Best email solution in Windows

I am a Mac guy, but my wife wants to stick with Windows XP. So be it. Currently I have a pop mail client that I network in my home, and she likes the ability to get the mail from any of the computers. She is now interested in an iPhone. I am trying to figure out the best way to allow syncing of all the data between the phone, contacts, and mail. She has a pop account with SBCGlobal. There is no imap with them. So, it looks to me like the best way to go is for her to use the webmail interface for the computers, rather than the email clients, and then use the mail client on the iPhone. When doing this, can you see all the mail, including the sent mail? Any other ideas for a good solution? I know that the iPhone will sync with Outlook, but I don't want to use Outlook for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the inability to network it with the other computers. What are others doing? Any ideas here?

OK, so if I use an IMAP enabled account (which sbc sadly does not provide), then I can use that to sync mail across multiple computers and the iPhone with an IMAP compliant client, such as Thunderbird.
Correct.
Yahoo provides a free account for iPhone customers which can be accessed as an IMAP account with the iPhone's email client but this account cannot be accessed with an email client on a computer. On a computer this account can be accessed via webmail only.
When sending a message with an IMAP account with the iPhone's email client or with any email client, it is placed in the account's Sent mailbox after the message is successfully sent which is stored on the server. There is an account preference setting to store the account's Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes/message on the server with the email client used to access the account.
There have been a number of reports here regarding problems with Yahoo email accounts but not with a Gmail account.
A Gmail account can be accessed as an IMAP account with the email client on your computer such as with Thunderbird and as an IMAP account with the iPhone's email client, Gmail includes a good spam filter on the server and can be accessed via webmail using a browser as with any other account and is free. The free Yahoo account for the iPhone sends advertisements in the footer of the message which cannot be turned off and Gmail does not.
The iPhone includes a Gmail preset when creating the account with the iPhone's email client. Selecting the Gmail preset creates the account as an IMAP account - enter in the name, email address and account password and the incoming and outgoing mail server settings are set up automatically.
I would opt for a free Gmail account over a Yahoo account.

  • Best email solution for the iPhone

After having messed with this since Friday, I've concluded that GMail is the best solution for iPhone email as of today. Let me explain.
Yahoo Push would be the best if I could specify a different reply-to address. As it stands now, having my emails come from a @yahoo.com address is not acceptable. It seems Yahoo IMAP is the only IMAP that supports push (a marketing decision apparently moreso than a technical one), so push is out until Yahoo or Apple come to their senses.
AT&T is not offering any email options through their service. I used to have mymmode email but that was years ago, and cingularme is down for some reason. Apparently AT&T wants your money for your voice business, but take your email needs elsewhere.
Enter GMail. IF you configre GMail using the GMail option on the iPhone, it forces a @gmail.com address too. However, you can use the Other option and configure using the GMail incoming server (pop.gmail.com), and you can specify the user name ([email protected]) but a different address ([email protected]).
Now, this seems to work only if you use an outgoing server OTHER than GMail's (smtp.gmail.com). During my testing I sent an email and it seemed to come from [email protected] even though I had specified a different address in the Address field. I did not test much as I have another outgoing email option.
As I have Verizon FIOS at home, I can use my outgoing.verizon.net server authenticating using my Verizon.net address. The added bonus here is that it works in either WiFi or Edge, as Verizon's server doesnt care where you are as long as you authenticate.
My email IDs are overrun with SPAM and GMails SPAM filters are excellent. this has the added bonus of cutting down on unwanted email on the iPhone.
    Thoughts?

I am essentially doing the same thing for my Exchange account, which SMTP server can't be reached while off of the campus. I use AT&T's own SMTP server for wireless (cwmx.com, I think), and it doesn't change my From: address, so it shows as though I sent it from my campus's Exchange server. Very handy indeed!

  • Best export solution for windows clients

    Hi,
I need to regularly make files playable & editable on windows machines of all different specs/os versions for various clients.
I've been going to AVI at DV PAL codec, using MPEG Streamclip (cos I like the batch processing), but I've recently started having problems with large files (20 - 30Gb) lately. i hav a test windows box, and Windows Media Player won't open the large files.
I experimented with doing these in Quicktime Pro & in Visual Hub as well. QT Pro gave me nil picture. Visual Hub gave me a 4 Gb file and truncated the rest of the movie.
I've been doing a bit of reading and experts on forums like this keep saying words to the effect "Why are you going to AVI which is obsolete & not supported?"
I have PC based editor friends on Vegas & Premiere, and they say they need AVI.
I could go to WMV as I have Flip for Mac Studio (and Visual hub)..
What I really need is advice on a "lowest common denominator codec/container" combo that plays on Windows media player, so clients can marvel at their home movies, as well as can translate to most lower end PC editing packages, like Windows Movie Maker, Premiere Elements, Ulead, etc., when they decide they want to edit them.
I thought AVI @ DV would be the go..
    Any ideas gentlemen?
    Pete

