BER Error
I have acrobat XI with the last updates installed in a machine with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bits, and when i am triying
to sign with a digital certificate, from a CardReader (REF: CSR3310 V2), the adobe gets this error:
"Error encountered while BER decoding". How can we proced to solve this error?
The most likely scenario is that the certificate that you have has some of its internal fields malformed (a certificate is just a specially formatted block of data). Some applications are more lenient on such errors and bypass them if this app does not need the questionable fields. Because of that such certificates may be acceptable to some apps. Acrobat requires that all fields in a certificate conform to the standard, and puts up the error message that you see if it does not. Acrobat does not have a good reporting mechanism to pinpoint which field it does not like. Actually, it would be quite expensive to develop such mechanism which would have a very limited use because most Certificate Authorities produce good certificates.
You need to ask your Certificate Provider (I do not know what CSR3310 V2 is) whether they validated certificates that they produce for the use with Acrobat signing.

Slapd_poll(*) timed out and ASN.1 BER error messages
We have recently started to receive a large number of slapd_poll and ASN.1 BER error messages in our DSEE 11.1.1.7.0 errors and access logs.
The following messages appear in the access logs:
B1 - Client request contains an ASN.1 BER tag that is corrupt or connection aborted
At the same time the following slapd_poll error appears in the errors log:
DEBUG - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - slapd_poll(169) timed out
We have not made any configuration changes or updates to our DSEE installation. Do you have any tips or pointers as to what we could look at to try and determine the source and cause of the errors?Hello,
Usual cause is a LDAP client that is disconnecting without UNBINDing.
Maybe an application newley deployed or F5 load balancers sometimes

BER error - validating signature
I work for an electronic invoicing software house and we are presently having problems validating signatures within PDF signed using an RBS TrustAssured (Identrus) signature which Adobe tells me “Signature is valid, but revocation of the signer’s identity could not be checked”.
When I then go into the certificate properties revocation tab and hit the problems encountered button the error message is "Error encountered while BER decoding".
RBS say they are confident the problem is Adobe and not their certs. Any ideas what the problem is and what can be done to solve this?
FYI "Perfect PDF 6 Reader" has no problems validating.
Thanks in advance
#15. CrouchI know this is an old thread but I'm experiencing the same issue as well. Using Acrobat Reader v11.0.6 on Windows XP.
I filled out a PDF via Adobe Reader and then signed the document via DocuSign and when I open the PDF to see if it validates, I get the following error: “Signature is valid, but revocation of the signer’s identity could not be checked”.
I've tried reinstalling Reader and the issue still exists.
What's interesting is that in Acrobat at home on my Mac, the same file validates just fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

Why do I get a BER decoding error when certifying a pdf file?
I am trying to sign a PDF file with adobe acrobat pro 10.0.0. For signing I want to choose my email certificate which I use for signing and encrypting my mails. But as soon as I choose this certificate to sign a PDF, I get the following error message. I did not try other certificates, as these are mostly administrator certificates, the BlueX certificate for the smart card and the lancrypt certificate. The certificate chain seems to be ok. All the certificates are stored in the Windows certificate store.
The text of the error message is something like this (as I have the German version of the program and therefor don’t know the exact words):
Creation of this signature could not be completed.
Certificate parsing error:
Encountered while BER decoding:
This error message comes up several times and then in the end the window with the digital IDs pops up. Each time I have a look at the certificate details, I get the same error message.
Help would be appreciated.
lizz4321Hi lizz4321,
A digital ID is made up of three components; a private key, a corresponding public key, and some identifying information. The keys themselves are pretty straight forward, they are just big blobs of numbers used to encrypt and decrypt data. It's the identifying information that gets a bit tricky. On first look, the identifying information looks like plain text. You'll see your name and the issuer's name, a serial number, some dates for when the validity starts and ends. All pretty straight forward.
However, all of this information is actually formatted using something called ASN.1 (it stands for Abstract Syntax Notation) and then encoded using BER (Basic Encoding Rules). When someone creates a digital ID they can put just about anything in there. Per specifications (RFC 5280 if you wanted to look it up) some items are required, and others are optional. Each piece of information that goes into the public-key certificate (the PKC is basically the digital ID without the private key) is contained in an extension. These extensions are identified using an OID (Object ID) and conform to a specification which may either be public or confidential.
There are two possibilities in the case you are seeing. Either, some of the information that Acrobat knows about was formatted or encoded incorrectly, or, there is an optional entry that Acrobat doesn't understand how to decode. My guess is it's the latter possibility. There is a rule that states if an extension is marked as critical, and the application using the public-key certificate (in this case the application would be Acrobat), doesn't understand the extension, then the application is supposed to reject the certificate. It could be the former case (badly formatted data), but without seeing the certificate all I can do is guess.

