Basic schema usage question
I have an application, called APP and I have two users USER1 and USER2. I create a Role called APP_USER. I assign USER1 and USER2 to the APP_USER Role.
I log into oracle using APP and create all of the tables/views/stored procedures, etc. I grant SELECT permissions to all of the tables in my APP schema to the APP_USER role.
I then log into Oracle using USER1. In order to select data from my APP do I always have to do a 'Select * from APP.tablename' or is there some automatic way to say that when I log in as USER1, I already know about all of the tables in the APP schema and I simply enter 'Select * from tablename' (without the APP. used).
If there is a way to automatically know that using tablename means to look in the APP schema we would like to know what that is. Since our application is dynamically creating and dropping tables along the way, we would like to have some way for this to happen automatically so that USER1 and USER2 (or the role APP_USER) is always aware of the changes to the APP schema.
We figure there has to be an easy and dynamic way that this occurs in oracle, but we can't seem to find any specific documentation on how this would happen.
You can use either Views or synonms. For synonyms, you can create synonyms for the tables in the APP schema. These can either be public synonyms - meaning you do it once for all users, or they are private synonyms - meaning you define it for each user. With views, you can create the view in each user account. You can also modify the view definition when the tables change underneath without having to change the queries.
Not sure why you are creating and destroying so many tables - you may want to investigate the use of temporary tables. Nevertheless, to keep your synonyms and tables in synch, you will need to issue the appropriate calls to create and drop the synonyms when you are creating and dropping the tables.

What Mac should I get for basic Photoshop usage?
I'm hoping to tap into the vast resources/opinions here.
I'm planning to get a Mac for my office. It will be use primarily for basic Photoshop usage. Maybe making some movies from iPhoto. The other usage would be normal ones like web surfing.
Please suggest a desktop Mac first, and a laptop Mac 2nd.
Which Mac model would be most cost-effective and doesn't need upgrading every year?
Thanks a lot!
MavisMavis, the answer to your question really depends on what you mean by 'basic' Photoshop use.
Bearing in mind that Photoshop has been used by professionals in graphics and design houses for many years, typically working on hardware that is substantially less powerfull than a Mac mini, there is no reason to beleieve that even the entry-level Mac can't sucessfully be used for this kind of work, and those who suggest otherwise simply haven't tried it. However, there are some things that you need to keep in mind when using this software: the first is that Photoshop runs better the more memory you have, the second is that Photoshop files can require large amounts of storage, and the third is that the most recent version tends to place heavy demand on the processor - meaning that the faster the processor the better it runs.
Thus, any Mac you buy for Photoshop use should ideally be equipped with 1Gb RAM rather than any less. You should also consider getting either the largest internal hard drive you can, or an external firewire drive for extra file storage.
A Mac mini with 1.42GHz processor and a 1Gb RAM upgrade would certainly be sufficient, even for fairly demanding Photoshop work. The internal 80Gb drive for that model would give you a reasonable amount of space for files, though you would be wise to add a larger external drive too if the work you are doing is at all crucial. The same system would also be capable of your iPhoto work too. If your use is more casual, then the 1.25GHz mini would be enough, but again you'd need the 1Gb RAM upgrade.
If your intended use is more at the commercial end of Photoshop use, then the chances are that even though a mini would be sufficient, you'd be better with an iMac or G5 tower, simply because for pro-level work, these systems are faster and permit smoother and more productive workflow.
It also has to be said that no Mac will need upgrading each year, unless your level of use or your needs of that system change dramatically. A system you buy today will remain just as functional into the future. In other words, the best way to minimize the risk of having to upgrade in the forseable future is to work out exactly what you want the system for and buy a system that meets your present (and projected future) needs. -
Basic Hyperion Workspace question
Is there any way to Drill-Down to data by double-clicking on the chart item in Hyperion Workspace? I can do this in Hyperion Reporting Studio.
hi all,Hi Neerav

Basic recording/feedback question
I'm recording basic vocals against accompaniment tracks using an APOGEE ONE and Audio-Technica 40 series AT8449 condenser mic. I use only headphones, no external speakers.
If I record with "monitoring" on I constantly battle feedback/distortion, especially on songs with a wide dynamic range. When the feedback protection kicks in the message indicates that I'm getting feedback through my external speakers (which I don't have), I can minimize the problem by turning "monitoring" off but I lose the reference vocal. I know I must be overlooking something very simple. Any help is appreciated.hi all,Hi Neerav

