BCM4311 dropping packets and occasionally connection

I got a new Dell Latitude D820 (refurbished really) onto which I installed Arch.  I installed the b43-firmware for the AUR and not I can connect to my network, but I drop about 8% of my packets and occasionally I just flat out loose my connection.
I had an old Dell Latitude D620 before and I believe I mirrored the set up over but something still isn't working.  I can get ethernet, but not wireless fully working.

  • WRT160Nv3 drops WiFi and Hardwired connections simultaneously

I've been using the WRT160N for about 4-5 months now. I'm running the most up-to-date firmware available for the router. I haven't had any real issues with it's performance until recently. The router handles PPPoE and usually only has two computers connected at a time, at most five. I use it for browsing, streaming, and gaming.
About a week ago I found that my router had completely reset itself while I was at work. No one had been at the house, so I know that it wasn't tampered with. Everything was set to factory, and it was broadcasting it's SSID as Linksys, which I find odd because I thought the factory default didn't automatically have SSID checked, I could be wrong.
So, I set it up to the way it was before the incident, roughly, and it now works for every machine again (running XP, OS 10.7, Vista, Windows 7), but while I'm gaming the router will halt after about 4 minutes, all of the lights that are used to indicate traffic over ethernet light up, solid, stay lit for about 5 seconds, and then start flickering again.
The odd thing is, that I don't lose connection with my ISP when this happens. I'm still connected, I know this because my IP is the same after this happens as it was it was before.
Also, this happens with WiFi connections and wired connections, it doesn't matter. The only thing I can think of is it overheating, because it gets warm.
    Here are my current settings:

It says the Firmware is "3.0.02 Build 003" and I think last I looked it was at build 8, if that's the case, I'll update it after posting this.
    Thanks.

I have reinstalled the current firmware, same problem, though I have made some more observations...
When my router resets itself, or when the lights come on solid, it will drop the connection for the wired computer, not just the internet, the local network. Windows acts like there's nothing connected to the computer. The computer using WiFi will show a signal drop, and I cannot connect to the router in that time, but it doesn't drop the WiFi connection completely, all of the time. That may be more related to the computer harware, the OS, or connection type than the actual router itself.
The router is cunnetly suspended in front of a pretty big fan, and still it drops a connection any time you want to do anything that requires constant bandwidth. I'm going to continue messing with it, but it's starting to seem like a lost cause.
    Thanks again.

  • Time Machine and Occasionally-Connected External Hard Drives

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro. It uses Time Machine to backup over the LAN, to a USB drive which is connected to my AirPort Extreme hub. This works fine. (Extremely well, in fact.)
Occasionally, I do video editing work. When I'm doing this work, I connect an external FireWire drive to my MacBook Pro - the FireWire drive contains all my video projects. The rest of the time, the FireWire drive is powered down.
Is it a good idea to include the FireWire drive in the Time Machine backup? If Time Machine backs up the FireWire drive, and on subsequent backups the FireWire drive is not available, what happens to the FireWire drive backup when I enter Time Machine?
    Bruno.

According to Disk Utility, GUID and AFP are both ok for a non-bootable drive with either CPU. The difference is when you want to make a volume bootable.
Since TM volumes are not bootable, it shouldn't matter UNLESS you have some other bootable system installed on the drive.
Right now, the drive on my Intel iMac is partitioned AFP and the one on the PPC powerbook is GUID. They both appear to be behaving themselves. The iMac has had one instance (since the last partition job) of a massive backup which occurred right after I changed the exclude list and the PPC has had no massive backups (other than the initial one). On that one, I built the exclude list BEFORE the initial backup.

