Basic project management question

HI,
In the "Projects and Events" top level of the Libraries pane, there is a pre made "folder" called Projects. The icon is a purple square with a star. This is identical to all the others which I assume are Events. I I click on an "Event" all the clips are revealed in the pane to the right. But if I click on the tiny trinagle, nothing is revealed. I don't understand this.
Now my real question: If I click on the triangle for the pre made Projects fodler, it reveals 4 collections called: Complete, Incomplete etc. Also their icons look like a strange blue page. I made these and they seem to have come from the previous verions of FCP X. When I reveal the contents of Incomplete, what I want to do is move a project, by dragging, to the Complete collection. Instead of moving it though, it copies it. The only way to get rid of the project in the Incomplete collection is by moving it to the trash, but this really does delete it everywhere!
I find the new version very hard to understand. All I want is to group project according to their being complete or not, or some other catagory, but I canno figure it out.

Because the changes to the 10.1 library model were so substantial there has been a huge amount of info on updating and they way this model affects organization put out by Apple and many training organizations.
Here is a very good document by Apple; it gets right into the files created by updating. There are other docs by Apple as well as articles and free video tutorials by trainers easily found by a search.
The short answer is events live in libraries and projects live in events. Left to its own devices, the first time 10.1 is launched it will update the projects and events it sees on connected drives and make a library for each drive. The disclosure triangles reveal collections. If there are no collections, nothing will show when opened.

I need an expert advice on setting up timelines for establishing an Oracle Apps Production environment. We are implementing Oracle HR & Payroll at an organization.
Our system architecture is a 2-node application tier and 2-node DB tier (RAC). RAC is configured by another party and we only have to prepare the application tier (2 nodes)
We would be installing Oracle Apps R11i (11.5.10) with jserv load balancing on the 2-nodes
Can anyone suggest how much time this should take to install/configure & patching of the application tier (on 2 nodes)?

XRPM basic project manager roles for 4.0

Hello,
Does anyone know what the basic roles in XRPM would be appropriate for baseline non-technical project manager??? There are a few out of the box that look like they allow way to much, but we would like to stay as close to out of the box that we can as far as roles are concerned.

The basic roles you need to assign in the backend are:
SAP_XRPM_USER
SAP_XRPM_PROJECTMANAGER
SAP_CPR_USER
SAP_CFX_USER
The last two roles are needed if you are planning to use C-Projects and C-Folders.
These roles will give you the access to manage projects in the Portal.
In the Portal you will need to assign the role:
Project Manager.
I suggest you discuss which iviews are to be used by the PM and create a copy of the above role with only the access needed.

Basic colour management questions

Hi,
I am a biology PhD student and I am reasonably proficient in using computers for everything except when it comes to colour management. I frequently encounter people at Uni who struggle when working on posters etc. because the colours do not print the way they looked on their monitors. I try to explain that most computer monitors are not calibrated correctly.
Anyway, I have my monitor calibrated, the area where I run into trouble is when assigning colour profiles. For example, I need to scan some photos using a flat bed scanner, and I don't know which colour profile to assign it. Should I assign it the calibrated profile that I created or will this only work on my computer. I need to be able to share these images and know that they will look the same on other computers.
I also don't understand what is meant by converting to a working space. I have an Apple PDF about Tiger colour management but it is a bit too technical for me.
Basically I was hoping someone could explain the basics to me or point me towards a good article.
One last question, the scanner I use is a very old UMAX Astra 2100U scanner that does not work in OS X. I have to boot up in Windows and scan there then go back to OS X. Am I likely to run into problems taking the picture between the two OSes?

Scanner & camera profiles have two main purposes AFAICT: in colour-managed environments where the original file is sent to a printer or displayed on a monitor, the profile will enable the output to be adjusted for the idiosyncracies of the imaging device; and when opening a file for editing, the device profile will (in theory at least) allow a more accurate conversion to the program’s working space.

Yes, there are various CMYK profiles as well: some are for particular printers, while others (like SWOP, Standard Web Offset Printing) attempt to encapsulate typical commercial printing environments. I work in prepress, where CMYK is always the eventual destination—but a printer that uses six or more colours of ink can often represent a larger portion of the RGB gamut than a four-colour press can, for example producing more vivid blues than would be possible in CMYK.
Another issue is that CMYK images that have been optimized for prepress often look somewhat dull or ‘washed out’ on a monitor, especially one that has a high colour temperature (as is typical outside a prepress environment). If the image been tagged with an appropriate CMYK profile, the display may be able to compensate to some extent, but conversion from RGB to CMYK very frequently results in some ‘shoehorning’ of a wide range of colours into a narrower one.

