Basic archive space requirements question from NON DBA :)

I am a storage admin trying to get a better understanding of RMAN.
My question is for backuplevel.1 does RMAN require free space to write archive information or archive logs to to complete this backup? My DBA says
"no" after I requested that he clean up the archive directory which is 100% utilized. Am I incorrect?
I hope I have explained my question properly. I am new to RMAN and if anyone can point me to this answer either way in writing - that would be much appreciated!
Mike

I'm in agreeance with ORADBA, but something that comes to mind as well is that RMAN can be configured to use flash recovery area. Flash recovery area has an initilization setting that amounts to what ever space you will need in that area. The area can contain archivelogs, RMAN backups and other recovery files. Not only does the initialization space setting have to 'have enough space' for flash recovery, but also the physical space must be there. Cleaning up / controlling archive in Oracle can be fickle, and seeing it from DBA side, I'd say that if he can control it to stay within limits, he's doing well. Ta, David

  • Disk Space Required - Upgrade from 11.5.9 to 12

Just wondering, roughly, aside from the database, how much disk space should I require for a basic upgrade of Oracle Fins - release 11.5.9 to release 12?
Is release 12 just like 11i was - meaning, it installed all the apps, even though you used just a few?
    Thanks.

  • Month end closing question from a DBA

    Hi all,
I am a DBA not a functional setup person/Business Analyst; so excuse me if my question is not put in business terms.
We have an 11.5.10.2 that operates in US, Canada, Peru, China and Australia. Each of these have their own Set of Books. When the time comes to do month end closing, our finance people tell all incl our US and other countries branches to stop the following transactions on the system while month end closing is going on:
    •     Inventory
o     Pick, pack and ship for SO’s and Internal Req’s
o     Receiving of PO’s, Internal Req’s and OSP
    o     Subinventory transfers
    o     Consignment consumption
    o     Inventory adjustments
    •     WIP
    o     WIP moves and completions
    •     Accounts Receivable
    o     Cash applications
o     Invoicing of any shipping activity past cutoff o     Manual invoices and credits
    •     Accounts Payable
    o     Invoice entry and cancellation
o     Manual or batch payment runs
Question that I have is: how can month end closing be done where each of these countries could freeze these activities for their last day of month when last day of month starts obviously earlier in Australia and China compared to US, Canada and Peru? As of now, they all seem to follow the last day of the month procedure as the US. It takes about 7 hours for the whole process to run.
    All comments/suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,

As you can see, i cannot find similar situation. My database has data since 1998. Perhaps we are using different APPS versions, mine is 11.5.10.2

  • Basic questions from a new mozaic owner

I have some very basic questions about how to use the new mozaic 2G mp3 player. I bought the Mozaic because it has a speaker and sleep timer, but I'm finding it to be much harder to use than other mp3 players that I have had (Ipod shuffle, clix etc). This may reflect my failure to look in the right place but I have to say the "help" section isn't much help.
    Here goes:
. I download podcasts to listen to during my morning run. WMP provides an easy to find place in its program, "recently added," which allows the user to just work with those files. As near as I can tell, Creative makes you wade through all of your tracks. Is there some way to create a file to which "recently added" tracks, or specific tracks, can be dumped? How about automatic tagging of these added files?
    2. I have several thousand pictures on this hard dri've. Apparently, the Mozaic Centrale
Is going to copy all of them, which strikes me as a waste of space. Is there a way to shut this function off? I couldn't care less if a single photo was added to the centrale program (or whatever it's called). Is it really going to duplicate all of the jpg files?
    3. I have the Zen Stone plus speaker which has served me very well. I had similar problems working with whatever Zen was calling its media player and wound up using WMP instead. I"d like to take a run at using the dedicated Zen media player....
I apologize for the basic nature of these questions, but the answers weren't obvious to me from the materials I was able to locate.

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

  • I moved my year old emails to my Archive box to save iCloud space, when I did that my space used went from 450mb to 990mb?

