Batch Exporting File Naming Issue

I have to batch export about 30 images at a time, but I am having an issue now that the "Export" piece of the action includes a specific file name in the "save in" property, where as it's supposed to only include the name of the containing folder. This causes all the images included in the batch to be saved with the same file name thus saving over the previous export each time. I cannot figure out how to execute the Save for Web and devices action without it recording the specific file name.
My process is:
- Open one image
- Create a new Action (it begins recording)
- Crop the image
- Save for Web and devices (I leave the file name as is, but save it to a different folder) Ex. "annoying_child_screaming.jpeg"
- Close without saving
- Stop the action
- File > Automate > Batch
- I select the source folder with all the original photos
- Specify a Destination folder (a different folder where all the cropped ones will be)
- I don't select any checkboxes
- File Naming: I leave the default "Document Name" + "extension" Starting serial#: 1
When I hit okay, I can see Photoshop going through each image and doing the specified actions, but instead of preserving the original file name, it saves each one with the file name that I saved the first one when originally creating the action (Ex. it rewrites "annoying_child_screaming.jpeg" for each file)
I just upgraded to CS5 from CS4 (where I hadn't been having this problem). I have compared my settings to a coworker's who's computer it does work on, but we can't figure out what's wrong. The difference is in the Export details in the Actions dialog box - where it has the "IN" property, usually only a folder location is specified, but on my comp, it also specifies the file name.
Please help.

When you record the save for web step use the original file name
(you noted you did that in post 1)
Is the name you used the same as the file
you opened when recording the save for web step?
Don't specify any destination in the batch dialog or the files will possibly
be overwritten and you'll see the results your seeing.
The destination is the folder you specified during the save for web step while recording the action.

  • File naming issue/workflow help needed...

I shoot weddings and am continually frustrated with A2's file naming. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as it's killing my workflow.
THE GOOD: I import the images with the file name I want and the metadata I want. I then edit out, deleting bad images and leaving borderline images (as outtakes) in the project while putting my selects together for the client in a smart album. I put the selects in a smart album based on their rating and keywords. The selects are not sequential, so I "select all" and make "batch change" putting them in sequence.
THE BAD: Here is where I always encounter my first problem. Any images I have have worked on (in Photoshop) for my website now have different names. So when I export all in the album, the worked-on versions don't fit in sequentially. And some stacks have the edited image on top, and others do not.
The other problem is when a bride places an order. I find the corresponding file and externally edit it. It now resides in the smart album with a different name than all the files around it. I put the print size in the exported version name and I have to open the dialog box for every single image and re-type the size in the custom name space. I have an order with 295 different images and it's killing me. The other problem is when the bride goes to re-order a print she has, the number on the back has no connection to the numbers on my site or the smart album.
I find I'm going back to Photomechanic more often just to organize and name images because it actually changes the name of the file instead of "masking" it as A2 seems to do.
Is there a way to keep A2 from doing this and how do I get the adjusted image to be the pick of the stack?
    Thanks-Kevin

I happily paid the 20 bucks for 'A Better Finder Renamer' and was able to have it batch rename RAW files to my needs. It uses simple Boolean logic to cut or add to a file name and can read time stamps from the file.

  • Aspect Ratio Sort and Export (File Naming)

When I crop my photos, I sometimes find that some photos work best in the 4x5/8x10 crop and others in a 2x3/4x6 aspect ratio.
Issue #1) How can I sort and find all of my images with a specific aspect ratio?
When in the Library module and setting up a filter (ctrl+f), I don't see any way to filter and sort out my aspect ratio. In the "Metadata - Label" filter fields, there is an "Aspect Ratio" value however the only options are Portrait and Landscape. (more of a photo/page layout than 'aspect ratio' to me)
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options (just as presented with "r" is pressed for resize) in the Library Filter Metadata. **
Issue #2) How can I include the aspect ratio of the image (e.g. 4x5) in the exported file name?
I don't see any way to to do this either, so I have to manually find all of the images with the same aspect ratio first, then set a Custom Name field for export and export each ratio at a time.
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options to the file naming fields available for selection when exporting images.  Values like "4x5" and "4x6" would be great to be able to include in the filename of my images.

    Brian

  • Camera file naming issue

When I make a picture, the system gives it a name like DSC_0064.JPG. If I delete this picture and make a new one the new file will have the exact same name instead of DSC_0065.JPG. Are there any setting or solution to force the system to use continuos file naming?

At this stage I would say it is unlikely as this has been a standard function for many generations of handsets.

