Best combination for adjusting B&W scanned Tif image files

Hi,
I have found it easy to use the many adjustments available in LR 2.3 to get great looking B&W images from RAW files but I have not yet figured out how to get great looking tones from the adjustments available for monochome image Tif files.
Anyone have a suggestion on the best way to work on these in LR?

TIFF files a treated differently "under the hood", because they are demosaiced gamma-ecoded files. But I think that you roughly have to do the same things thgat you used to do to Raws (Exposure, blacks, contrast, curves etc.), maybe with different values, because of different starting points for RAW vs non-RAW files.
In case you're wondering why the grayscale mixer is not available — that's because the TIFFs are greyscale and therefore have no color channels to mix.
Perhaps, using localized adjustments to get good tonality is a good way to go too. hat would be a good equivalent of traditional darkroom dodging and burning.

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

  • Want to convert  tif image file into jpg image file , pls help me

hey coders, i want to convert a tif image file into a jpg image file , can u all help in this

In it's simplest form, it's two lines of code.
    BufferedImage bi = ImageIO.read(/*the tif file*/);
ImageIO.write(bi,"jpeg",/*output file*/);Though, you need to install [JAI-ImageIO|https://jai-imageio.dev.java.net/binary-builds.html] read the tif file into a BufferedImage.

  • Best method for adjusting a movie clips brightness?

Can someone share their method for adjusting the brightness of a Movie Clip?  With code of course : )
    thanks!

under AS3 you can do this using the 'brightness' property of the Color class, as in:
    import fl.motion.Color;
    var color = new Color();
    color.brightness = 0.5;
    myMC.transform.colorTransform = color;
(ps. the range is from -1.0 to 1.0 negative being 'darken', positve being 'lighten')

  • What is the best combination of read and write objects to binary files ...

    Hi everyone,
what are the best combination of read and write objects to read/write a record of customers from a binary file. I should be able to use StringTokenizer. I am bit confused with all these Stream reader and writers.
    abdul

    You are, indeed, confused:
o StreamTokenizer works on character input, not binary input.
o Readers and Writers in general work on character streams, not binary.
That leaves you various input streams and output streams for reading binary data.

  • "Always Open In..." View Options for Root Level of a Disk Image File

I ran into a problem/bug tonight that I can't find listed anywhere and was wondering if anyone else has encountered it. I am using Snow Leopard (now 10.6.1), upgraded from the last revision of Leopard.
I create DVD-R sized disk images with Disk Utility (using "Mac OS Extended" only w/o Journaling) for saving downloaded files. Because of the number of files on this disk, I create single-letter folders (for alphabetical filing) and set up these disk images to "Always Open In List View". For the individual folders, I can set these to "Always Open In List View" without a problem. However, for the "root level" of these disk images, I can only access "Always Open In Icon View" no matter which view option is selected.
For previously created disk images that were already set to "Always Open In List View", these show the previously set "List View" at the disk image "root level" as expected. But if I uncheck the box, it immediately goes to "Always Open In Icon View". And like before, no matter which view option is selected, I can never get back to "Always Open In List View". Note also that I can set this option as expected for "root levels" of real disks - this only seems to be a problem with the disk image files.
I had no problems at all with this under Tiger or Leopard. I've only run into this now under Snow Leopard. The upgrade tonight to 10.6.1 hasn't seem to affect this problem.
So should I be doing something differently now to get this option to reappear, a possible conflict with something on my computer or is this a bug with Snow Leopard? Can anyone else duplicate this issue?

Additional info, in case anyone is running into this issue...
If I do the following with the "root level" of the disk image, I can set the "Always Open in List View" option.
    1. Open the "root level" view of the disk image - for me, it always opens in icon view. Then, select "Show View Options" from the View menu.
    2. Check the "Always Open in Icon View" box. While leaving this dialog open, select "as List" from the View menu.
    3. Uncheck the "Always Open in Icon View" box. It will instantly turn into "Always Open In List View". Recheck this box immediately, then close dialog. This will make the setting stick.
I've been able to repeat this situation several times. I might be wrong, but it sure acts like a small bug to me. Hope this helps anyone else who might have encountered this issue.

  • Best practices for working with large placed bitmap images?

    Hey all,
I need some advice on the best way to approach building these files. I've been working on some banners that are very large: 3 x 7 feet.
Each banner has a simple vector graphic treatment at the top and bottom (rectangle with a different colored rule on top, and vector logo) and a small amount of text, just a URL and a headline. The headline is type (not converted to outlines) and usually has some other effect applied to it, say a drop shadow or outer glow. Under these graphics is a full bleed image. The placed images need to be 150ppi at actual size, so they're honking big, sometimes up to 2GB. Once the layouts are approved, they have to go to a vendor for output.
The Illustrator docs are really large, and I've read in other threads how to combat that (PDF compatibility, raster settings). But even still, does anyone have any insight into the best way to deal with these things? The dimensions are large, and then the images are large, and it just makes for lots of looking at the spinning ball of death...
If it were me, I'd build them in InDe, but the vector graphics need to be edited for each one, and I so don't like to do that in InDe unless forced. To me, it's still ultimately a page layout app, not a drawing app. (Old school here.)
FYI, our machines are all MBPs with 8G ram and the latest Intel Core 2 Duo chips, 2.66 and 2.8GHz. If we keep the files local (as opposed to working on the server) it should be fairly zippy... No?
    Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

