Beachball time, Mac Mini
OK, I know what you're thinking..that the Mac Mini wasn't designed for FCP, and that the G5 is really the only machine to work on. I used to have 2 DP G5s, so I'm aware of their power.
My mini gives me huge amounts of beachball time when working on my 720p animation. I get little or no beachball time when working with DV footage, either animorphic or not.
The beachball time I get in my animation doesn't go away. I'll get the beach ball, it'll stop. I'll try to pull down a menu and I'll get more beach ball. It'll stop, I'll try to do something else and yes, more beach ball.
ad nauseam.
The mini's boot volume is a 200GB external FW drive, 7200RPM, and I have my FCP projects folder on another such 7200RPM FW drive.
My hunch is that those drives' thruput isn't enough to sustain continuous play, but why the never-ending beachball episodes.
It's like it gets mad and won't stop beachballing.
Any suggestions?
Do I need to create a partition for Panther and run FCP 4.5HD on that?
I've got the mini running on the latest rev. of Tiger right now.
thanks for any hints!

my final destination is the small screen. I'm not concerned with TV or with CRTs. I was aiming for something that would play on LCD screens, potentially go to film, hence the 24 frame rate.
In terms of converting to Anamorphic DV can I get there by re-exporting my existing clips to 800 x 450 px? They're in Animation format now; would re-exporting them cause artifacts or damage?
I guess what I mean to ask is: how would I convert my existing animation clips, and how should I render my clips from here on out? All at 800 x 450?
Thanks much for the ideas..I guess I was just a hair ambitious hoping to do this with a mini!

"What is your final destination? Would converting it to Anamorphic DV be acceptable?

Mac Mini 1.42Ghz RAM Upgrade
Hello, first post so be kind!
Ive had my mac now for some time (Mac Mini 1.42Ghz G4 Power PC) which came with 512Mb of RAM. I am thinking about upgrading to 1Gb as I have just purchased a Digital SLR camera and the minimum photo size is 4Mb 8mp in Jpeg. When working with these pictures in Iphoto 5 there is considerable "thinking" by the Mac when manipulating or zooming in on the pictures.
Also Photoshop Elements which i bought the other day seems to work ok but sometimes the slowdown is experienced again when I use Bridge or just do something a bit more heavy with the features.
Ive been looking at memory modules from Crucial and Kingston but Ive also come across this from Samsung...
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZX J2aWV3&product_uid=82592
Is this preferable as Ive heard apple use Samsung and also it appears to be a little faster? Will it work in my mac?
Im not overly technical so any help would be greatWelcome to the Apple discussions.
The PPC mini can use either PC2700 memory or PC3200 memory, however, it will only use PC3200 memory at PC2700 speeds - there is no speed benefit from using PC3200 memory. See this Apple note: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300572
You can confirm easily if your system can use more memory by checking the activity monitor. This is located on your hard drive in the applications/utilities folder. Bring it up, and look at the system memory tab. Note page ins/page outs. If you find page outs, which is how often the system has to page memory out to the hard disk to free up memory, to be greater than 10% of page ins, then a memory increase will help. Optimal would be to have zero page outs. While you're looking at that page, you might have questions about the categories of memory shown - this Apple notes details them: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
To see what's involved with upgrading memory, there's a good OWC video at http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html . There's also a good pictorial at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/82.13.0.html -
Mac Mini stuck at boot after upgrading to Yosimite
Hi All,
I am using mac Mini late 2012 model with 4 gb ram. I have recently upgraded to OSX Yosimite.
But now I am facing issue with it.
My Mac stops at boot. With Apple logo, grey/white screen and progree bar with 0% progress.
If I keep it as it is for some time, Mac mini temperature rises and i feel the heat while touching the mac mini. And still progress bar show 0% progress.
But when I switch it off with the help of power button and restart it, it works fine.
This happen every now and then. I have only monitor, Bluetooth mouse, wired keyboard and LAN cable attached to it. (WIFI stops working after upgrading to OSX now there is no wifi icon in system preferences or in task bar )
I have tried clean install also. But no success.
Please suggest why it stops at 0% progress bar. This is working fine before upgrading.
Regards
SiddharthHi Adding screenshot of the same. It stuck at 0 %

