Best Practice: Header Template vs Page zero

I have some information (currently stored on the header template) as below
Operator: &APP_USER. 10-JUL-2009
Version: 123.456
Screen Id: 38636.1
This information is to be displayed on all pages (and is based on application_items).
Our application is translatable into 4 other languages (so 5 in total) including russia and chinese which use different character sets.
Is it better technically to store these on page 0 rather than on the header template.

Keith,
I normally would agree with John, that this belongs in the template. But since you have to translate this stuff, this means that you would have to translate this template and have the translator or language service parse through all the HTML of the template, simply looking for the string(s) to be translated.
I'll give you a third option. Make use of the application attributes (there are 20 of them). Define an attribute named 'OPERATOR_MSG' with a value of 'Operator'. In the template, you can reference this attribute as &OPERATOR_MSG. (inclusive of the trailing period). This way, these attributes will show up in translatable text as single strings.
Also, if you want to show the date in YYYYMMDD format, you could use the reference &SYSDATE_YYYYMMDD. in your page template. I realize this is not a friendly date format, but you get it for free without having to compute it yourself.

  • What's the best practice to manage the page file?

    We have one Hyper-v Server running windows 2012 R2 with 128 GB RAM and 2 drives (C and D). It setup Automatically manage page file size for all drives. What's the best practice to manage the page file?
    Bob Lin, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Install and Configure Windows, VMware, Virtualization and Cisco on http://www.HowToNetworking.com

    For Hyper-V systems, my general recommendation is to set the page file to 1-4 GB. This allows for a mini-dump should something happen. 99.99% of the time, Microsoft will be able to figure out the cause of the problem from the mini-dump. It does not make
    sense on a Hyper-V system to set aside enough space to capture all the memory on the system because only a very small portion of that memory is used by the parent partition. Most of the memory is under control of the individual VMs.
    Yes, I had one of the Hyper-V product group tell me that I should let Windows manage it.  A couple of times I saw space on my system disk disappear because the algorithm decided it wanted all the space for the page file.  Made it so I couldn't
    patch my systems.  Went back in and set the page file to 1-4 GB and have not had any issues since.

  • What is the best practice for creating master pages and styles with translated text?

    I format translated text all the time for my company. I want to create a set of master pages and styles for each language and then import those styles into future translated documents. That way, the formatting can be done quickly and easily.
    What are the best practices for doing this? As a company this has been tried in the past, but without success. I'd like to know what other people are doing in this regard.
    Thank you!

    I create a master template that is usually void of content, with the exception I define as many of the paragraph styles I believe can/will be used with examples of their use in the body of the document--a style guide for that client. When beginning a new document for that client, I import those styles from the paragraph styles panel.
    Exception to this is when in a rush I begin documentation first, then begin new work. Then in the new work, I still pull in those defined paragraph and or object styles via their panels into the new work.
    There are times I need new styles. If they have broader applicability than a one-off instance or publication, then I open the style template for that client and import that style(s) from the publication containing the new style(s) and create example paragraphs and usage instructions.
    Take care, Mike

  • Created letter head templates with pages-open using in WORD HOW?

    please help.. i created beautiful letter head templates with iwork pages  and i am trying to give to my employee to use it ... and then they can't import or open  use from microsoft Word 2011. they do not have iwork.. possible can share templates both pages and microsoft word?  is there way to do it?  all the letter logo reflextion effect  that i sed from iwork  dont seem work in microsoft word. ;(
    or it is not possible?
    not everyone  in my office has iwork and i want them to use same letter head  i creadted from pages.. so that they can use it from thier PC.
    anyone can help me?

    Do you mean template or document? They're not the same thing.
    The template formats that Microsoft and Apple use are different (just like all their document formats). You can Export a Pages document in a Word format and send this to your employees. An employee can then save this Word document as a Word template and use it.

  • Not in JDeveloper: Lifecycle PhaseListener best practice for a single page?

