Bash_profile problems, gcc/make/xcode tools problems

I've been encountering several weird problems with Leopard lately. I need to do some command line compiling and have been running into issues. I first installed Xcode tools to get gcc, make etc. However, the Xcode tools seemingly failed to modify bash_profile, as the Xcode tools directory is not included in the PATH.
g-mac:~ lindec$ PATH=$PATH\:/Xcode2.5/usr/bin ; export PATH
Fixes the issue with gcc here. However, I then installed MacPorts, and MacPorts apparently fails to modify bash_profile as well, as the "port" command will fail unless I modify the PATH by hand to include the MacPorts directory. This at least allowed me access to the "port" command. However, now MacPorts cannot compile anything because it claims make is missing! Here is the output:
g-mac:~ lindec$ port install py-mysql
---> Building zlib with target all
Error: Target org.macports.build returned: shell command " cd "/opt/local/var/macports/build/opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_archiverszlib/work/zlib-1.2.3" && make all " returned error 127
Command output: sh: make: command not found
Error: The following dependencies failed to build: mysql5 openssl zlib python24 gettext expat libiconv gperf
Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.
What the heck is going on here??? I know this post could also be made on the MacPorts site, however I thought it prudent to be put here because I want to know why installations that are supposed to be setting PATH are not doing it and if that is causing my problem. Also, how do I permanently modify my bash_profile on Leopard so I dont have to keep reminding bash whenever I start a new terminal session.

A disclaimer - I am EXTREMELY new to programming and was simply trying to create a C++ Hello World program in Eclipse and was getting an error which I will not go into...
This error led me to search all kinds of posts regarding something that just might have something to do with this post. All the info I found indicated that the error was due to not having gcc, g++, and/or gmake installed.
I opened Terminal and tried to run commands like gcc --version or which gcc and got nothing or '-bash: gcc: command not found'.
The problem is from the finder, I can find 'gcc-4.0'. In addition 'gcc --version' does not work, but if I enter '/Developer/usr/bin/gcc --version' it works. It seems that /usr/bin (assuming we're talking about the same /usr/bin) is not the default path for me?
For reference, I've had XCode 3.0 installed for months, and the --version says I have gcc 4.0.1.
Please forgive me if I have no idea what you guys are talking about and I'm way off with this post!!

  • Uninstall XCode Tools 2.5

I wanted to see what XCode Tools 2.5 was all about so I installed it along with MacPorts 1.82 (which requires XCode Tools) for Tiger. After seeing that I am not a software developer, I went to uninstall XCode Tools 2.5 with the following instructions in the manual "open the terminal then type ($ sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall=devtools)then hit Return. I get a warning to be careful about using a "sudo" command, then told to enter my PW. At the prompt I try to type my Admin PW but nothing happens, can't type anything. How can I get this to work? Can I just drag the entire "Developer" folder to the trash? Even with the XCode Tools, I am only using 19gigs of my 55gig drive so the space that XCode Tools takes up is not a problem. Will uninstalling XCode Tools cause a problem for MacPorts? I know that installing certain open source free software occasionally requires that either XCode Tools or MacPorts or both be installed, that's why I am thinking to just leave it on my computer. Although, ideally, I would like to uninstall both XCode Tools + MacPorts. Please forgive me for the rambling question. I am fairly new to Mac so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks, Ken.

Please forgive me, I goofed. It should have been "uninstall-devtools" not "uninstall=devtools", the hyphen not the equal sign. I super magnified the instruction text, saw my error, began the uninstall, almost surgically, without my PW. It left the Developer folder with a small "Samples" folder in it so I put the whole thing in the trash, got all my space back, almost 3 gigs. I feel like such a fool wasting your time, but every challenge is a learning experience. I guess I won't worry about the MacPorts, perhaps it was uninstalled as well. Thanks again for all your help, Ken.

  • Within reason it would be better and more secure for user to have more latitude in Id and password security. We can make a tool so difficult that it loses its usefulness. the need to write down scores of passwords to make a control freak happy stinks

The balance between security and ease of use is way out of control with Apple. Where does Security end and Controlfreak begin I have a very secure password that I use on many really high security programs and applications where peoples lives, safety and finances are at risk. There has never ever been a problem because I have chosen the usernames and passords  carefully, I use them all the time so I don't forget them. If I wrote different ones down so that I could access them from different locations that would be a huge violation of security.
This policy is so extreme that it makes the tools that Apple makes available. I have used Apple as my music management system for years. This has become so impossible that I am going to have to convert to another system. This will cause me time and work. This is quite un-necessary. Control freaks are hard to deal with.I give up, I'm going to go away.

I have no idea what your issue is, but if you want to comment to Apple, use their feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Posting complaints here, and in particular threats to go to other products, where only we your fellow users will be likely to see them do no one any good. None of us here will really care if you decide that iTunes doesn't work for you and you have chosen to shift to some other product. That's you perogative as a consumer.
    Regards.