    Hi kirk,
    ..thanks for your reply.
It's not a Fat32 problem - I am well aware of that limit. I bought Paragon to be able to write to NTFS from my Mac. Anyway, these files are failing to play back on the Mac that made them.. from the desktop..
I have an imac 17" intel that also has Mpeg Streamclip on it and it's working absolutely fine..
So I was wondering if maybe a software update that has been done on my main machine and maybe hasn't been done of the 17".
Or maybe a hardware issue - My main Mac might be dying or something..
I have the Flip for Mac Studio, and also Virtual Hub, so I can make WMVs - the point is would I want to unless a client specifically requested it? (I've had some TV stations ask for WMVs!)
I thought AVI was the best choice for my clients to be able to future edit their files. Even those who do not choose to edit will burn their own DVDs, so I wouldn't think that H.264 would be a good choice for that, even though I personally really like that codec for other purposes.
One reason I was considering WMV for all PC clients is that then they could all open the files,no matter what their hardware/OS version.. and at least edit the files in Windows Movie Maker. Maybe if they want to edit in Premeier or such, and it wants AVIs, then they can download the PC version of Mpeg Streamclip and do it themselves..
    Any ideas?..

My boss is using Mac machine, whenever I send email from my windows machine he receives email as winmail.dat, is there any solutions for this ?

Upgrading my work PC is NOT an option, but I'd like my Mac to be able to recognise the attachment for what it is
Let see, you are using a proprietary file format that is only supposed to work with Outlook. It doesn't work for millions of Windows or Mac or Linux email users that depend on other email programs like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, webmail, etc.
Microsoft has had to publish instructions so that their program's users can make themselves compatible with the rest of the world.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290809
You are causing your own problem by not making a simple change in your program's options. Changes in the Outlook preferences can be made either Globally or by the Recipient.
Follow these steps in Outlook 2007 to turn off TNEF:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. Click the Mail Format tab.
    3. In the Compose in this message format box, click Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.
Don't know of a better way to fix this problem for everyone concerned. Even if you get the fix to work with your machine, you will not enable all of the people receiving your emails to be able to work with you. That's a losing battle that's been caused by Microsoft.
Now if Microsoft created a Mail plugin for other email programs like they do for their video format's and services (flip4mac, Office Live Plugin, etc), then I would consider using their email program to deal with my clients. Until then, I need to be compatible with many different programs in other countries, on different platforms. Maybe that's going to change when they bring out the new Office 2011 with Outlook for the Mac...

  • Scan to PDF files too large! - Why?? Solution for Windows - How about Mac? (HP-8630)

Scanning a document to a PDF file of reasonable size has been addressed many times - it is always an issue! My wife is a realtor and frequently needs to scan multiple page documents. I found an actual solution last night:
27 page letter-size B&W document - Scan to PDF on my HP-8630 AIO using HP software at 300dpi, small file size, BW: 27MB! Too big to email.
Solution (in Windows 7 at least), if you have Adobe Acrobat:
Open Adobe Acrobat, go to File Menu -  Create - PDF from Scanner - Configure Presets. Select and configure "Black and White Document":
Select TWAIN device (NOT WIA) as the scanner; black and white, 300dpi, file size one notch to left (smaller) from center, check "optimize after scan". Select paper size and one- or two-sided scanning. Uncheck "make searchable". Save the preset. (The TWAIN driver was apparently installed with the HP installer, since I did not have to look for it.)
After placing pages in the Doc Feeder,  go to File Menu, Create - PDF from Scanner - Black and White Document. Watch the magic!
File size 768k!  Quality indistinguishable from the 27MB version, sharp and clear, all 27 pages! Really!
Using the HP software, using a lower resolution or sliding the file size slider to smaller makes a muddy scan, and the file  is still huge compared to the Acrobat technique. MUCH worse quality than the Acrobat 768k version.
Interestingly, using Acrobat to open the 27MB scan and "PRINT" it to the PDF Printer reduced the size to 10MB, with no change in appearance. "Save as smaller PDF" did not reduce the size further.
What gives, HP?? What can Acrobat do  to scan from your AIO that you can't do?
I tried on my Mac as well - we use both. No go. On Mac OSX 10.10.1 with latest HP drivers, Acrobat does not see any TWAIN or other driver from within the dialog box described above. Scanning from HP software again yields about 1MB per page.
Anyone know how to make Acrobat see the scanner on Mac?