Project manager question

I'm doing multicam work, with lots of footage.
PPro seems to be bogging down my system. Therefore, i've decided to export my multicam sequences into separate projects.
My question is, if i grab the Main project, and the multicam pre-comp, does premiere know intelligently re-link all existing footage, and keep the project bin in tact, or does Premiere re conform files, and duplicate all the footage?
Also, while we're on the subject, the option to check "Rename Media Files to Match Clip names" has me confused.

When your orginal footage is called e.g. clip1, clip 2, clip3 etc and the same clips in the project window you renamed to e.g. flowers, trees, plains.
If you check that option the original footage is renamed to flowers, trees etc.

RGB blends "light" to generate colors. CMYK blends "inks". Starting with RGB and light.....pure white blends high levels of red, green and blue wavelengths in approximate equal amounts, which we perceive as white. In Photoshop parlance, using 8-bit, this translates to 255R, 255G, 255B. When we see an object, we are actually seeing the light that reflects from that object, not the object itself. So, a bright white object reflects most of the visible light spectrum and reaches our eye, which the brain interprets to be white. A black object "absorbs" light so nothing is reflected to the eye.
To print, you need inks on paper, not light. If you were to use red, green and blue inks, you'd have a big problem printing colors like yellow. So, they devised the subtractive color process (RGB is additive, ie, adding all three lights together gives you white). They took the opposite colors of Red, green and blue, which are Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. In theory, you should be able to create the same spectrum of colors with the CMY subtractive colors that you can with the RGB additive colors, but in practice, that is not the case, for at least two reasons. The CMY inks are not pure and as intense as the RGB primaries, and second, you have to apply these inks to paper, which drastically limits dynamic range. To deal with the ink purity problem, (and to give better type), they add Black to the CMY mix, for four inks....Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. To get white, you rely on the paper alone, without any ink. In theory, pure black would be either 100C, 100M, 100Y, or it could be 100K (black), or it could be 100% each of CMYK. But, these three do not give the same results, due to ink purity, ink limits, paper, process, etc.

In the CMYK world, orange is a mixture of Yellow and Magenta inks, with more yellow than magenta. For example, 52M, 94Y gives a fairly vibrant orange. Again, hue, saturation and brightness are dictated by the mix percentages, paper, ink limits, ink purity, etc. In the RGB world, this same color is defined as 255R, 143G, 33B (depending on the "flavor" (color spaces) of RGB and CMYK you are using. There is a relationship between RGB and CMYK, and this example is no exception. When red is maxed out at 255, cyan is the opposite, in this case zero. In this orange color, Green is 143, near the middle of the range, and so is its opposite, Magenta, which is near the middle of its range, at 52. Blue is 33, at the very low end of its range, and its opposite, Yellow, is near the top of its range at 94. Since this is a bright color, there is no black ink used at all. If it were a darker orange, there would probably be some black in as well.
Some colors can be created in RGB that cannot be duplicated in CMYK. The opposite is also usually true, that there are colors in CMYK that cannot be duplicated in RGB (depending on the color space you use). If your intended output is a monitor, the internet, email, or a printer that needs "light" you would generally use RGB. If the intent is to "print" the job, on a press, inkjet, laser, etc, then CMYK is generally used. Even if you send an RGB file to your inkjet, the printer driver translates the RGB colors to CMYK in the background before output. Most, if not all, printers use CMYK subtractive inks for printing, These can generate a large portion of the printable spectrum. Some printers add light cyan and light magenta inks, or even red, green, blue, orange, and other colors to help extend the color gamut of the printer so it can achieve colors that would be "out of gamut" using CMYK alone.
Another difference is that CMYK is a four color process, unlike RGB, which is three color. A given color has only ONE definition when defined in RGB, HSB, L*a*b*, or other 3 component color schemes. With CMYK, many colors can be created using different mixes of CMYK, which adds complexity, but also offers opportunities and flexibility, especially on press.
Like I said at the beginning, this is a very deep and complex subject, and this only touches on the basics.

