Best practice to move things between various environments in SharePoint 2013

Hi All SharePoint Gurus!! - I was using SP deployment wizard to move Sites/lists/libraries/items etc. using SP Deployment Wizard (spdeploymentwizard.codeplex.com) in SP 2010. We just upgraded to SP 2013. I have few Lists and Libraries that I need to push
into the Staging 2013 and Production 2013 environment from Development 2013 environment. SP Deployment Wizard  is throwing error right from the startup. I checked SP 2013 provides granular backups but is restricted to Lists/Library level. Could anybody
let me know if SP Deployment Wizard works for 2013? I love that tool. Also, Whats the best practice to move things between various environments?

Hi Khushi,
I want to let you know that we built
SharePoint Migration tool
MetaVis Migrator that can copy and migrate to and from on-premise or hosted SharePoint sites. The tool can copy entire
sites with sub-site hierarchies, content types, fields, lists, list views, documents, items with attachments, look and feel elements, permissions, groups and other objects - all together on at any level of granularity (for
example, just lists or just list views or selected items). The tool preserves created / modified properties, all metadata and versions. It looks like Windows Explorer with copy/paste and drag-n-drop functions so it is easy to learn. It does not require any
server side installations so you can do everything using your computer or any other server. The tool can copy the complete sites or just individual lists or even selected items. The tool also supports incremental or delta copy based on the previous migrations.
The tool also includes Pre-Migration Analysis that helps to identify customizations.
Free trial is available:

Good luck with your migration project,
Mark

  • Compare BI publisher set-up between various environments

    Hi All,
    DB:10.2.0.4.0
    Oracle Apps:12.0.6
    BI Publisher version:10.1.3.0
Is there a way to Compare BI publisher set-up between various environments.
It looks like that reports are behaving differently in different environments.
Could anyone please share the steps/procedure to compare.
    Thanks for your time!
    Regards,

One option might be to use Diagnostics to print out settings from each instance, then compare them.
Pl see MOS Doc 388165.1 (11i : Oracle Application Object Library XML Publisher Data Collection Test) for details - this is for 11i but should be applicable for R12 also.

  • Best practice for maintaining URLs between Dev, Test, Production servers

We sometimes send order confirmations which include links to other services in requestcenter.
For example, we might use the link <href="http://#Site.URL#/myservices/navigate.do?query=orderform&sid=54>Also see these services</a>
However, the service ID (sid=54) changes between our dev, test, and production environments.  Thus we need to manually go through notifications when we deploy between servers.
    Any best practices out there?

Your best practice in this instance depends a bit on how much work you want to put into it at the front end and how tied to the idea of a direct link to a service you are.
If your team uses a decent build sheet and migration checklist then updating the various URL’s can just be part of the process. This is cumbersome but it’s the least “technical” solution if you want to continue using direct links.
A more technical solution would be to replace your direct links with links to a “broker page”. It’s relatively simple to create an asp page that can accept the name of the service as a parameter and then execute an SQL query against the DB to return the ServiceID, construct the appropriate link and pass the user through.
A less precise, but typically viable, option would be to use links that take advantage of the built in search query functionality. Your link might display more results than just one service but you can typically tailor your search query to narrow it down. For example:
If you have a service called Order New Laptop or Desktop and you want to provide a link that will get the user to that service you could use: http://#Site.URL#/RequestCenter/myservices/navigate.do?query=searchresult&&searchPattern=Order%20New%20Desktop%20or%20Laptop
The above would open the site and present the same results as if the user searched for “Order New Desktop or Laptop” manually. It’s not as exact as providing a direct link but it’s quick to implement, requires no special technical expertise and would be “environment agnostic”.

  • Best Practice for managing variables for multiple environments

I am very new to Java WebDynPro and have a question
concerning our deployments to Sandbox, Development, QA,
    and Production environments.
What is the 'best practice' that people use so that if
you have information specific to each environment you
don't hard-code it in your Java WebDynPro code.
I could put the value in a properties file, but how do I
make that variant?  Otherwise I'd still have to make a
change for each environment to the property file and
re-deploy.  I know there are some configurations on the
Portal but am not sure if that will work in my instance.
For example, I have a URL that varies based on my
    environment.  I don't want to hard-code and re-compile
for each environment.  I'd prefer to get that
information on the fly by knowing which environment I'm
running in and load the appropriate URL.
So far the only thing I've found that is close to
telling me where I'm running is by using a Parameter Map
but the 'key' in the map is the URL not the value and I
suspect there's a cleaner way to get something like that.
I used Eclipse's autosense in Netweaver to discover some
of the things available in my web context.
Here's the code I used to get that map:
    TaskBinder.getCurrentTask().getWebContextAdapter().getRequestParameterMap();
In the forum is an example that gets the IP address of
the site you're serving from. It sounds like it is going
to be or has been deprecated (it worked on my system
right now) and I would really rather have something like
the DNS name, not something like an IP that could change.
    Here's that code:
    String remoteHost = TaskBinder.getCurrentTask().getWebContextAdapter().getHttpServletRequest().getRemoteHost();
Thanks in advance for any clues you can throw my way -
    Greg