Okay, I know this is a basic question, and I'm not sure if this is really where I should be posting it, but maybe someone out there has experience with this.
I have a PDF form sitting on a secure server. I have it set up to email the completed PDF back to our company when the user clicks the SUBMIT buttton. Whether or not the PDF is secure coming back to us would be dependent on the email server the user uses - not that the form sits in a secure area on our server or that the PDF is security settings are set, correct?
Any input appreciated.
Thanks

basic wifi service question
A Windows-using friend of mine subscribes to a service from Verizon that is sort of like a cell phone for a computer - wifi service that you can access from theoretically anywhere, for something like $60 a month -
as far as I can determine, one CAN get this for Mac but ONLY if you have a 15 or 17 inch laptop with PC slots - unless I am missing something. It requires a special kyocera card.
Another company, T-Mobile, offers a similar service, but with no MAC access at all.
So my question is: is there a similar service, wi-fi access theoretically anywhere (or even just anywhere in New York City) ? Hopefully with just the regular mac airport card and not any additional special hardware?
Thanks!
WillHello WillFriedwald2
The kind of service your describing is probably a 3G and GPRS service.
Phone companies now offer mobile high speed connections using EDGE technology or GPRS2 and supply a 3G or GPRS PCMCIA card.
However some companies are now offering a package whereby you get high speed 3g and gprs and also wifi.
So to use this service on a laptop that has no PC card slot you need to get a 3G or GPRS2 phone that supports blue tooth then you can connect your laptop to the phone over bluetooth and therefore access high speed internet.
But if you had a desktop mac such as a G5 you would be better just getting a regular cable or dsl connection in your home and invest in a wireless router. -
Basic JDBC transactional question
Hello all,
I have (what I believe) is a basic transactional JDBC question.
Here's what I want to do:
begin transaction
select a row from a table where (some condition).
that row may or may not exist.
if the row exists: update the row
else if the row does not exist, insert a new row
end transaction
I want this entire thing to be atomic .. I don't want the select to complete, then have something else come in there before the update/insert takes place.
I'm using MySQL .. I seem to remember hearing about some proprietary MySQL command which would do a SELECT + UPDATE atomically .. which would be fine, but I can't find it.
Wrapping this with a row-level lock would be fine too .. I'm just not sure how to do that in JDBC.
Thanks!
-dBy thte way, and not that it helps the orignal poster, who's using MySQL, but Oracle has a proprietary MERGE statement that does "insert or update" in one go. For example:
MERGE INTO bonuses D
USING (SELECT employee_id, salary, department_id FROM employees
WHERE department_id = 80) S
ON (D.employee_id = S.employee_id)
WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET D.bonus = D.bonus + S.salary*.01
DELETE WHERE (S.salary > 8000)
WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN INSERT (D.employee_id, D.bonus)
VALUES (S.employee_id, S.salary*0.1)
WHERE (S.salary <= 8000); -

EventHandler - Basic usage question
Hi,
I have a very simple question (so it seems) about java.beans.EventHandler
How does it work???
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.beans.*;
class TestGUI extends JFrame {
TestGUI() {
JButton b = new JButton("Press");
getContentPane().add(b);
b.addActionListener((ActionListener)
EventHandler.create(ActionListener.class, this, "test")
pack();
show();
public void test() {
System.out.println("Ok!");
public static void main(String[] args) {
new TestGUI().setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
}It won't find the "test" method, and throws an exception (an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException, interestingly, but that is just a bug on EventHandler part) . What am I missing? I've searched the forums and seen quite many posts with about the same question - but without replies.
ThanksThat is rather interseting, I guess. I used this code, and everything worked fine. I really don't see a difference 'tween what I did and what you did...:
public class EHTest extends JFrame
EHTest()
super("EHTest");
JPanel left = new JPanel();
left.setLayout(new GridLayout(3,0));
JButton[] buttons = new JButton[6];
for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++)
buttons[i] = new JButton("Button: "+i);
buttons.addActionListener((ActionListener)
EventHandler.create(ActionListener.class, this, "doSomething"));
left.add(buttons[i]);
setContentPane(left);
pack();
setVisible(true);
public void doSomething()
System.out.println("Something");
public static void main(String[] args)
new EHTest(); -

AFAIK, it is expected that we should we the TABLES statement if the node type is a TABLE and if the node type is DDIC type then it is expected that we should use NODES statement, however I found that they can be used interchangeably.
We can find the node type info in the structure defintion of the LDB(in SE36)
Also check this extract from the SAP help
The nodes of the structure are declared with the TABLES statement which generates
the appropriate table work areas. You can also use the NODES statement to define
database tables as nodes. If a node of a logical database is not a database table,
you must use the NODES statement.

