It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.

  • Best use of disk drives for data transfer

I have three different data "disk" drives on my system and I timed transferring 13 GB of data between. The drives are a standard 7500 RPM disk, a pair of 7500 RPM disks in RAID 0, and a solid state flash drive. The times in minutes and and seconds were as follows:
    To:| Standard | RAID 0 | Flash
    From: | | |
    Standard | 6:39 | 2:43 | 3:22
    RAID 0 | 2:46 | 4:41 | 3:33
    Flash | 2:41 | 1:51 | 16:58
The first thing to notice is that if the source and destination drives are the same then times are much longer. The Flash drive was particularly bad.
The best time was from Flash to RAID 0, but in the reverse direction the time was poorer than a standard disk, suggesting that the flash has a fast read but a slow write.
Conclusion: for disk bound operations, such as transferring DV AVI files with little or no processing use different drives if practicable. In other words, set the scratch files drive to be other than the drive with the source files on it. If possible, put your source files on a flash drive and your scratch files on a RAID 0 drive.
Edit: Sorry for the poor table layout. Two or more consecutive spaces get converted into a single space for some reason.

You can use the error-cluster to detect the end of your queue. The erroroutput of the shared variable will return a -2220 Warning, if it reads a value it has read already before. I attached a modified example and saved it for 8.2 I hope you can open it.

  • Installing a Firewire External Disk Drive - Issue

Running on Lion. I've introduced an external 40Gb Firewire disk. I provide the necessary information then clicked on apply. Within 20 seconds after that the message "Waiting for the disks to reappear". This remains there for hours. The timeline bar is at the midpoint and hasn't moved since the message was issued. The drives are listed on the left including the FW disk but there's no partition listed under it.

iM uses a lot of harddrive space on the "start up"/internal disk, even when the project itself is located on some external drive.. make sure, you have at last 10 - 15GB free...

  • Firewire 800 external drive reccomendations for mavericks time machine?

I think I need a new back up drive after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion to Mavericks.  I like using the firewire 800 port so my others are freed up for other peripherals.  Any suggestions?  I've not been happy with the reminder that the WD I got a t the Apple store can't be read.  Any suggestions?

Are you saying that the WD drive doesn't have FW capability?
If you need to purchase a new EHD the drives suggested by Allan are very reliable.  I have 7 of them and have had no issues.

  • Hard disk drive replacements for MacBookPro

    Good morning.
I own a MBP, 2.16 Intel Duo Core.
110G (original) hard disk at about 80%; running OS 10.4.11; need to upgrade to 10.5.6 to run iLife 9 for a class at school.
    1) Have received disk error -- "Volume Header Needs Minor Repair" Error: underlying task reported failure on exit.
    2) Repair from install disk does not correct the problem.
    3) Machine is still operational although it has not been shut down either.
    4) Since I need additional disk space, why not just upgrade the disk and the OS?
    5) Will either of these disk work? and well? why or why not?
    -Model ST904304N3; SATA NCQ interface 16MB cache, 320 G
    -Model ST3500641AS-RK; 500 G bare bones (?)
    6) Any one on the deep south side of chicago (Cal City/Hammond area) work such things?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Any 2.5" serial ATA (SATA) drive will work. Buying a new hard drive is an option, since the other repair you could try would be to buy Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, both which cost a little more than a new hard drive.
I usually get my hard drives from Newegg.com, with good prices and good user comments. Here are SATA drives they carry: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035915 133&name=SATA%203.0Gb%2fs . OWC is another source, and here are their drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/SATA .
If you want to buy your own drive and have someone else install it, you might consider an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The closest one can be located at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/ . Note Apple stores won't install a drive you bring in, however, generally the authorized service providers will.

  • Will Cisco be updating the Approved Disk Drive List for firmware 1.5

    Hi
I just saw that cisco released firmware 1.5 which has support for 3TB drives. I am wondering if Cisco will be updating the list of Approved hard drives or will it now be QNAP who will be doing that?
    Thanks

An updated Cisco Hard Drive AVL has been posted. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10817/prod_maintenance_guides_list.html

If you are planning on migrating to QNAP branded firmware or have already done so, please refer to the QNAP Hard Drive AVL.

  • What's the best new replacement hard drive available for a PB 1.67GHz?

After my Leopard upgrade and some new iMovie projects I'm finally reaching the last 10 GBs of my stock 100GB drive. So I'm looking for a replacement drive. I'd really like to find a 7200 RPM drive with 16MB cache and a fast access speed. But from what I'm seeing those are only available in SARA drives.
What's the fastest and largest ATA/100 drive you've seen? Obviously I've check out the usual online retailers, but the selection has been pretty sparse.

The drive replacement went fairly smoothly. I ran into problems while removing the ribbon cable for the trackpad and keyboard from the main board. There is a very small fragile plastic clips that holds the ribbon in place. Unfortunately it broke while removing the ribbon. You could tell it just fractured like as if it was an old piece of plastic that had been sitting in the sun for years. It took about a dozen attempts to replace it and secure it in place before I was able to button everything up. Fortunately it's directly under a RAM chip, so I was able to wedge a nylon washed between the two and the pressure from the RAM is keeping it in place. The rest of the drive replacement was a breeze.
Then came the restore. Unlike what I've read, I wasn't able to do a restore by just booting off the 10.5 DVD. I had to first install 10.5 (basic install), restart and then was prompted with a restore option at boot-up.
It looks like it restored everything from my last backup. However, in launching a few common applications I use I have had to re-enter serials numbers. Which is weird because the same preferences were copied from the backup.
But the good news is I now have 75GB free and the drive is quieter then the stock one.

  • Hard disk drive replaicement

I have a Hard Disk 1 (301) error message, when turning on my laptop. It says something along the lines of "the hard disk has detected an imminent failure".
My laptop is a HP Pavilion G7-1033cl   (windows 7), purchased in 2011,  so it's out of warranty.
As far as a noticed in some other answers, I shoul replace the hard-disk for sure.
Ok, my question is: What kind of hard disk shoul I buy for replacing it? What's the best recommended?
    Thank you for your help!
    GStoicu

Whenever the Hard Disk fails with an error Hard Disk 1 [301] that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue
This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc..
HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby
Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive
Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:
Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power Adapter
Step 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 Seconds
Step 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)
Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal
If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook
If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media)
Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. • Disk drive thrashing after waking from sleep

Apple conundrum - iMac goes from sleepy to grumpy....
At times after waking from sleep mode, my disk drive thrashes for up to 3-5 minutes. The thrashing almost always includes an SSBOD. Then it stops and things seem fine.  My iMac is not backing up as I check for the TIme Machine icon activity.  I have also checked and disk permissions and keychain ae fine.
Any ideas on what is causing the disk thrashing.... and how to fix it.

  • TOSHIBA Disk Drive 000601002 in Northgate Computer

R2D2 answered Penjamin (May of 2007) concerning a TOSHIBA Disk Drive 000601002 for a Satelite computer. I need to replace the 30 MB Toshiba 000601002 03327R Disk Drive in Northgate Computer. Where can I find a replacement drive? I suppose a 30 MB to 60 MB would work fine.

To be honest Northgate Computer says not much to me but if you want to made HDD upgrade contact the manufacturer.
They can offer you info about upgrade limits and compatible parts.
If there is standard IDE HDD inside you can upgrade it with any other similar HDD. it must not be the same.
Just be sure the capacity will be recognized properly.