I moved my year old emails to my Archive box to save iCloud space, when I did that my space used went from 450mb to 990mb? Like I doubled the amount in my inbox? only they definitely moved not copied from my inbox.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Solaris 10,oracle 10g question- can't connect with non-dba user

    Hi
I've installed the Oracle10g suite, enterprise edition ( 10.2.0.1). I've created a database called qa10g, which I can connect to as user 'oracle' once I export the ORACLE_SID and the ORACLE_HOME
    export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/10g2
    export ORACLE_SID=qa10g
then I type in the following at it puts me into sqlplus:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus system/system
so that works fine..now whan I try to log in as another user that isn't a member of the dba group, and I export the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables, I can't get in to the database using $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus system/system, I get the following errors:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
    Enter user-name:
BUT, when I put the connector string at the end, I can get in:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus system/system@qa10g
    Connected to:

so obviously, it is an enviromnet variable that isn't getting set properly, perhaps even ORACLE_SID=qa10g isn't working properly for the non-dba user ( in this case, the user is called ctronsys)
for the work I need to do on this databse, I need to have the user I select to be able to log into the database with sqlplus commands like the ones listed above, without the connector string added at the end..the SID gets exported first..
any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm a newbie to Oracle!

  • SQL tab not working in V2.1 EA1 for non-DBA users -- how to fix?

In v2.1 EA 1 the tab to show the SQL script (DDL) in the object browser is not working for non-DBA users. In the prior version, these users would see a message about DBMS_METADATA and then the message would indicate that an "internal generator" would be used to generate the DDL script. After that brief message the DDL would show up as expected. This doesn't seem to be the case in the newest version.
I issued the following two grants to a particular user which worked, but I am reluctant to issue the grants to "PUBLIC".
    SQL> grant execute on DBMS_METADATA to XXXXX;
    SQL> grant select_catalog_role to XXXXX;
    So, my questions are:
    1) Will the old functionality (that didn't require these privileges) be added to V2 at some point?
    2) What security implications are there for issueing the above grants to PUBLIC?
NOTE: After granting execute on the DBMS_METADATA package, it still didn't work. I left that grant in place and granted SELECT_CATAOG_ROLE, so I can't say for sure that the 1st grant was required.

An OEM account is separate from the database account. You need to use OEM UI to create an OEM account, however, for certain tasks to be done in the databases which OEM is monitoring they will also require separate database accounts within those databases. For example, to view the performance tab in OEM UI, a database account is required.
OEM only has two types of users, i.e. Super Administrator and Administrator, but don't go by the names. You can grant an OEM 'Administrator' account access to specific targets and what they can do within OEM, such as only viewing reports, targets, and so on. For access within a database, the user created need not be a DBA either.
    I hope you understand.

  • Migration Assistant Question (From 10.4.11 to 10.5.5)

I have a question regarding Migration Assistant in regards to upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I do backups of my entire internal HDD onto an external firewire drive using SuperDuper. I do not make a bootable drive, I backup to a disk image that can be mounted. My question is thus: when I upgrade and choose Erase and Install (if I want to), would I be able to use migration assistant on the disk image (once it is mounted) to move all my files over? Or would I have to make the external drive bootable in order to do this?
Any help you could give me would be great!
    Message was edited by: pr0digal

Migration Assistant only works with Firewire drives, not disc images stored on Firewire drives. You would be better off re-cloning your drive directly to the Firewire drive to make a bootable image.
However, you need not do that to upgrade on the same computer. You have two upgrade options: Upgrade Install or Archive and Install. The latter puts a fresh install of Leopard on the hard drive without erasing the drive, and it saves your old system in a Previous System Folder. There is an option to transfer your user account(s) and network preferences. I would recommend using this option. The procedure follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Interview questions for oracle dba

Hi I am trying to find teh interview questions for oracle dba .
What will be your answer to the following questions. Can somebody shed some light...
. What is the day to day duties of oracle dba?
    ·     Did you use online or off-line backups?
    ·     What version of Oracle were you running?
    ·     Haw many databases and what sizes?
    ·     If you have to advise a backup strategy for a new application, how would you approach it and what questions will you ask?
    ·     If a customer calls you about a hanging database session, what will you do to resolve it?
    ·     Compare Oracle to any other database that you know. Why would you prefer to work on one and not on the other?
    Thx
    KK