2014 Mac mini 2.5" SSD upgrade
Hi all.
A long time Mac Mini fan here - after spent almost 3K for Mac Pro (outdated in few years) that I have to "accept" Apple's product refreshing strategies - that upgrade my hardware periodically is the trend.
Since then, I have turned to Mac Mini - for the small fraction of cost, I can "update" my Mini more frequently.
2009 Mac Mini x 2 (mine and my spouse's) are currently at grand children's possession, still going strong.
Now, we have 2010 (TV at bedroom), 2011 (mine) and 2012 Mac Minis. They were all the top Spec models - at the time. 2012 i7 Quad core, 2011 i7 with 6630M AMD video etc.
Cut into the story - I also put SSDs in all of them ( 1T SSD in 2012, 256Gb x 2 dual drives in 2011 and 256Gb in 2010) plus used Terminal to enable "TRIM" - until 10.10. .. sigh
Along with iOS 8.1.1 - I start to notice the inadequacy of my 2011 Mac Mini - airdrop/hand off will not work natively without some modification.
After tossing around getting an 2012 i7 Quad-core Mini ( 800-1000 USD) or - jumping into the fixed memory, 2014 Mini?
I decided to order a base model of 2.6GHz i5, with stock 1T hard drive, 8G ram (639-699 USD). Because I have few 512Gb SSD sitting around - I was torn to order the higher end model with PCI-e Apple OEM SSD 512G. After all the price adding, I realize I can buy TWO base 2.6GHz i5 Mini than 1 customized high end Mini.
Through the web, I found the Fusion drive model (2014, oh, with USD 200 extra) has PCI-e 128Gb SSD and 1T HDD. I am hoping one day, iFixit will have the part for the PCI-e cable/setting to be placed in 2014 Mini - for some people want to play around. For now, I am settling with slower speed of SATA-3, third party SSD without TRIM.
According to UPS, the my new toy will be delivered Monday and I will post more details about this SATA SSD upgrade process. After few days of testing.
I finally solved the problem of screen flickering ( when an app is opened, or few apps are opened), the screen will flicker on the app(s). This happened on Firefox, MS Word, Soundtrack (yes, I am still using it). iTunes, iPhoto, even "system preferences" etc etc.
First, my system was built via Time Machine restore - after SSD (Crucial 512Gb) on the SATA-3 port. ( theoretically would be slower compared to PCI-e SSD) on my 2014 Mac Mini 2.6Ghz, 8Gb memory. ( I chose the basic 2.6Ghz base model to save few $$, since I have two 512 Gb SSD laying around, instead of custom-build for 512 GB SSD PIC-e, with USD 1,299.00 price tag).
I tried numerous methods to avoid the flickering ie - PRAM reset, HDMI -> monitor, HDMI -> DVI cable, Thunderbolt -> DVI, Thunderbolt -> VGA on two different models of screen : no success.
The only time I could get a normal decent "flicker free" was when I booted into safe mode - after reboot - same issue.
I also used hardware check as Mini indicated "no issues" on the hardware.
I went to Apple Store and play with their set up - no issues (of course, Mac Mini was hooked on the Apple Display, wow!)
I started to wonder - either it would be OS X issues or "third party" software??
So, I took the 512 Gb SSD out (it is some sort of "pain" to open 2014 Mini), then used another SSD (120 Gb) for a clean install.
A fresh 10.10.1 on 2014 Mac Mini without other 3rd party software - worked great, no flickering at all.
I started to add the apps I normally have, one by one to test - UNTIL -- Microsoft Office 2011 (home and business version)
I have Outlook to synch with my Calendar, and typical Word, Excel, Powerpoint on my system.
As soon as I put Office 2011 on it - Voila! I found the culprit. It was running 14.4.6 version.
So, I put my 512Gb Crucial SSD back (another pain again) and booted up normally - same issues.
I have been check Apple to see if OS X 10.10.2 becomes general public release (hoping the problem would be accidentally fixed) - in the mean time, I was using my 2011 Mac Mini as the main system. 2014 Mac mini was on the disable list.
Until today, Office 2011 released 14.4.7 - I gave it a try and finally, Mac Mini 2014 with Iris GPU would not demonstrate "flickering" issues after the update!
Whew!!

Mac Mini Experiencing Hard Freeze 3-4 Times Per day...
About 10 days ago, my mid-2011 Mac Mini started experiencing a hard freeze wherein I would get the spinning beachball and slowly each open app would be come unresponsive and my only resort was to hold down the power button to restart. Upon reboot, the system would work fine for about an hour then the freeze would start again. I've rolled back my configuration to a state prior to the freezing, and in desperation, have done a completely clean re-install of the OS.
System specs:
Mid-2011 Mac Mini 2.7 GHz Core i7
16 GB RAM
256GB SSD
750GB HDD
Attached to a 27" LED Cinema Display, and an Airport Extreme Basestation/TimeCapsule (TimeMachine temporarily disabled)
I've been reading the logs, but don't really know how to interpret them so I've included a a number of postings right up until I force the reboot.
Thanks in advance!
Log below: The system performs fine until 12:15 or so

Using Time Capsule with a multiuser configured Mac Mini running 10.8.6
I have an Admin user and 3 standard users in my Mac Mini.
If I get a Time Capsule or a Thunderbolt compatiable external hard drive and back up using Time Machine, will 'it' do the entire drive or just user specific data.
In other words do I have to set up the back up within each user and will the back up take place without user login?
ThanksTM is designed to backup the disk and all user info.. there is no need to have each user login and run TM.. but it might be best if the setup is the Admin user.