Basic Project - media question

I think that I have this straight; but would like to confirm.
1) when capturing media from DV tape, those media must be associated with a Project
2) those captured media, however, can still be used (referenced) by any other Project
3) if I want to capture more media for an old Project, I open that Project first?

Project Management Roadblock with mac

I love my mac! I always have loved my macs. I mainly used my macs for personal which is mostly multimedia world.
For the past 6 months I have kicked my work provided Dell to the curb and am using my mac for everything business related with some snags (most are overcome with work arounds).
After using my mac in the business world I have come to the conclusion Apple needs to come out with an Office of there own.
Sure, the skimpy Microsoft Office is nice (slow) but nice for word, excel and powerpoint but what about the other pieces of Microsoft Office that are not included like Visio and Project. These are key applications that I have not found a very good substitute.
I have tried replacing Project with:
OmniPlan 1.1
ConceptDraw Project 3
FastTrack Project 9
Project X
Merlin 2
Daylite3
All of which are nice for basic project management but some are clumsy, some are nice but not advanced enough.
My current project is to migrate the networks at branches all across the world.
I am given the DayOne date for each branch. DayOne is defined as the day the customers/users come into the office and are using the new network for the very first time. So, its the end date of each milestone.
So working backwards from DayOne (always a Monday)
Task1: 3days prior to DayOne, Begin Migration (Task Length: Friday at 6pm there local time until 5am Monday there local time at the latest)
Task2: 5days prior to DayOne, Send out a FINAL cadence (Task Length: 30minutes and always on a Wednesday at 4pm eastern time)
Task3: 7days prior to DayOne, Verification that everything is set (Task Details: 1hour and always on a Monday at 1pm-2pm eastern time)
Task4: 17days prior to DayOne, Requests are submitted (Task Details: Request/Change Controls are submitted and always on a Friday at 9am est for 1hour)
Task5: 30days prior to Dayone, Submit cadenance is sent to all teams (Task Details: Helps everyone get on same page, done at 3pm est for 30min on Mondays)
Task6: 30days prior to Dayone, Red Team Review of cadenance (Task Details: Review cadenance with all teams, North America version done at 11am every Monday 30+days prior to dayone, Europe version done 30+ days prior to dayone on Thursdays at 8am est)
Task7: 60+days prior to Dayone, Draft Cadenance is emailed (Task Details: Draft cadenance is sent out every Tuesday 60+days out from dayone at 3pm est for 2hours)
A TRUE Project Management software I should be able to create the tasks above and change the DayOne date (as I received these changes) and all Tasks should shift accordingly and they do not (without any limitation). There should also be the possibility to turn on/off the today date restriction (in the case I would like to track tasks that happened in the past).
I would love to see Apple create an Office suite that does Office right. No limits... shoot for Pluto.

For Project Management, take a look at the package iTaskX - at first glance it looks promising - it includes effective task linking like end-to-start, start-to-start etc., and it seems intuitive (at least at my first glimpse). Sequential Appointments for Project Management

Is there a way to create a sequence of appointments that are related to one another. I would like to be able to move one appointment and have other related appointments move by the same amount of time. Ultimately this would allow a critical path of appointments to be scheduled allowing iCal to be used as a basic project management tool.

I'm pretty sure this is well beyond iCal's mediocre capabilities. However, you might be able to write an Automator script or an AppleScript to do this for you. You would probably have to use a tag in the notes section of your events to do this.

i have a question about an e learning course which SAP offers-

It's an e learning course for 20 hours, below are my questions-
Since its an e-learning course, is it to be completed in a specified time (within 2-3 days) or we can have access to it throughout the year but duration of course is 20 hrs
What kind of documentation is provided to me as part of this course.

1. C_TPLM22_05 - SAP Certified Solution Consultant PLM - Project Management with SAP ERP 2005
It includes SAP PLM 235 course material along with PLM 200, 210 220, 230,
2. C_TPLM22_60 - SAP Certified Application Associate - Project Management with SAP ERP 6.0
It is not including the PLM 235 course.
This is the basic difference between it. IN Certification there are 6 -7 areas , in each of them you have to score more than 70 % , there many few multiple answer questions as well. Finally over score will come it should be higher than 70 %. So, I ideally weight all the topics equally,

Basic flowcharting/project-management app?