Error encountered while BER decoding Digital Signatures
Hello -
I work for a GOV agency and we use Common Access Cards/Smart Cards to login to our PC's and we subsequently use them to digitally sign PDF documents.
We have just recently switched to Adobe Acrobat 9.x Pro. Before this, we had Adobe 7.x Pro and had no troubles digitally signing documents, clearing those digital signature to reuse old documents, etc.
We first got Acrobat 9.x and had issues with digital signatures right away. We had to import this into the registry, which I believe I found on adobe forum.

Lately we've had trouble verifying signatures. Once we sign a document and then click the signature, we get the attached error.
Error during signature verification
Error encountered while validating
Error encountered while BER decoding
When we started to notice this we were on Acrobat 9.2. I think we may have went from 9.0 to 9.1.3 and then to 9.2 pretty quick. I removed it and installed our base load of Acrobat 9.0 and everything was working fine. I then updated to 9.1, 9.1.1, 9.1.2, 9.1.3 and none of them worked or fixed the issue. We have recently approved the update to 9.3, but that didn't fix it either. Because of this BER decoding issue, we cannot right click the signature field and clear a signature as well. Even after updates I could clear a signature field signed under Adobe 9.0.
Adobe, what should I do? Do we have a problem elsewhere, outside of Acrobat?
Again, we use smart card's to sign the documents, thus cannot change certificates.
Thanks, NickHi Nick,
When you mentioned that upgrading to 9.3 didn't fix the problem, did you mean when creating a new signature in Acrobat/Reader 9.3 or did you mean opening a previously signed file and doing the signature verification?
If you meant the later, no version of Acrobat will be able to decode the signature if it was created incorrectly, which is what I fear you are referring to. What happened was Acrobat 9.0 changed the default digest method from the older SHA-1 to the the new SHA-256, but if the device that encrypts the digest (the actual signing operation) cannot handle the larger digest Acrobat is supposed to fall back to the older, smaller SHA-1 digest. There was a bug where Acrobat wasn't re-computing the digest if the smart card couldn't handle SHA-256 and creating a corrupt signature. Once this corrupt signature is written out to the PDF file there is no getting around it. Update 9.3 fixes the problem at signature creation and you should be able to successfully sign using your CAC card, but sadly there is no fixing the existing corrupt signatures.

Ber Decoding error in embedded OCSPResponse
Hi,
I'm trying to sign Pdf using iText and I'd like to embed the OCSPResponse in the autheticated attributes of the SignerInfo.
When the document is validated online by Reader everything is ok. The offline certificate status verification is successfull using the embedded crl, but it fails to check the embedded OCSPResponse because of "a BER decoding error". I can't figure out what the error is....
You can download my PKCS7 files (one contains only the OCSP response, the other has both the OCSP and the crl) here:

Repair Sysvol Replication - it is broken.

Error while updating Group Policy
Hello All,
I get the below error while updating the group policy on the user machin.
C:\Users\905288>gpupdate /force

User Policy update has completed successfully.
The following warnings were encountered during user policy processing:
Windows failed to apply the Internet Explorer Zonemapping settings. Internet Exp
lorer Zonemapping settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "Mor
e information" link.
Computer Policy update has completed successfully.
For more detailed information, review the event log or run GPRESULT /H GPReport.
html from the command line to access information about Group Policy results.
Is there a way I can find which group policy is causing this issue?> Do you want me to give you those site details as well?
Hm - not really, I have no error with zone assignments. It's you with
the error :)
Verify your site entries against

- most probably, some of them do not adhere to the allowed wildcard rules.

Hi,
When copying a GPO I get this error
[Warning] The security principal [Local Admins] cannot be resolved. The task will continue; however, there might be unresolved security principals in the destination GPO.
This has never occurred before so not sure what has changed. I cannot see the [Local Admins] listed in the delegation etc. So no idea where this is referenced.
Any ideas on how to resolve.

Check "Restricted Groups" and also "Services", "Files" and "Registry" in
computer config - policies - windows settings - security settings.
The GptTmpl.inf file (containing the above settings) contains the string
"Local Admins" as a group name, and this name does not resolve to a SID.

I am unable to log into the iTunes store or my account. I keep getting this message. I ran Secure Link to the diagnostics and it said "Secure link to iTunes failed", so then I followed the directions that the Apple website gives, but still no luck. A