You can get into memory trouble with very large placed pdf files. Tiffs too.
This has to do with the preview, which contains much more information than you need for working with.
On the other hand if you place EPSs and take care not to turn on overprint preview you can get away with huge files.
If you do turn on overprint preview your machine will slow down a lot and the file may become totally unmanageable.
Compare this with to InDesign where you can control the quality of the preview. A hi-res preview will slow you down and most often you don't need it anyway.
I was working (in Illie) the other day on much larger files than you mention – displays for whole walls – and had some considerable trouble until I reverted to the old EPS format. They say it's dying but it ain't dead yet .

  • What are the best practices for average size of an Adobe PDF file on a Web Server to be downloaded?

We know at a certain point, an extremely large file can be slow in downloading/accessing from a web site, and lessens the end-user's experience.  How large is too large? What is a good average or suggested size for Adobe PDF files in general?
    Thank you for any guidance.

I'm sure it varies depending on one's opinion but we have a policy that they should be under 1- 1.5MB. This isn't always posible of course. Our PDF's are mostly informational and contain little or no graphics.
I would say that it greatly depends on the PDF. If you get up over that size, you should do your best to optimize it for your users. Sometimes you can only do so much.

  • Best Practices for Placing Microsoft Word (doc or docx) Files?

What is the best way to place Word files into InDesign CS3?
Every time I place a Word file into InDesign, ID applies unwanted character styles and paragraph overrides to all of my text. For example, if I place a Word document with "Pal-Body" as the paragraph style, ID places the text with the *character* style "Pal-Bold" applied to all of the text, and ID applies an override to all of the paragraphs to remove the bold.
Essentially, the text almost looks correct since the paragraph override undoes the bold caused by the unwanted character style. But "almost correct" is not good enough, so I have to manually remove the override, remove the character styles, and reapply any character styles to the text that are supposed to be there.
This happens regardless of whether I select "Use InDesign Style Definition" or map the styles from Word to InDesign.
By the way, my styles in Word are exactly the same as InDesign. I saved my InDesign template as an RTF file, and then saved that as a DOT Word Template.
Also, I didn't seem to have this problem with InDesign CS2.
What is going on and how do I fix it?

There are a bunch of reasons why you might get paragraph overrides on imported text. In my case, it's because Word appends styling information for all complex & Asian text to my styles exported from ID. When I place the revised (or translated) RTF, I get paragraph overrides. I just clear 'em all at once. It almost always snaps back to the specs I set in my original ID doc.
Every once in a while, I'll get some Normal or some auto-named Word style gibberish in my ID doc; it's usually faster to go and fix the styling in Word and re-import than it is to try to fix it in ID.
What happens when you select all text and clear all overrides? If you don't get what you want, then probably new style info is being auto-generated while you work in Word. To test this: Export your RTF, and then place it again without opening it up in Word. If you don't find any paragraph overrides when you do this, then you can assume that the way you're working in Word is causing this. When I roundtrip through Word in this way, I always examine my styling before saving and placing, and there's always something to fix.
Also, you don't want "Available Styles" you want "Formatting in use." It's a dropdown at the bottom of the sidebar in Word. That will hide "Normal," if that style does not appear in your doc.

  • Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

    Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)
    • Don't know what settings to use.
    • Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file, using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? Are images unreliable in general? or where my glitches abnormalities?---Can the images hold collections of files or do they become more unrealiable the bigger they get (what I fear). I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept  a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.
    Thanks for your help!

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?

  • What's the best way for me to set up an image server for my college?

    Here's the deal:
I have a graduate fellowship at this university in the film and media department and the old server admin left. We have a handful of labs that each have their own software configuration, so we have an image for the undergrad lab, one for the grad lab, etc.
For the past 2 years we've been imaging computers by hand on external drives and laptops, but it's super inefficient. I would really like to be able to throw these images on a server and just do it that way ... all at once.
I tried this on a non OSX Server computer (downloaded the apps from Apple) and it didn't work. I suppose I need a real OSX Server, which we have somewhere.
I've watched a few tutorials but they don't seem to give me quite what I need, which isn't to do a fresh install of an OSX, but to be able to "deploy" (?) specific images to specific computers on the network. Any help would be amazing, and you'd be helping a bunch of college students out...
    Thanks,
    G

If your "server" is new enough to run Mountain Lion, you can purchase the OS X Server app from the Mac App store and you'll have everything you need to host a NetInstall (NetBoot) server.
If your machine does not support Mountain Lion, you'll need to purchase the appropriate Mac OS X Server software (i.e. Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server)
From there you can host NetInstall or NetRestore images, depending on your preferred workflow, which can be created using System Image Utility.
As Richard points out you can also use Deploy Studio which, again depending on your preferred workflow, might simplify things.