  • LR3 Missing File Naming Issue

    Hello,
I accidently deleted a number of images from two different collections.  Luckily my partner had exported copies of all the keepers with the same file names.
LR3 never lost the catalog info, and the thumbnails were still present, albeit with the question marks for missing files.
In order to preserve at least the thumbnails of the non-keeper files, I simply used Windows explorer to copy the backups into the original location.  (I realize I could have just deleted the old files and re-imported all of them via LR, but as I said I wanted to keep the ~10% of non-keepers as well.)
In one collection, the Locate Missing File process worked like a champ, and all the images have been reconnected in the LR catalog.
In the other collection, the Locate Missing File dialogue results in another dialogue that says the file name is not the same, even though, to my eyes, it is identical.  I am not sure if it's an issue with .jpg vs .jpeg vs .JPEG or something else.  When I do force the link, I get an additional dialogue that says the metadata has changes and it prompts me to overwrite it.
So my question is - Any idea why LR thinks the filenames are different when they are identical to the naked eye?  Obviously I could do this one by one, but I have a few thousand images and was looking for a batch process to re-link them all.  And I realize also that I could just re-import all the keepers, but I'm trying to preserve the non-keepers (they are indexing images and still have their uses, even in thumbnail form).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Peter C

    web-weaver,
Thanks for the response.  I would say that it could be a factor because the files from my partner were obviously kept in a different folder.  However, the move and Locate function worked fine on one set of images, but not the other.  I'm guessing my partner ran the other images through some kind of processing that altered the filename in a way that is not apparent.
I'll keep trying to figure it out.
Thanks for the thought at least,
    Peter

  • Export file naming bug

If the version name of an image is empty and you export that image and select Name Format as 'current version name', Aperture will do the export and the resultant file created has only the filetype extension as is name. The finder under normal conditions will not show the file because it appears as a hidden file.

Regarding item 1, the pins can be visible or not visible or conditionally visible.  The option to do this is at the lower left of the tool-options bar available when you press the T key to toggle it on and off.  If you feel your pin-visibility options are set properly, please show a print-screen with the pins not there and the pin-visibility options set to Always.
Not sure about item 2 as I don’t use it.

  • CS2 pdf export file naming

When exporting to pdf, the pdf is not given the indesign file name but uses the previously saved name which then has to be manually altered. Can not find in preferences where to change this. Any suggestions?

Every person is entitled to an opinion. Everyone else is entitled to agree or disagree.
In my real world workflow, the ideal would be that the PDF file defaults to the current name of the file... not a name that could have been a one time export, or could have been an export of an older version last month, or last year.
Instead of honoring the current filename, it 'remembers' the first name that the export is changed to if the file is saved after the export. The waste of time comes in when I have to then 'fix' the file for future revisions, or retype the name of the file.
Again, I don't agree with calling it a waste of time to have InDesign behave the way the user desires.
If you want it to call a file by the last export name... great, it happens to work that way if you save after exporting.
If you happen to want it to use the filename as the export name, well, then you have to either not save after any export, or waste your time fixing what is broken (my opinion).
Perhaps an option or preference is warranted?

"use last export name when exporting"

  • Export PDF naming issue

When exporting a file from ID CS4 patched all the way up I getting the wrong file name from files that have saved as with a different version number. For example files with saved as: filename-r4.idd
    are showing up as filename-r3.idd
    Ron Smith
    Inte-Great

To reset a file so that the export will acquire the file name:
    export to
    .inx
    open and
save as to the new file name
    then export to
    PDF
Then, as J Maloney suggested, Save/Save As before exporting to PDF in the future. Or, if you do manually rename the PDF on Export, don't save the file afterwards.

  • PDF printer driver file naming issue

Hello, I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for this question but here goes. When I use the PDF printer driver to "print" a PDF file from InDesign or Illustrator, the file name is appended with extra information I don't want. For example, I want just "FileName.pdf, but what comes up in the dialog box is: FileName.ai @50% (CMYK-Preview).pdf. So I have to waste time deleting the extra information. Is there any way to turn this off? Is the PDF printer driver causing this or is it a feature of InDesign or Illustrator? All of us in our art department have looked for an answer to this but can't find even a mention of this on the forums. It's really frustrating!
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Tom

I think the title may be coming from the caption of the window that is
open. If so, try printing from a window when you are NOT in CMYK
    preview, 50% etc.

  • [JS] File Naming Issues

NOTE: I am writing JavaScript for InDesign CS2 and CS3.
My script involves writing file names that a user will input. The filenames will later be displayed in a menu. Since characters like ? % " / : can present problems, what's the best way to avoid bad file names? Should I just search the string for the characters I stated above before writing the filename? Or is there a better way to avoid bad characters?
If the best way is to scan for bad characters, what are all the characters I should prevent users from inputting? I thought of the following:
    Are there any I missed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

A slightly safer way is to scan for allowed characters! That way, you have ultimate control over everything a non-educated user could throw at you. Viz., you forgot the "/", which is (I think) allowed on a Mac, but not on Windows.
Test if the string consists only of characters in a string like "a..zA..Z0..9_-.!" (with the alphabet written out entirely; perhaps with a few more characters).

The exported file naming as following:- Let said i would like to export my report (dailyreport.rpt) into excel file and the exported file name as below:- dailyreport_<Report_Run_Date>.xls **<Report_Run_Date> will be a field which is retrieve from my stored procedure.