  • Raw Socket always drop packets and return Destination Unreachable

    Ho folks,
I have an application program that opens a raw socket to expect for UDP message incoming from the network.
However everytime I receive a package the Solaris 10 OS return a ICMP - Destination (port) unreachable, and no message
    is send to my application.
I did test the same application in linux and it worked well, all that I have to do was disable ICMP responses using iptables.
    Just to make things clear:
In linux the OS was sending the ICMP - Destionation (port) unreachable, however my program was
receiving the packets anyway. So just to stop those messages I did use the iptables. However, in
Solaris 10 the ICMP response is sending back and no message is forward to my application.
Would your guys help me to solve that?
    Thanks in advance

    Folks, here I go again...:-)
I have been spent some time, trying to figure out why it is not work. I read in books and internet, that BSD raw sockets DO NOT allow us to receive TCP/UDP packages. However the linux implementation DOES allow. That is because it work in linux but not in solaris.
Given that, such information is 100% true (book: Unix NetworkProgramming, 3rd edition), I would like to ask your guys what I can do to solve my problem.
Basically what I need is create an application that:
    1) Allows to bind thousand of sockets at the same time (it is a media server that handles thousand of RTP connections)
This I believe I can do using socket multiplexing (e.g. select() )
    2) Read not only the packet data, I need to retrieve the whole packet address (including IP, UDP, Upper Layers...)
When using SOCK_DGRAM with IPPROTO_UDP, I can get the messages but I can't get the IP header
    3) Uses something like raw socket to send messages, here I believe I can use raw socket with no problem, is just sending messages
    Thanks and Regards

  • My iPad2 is suddenly dropping wifi and bluetooth connections

It has been working for over a year without any issues.  There is a small dent on the corner which may be a result from being dropped.  Anyone know anything about the transmitter/receiver/antenna that I could look at?

Make sure it's not in Aeroplane Mode.

  • New FIOS customer with dropped VOIP calls and Internet connection

I am a new FIOS customer. Got my 50/25 connection a week ago, switching from a TWC 6/1 connection. Ever since the new connection, I've had numerous issues.
My VOIP (Ooma) connection constantly drops and re-connects during conversations
I've had random Internet connection losses, which picks up again after a few minutes
My home alarm starts chirping every once in a while
I've contacted Verizon several times due to these problems and have received varying answers with no resolution of the problem.
The first time I spoke with support, the tech logged into my router and changed the WiFi channel saying that would fix the problem. It didn’t.
The second time I contacted them, the tech ran a bunch of diagnostics and said everything looked fine so it must be an IP address conflict with my devices, because I had a couple devices using static IP addresses. He said everythinf should be DHCP and the last two digits could not be higher than 99 (192.168.1.99). He said FIOS does not support 3-digit numbers at the end.
So I changed all my devices to DHCP and ran some online VOIP tests. It showed a packet loss of 2-5% and MOS score of 1 (which is bad). I was still getting dropped connections, so I disconnected all devices and connected just one computer to the router and tested again. I was still getting packet loss.
Then I called support a third time, this time the tech said there were no 2-digit IP restrictions and that he was detecting there was no UPS baterry backup for the ONT which was probably causing the problem, so he dispatched a field tech to my house.
Today the field tech came (same guy as before), he took one look at the box and said it was too close to my Electric meter and the RF from the meter was causing interference to the FIOS connection and resulting in dropped connection.
He moved the ONT to another location and said that should fix it.
Well, I'm still seeing packet loss and low MOS score when I run the VOIP test.
I don't know how much of what the techs are saying is true and how much is made up stuff.
Has anyone had similar issues and have thoughts on solutions or likely causes for dropped VOIP calls and connections? Could RF be causing this?
I thought going from a 6/1 Cable connection to a 50/25 FIOS connection would be awesome, but this has turned out to be a nightmare, and I may have to switch back to cable if the problem is not resolved.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

Don't know where the packet loss is happening. I ran the VOIP test on myspeed.visualware.com and it shows a packet loss of 2-5% at different times and a MOS score of 1.
The report says MOS should be around 4 for good VOIP calls.
The Verizon tech who came to the house just blamed the electric meter box for RF interference and move the ONT farther away.
My concern is that I'm getting different answers from different techs at Verizon.
Regarding IP addresses. The Router shows a DHCP range from 192.162.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 as available for devices on the network. So, if I need to assign a static IP to a device should I use a number below 99 or above 151?
    Thanks!

  • Broadband Dropping Out and Connection Speed Decrea...