I have developed a java project in eclipse. To develop this, I have used many external jars that I added in Java Build Path.
I exported this project as jar file.
Now I want to use class files in this project in the jsp page.
The problem is where should I put my jar file of this project and also the external jar files that I used. I made a WEB-INF folder in my project folder but still it is creating errors.
Please suggest.HI,
I put both my project jar file, and the external jar file on which it is dependent in WEB-INF/lib directory. It can find my project jar file but not the external jars(axis.jar) and gives the errors as:
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc.setItemQName(Ljavax/xml/namespace/QName;)V
Could you please tell what is the problem. Under which path it looks for the external jars?

Basic schema design and security mechanisms for slowing down bandwidth
Hi to all!
At first I am sorry for a lot of noob questions - I am just beginner in networking.
I have LAN with 1 SW (cisco catalyst 2950 series), 1 R (cisco 2501), one Apache server on Linux machine (Fedora) and 5 computers . My task is to test my application for preventing DoS attacks on the computer with Apache. My network design is on the image, but if will be necessery, I can change it (I can use more switches and routers like this). So my noob questions are:
1.) will this desing work? How can I connect these to LANs to router? do I need one more router? can I connect SW ethernet port to router's console port?
2.) I have erased SW and R configuration. I have configured only interfaces and RIP protocol with networks 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/24. what else I need to configure for making possible viewing webpage from computer with apache on other computer?
3.) what is "ip http server" setting?
4.) i need to send TCP, UDP, HTTP and ICMP packets from computers to apache (is it default allowed?).
5.) i need to use all bandwidth for DoS attack, so i need to disable security mechanisms (configurations are erased, so what else do i need to disable or set up?) I heard only about storm-control, but it is disabled.
6.) do I need to setup something like this for full speed on devices?
interface range fa 0/1 - 3
speed 100
duplex full
7.) last question is, I want to monitor protocols and ports of packets sent from computers to apache computer or bandwidth usage (bits/s). Does have SW/R some mechanisms for statistics like this?
Thank you very much.