    Hello,
If you've not already solved this, let me ask a couple q's:
What tool are you running this report through for the export (it sounds like you're wanting to automate the process)?
Is it Business Object XI or Crystal Enterprise or simply manually exporting it using the CR designer program or...?

  • Export for the Web and File Naming : Batch problem in Photoshop CC

Is it possible to use "File Naming" when you are using in a batch "Save for the Web" export ?
    What I want to do:
I have images that I need to resize, crop and rename (change "filename.jpg" to "filename_850x490.jpg" and make an optimisation for the web
I want to create an action that I can use in a batch
    What is working :
I can use my action (resize, crop, save) and use file renaming option if I use "save as" options
I can use my action (resize, crop, save for the web ...) but the file renaming option are not use at the export,
So I have to create two actions (one for resize, crop and rename and an other to compress images with "save for the web"
==> What's wrong with "File rename" and "save for the web"?
    Thank You for support !
    My Environement :
    Photoshop CC : last update
    OS : Windows 8 Entreprise - 64 bits
    Proc : Intel Xeon CPU E5 3.00 GHz - Ram : 8 GB - GPU : AMD FirePro V5900 (FireGL V)

Probably a lot easier if you use the Image Processor Pro script

  • Action batch export issue with image trace

So, currently I'm working on batch processing jpeg sequences using illustrator's image trace and distortion effects. I have batch exported the image traces of the sequences via Adobe bridge.  Now I'm trying to create an action which opens the .ai files containing those image traces, apply a graphic style to the trace, and export a png from that.  I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get this to work right now. If I do the steps (step by step... not using a recorded action) I want on a single file, it works great, but the moment I batch export using the action I've created, it puts the original .png image that the image trace was linked to, on top of the image. The result is a bunch of .png exports that look exactly like my original image sequence.  If I add a "save" function to the action and open the resulting .ai files, I can see that the image trace vectors are in the file. The "linked png" however visible on the layer above those vectors.  Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? How do I get rid of that pesky linked image.
Also, for anyone who might be thinking that it has something to do with expanding the image trace before applying effects, this issue I'm running into, I've determined, is happening higher up in the hierarchy of the actions... If I simply make an action to open the image trace illustrator file and save it back out, the same issue occurs... placing the .png "linked file" on top of the vector image.
While I'm at it, I might as well ask if anyone knows how to change the illustrator default image trace preset.... Without being able to change it, or much less specify in the action sequence that I'd like to use a user created image trace preset rather than the default setting, it's greatly overcomplicating my workflow. Makes what could easily be one-step batch processing into two. Seems pretty silly if you ask me.
Please, if you guys have any insights on this, let me know. It's super frustrating... By the way, if you're wondering what type of effect I'm going for, the idea (as well as some explanation into their own process) starts at 12:44 of this video (http://vimeo.com/77427470).
    THANKS!

Just wanted to let you guys know, for anyone who might be having my same issue... My home computer, even after a fresh install of Illustrator, was still placing the linked jpeg over the traced vector shapes when batch exporting... I did however find a workaround.  Rather than using Bridge CS6 for the batch image tracing, I used Bridge CS5 to trace in Illustrator CS5. Then, I used Illustrator CS6 to batch export an action that imported and applied an effect to those image traced sequences.  When you do this, it forces you to expand the tracing on import (because of the difference in Illustrator versions I'm assuming).  This way, when you batch run the action, it's already working with expanded vector shapes.  Not sure why this works, but it does.
Also, I was having some issues getting Illustrator to apply the graphic style when batch exporting. I got it to work by copying an object with that particular graphic style to the clipboard, then adding in the action I was running a "paste" command, followed by a "clear" command.  I can only assume that Illustrator was having issues loading custom graphics styles while batch exporting. The paste/delete technique is annoying, but gets it done.
Anyways. Just wanted to check in on this one. I'm happy I was able to muscle my way through it all.

  • Batch File Naming - not working

In Automate > Batch... can someone tell me how to make File Naming work? I put in my name info, but PS is ignoring it and saving the new file with the original file name.
    Thx,
    Steven
    OS X 10.4.11 PS 10.0.1 (CS3), 867 MHz PowerPC G4 Quicksilver with 1.5 GB RAM

SFW is exporting the file and you must either save or close (preferable-and without saving) the original. Therefore you better use Bridge for the renaming part :-)
I do find the destination section to confusing to0. That is why I record actions with the save as and destination part in it. It is really a peace of cake to select the in the finder and move to other folders, it takes less time then selecting (and/or creating new folders) in the destination section.
I know everyone has its own way but this is mine. I develop Raw in ACR and finish them in PSCS using various actions for most of the parts, last action sharpens the files and saves them as PSD file in one particular folder. In Bridge I select this files adding metadata and (batch)renaming.
After this I have several actions for resizing and save as. One is creating 4 different sizes and a SFW version each saved in a predestinated set of folders. I end each batch with closing the file without saving which is leaving the original psd file untouched.
But as I said, so much photographers so much workflows... :-(