Sorry to be a pain but I am back here again.
Since the last issue with speed, connection drop out and noisey line which required an underground cable to be partly replaced, all has been fantastic and no problem to report. Many thanks to those who were involved in helping with getting that issue resolved.
About 10 days ago the broadband started to drop out at random times but not too often. The broadband hub light would go out for about 15 seconds before returning. My connection would automatically resume and no great problem. It has since become more of a problem and pain.
The frequency of drop out increased with a sort of pattern. Last week an example would be drop out at 11:50 am, again at 12:40 and once more at 1:30 pm. Each time the connection returned my computer icon for wifi would be a warning triangle. I clicked on the icon and would get a message 'limited connection'. The only way I could connect again would be to click the icon and select to disconnect and then connect, making sure a 'tick' was in the box for autoconnection. A bit more of a pain than before but usable. It got more of a problem over the next few days.
The frequency of drop out increased. This became a right pain when trying to purchase things online as I could not be sure in the purchase had been completed or if I tried again would I get two lots? Upon broadband connection returning I would not be able to 'auto connect' but would get the warning triangle of 'limited connection'. I tried the click to disconnect and reconnect but it failed to work. I ended up shutting down the laptop, waiting before powering up. This failed to work as all I would get is the warning triangle and 'limited connection'. The only way I could reconnect was to press the 'restart' button. This worked but it got worse.
The next day the broadband connection would drop out every couple of hours. It got to the point that even pressing the 'restart' button would not allow me to connect. I tried three times and gave up. I had to resort to pressing the very small 'reset' button on the back. This cured the problem for about 12 hours before the drop outs started again.
It is now a case of 50/50 if I can connect to the broadband again after a drop out. It is getting quite frustrating. I only used the small 'reset' as a last resort. I have noticed that the speed of the connection has started to drop down also.
Each time the hub drops broadband and I can auto connect and do not press any hub button, the timer has reset to zero days and zero hours. I know it takes about a week for the connection to settle. I do wonder if these drop outs are messing the connection settings for my line speed? The line used to be rated at 21 Mbps but has decreased to 17 Mbps, my actual connection used to be 19 Mbps but struggles to reach 14 Mbps. It is slowly dropping with each and every drop out.
I also looked at the event log in the hub. Just before each broadband drop out I see a external connection is made with the initials 'CWMP' followed by 'event code 1 boot' or 'event code 6 connection request' or 'event code 4 value change'. Straight after the broadband connection drops out with out fail.
All I can seem to find out is that the external connection is either the hub connecting to the server or vice versa? As for the codes? I have no idea at all.
I only ever resort to pressing 'restart' if I cannot connect to my hub. I have only pressed the 'reset' as a last resort as nothing else worked to allow me to reconnect.
Can anyone offer any help or best a permanent fix?

I connected to the test socket and used a wired connection for the speed test and hub stats.
The hub position and run of cables are the same as when the last engineer advised as the best set up.
Since my last post I have checked the event log and 'CWMP' has made at least two remote connections but the hub did not drop broadband connection. The broadband has been stable but just slower than usual, as you stated due to the drop outs/disconnections.
I guess a case of wait and monitor to see if the problem has resolved itself?
Will the speed automatically return to the usual 18 to 19 Mbps? or will something else have to be done to reset it at the exchange/server?

My broadband and phone connection keeps dropping.  Its been fine for years and now since all this bad weather we have been having the connection lasts temporarily for a few minutes sometimes more and then all the blue lights start flashing orange, sometimes for a while, and then back to blue.  Could it be that there is a wider problem in the area I am living in my area.  I have tried to report this to BT via the Indian call centre but the best they can offer me is an engineer visit on 20 January (!!) and I may have to pay £130 if the fault is found on my property so I would like to know first if there is a wider probelm affecting others in my area.  Many thanks.

Just installed IOS 8 to iphone 5 and cannot connect to WI FI. Sometimes connects and when I begin to use the phone ot drops out.
I have attempted all the regular trouble shoots such as resets, complete restore and reinstallation of ios 8. no change.