Can a mac mini be set up to run two separate users at the same time?
I work for a middle school and we need to purchase 20 computers that will just be used to run internet apps. Though we have all Macs, we don't have a big budget and for this one use only, we are condsidering purchasing inexpensive HP all-in-ones for about $450 each. However, I was wondering if a Mac Mini can be first set up with 2 partitions, install the OS on both partitions, then run two different users, with two separate monitors and keyboards, at the same time? This way, instead of purchasing 20 Windows computers, we could purchase 10 Mac Mini's (and displays) and save money, and still be supporting just one OS throughout the campus.
If you setup a server, as in the Mac OS X Server Installation, pages 23ff show configurations, you can have multiple users, but they must all have computers. Some installations can be done with dumb terminals but that is not what you seem to want. Unix machines do have a multiple simultaneous user capability but you still have to have a computer for each user, again, not what you seem to want to do. Right now there are two other users logged in on my Sun workstation on the desk behind me...they are logged in because I permit them to do so.
And last night for an experiment I connected my iMac and MBP by ethernet wire, logged in on the iMac, then logged in on the MBP and from there on the iMac...but I set up the network to permit that and then disabled it again. You can create security holes doing things like this.
As dwb points out switching from Apple to PC equipment is a false economy that lures in administrators. In our county school system we had a superintendent who hired a good friend...who had PC-industry ties. Decided to remove all Apple equipment from the elementary schools and switch to PCs. It wasn't long before they ended up going on a 4-year cycle of "refreshing" the equipment, i.e., completely replacing all hardware in every school on a four year cycle. Since my wife was a Media Specialist, aka librarian, and responsible for technology in her school, every four years she had to develop a complete school map of where each teacher wanted the computers in their classrooms, complicated by where the technicians predetermined the locations of the network wire drops, of course. then teachers get shuffled over the summer and all the plans are for naught.
Anyway, there really isn't a solution to your problem except to buy a large number of computers and let each student use one and have them networked to a server, print server, printers, etc. This is not inexpensive and cutting corners will only cause headaches for you. -
I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?
Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?... or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen? -
I have erased the passport for Mac and started all over. When there is ~15 minutes left in the initial backup of the mac mini hard drive (234 GB total), it gets weird and time machine states that it it calculating the time remaining. 24 hours later, it is still backing up but shows that <200 GB of 2 TB are available and it quits backing up stating that there is not enough room. HELP! The WD My Passport for Mac and the Mac mini are less than a year old.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -

Maybe you have an old version of Melodyne or a demo version? I'd remove it and see if that fixes it anyway - not entirely sure, maybe someone else has more of a clue - there must be a solution anyway, so this response will take it back to the top. -
How do I backup my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini to 1TB Time Capsule
I cannot backup my MacBook Pro (osx 10.8.2) on Time Capsule using Time Machine. The following Time Machine error message appears: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/BARBARA’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. There is no problem when I use Time Machine to backup Mac Mini (osx 10.6) on same 1TB Time Capsule.
See > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html Do it on the Mac that shows that error message

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac
How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
Thanks!
JohnYou often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it. -
Using Time Capsule and Mac Mini to replace a PC.
I have 4 macs of various vintage in the house and 1 PC. I use the rather robust PC as the server for my itunes library. I'm fully uploaded to iCloud. I'd like to replace this final PC with a Mac Mini but none have a harddrive large enough to accomodate my iTunes library. (about 785G of music and video) Can I use a Time Machine as the storage device for my iTunes library? Can I connect the Time Machine and Mac Mini via Thunderbolt for fast data access? Also, if I can use the Time Machine for storage of the iTunes library, should I consider the iCloud to be my "Back Up" or should I get an additional Time Machine for back up? Also, I use and AirPort Extreme as my wireless router with 2 AirPort Expresses to expand my wifi network. Can I simply add Time Machine to my existing network or will I need to replace the AirPort Extreme with the Time Capsule?

Don't use Time Capsule for media storage.. it is not suitable and although pressed into service it is a pain. (Time Machine is software backup on the computer and is completely unrelated to the TC).
The problem with using Time Capsule to Time Capsule, is simple.. it doesn't have any software to do it.. The TC is a backup device.. not a NAS. Do not try and use it as a NAS.
You can add a TC to the network without doing much.. just bridge the TC and it will work fine plugged into the AEBS.. but again it is expensive waste. You are buying a router with enclosed hard disk drive and turning off the router.. so all you have is a hard disk which is networked.
If you get a mini use firewire external drive.. you can get 2 or 3 TB fairly cheaply and plug it in. Then back up to a TC if you really want, but any NAS with Time Machine extensions will do the job. Or a hard drive in another Mac made available to the network. -
I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?
Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
Hope this explains.