    ADF Faces 10.1.3.2
    * Not using JDeveloper *
    Two questions:
    I need to add logic to the lifecycle for one page and not all of the pages in the application.
    1.) What is the best practice to write a Lifecycle PhaseListener for a single page?
    I understand that I need to extend the PageController class and override the methods I want to change, then use the new page controller in your pages.

  • What is best practice for adding copyright page, etc?

    Hi Folks,
    I'm using iBooks Author for the first time. When I added a copyright page using Insert > Pages > Section > Copyright, I get a loose page that I was able to drag in front of the table of contents. However, the copyright page now has no formatting. That is, it spans a full two-page spread without the page break in the middle, like the rest of the book. How can I get the the same format for pages before the TOC?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    iBooks Author will definitely need a code view feature to users can hack the XML manually and fix these things.
    While I don't see that happening , (a) you can show package contents and go nuts now, if you like and (b). feel free to use iBA's menu to feedback [ http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks-author.html ] for any features, changes, etc. you may have in mind for the future and (c) remember, the best defense is a good offense...best way to stay out of jams w/IBA is to not get into them in the first place...practice with different templates to see which may support specific needs.

  • Best practice to create a page sliding effect?

    I am trying to create a magazine-like app and wish to emulate ipad's spring board effect. I wonder if anybody has figured out a way to do so. Thanks a lot!

    I use the TweenLite plug in for the animation part of it but startDrag and stopDrag for the other half.
    Basically on startDrag the user drags your movie clip then you set variables that, if the drag is more than 1/3 of the page width you animate to the next slide if less than 1/3 of the page width then it jumps back to its original place. Works really well and feels just like the native iOS home screen.
    The app I am using this on is still in development. But if my post makes no sense I can add you to my development profile and send you a sample.
    Let know if it helps at all.
    BTW TweenLite is the best plug in ever, I use it for everything now.

  • Best practice for Active Directory User Templates regarding Distribution Lists

    Hello All
    I am looking to implement Active Directory User templates for each department in the company to make the process of creating user accounts for new employees easier. Currently when a user is created a current user's Active directory account is copied, but
    this has led to problems with new employees being added to groups which they should not be a part of.
    I have attempted to implement this in the past but ran into an issue regarding Distribution Lists. I would like to set up template users with all group memberships that are needed for the department, including distribution lists. Previously I set this up
    but received complaints from users who would send e-mail to distribution lists the template accounts were members of.
    When sending an e-mail to the distribution list with a member template user, users received an error because the template account does not have an e-mail address.
    What is the best practice regarding template user accounts as it pertains to distribution lists? It seems like I will have to create a mailbox for each template user but I can't help but feel there is a better way to avoid this problem. If a mailbox is created
    for each template user, it will prevent the error messages users were receiving, but messages will simply build up in these mailboxes. I could set a rule for each one that deletes messages, but again I feel like there is a better way which I haven't thought
    of.
    Has anyone come up with a better method of doing this?
    Thank you

    You can just add arbitrary email (not a mailbox) to all your templates and it should solve the problem with errors when sending emails to distribution lists.
    If you want to further simplify your user creation process you can have a look at Adaxes (consider it's a third-party app). If you want to use templates, it gives you a slightly better way to do that (http://www.adaxes.com/tutorials_WebInterfaceCustomization_AllowUsingTemplatesForUserCreation.htm)
    and it also can automatically perform tasks such as mailbox creation for newly created users (http://www.adaxes.com/tutorials_AutomatingDailyTasks_AutomateExchangeMailboxesCreationForNewUsers.htm).
    Alternatively you can abandon templates at all and use customizable condition-based rules to automatically perform all the needed tasks on user creation such as OU allocation, group membership assignment, mailbox creation, home folder creation, etc. based on
    the factors you predefine for them.

  • EPub Photobook Template for Pages?