  • Is Aperture 3 the best software for working on a databse of images from different photographers?

    Hi everybody,
I have only been using Aperture for a few months and am unsure of its suitability for this project.
It seems to me that Aperture is designed for the photographer who wants to work on his own photos. I need to select, re-name, add metadata, keyword & eventually improve photos & re-size photos to be used on a website. Photos come from all over the world & different copyright names & rights.
In my previous job, I  used XnView for PC for the selection, renaming & metadata process  & Extensis Portfolio for adding keywords & Photoshop for working on technical improvements, I would like to know whether somebody out there uses Aperture (3) for much of this process.
Can you share an ongoing project over 2 different computer owned by 2 different people in Aperture 3 updating each simultaneously?
I will work on some photos on my computer and other photos at my client's house. I presume that I will have to export the photos that I work on on my computer to my USB stick in order to be able to read the information that I have saved on my computer on her computer??. It seems that even if one chooses to save photos to the original file and thus work on 'managed masters', it doesn't save over the original file. I have just done some more work on this photo database on my computer I decided to save to 'referenced master', ie: the aperture library.
However, when I want to continue working on this big project, I want to update the aperture photo library on my client's Aperture library, do I have to export the work I have done in my computer in Aperture to my USB stick and then re-import on the other computer to keep all the images up-to-date, this will be an ongoing situation. Can this work? I cannot see a way of joining the Aperture library from 2 computers in another way.
I have just read this article: http://www.apertureexpert.com/tips/2010/2/12/aperture-3a-game-changer-multiple-m acs-syncing-projects-more.html
It's very good but, I still don't understand how to take my edited images worked on in Aperture from my computer to my client's one. Do I have to connect the computers and if so how is this done?
I have also read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7863
If I want to constantly update each Aperture library when switching computers, do I have to follow this procedure of exporting the photos as a library from one computer to another with the updated images?
I really appreciate any clear help I can get from this forum.
    Thank you in advance!

Aperture would be fine for a single editor editing images from multiple photographers. It would not work well (if at all) for multiple people trying to edit the same library.
    so the answer to this:
Can you share an ongoing project over 2 different computer owned by 2 different people in Aperture 3 updating each simultaneously?
    is no.
I will work on some photos on my computer and other photos at my client's house.
The images at your client's house will be from where? Will the client have  Aperture running in the house on there computer?
Apart from those two the rest of your post is a bit impenetrable.
But a few thoughts you can mull over:
You could put the Aperture library on an external drive and carry the drive between locations. If you wanted to leave the library of a part of the library there you could copy to the clients drive (if you're leaving the whole thing) or else export the projects/albums/images as a library and have the client import that into there library (or just run it as a standalone library)

  • Best Practice for Many Complex Elements In One PNG File

I use Fireworks all the time, but I'm still embarrasingly ignorant on how to do some things property.
For instance, when I do mockups of a new customers homepage, there may be many small or medium sized complex objects on the page.  By "objects" I mean like lots of modules advertising their different services, and each module has its own graphics, text, backgrounds, etc all with lots of different effects applied.
Should all of these things reside in one large png file, or does Fireworks offer some way for me to create some of these as separate png files and just drop an "instance" of them into the main file?  I read something about adding files to the Common Library, but I will only need these files for one single customer so that may be overkill.
Or do I even need to worry about separating them at all and should just continue having everything for a single customer in one big single png file?
Please let me know if my question is not clear.

In reading a bit further, it looks like a good option for me might be to just select everything that makes up a specific module and just "group" it. That way I can move it around and turn it off and on easier.
So I'm thinking that unless theres something Im going to reusing more than once in a document (which in this case I'm not) then its fine to have everything all in one png?  And the only time I use the Common/Document Library is when i'm reusing things?
I'm just trying to wrap my head around what all my options are in Fireworks, as so far my experience is limited to just dragging around rectangles and shapes and stuff on one single canvas to create website mockups.

  • How do I add meta tag data to a TIF image file

I'd like to add information such as camera type, shutter speed, and other measurement parameters to image files that I'm creating with my IMAQ application. I have not found a good source of information on how to accomplish this. Does anybody else have any suggestions, leads or pointers?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Derek

I've looked at IMAQ Write Image and Vision Info File 2.vi. According to the documentation, "Writes an image, along with extra vision information associated with the image, to a PNG file. This extra vision information includes overlay information, pattern matching template information, and calibration information. Note that this vision information can only be saved with the PNG file format."
I have used the Write Custom Data.vi to write several keys to the image, before using the Write Image and Vision Info VI noted above. It does not seem that the keys can be read as metadata from the file by windows or other applications.
It is discussed on LAVA at
    http://lavag.org/topic/5297-embedding-additional-txt-in-a-png-file-imaq-82/
It seems like the solution should be quite simple.... not there yet.