  • X11 and Xcode Tools

A number of people have posted problems with X11 not starting. I discovered that a normal installation of Leopard 5.4 including X11 results in X11 working normally. However, if you also install Xcode Tools from the second disk, X11 stops working; double-clicking it causes the normal startup animation, but that's it---it doesn't run. Reinstalling X11 from the first disk doesn't help.
The cure may be found at http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki ; download and install their X11-2.2.3.pkg, and all is fine again.
Note that this problem occurs only on a MacBook Air; my MacBook Pro never had any trouble.

  • Xcode Tools will not update under Mac OS X 10.7

After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7 on a new Mac Mini, I attempted to update my other software thru the App Store.  When I attempt to update Xcode I get the following message: "Xcode 4.0.2 requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.  Install the Xcode Tools version that supports Mac OS X 10.7 Lion."  I can find no update on App Store that will accomplish this task.  The one entry in App Store I can find for Xcode just attempts to install and produces the message above.  How do I get the lastest version?

I figured out what MAS was minute or two ago... after searching over and over at apple.com in the downloads section and finding more than 150 hits at one time, nothing for xcode AND download AND lion (and also substituting 10.7 instead of lion). None of the 150 hits dealt with xcode itself.
Another search for xcode (all by itself) came up with 4 items only talking about webobjects.
It wasn't until I finally went to the main apple page, clicked on Mac, at the bottom Developer -> Mac Program, then at the bottom, XCode 4 developer preview, then I finally found "View in Mac App Store" (so I found out what MAS was).
When I clicked the View link, Lion had to be told what app it should use to view the page!
My download is apparently done now, so I think I'll go install it.
What a chore! Had I been thinking, I could have just started up the app store from my dock! (I don't think I did that with Snow Leopard... which was another arduous project.) I rarely use the app store. I spend more time trying to figure out how to use what I've already got!
Do I need to uninstall my xcode 3.x first or will it just be replaced?
    Thanks for the reply.

  • XCode Tools  Ok to remove from Hard Disk?

    Hello,
In order to free us some room on my hard disk, I'm wondering if it's ok to remove the XCode Tools from the "Installers" folder (Applications/Installers/XCode Tools/)
As far as I can see, these tools have yet to be actually installed but it's difficult to be sure. I have no need of any code writing tools at this time.
    Any advice welcome.
    Cheers,
    Jeff
    eMac 1.25 GHz USB 2.0 1Gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Mac OS X does not require the Xcode tools to operate
    correctly.
    (20165)
    Thanks
It's a bit confusing to me as to whether the XCode Tools are ialready installed or have yet to be installed. I'm leaning towards "yet to be installed" since they are in the /Applications/Installers/ folder. I'd just like to be certain before I remove them.
    Cheers
    Jeff

  • Do you need to run mountain lion to access Xcode tools

I have a 5 year old MacBook Pro and would like to access Xcode tools.  However when I try to download the free version, my system does not recognize it.  Any suggestions?

You must use a version compatible with the version of OS X you are using. Try this one: Download.

  • How to delete Xcode Tools?

I just downloaded Xcode Tools.mpkg from the install disk. After reviewing it I realized I will never ever need this.
I think it created a folder named "Developer" in my Macintosh HD with a size of 1.55GB. Is this what I downloaded? Can I just trash the folder and that's it ? I don't want to mess up something...
    TIA

Ok I'm reading the uninstall instructions on the pdf.
Is it better tio uninstall from the system or the install disk?
    Thanks

  • How to Uninstall xcode Tools?

I installed Gimp, and was looking for X11, and assumed it was in the xcode tools package on the Apple OSX install disc.
So I installed the xcode tools, and got the 'successfully installed' notice. But then found out X11 is not in xcode tools!
Eventually I did find and install X11, and Gimp runs fine.
So now I want to uninstall the xcode tools cleanly.
    I won't be using them.
I read the instructions in the About xcode tools pdf, and tried the command in Terminal with this result:
    apples-mac-mini:~ colin$ % sudo perl/Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
-bash: fg: %: no such job
    apples-mac-mini:~ colin$ % sudo perl /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
-bash: fg: %: no such job
    apples-mac-mini:~ colin$
How do I get rid of the xcode tools cleanly?