    Does anyone have a stylish Pages photobook template that is appropriate for ePub conversion and upload to the iBookstore?
    Background: I made a photobook using the Pages best practices ePub template but it is very plain. I have one image per page that is not centered and doesn't take up the whole page. I also didn't have much luck keeping captions with inline images. Floating images were denied in the ePub conversion. I was forced to use lots of chapters because the ePub conversion limited me to 1 MB per chapter. I also tried an iPad app called eBook Magic that made a nice quality pdf but a blurry, low resolution ePub file.

    Just add a return after an inline image and type the caption underneath. If you have enough room and the captions are short they can also be to the side.
    Use before and after paragraph spacing to maintain uniform offsets from the image.

  • TDMS & Diadem best practices: what if my signal has pauses/breaks?

    I built a LV2011 datalogging application that stores lots of data in TDMS files.  The basic architecture is like this:
    Every channel has these properties:
         To = Start time
         dt =  Sampling interval
    Channel values:
         1D array of DBL values
    After datalogging starts, I just keep appending to the channel values.  And if the TDMS file size goes over 1 GB, I create a new file and start over.  The application runs continuously for days/weeks, so I get a lot of TDMS files.
    It works fine.  But now I need to change my system to allow the data acquisition to pause/restart.  This means there will be breaks in the signal (probably between 30 sec and 10 mins).  I had originally considered recording two values for every datapoint (value & timestamp) like an XY graph.  But I am opposed to this in principal because I feel it fills up your hard disk unnecessarily (twice us much disk footprint for the same data?).
    Also, I have never used Diadem, but I want to ensure that my data can be easily opened and analyzed using Diadem.
    My question:  Are there some best practices for storing signals that pause/break like this?  I would like to just start a new recording with a new start time (To) and have Diadem be able to somehow "link" these signals ... eg have it know that its a continuation of the same signal.
    Obviously, I should install Diadem and play with it.  But I thought I would ask the experts about best practice first, since I have zero Diadem knowledge.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi josborne,
    Are you planning on creating a new TDMS file each time the acquisition stops and starts again, or were you wanting to store multiple start/stop sections withing the same TDMS file?  The easiest way to handle the date/time offset is to store one waveform per Channel per start/stop section and use the "wf_start_time" Channel property that is native to TDMS waveform data-- whether you're wiring an orange floating point array or a brown waveform to the TDMS Write.vi.  DIAdem 2011 has the ability to easily access the date/time offset when it is stored in this Channel property (assuming that it is stored as a date/time and not as a DBL or a string).  If you only have one start/stop section per TDMS file, I would definitely also add a "DateTime" property to File level.  If you want to store multiple start/stop sections in a single TDMS file, I would recommend using a separate Group for each start/stop section.  Make sure you're storing the following Channel properties in the TDMS file if you want that information to flow naturally into DIAdem:
    "wf_xname"
    "wf_xunit_string"
    "wf_start_time"
    "wf_start_offset"
    "wf_increment"

    I'm seeing a hot pink background (which is my browser default
    - so that I do
    remember to declare a background color). You need to add:
    body { background-color: white;} to your stylesheet, or into
    the imbedded
    styles on your page.
    In Firefox, the very top black section, #headertop is hidden
    behind the
    header image.

    I can see the header image stretching right across the page..
    so not sure
    what color is missing there.

  • Is it a best practice to have a template with one master page?

    I am a newbie FM 11 writer and am cleaning up some unorganized books. Should I copy one set of Master Pages to all files in the book. Currently my TOC and certain other files have unique master pages. I would like to set up our books using best practices and would like input from the community. Thanks.

    There are two schools of thought on this. The specific sub-template approach or the "kitchen sink" approach.
    In the "kitchen sink" (i.e. everything, including the...) approach, the FM template is loaded with everything required for the project in a single file. It's simple to deploy, import it to all files and you're good to go. However, the author may have to deal with all sorts of superfluous tags and page layouts in some specific file types, like the cover pages, TOC, Index and other generated files. The onus is on the author to select the correct items to use from the multitude of choices.
    The sub-template approach is modular approach where one creates the various components in separate template files, e.g. paragraph and character tags, tables, page layouts, etc. and combines to create specific templates for the various book components. These component-combined templates only have the minimum that is required for each type of document component. This is a lego-like approach and it provides more flexibility (IMHO) with modifying, updating and creating new templates. This is easier (perhaps less intimidating would be a better term) for the author to use as their choices are much more limited in any given context. However, they do have to apply the correct templates to the specific book components.
    In all cases, you need to document the usage of all components in the template(s), so authors will know the intent of each and every tag, table, sttyle, page layout, etc.

