to avoid resetting the phone completely, but if that is the only way to get rid of this invisible data, or to get file manager to work properly, I guess I'll have to do that. Has anyone ever had this problem? Suggestions?

Try using the Y-Browser to access these files:
    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Y-Browser_for_S60_3rd_Edition.php
You would need to set the certificate check in the app-manager to not to validate the certificate to install this.