    Hi Greg:
I suggest you that checks the "Software Change Managment Guide", in this guide you can find an explication of the best practices to work with a development infrastructure.
    this is the link :
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/83/74c4ce0ed93b4abc6144aafaa1130f/frameset.htm
Now if you can gets the ip of your server or the name of your site you can do the next thing:
    HttpServletRequest request = ((IWebContextAdapter) WDWebContextAdapter.getWebContextAdapter()).getHttpServletRequest();
    String server_name = request.getServerName();
    String remote_address =     request.getRemoteAddr()
    String remote_host = request.getRemoteHost()
Only you should export the servlet.jar in your project properties > Build Path > Libraries.

  • Best practice to maintain code across different environments

    Hi All,
We have a portal application and we use
    JDEV version: 11.1.1.6
    fusion middleware control 11.1.1.6
In our application we have  created many portlets by using iframe inside our jspx files and few are in navigation file as well and the URL's corresponding to these portlets are different
across the environments (dev, test and prod). we are using subversion to maintain our code .
problem we are having is: Apart from changing environment details while deploying to Test and prod, we also have to change the portlet URL' s from dev portlet URL's to corresponding env manually.
so is there any best practice to avoid this cumbersome task? can we achieve this by creating deployment profile?
    Thanks
    Kotresh

    Hi.
Put a sample of the two different URLs. Anyway you can use EL Expression to get current host instead of hardcoded. In addition, you can think in using a common DNS mapped in hosts file for all environments.
    Regards.

  • Best practice for moving images between projects?

    Hey all,
I have a project that has an album inside of it. I want to move the album, containing all of the photographs to a new project. If I drag the photos individually to the new project it moves them successfully although they now don't belong to an album in their new project. If I drag the album itself it moves the album and photographs but leaves the photos in the original project as well.
Does anyone have some best practice ideas for this scenario?
Thanks in advance for any help!

As you have discovered if the drop target is the project the images move projects. If the drop target is an album the images show up in the album but do not actually move anywhere. Moving albums does nothing to move masters. So...
Select all of the images in the album. Drag them to the new project and then drag the album to the new project. Simple enough.

  • Best way to move LOB between database

I am using Oracle 10.2.0.4. Please share your experience what is the best to move LOBs between databases. Lob size is 40 gb. I have tried using data pump, and parallel insert with nologging but it is taking almost 1 hour to transfer 1 gb.
    Thanks for any suggestion.

    N Gasparotto wrote:
For data pump I am using impdp over network_link .Would be much more efficient to copy the file accross the network and then run impdp locally. Did you also tried also parallel impdp ?
Nicolas.Thank I will be trying your suggestion to move the copy. Currently do to space issue I cannot try it but I have already requested for the designated mount point.
I tried using parallel hint. Our sever had 8 cpu so I tried parallel 16. Although current parallelism was 16 ,
worker parallelism was 1. They were only 2 workers and other worker was always waiting. In other words, the two workers did not execute simultaneously. So, I guess data pump did not run parallely.
Should not more than one worker be executing simultaneously for it to run parallel? I did not understand what worker parallelism meant?

  • Does anyone have "Best Practices" to move GRC 5.2 to its own environment?

    Hello,
Has anyone else put the GRC applications on a shared server and then decided to move them?  We have been running Access Enforcer, & Compliance Calibrator on a box shared with Solution Manager.  We now have permission to put it on a separate server.  We have been looking for "Best Practices" for making this type of change.  If you have experience doing these would you be willing to share knowledge?
Also,  what little we have advise or knowledge we have found indicates "there is no way to do a J2EE system copy from a dual-stack system into a J2EE-only system."  Does anyone know if this is true?
We want to move the GRC 5.2 to its own environment before we upgrade to GRC 5.3...

    Hi Renee,
There is not best practice or methdology to move GRC AC 5.2 easily. AC 5.3 has import/export functionality in place to move most of the data from one environment to another. I will recommend you to upgrade to AC 5.3 and then move everything to new server.
Another way is to ask your BASIS person and see if he can backup and restore DB on another server.
there is no way to do a J2EE system copy from a dual-stack system into a J2EE-only system." Does anyone know if this is true? This is true.