    Hi @JosephWit ,
I see by your post that you are having issues with the PDF scanning size being too big. I will do my best to assist you with this issue.
The drivers for 10.10 are installed by the Apple Updates. Did you install the 10.9 drivers or are did up run the Apple Updates to install the printer?
Uninstall the 10.9 printer software and run the Apple Updates to install the proper drivers. Then you can scan with the Apple Software.
Connect the printer to the Mac by a USB cable and run the Apple Updates to install the printer drivers.
Go to the Apple, About this Mac, click on the Overview tab and select Software Updates.
Go to the Apple, Printers and Scanners, delete the USB drivers and disconnect the USB cable.
Then add the wireless printer as a Bonjour printer if the printer is networked.
Click on the + sign, highlight the printer, below beside Use: make sure just the printer name is listed. (you might have to click on the drop down to select your printer from the list)
Here is a document for Scanning in OS X v10.10 Yosemite Without HP Software.
If you are having issues with Adobe, run the updates. Product updates.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • Error 1721 on repair/uninstall/reinstall of Lenovo Solution Center Windows 8 64-bit

    Hello,
I am seeking a solution to a problem with Lenovo Solution Center on a Lenovo W530 machine running Win 8 64-bit.
It was not updating the warrantee information, and so I attempted an install with the newest version of the program. It refused to uninstall. Lenovo support then decided that the best approach was to eliminate the directory containing the program.
Now I still have the program listed in my installed programs, but there is nothing I can do with it. It does not appear on my desktop (not surprisingly) but does not uninstall and using the new install package does NOT provide the option of install, but solely to uninstall or repair, neither of which works - giving the error 1721 message.
Next steps? (Tier 2 was to phone me over 1 week ago - no call....).
    Gary
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After trying al the hints without effect, the last hint with the "MS FixIt"
    -Tool finally solved the problem!!!!!
It found 2 older {xxxxxxxxxxxxxx} registry entries from 2 former manual
updates which caused the problem. I had to run it 2 times for removing all
    error-causing problems.
After that ,the last version of the Lenovo Solution Center Windows 64-bit
package was able to install perfectly and is now running without any
    problems .
This solution I was looking for the last 3-4 months!!!!!!!
Thanks very very much ,for your perfect & profound help!
May I post this full solution letter of yours into the Lenovo forum, plse.??
I saw many people with the same 1721-fault searching for help too!
    Again many thanks

  • What is the best way to run windows on my mac?

What is the best way to run windows on my mac?
I have a particular program that i need to run, and it only runs on windows. I have a macbook pro

As Templeton noted, it depends and will at least be somewhat subjective.
There are basically three options out there.  You can use a Windows emulator (Wine or the commercial version of it, Crossover Office), use Boot Camp to "dual boot" or use virtualization software (Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox).  Each has its advantages or disadvantages.
The Windows emulators have the advantage of being the one option that doesn't need the purchase of a copy of Windows.  Unlike Boot Camp, but like the virtualization options, this allows you to run Windows programs and OSX programs side by side.  The big problem, though, is that it is the least compatible option--a lot of Windows software either has "issues" or will not function at all.  The Crossover website has information on which programs are known to work and how well they are known to work.
Boot Camp is the option that Apple ships OSX with.  You'll need a copy of Windows to install into the partition.  You'll effectively divide your disk into two parts and have two machines.  The major advantages are, first, you don't need to acquire separate software *AND* the Windows license.  As well, it's the highest performance Windows system.  What you have is truly a Windows machine.  That's both the good and the bad--you aren't going to be able to use OSX software at the same time, and you have to reboot to get back to OSX.  I've always thought it was best for someone who likes the Apple hardware and wants to use it for a Windows box--in that case Boot Camp is clearly a great solution.
Finally there's virtualization which seems to be the most popular way to handle Windows, especially if you need to run one vertical market package.  It has the advantage of allowing you to use your OSX software at the same time, and the virtualization gives an extremely high level of compatibility.  About the only thing that won't run is a virtualization package (and there's not a lot of reason to run that in a Windows VM).  There is a performance hit compared to Boot Camp, but it's minimal for all but the most demanding applications (that being high end games).
It will chew up RAM on the OSX machine, but if you have at least 4 GB of RAM it will probably be manageable, especially if you only need to run one Windows program.
You will need both a virtualization program (there are three major ones) and purchase Windows.  Two of three programs are commercial packages (Parallels and VMWare Fusion), while the other is an open source option (VirtualBox).  Virtual Box has the advantage of being free, but it's by far the least polished of the group.
Which way is best?  As was noted, it depends.  I run VMWare Fusion on my machines, and I have used CrossOver Office for limited purposes.  I've not yet seen, in my use pattern, a reason to go to Boot Camp but I certainly can see cases where it might make sense.

  • Best Email Sync options

right about to jump ship to Iphone.
currently running blackberry with enterprise server.
if i switch to iphone whats the best email option? syncing?
    should i go .mac?
    is it completely compatable?