  • Best Practice for Placing meta tags in HEAD of document

    Good afternoon,
    We are utilizing Oracle UCM's ability to dynamically generate pages based on page templates, region templates, and contributor data files that contributors may edit and publish. We have a specific need to include meta tags in the head section of each page that are custom to the data present in each contributor data file. Including the meta tags in the region template that pertains to a section of our website does not work, as it does not include a <head> section. Alternatively, I can not place the meta tags in the page template, as the data in each meta tag is specific to the metadata surrounding each contributor data file.
    My question is this: Is there a best practice, or Oracle-supported method of accomplishing this task? I have to believe there is some way to accomplish this, as the need for meta tags for social media sites and search engines is very common.
    Thank you very much for your time,
    Josh

    Thanks for the reply, Jiri.
    I believe that the answer is 'yes' to both of your questions above. I do have a question about the formatting of the meta tag itself, as my main question is how do I extract the needed information from a particular CDF so that it is displayed in the <head> section located in the page template.
    I have a Region Definition for the content section of my page with a 'Title' field, which a contributor can fill in, save, and create a Contributor Data File with their own specified title. Let's also say that my page template, which formats the entire page, looks like this (rough):
    <html>
      <head>
      <title>Web page</title>
      </head>
      <body>
      <!-- placeholder for header section -->
      <!-- placeholder for content section -->
      <!-- placeholder for footer section -->
      </body>
    </html>
    What would my <meta> tag look like for the following:
      <meta property="og:title" content="Title of the content section"/>
    Let's name our templates/definitions:
    Page Template: PT_META
    Region Template: RT_META
    Region Definition: RD_META
    Contributor Data File: CDF_META
    In other words, how do I extract the information included in the Contributor Data File (as well as its metadata) for use in the Page Template? Is there some sort of Idoc Script call that can be used?
    Thank you so much,
    Josh

  • Facelets template best practices

    Hi,
    As I gain more experience in JSF, I am doing things a bit differently. When I first started I was binding all components to a backing bean and using the component binding in code for various things such as multi component validation. Later I used only value bindings, and had a lot of configuration in the template:
    <select id="country" jsfc="h:selectOneMenu" value="#{user.countryCode}" validator="#{someBackingBean.country_validate}" required="true" requiredMessage="#{theme_messages['field.country']} #{theme_messages['word.required']}">
        <f:selectItems value="#{someBackingBean.countryItems}"/>
    </select>I modified that example from real code, so it might make more sense to use a converter than a validator for a country code... But anyway, there is a lot of per component configuration in my templates. When I create multiple themes/skins, this stuff has to be duplicated. When I make changes to the application, all themes have to be updated.
    I think Wicket encourages you to bind all components to the "backing bean" and do your configuration in code. Your equivalent template would look something like this:
    <select id="country" jsfc="h:selectOneMenu" binding="#{someBackingBean.countryDropDown}">
        <f:selectItems value="#{someBackingBean.countryItems}"/>
    </select>You might even leave the f:selectItems out of the template. The only challenge I foresee with this is that using JSF APIs to resolve EL to add a validator, converter, action, or whatever else into the component from code is very verbose and difficult. I asked the JSF expert group to enhance the APIs to make it easier to do everything in code, but it did not make the JSF 2.0 spec. They will consider it in a future release: [JSF API Ticket 363|https://javaserverfaces-spec-public.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=363]
    Can anyone share their experiences with facelets template complexities and best practices they have learned? If you do most of your component configuration in code, how much of it do you allow in the template? Do you allow value bindings? The f:selectItems tag?
    Thanks,
    Ryan