The 2950 switch and 2501 router are pretty old, low specification devices, so you might run into performance problems. Be aware of this. The 2950 also is not, from memory, a layer 3 switch, so it does *no* routing.
To answer your questions 9I'm assuming some basic knowlege of how to use IOS, so these commands are indicative only).
The 2501 has only one ethernet port, so you can't connect the way you have in your diagram. Youc an not connect an ethernet port to the router console port - the console port is a serial connection, by default running at 9600/8N1, and is not convertable to ethernet.
To make your required network work, you'd need to do the following.
1) Configure your 2501 ethernet port for dot1q VLAN trunking by doing something like this
interface fastethernet0
no shutdown
speed 100
duplex full
no ip address
interface fastethernet0.2
encapsulation dot1q 2
ip address 10.0.0.4 255.0.0.0
interface fastethernet0.3
encapsulation dot1q 3
ip address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
Setup in this manner you don't need routing protocols such as RIP because both routes will be directly connected, and the router will know how to get between them without anything fancy.
Then connect the ethernet interface of your 2501 to a port on your 2950 switch - I'll assume it's a 24 port switch, so I'll use interface f0/24
Create VLAN's 2 & 3 for your devices by doing this (2950 is so old the IOS method us creating VLAN's won't work, from memory)
vlan database
vlan 2 name workstations
vlan 3 name server
interface f0/24
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
speed 100
duplex full
switchport trunk allowed vlans 2-3
You can create a VLAN interface for management of your switch at the same time if you like
interface vlan2
ip address 10.0.0.7 255.0.0.0
no shutdown
Then connect your devices. You will need to configure each switchport into an appropriate VLAN - for example, if you are connecting your server to port f0/23
interface f0/23
switchport mode access
spanning-tree portfas
switchport access vlan 3
Use "switchport access vlan2" for your workstation ports.
The "ip http server" setting on switches/routers enables management via the web - on these old devices, turn it off, as it's next to useless. Type "no ip http server" in configuration mode.
There is no packet filtering or security enabled on these devices by default, so you can just sling whatever you like at the Apache server.
Unfortunately, owing to the fact you only have one ethernet port to uplink to the router, you will never be able to saturate the server. The best you will manage is 50 megabits per second (half in, half out) because you have to trunk back to the switch to get to the server. If you really need to flood the server, you either need a better router (one wit two ethernet ports) or a layer-3 capable switch (so you can eliminate the trunk and just use the in-built routing capabilities between subnets).
And finally - you won't be able to monitor protocols/ports using this hardware. You *could* setup a MONITOR/MIRROR port and use a separate PC running wireshark or something to monitor the trunk port, but that'd need additional hardware (PC's), and a bit more configuration.
Phew. Hope that helps a bit. Basically, to do the loading you want, you need better/different hardware, but you can come close with what you've got.
Cheers. -
Big difference between iMac and MacMini for a basic FCP usage?
Hi all,
the question is the one on the subject.
The comparison is between the:
- iMac 3.06Ghz 8GB 512vRam (the one on my signature here below)
- MacMini 2.4Ghz 8GB 256vRam
I would like to know if i will notice significant differencies in a basic usage of FCP: i mean a usage of FCP more like if it was FCExpress...Thanks Tom, this is due to hardware limitations i suppose ?
There is some link/resource where i can read wich applications are compromised?
thanks again -
/ usage questions...
Hello.
I have 2 questions:
1. I have noticed that my / partition's used space increased by ~10M from the last time I've checked it, from 111M to 121M. What could be the cause of that? (see the info below...)
2. The output of df and du is not what I am expecting it to be. I.e. there are differences between the disk usage reported by these 2 commands on the / partition. What could be the cause of this? (see the info below...)
Any reply or any RTFM re-dirrectioning is appreciated.
TIA

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to [email protected]

(...) varying from browser cache data increase to a cronjob like updatedb, or even you installing or downloading something.
When I've read these words I have started to "scroll" back in my memory buffer and eventually I've remembered that the only thing I did as superuser was to download some Firefox extensions which (surprise or not...) summed up to ~12M.
So we have the answer for this one too thanks to your hints
PS: That's exactly the reason why I've made a small / partition - to keep a close eye on it's usage and to ring some allarms when needed.
Again, thank you. -
Basic XML Publisher Question: How to access tags in the higher levels?
Hi All,
We have a basic question in XML Publisher.
We have a xml hierarchy like below:
<CD_CATALOG>
<CATALOG>
<CAT_NAME> CATALOG 1</CAT_NAME>
<CD>
<TITLE>TITLE1 </TITLE>
<ARTIST>ARTIST1 </ARTIST>
</CD>
<CD>
<TITLE> TITLE2</TITLE>
<ARTIST>ARTIST2 </ARTIST>
</CD>
</CATALOG>
<CATALOG>
<CAT_NAME> CATALOG 2</CAT_NAME>
<CD>
<TITLE>TITLE3 </TITLE>
<ARTIST>ARTIST3 </ARTIST>
</CD>
<CD>
<TITLE> TITLE4</TITLE>
<ARTIST>ARTIST4 </ARTIST>
</CD>
</CATALOG>
</CD_CATALOG>
We need to create a report like below:
CATALOG_NAME CD_TITLE CD_ARTISTCATALOG 1 TITLE1 ARTIST1
CATALOG 1 TITLE2 ARTIST2
CATALOG 2 TITLE3 ARTIST3
CATALOG 2 TITLE4 ARTIST4
So we have to loop at the level of <CD> using for-each CD. But when we are inside this loop, we cannot access the value of CAT_NAME which is at a higher level.
How can we solve this?
Right now, we are using the work-around of set_variable and get_Variable. We are setting the value of CAT_NAME inside an outer loop, and using it inside the inner loop using get_variable.
Is this the proper way to do this or are there better ways to do this? We are running into troubles when the data is inside tables.you can use
<?../CAT_NAME?>copy past to your template
<?for-each:CD?> <?../CAT_NAME?> <?TITLE?> <?ARTIST?> <?end for-each?>