Don't know what the best option is, but these work for me:
    For mail
    1. I connect to an exchange server via Imap (work) which auto-updates very 15 mins (or can manually update)
    2. I have a pop connection to Gmail
    3. I have an Imap connection to my home mail server
I could use .Mac to sync my Mac mail, but doesn't add anything
For contacts and calendar, I sync from Outlook on my work PC (Windows, boo!). I'm still experiementing to work out whether I'm better using the iPhone to sync up my Mac iCal/Address Book, or whether to use Plaxo (free, syncs iCal, Address Book, Outlook, loads of other stuff.
For tasks, I sync Outlook at work to Plaxo, and then use Safari on the iPhone. Not great but better than a poke in the ey with a sharp stick

I second what Kate Li said.  There's no need for a registry cleaner!  Don't do it! I run Windows systems for years and they keep running as light and fast as when they're new.
What I *do* recommend is regularly reviewing the list of programs set to run in the background using a tool to show you what starts in various ways called Autoruns, which can be found here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
This tool can be used to disable things you don't need.

  • Verizon Email accounts and Windows 8 Mail App

I will be upgrading to Windows 8 and will like to use the Windows desktop maill app for my Verizon.net account.
However, in all of the preview editions of this app, including the one I upgraded to today, the app does not support POP3 mail accounts. I does support IMAP accounts.
They suggest that I contact my email vendor to see how I can retrieve my email by configuring it as an IMAP or an EAS account.
Does anyone know how to set one of these up for Verizon.net mail accounts?

Verizon doesn't support either of those options, you may have to use a different mail app.
Millions of users have email accounts that rely on POP3 mail servers. Many ISPs even give their users POP accounts by default, but don’t tell that to Microsoft as the company steadfastly refuses to support POP3 in Windows 8′s built-in email.
You have no particular obligation to use the built-in Windows Mail, but it is currently the only email client for Modern UI. You can install any of dozens of desktop email applications including Windows Live Essentials mail, Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird. However, if you want to use the built-in Mail with a POP account, there’s a workaround that involves routing your messages through an online service such as Gmail, Hotmail or Outlook.com.
The steps below describe how to use Outlook.com to retrieve your POP inbox in Windows 8′s Mail.

  • Adobe elements 11 Organizer.  Setting Outlook 2010 as email client.  (Windows 8 OS)

When I try to setup outlook 2010 as email client in the preferences Adobe services is the only option that will show up in the lookup list for selecting an email client.   Is there some kind of issue between Adobe organizer and Windows 8?

    MCOOK1155
Using my recently obtained Windows 8 64 bit, I have not been able to get Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer Share File Attachments or Photo Mail to work. From what I have read, Windows 8 has a problem with POP servers. But I suspect that what we are encountering goes beyond that.
At the onset, my only choice was Adobe Email Services for the Email client. After I installed Windows Live Mail 2011, I then had the choice for EMail Client of Windows Live Mail 2011 as well as Adobe Email client but neither solved the problem of no email generated.
    a. For Adobe Email Service, used three different email addresses, got valid verification codes for each, was told by the program that I was good to email, yet after the email was prepared, no email with send button was generated for emailing.
    b. I have looked at the system with two different anti-virus program...first McAfee and then Windows Defender.
    c. I have changed the send to email addresses.
    d. I have had no better luck using Windows 8 built in Mail app. In fact, my lack of success with the Photoshop Elements Photo mail feature and the Windows 8 built in Mail app was the reason for my looking for alternatives.
On a comparative note, when I use Photoshop Elements 11 in Windows 7 64 bit, I have the same problem with Adobe Email Service as the Email client. However, if Windows Live Mail 2011 is the Email client, no problems..email generated and sent successfully.
So based on my result, I would say that the answer to your question
"Is there some kind of issue between Adobe organizer and Windows 8?"
    is Yes.
If Photoshop Elements 11 support says there should be no problem with this feature in Windows 8, then I would also be interested in knowing the details of its use of the feature to get the expected Photo Mail and File Attachment results.

  • What is the best way to run windows on my Mac? And What are the pitfalls I should watch for?

What is the best way to run windows on my Mac?   What are the pitfalls/

If you need Windows as your main operating system you would be better off buying a Real Windows PC.
Running windows on a Mac is always a compromise. Whether in a Boot Camp partition or in a Virtual Machine.
In boot camp you can't easily Re-Partition and or Re-Size the drive it is installed on. You can't use both graphics cards as Apple has limited Windows to use the discrete graphics only, that is if your mac has 2 graphics cards (15" MBPs), which will shorten the battery run time in Windows.
The trackpad only has limited functions in Windows, less then is available on the Mac side and a real Windows PC.