I don't have an answer for you but from my experience iOS WiFi syncing has always been a hit and miss affair (more miss than hit I'm afraid). I have gotten to the stage where I rarely use the WiFi sync. It is just quicker, easier and much less stressful to use the USB cable. I am having the same issues with all the iOS devices in our family which includes various models of iPhone, iPad and an iPod Touch and have been having them since WiFi syncing was introduced (in iOS5 ???). And then I have not even mentioned my favorite iTunes syncing messages: "Waiting for items to copy" and "Waiting for changes to be applied"!
iTunes is always extremely quick and eager to pick up the devices but as soon as I click on sync it shows "Looking for iDevice" and then the device disappears. I have found that initiating the sync from the Settings app on the device prevents this issue.
It does however seem as if it is worse with Windows 7. I did not have so many issues with my previous Windows Vista PC.
Sorry I cannot be of any help.

  • Web part created on a subsite for a sharepoint list in another site using sharepoint designer, to show only the subsite's reports. Connection dropping off and showing all the reports

I crated web parts in the sub-sites (we have about 10 subsites) using sharepoint designer from a main list in another site.  Then used web part to show only the  ubsite's reports - using connection to the main list.  Problem is, the connection
is dropping off and showing all the reports on the main list that are confidential.  this has happened 3 time lately.  Could someone explain why it happens some times?  I had to fix it by adding the web part again and connecting it
    Thanks, Subathy.

    Hi George,
If you want to use a top level site "department" list column in all sub-sites, you can go to top level site and create a
lookup type "Site column" to look up the value from the department list, then all sub-sites can use this lookup type site column created in top level site.
    Thanks

well for the  ovi sync i really use that app to sync my contacts and calender and it set to manual sync so i guess it wouldn't go by it self
as for the wlan data and packet data , last night was ok withou any connection don't know how
or what happened it seems the problem is solved but i will also make sure tonight of the problem still exist or not
all i did last night i have installed 2 app (m.gaurd(netqin) and kaspersky antivirus) to scan my mobile and it did but it seems that its slowind down my already slow mobile
and removed them today because they corrupted the interface of my snaptu application which i use for facebook (the highlight color disappeared but it was still working) so i had to uninstall it and reinstall back again

  • Project is dropping audio and connections after burning

A project was created on an Intel machine running Tiger, then modified with all new assets on a PowerPC G5 with Tiger (10.4.11). When burned to disc, some menu audio is missing, and some connections (button links, menu timeouts) are non-functional. This has happened before and the solution has been:
    1) Delete all the PAR files on the PowerPC
    2) Copy the project file to the Intel machine (now running Leopard)
    3) Build and burn the project.
This is not working, nor is deleting and re-creating the offending menus. Short of rebuiliding this numbingly complex project, does anyone have a clue as to how to solve this or why this would be happening?
Disc functions perfectly in Simulator and Mac's software DVD Player; only the burned disc drops features. Both machines are running the newest version of DVDSP 4 (newer than the DVDSP 4 version that created the project file).

I started getting this exact problem when playing The Crew with my ZXR card. Audio channels start going to the wrong outputs within 5 minutes of playing the game every time. I ran the channel test after playing and stopping the game and they were still screwed up. After rebooting the PC, the problem is fixed again.
This is the first game I have noticed this problem with. This is the first game that has been this demanding on my PC and graphics cards (SLI, both running at 100% to a 4K monitor). I am wondering if the PCI bus is getting hammered too hard.
I have ordered a Sound Blaster X7 to see if the problem goes away. If not, I will be sending that back and going back to onboard audio.

  • WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none receive

    Hi,
WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none received"... Help
I have tried network diagnostics which doesnt help... The only other ting is, when I woke the computer up it said tat another device was using my IP... My wife had plugged her phone into the computer to charge etc but even when i turn wifi off on the phone there is no change... also in settings on the phone the IP address is different...

The answer to your question is - neither!
Your PC should to configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and to obtain DNS server IP addresses automatically, from the Airport Express. This is the way Windows (and Macs for that matter) are configued by default, and that is the way most people have their computers set up. If you manually configured your PC's IP address to be the same as your wife's Mac, it certainly explains why your PC is not able to access the internet.

I have the new iOS 6.1.2 on my iPad.  My wifi connects to my home network but keeps dropping it and won't reconnect.  Did not have this problem with previous iOS.  Apple, you have a quality assurance issue.  Don't be like Microsoft where they send out pieces of junk with testing it.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