. What is the day to day duties of oracle dba?
I have got a checklist, designed for my daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly tasks. For example, in the daily checklist tasks, I check for the alert log file, competion and correction of my exports and operating system backups. DB space situation, Antivirus status, standby database status, space on disks, any rogue queries etc.
    · Did you use online or off-line backups?
    Both.
    · What version of Oracle were you running?
    8i(not any more), 9i, 10g
    · Haw many databases and what sizes?
8 databases, ranging from 1 TB to 10 GB. I have segregated them into OLTP production, testing, cm, and development and a Datawarehouse.
    · If you have to advise a backup strategy for a new application, how would you approach it and what questions will you ask?
How much they could afford to lose data or they want zero data loss and also I will get their requirements about down time and up time of database.
    · If a customer calls you about a hanging database session, what will you do to resolve it?
First I will identify it, then see to it what exactly it is doing, capture that situation and then either try to release the locks(if its a blocking or blocked session), or kill the session, if its hanging on a runaway query.
    · Compare Oracle to any other database that you know. Why would you prefer to work on one and not on the other?
Oracle passes the ACID rule with distinction as compared to the other databases. Moreover, the multiversion read consistency, recovery, flexibility and challenges of Oracle are matchless.
    Cheers

  • I Have a question from a Customer about ONLINE OPTION

    Hi all,
I have the below question from one of my customers, and non being a DB expert I am not able to answer or even where to find a documentation supporting the answer.
"We need to know how the "Online Option" to reorg indexes or tables is safe to be used, this way:
    - Alter table ... Move .. online;
    - Alter table ... Rebuild .. online;
to understand if the technique can be used to maintain the DB without stopping service to end users.
The DB is in 11gR2. I do not want notes or PDF's but just answers on:
    - It's Safe ? yes/No or Yes with some tricks, Best practices (which?)
    - Any known issues or bugs or patches to be applied (or Service Packs)"
I was planning to setup a Bug Review with my ACS Service Engineers but they would like a quick preliminary answer to the fist question before starting the full Bug Review.
In my understanding, the Online option is to reorg indexes and not tables... am I right?
Which can be a documentation page or community discussion or any additional link you can share ?
Or may be you just have a full answer :)
    Thank you
    Kind regards
    Chiara
Edited by: Chiara Scarafiotti on Jun 7, 2013 2:35 AM

Rebuilding an index online will lock the base table at the start and end of the rebuild, this can cause issues if there are active transactions see http://richardfoote.wordpress.com/2008/02/11/index-create-and-rebuild-locking-improvements-in-11g-ch-ch-ch-changes/
alter table move online will make any associated indexes unusable and these will need to be rebuilt after the table is moved.
    Two other options:-
for indexes a coalesce is generally faster and requires less space.
For everything dbms_redefinition has more options and is less intrusive at the expense of being more complex.
Also probably the biggest risk is you move tables rebuild indexes charge your customer for all this work and it fails to improve anything (or actually makes things worse)

  • Calendar Server attachment space requirements and/or quotas?

We're preparing to upgrade/migrate from Calendar 5.1.1 to Calendar 6.3, and the attachment feature has started to make me nervous, because I can see some of our users potentially over-using this particular feature. So, the first question would be what kind of space requirements are recommended for calendar attachments. Basically, I'd like to get a feel for how much users at other sites actually use attachments, to see what kind of space we should have available for them.
The second question is whether or not there is a quota mechanism for calendar attachments, to keep users from going overboard, or at least forcing them to periodically clean house.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

    sclawson12 wrote:
I have all of my calendar 6.3 data components on separate ZFS file systems in a Zpool.
Separating them out is pretty much what I've done, so that if one gets extraordinarily full, it won't impact the rest while we add some space.
I have around 6500 calendars with a 500 MB main database with ~700,000 entries. Attachments store
is not using much, but mostly because users probably haven't noticed they can do it in UWC I suspect. Most
of the users who do do it would be users that use Outlook connector. We have about 67000 calendars (a mix of users, courses & resources) with the csdb dir taking up about 3GB. I imagine initial usage of attachments will be relatively low, but I have this nagging fear that people will be scheduling the next meeting of their student organization, and have the bright idea of attaching a 3GB DVD image of video from their last get-together. ;)