As a small business owner, I'm discovering that lists are just not enough to help me track my deliverables, deadlines, and dependencies.
I'd love an app that graphically displays my short- and medium-term goals and sub-tasks - basically a very scaled down version of MS Project.
The main contender I've found so far is Pagico - I'm trying out the free version. Pagico's flowchart functionality, while much better than nothing, seems limited. I don't think it manages dependencies, and it seems to look ahead only one month.
What other low end flowchart and project management apps exist for the Mac? Surely there must be something between Pagico's $20 price point and the professional $150+ project management tools?

If you happen to use Microsoft Office 2004, the Project Manager in Entourage is actually quite good. I started using it a few weeks ago.
There are a bunch of open source web based project managers that you could setup pretty easily on your system as well. That with the use of MAMP, you could easily setup something up for free in no time.

Is there a certification from SAP on Project Managemnt? NOT Product Lifecylce Mngmt(PLM)

Overview
The PMI (Project Management Institute) has three levels of certification, starting with the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) which is the basic level and is intended as certification for project team members. The PMP (Project Management Professional) is the second, higher level of project management and considered the standard of all PM certifications. Individuals who have passed the PMP certification test successfully and have met the PMI requirements for documenting their professional experience are entitled to use the abbreviation PMP with their names. A new certification, PgMP (Program Management Professional) has been introduced by the PMI in late 2007, for Program Managers.

A high school diploma is required to be certified. A Project Management Professional has also met specific education and experience requirements, has agreed to adhere to a code of professional conduct, and has passed an examination designed to objectively assess and measure project management knowledge. In addition, a PMP must satisfy continuing certification requirements (through professional development) or lose the certification.
Requirements include a candidate to have completed a high school degree or equivalent, performed 7,500 hours in a lead role directing tasks, performed tasks associated with being a Project Manager over a period of 60 months within the past 8 years, and completed 35 hours of education specific to Project Management and aligned with PMI methodologies. Persons possessing a bachelor's degree only require 4,500 hours leading and 36 months of experience.
The candidate is also required to pass a test to demonstrate his or her knowledge of Project Management. The test consists of 200 multiple-choice questions.
Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements for the PMP certification can apply for the Certified Associate in Project Management or CAPM examination.
Examination process
After a candidate's application is approved by PMI, he or she may schedule an examination at any of a large number of Prometric testing centers. A variety of times are available, including weekends and after "normal working hours." The examination is a multiple choice test, which can be taken either on a computer or in written form. Candidates must answer 200 questions in 4 hours (though 25 serve as trial questions and do not count toward the final score. Candidates will not know which ones are dummy when taking the exam - implies that candidate has to answer 200 questions to the best of their ability) and must have a success rate of at least 60.5% (106 out of 175 questions).
CCR cycle
The PMP status is granted for a period of three years (CCR Cycle, beginning January 1 after the exam). During this time, PMPs have to collect 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) to maintain their professional accreditation.

Oracle Project Analytics - Project Manager Security Implementation

Has anyone implemented a security scenario for Project Managers, such that they can only see the information associated to their projects when using EBS as the source? If so,
- How did you identify the relationship between project managers and their projects? Did you use an initialization block and pull this information in from EBS?
- Where did you define the security/filtering configuration so that they were limited on what they could see?
- Did you create a custom responsibility for 'Project Managers' and have them access a set of Project Manager dashboard/reports that followed the Project Manager security model?

Thanks for the great info and reply. This makes complete sense to me, but I just want to make sure I am clear on a couple points:

You mean use an init block to pull the users employee id and store it in a session variable correct? The session variable will then be used later as part of the filter criteria.

To implement the step above, would you follow theses steps:
1. Go to Manage->Security
2. Under Groups, select the group planned to be utilized for this filter (in this case I double clicked the Project Manager group).
3. I then Click permissions button for this group
4. Go to the Filters tab of the window that pops up
5. Add a filter, go to BMM tab and select the Project dimension and then define a filter for Proj Mgr Id = nqsession.employeeid

This is a good point, but a few more questions here - There are a number of Project related groups (see below) in the out of box Oracle BI Apps RPD and all of them essentially roll up to the super group 'Operating Unit Org-based Security'. Is there a best practice or preferred approach for utilizing these groups as they related to Oracle EBS v12? Is there any good documentation out there to see what the intended use and setup is for these groups? Do all of these groups relate back to an EBS Responsibility? I have read through the OBIA Security Configuration document and basically all it says is to enable the operating unit org initilization block and thats all .. not really all that helpful.