Thanks JJ2: That got rid of 3GB of unwanted Developer Tools nicely!
It would be helpful to others if the 'About Dev Tools pdf'
clearly said that to run the command in terminal you should log out as user, and log back in as Apple (admin) before using terminal.
In addition, the text of the pdf has a percentage symbol at the start of the command line, which appears to be a typo, or plain wrong.
To prevent this happening to others; when referencing X11.app, it should be stated exactly how to find it on the DVD. People logically expect it to be in the xcode tools folder.
I eventually found it by inserting the Apple DVD, then typing X11.app into Spotlight.
Carlo: Have you got rid of your xcode tools yet?
    If not, do this:
Log out as User (Carlo) and log back in as apple (admin)
    Finder>Go>Utilities>Terminal.app
In the small black terminal screen type at the cursor:
    sudo /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
    and press enter
Give your Apple (admin) password (NB: You don't see the pw as you type), press enter, and that should cause the tools to be removed. It takes about a minute for the script to do the job, so wait for it to confirm.
    Enough geekery!
We just want to use the thing.

  • Can I make the tool icons any larger in PS CC 2014?

Can I make the tool icons any larger in PS CC 2014?  The icons are tiny.
    Thanks!

Yes indeed, and Photoshop CC 2014 is the only version with that option.
In Photoshop: Edit > Preferences > Experimental Features > check "Scale UI 200%", click OK, Restart Photoshop. (Windows only).

  • Make the tool option box visible?

How do you make the tool option box completely visible?  It is mostly below the bottom edge of my computer making it impossible to access the necessary commands.  I work on an Imac> I cannot even access the arrow at the lower left corner to make the box smaller.

Have you tried clicking on the Green Maximize button to fit pse 12 to your screen?

Ok, i found xarchiver. Although now another problem has arisen. I had a dual boot system, Ubuntu, and Arch, and i deleted the ubuntu partition, and then moved and resized the arch partition to fill the entire hard drive. Now however, i am trying to install GRUB2, and while running grub-install, it doesn't finish. I read in another forum that if it takes more than 1 minute to complete, the first sector is bad and i need to repair it. My question however is how would i check to see if it really is a bad sector, and how would i repair it if it is?
    EDIT:
I fixed it. It seems that the device.map was from grub legacy, so i deleted it, reinstalled grub2, and everything works perfectly.
However, it seems that i don't have a "update-grub" or "grub-update" command. No problem though. Probably just need to edit /etc/profile for $PATH

    Hi all,
I am attempting to install necessary perl modules to run a perl script. I need to use gcc as my compiler and believe I have an issue, also may have a (g)make issue as well. I will copy the output of two install failures, and then my current o conf setup. if someone could help me out I would sincerely appreciate it.

    Dear All,

The rtc command is used to set the real time (bios) clock. It should have no effect on the running clock.
as i configured the /etc/TIMEZONE, i couldnt run the rtc command and figured that it is for X86
what is the alternative on SPARC?There is no alternative. x86 has a tradition of running the BIOS clock in local time. The rtc program allows you to continue doing that, which is handy if you multi-boot with other operating systems that require that setting (such as windows). As such, the rtc clock needs to be reset when local time changes (usually associated with daylight saving or summer time). If you do not multi-boot with windows, you may wish to set the bios clock to UTC. It makes certain things easier.
SPARC systems do not multi-boot windows, and the onboard nvram clock always runs in UTC. So the rtc command is not needed.
The date output is +2 over the timezone taht i have specified

  • How to make spin tool default

Someone already posted an answer how to make the spin tool default here http://forums.adobe.com/message/1146944#1146944
but my problem is I have absolutely no idea whatsoever to run a script. I tried a few things but they didn't work. Can someone explain this to me as if you'd be explaining it to your grandma? Heck, just walk me through it step-by-step if possible.
I have a deadline in a few days and I'm creating a 3D PDF from a SketchUp model I created and exported into Acrobat 3D. Basically what I need to do is make Acrobat 3D orbit a lot better. I can't send it to the clients the way it is by default. It's a joke. By default it's actually REALLY BAD. I either need the Rotate button removed(which I don't think is possible) or make the spin button default.
On a side note, the camerarotate.js script Adobe provides is horrible... no pan? Come on! Coming from SketchUp where the orbit works so perfect, Acrobat 3D is painful to use at times.
    Thanks guys.

    Hello Szarky,
-Create a .txt file containing the following line:
    runtime.setCurrentTool( runtime.TOOL_NAME_SPIN );
You can change its extension to .js by renaming it (file extensions got to set visible therefore)
-Double click your 3D Annotation with the advanced editing tool (image below)
    -Click on edit content
-Attach the Javascript under default script by browsing the .js or .txt file you created
    I hope it helps, Chuck

  • Use gcc/g++ with Tools.h++ in Solaris 8

In Solaris 8, can I use gcc/g++ compiler to link a program with Tools.h++ library that is shipped with Sun CC compiler (Sun ONE studio 7).
    Thanks and regards,
    Luu Vo.

Sun C++ and g++ generate incompatible binary code. You cannot mix binaries from the two compilers in one program, not even using shared libraries.
For a detailed discussion of C++ binary compatibiltiy problems, see my paper "The Stability of the C++ ABI" at