  • Best practices for realtime communication between background tasks and main app

I am developing (in fact, porting to WinRT Universal App) an application connecting to Bluetooth medical devices. In order to support background connectivity, it seems best is to use background tasks triggered by a device connection. However, some of these
devices provide a stream of data which has to be passed to the main app in real time when it is active - i.e. to show an ECG on the screen. So my task ideally should receive and store data all the time (both background and foreground) and additionally make
main app receive it live when it is in foreground.
My question is: how do I make background task pass real-time data to the app when it is active? Documentation talks about using storage, but it does not seem optimal for realtime messaging.. Looking for best practices and advice. Platform is Windows 8.1
    and Windows Phone 8.1.

    Hi Michael,
Windows phone app has resource quotas, to prevent it from interfering with real-time communication functionality, background task using the ControlChannelTrigger and PushNotificationTrigger receive guaranteed resource quotas for every running task. You can
    find more information from
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/xaml/Hh977056(v=win.10).aspx. See Background task resource guarantees for real-time communication section. ControlChannelTrigger is not supported on windows phone, so you can have a look at PushNotificationTrigger
    class.

  • Best practices for deployment from Dev /Staging /Production in SharePoint ?

    Hi All,
What is a best practices to deploy SharePoint Portal to dev / staging / Production.
I have custom solution deployed using WSP file. But I have done some changes using sharepoint designer.
Like as Designer workflow, master pages etc.
How can I deploy my document libraries and list to dev to prod using best practices?
    Thanks
    Balaji More

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to know the best practices to deploy SharePoint Portal in different SharePoint environment.
If the site is not existing in the production server, we can save the site from the development server, and then import it to the production server.
But if the site is already existing in the production server, we should follow these steps to just add the taxonomy and content types to the production server:
Save the site from Dev as a template
Import the template as solution in Visual Studio
Remove unnecessary items from the solution(Please pay more      attention on it. If a content type/list... in the solution is existing in      the production site too, it will replace the
same object existing in the      production after deployment)
    Package the solution
Deploy the solution in the production

  • What is the best approach to setup intranet and internet sites in SharePoint 2013?

I am planning to setup a internet and intranet website for one of our client.  What is the best approach to setup this kind of environment?
Some of the users (registered users) from the internet should be able to access information in the intranet site.  I have created two web applications for intranet and internet.  Is it the right way to go forward?
    Thanks in advance! :)
    LM

    Hi Laemon,
Creating two separate web applications, one for Internet site and the other for Intranet is the right thing you have done.
    1. To properly plan creation of your web application, site collection and website is of utmost important to ensure you build your site in a professional and most recommended way. Go through this article from Technet that would help you plan your site in
    SharePoint 2013.
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263267.aspx
    2. Planning and choosing the right authentication type is also a very important decision. I recommend you to go through the below article if you have not already gone through.
Plan for user authentication methods in SharePoint 2013
    3. Plan for licensing for your SharePoint 2013 Internet Facing Website.
Licensing Internet Sites Built on SharePoint 2013
SharePoint 2013 licensing for Internet facing sites
    4. To grant access to registered users to Intranet site (as you mentioned in question), if you created both web applications in same farm (same domain) then that would be easy to grant access using Site Permission with Windows Authentication enabled for
both web application. If both web applications are created on different domains then If there is a two-way trust in place, and the SharePoint servers have the necessary port access to the remote domain's Domain Controller, then it is automatic. If it is a
one-way trust, then you need to follow these directions:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263460(v=office.12).aspx
If there is no domain trust in place, then you either need to create one, or look at alternative technologies,
    such as ADFS.

  • Best Practices: BIP Infrastructure and Multiple Installations/Environments

    Hi all,
We are in process of implementing BI Publisher as the main reporting tool to replace Oracle Reports for a number of Oracle Form Applications within our organization. Almost all of our Forms environments are (or will be) SSO enabled.
We have done a server install of BIP (AS 10gR3) and enabled BIP with SSO (test) and everything seems in order for this one dev/test environment. I was hoping to find out how others out there are dealing with some of the following issues regarding multiple environments/installs (and licensing):
Is it better to have one production BIP server or as many BIP severs as there are middle tier form servers? (Keeping in mind all these need to be SSO enabled). Multiple installs would mean higher maintenance/resource costs but is there any significant gain by having more autonomy where each application has its own BIP install?
Can we get away with stand alone installations for dev/test environments? If so, how do we implement/migrate reports to production if BIP server is only accessible to DBAs in production (and even real UAT environment where developer needs to script work for migration)? In general, what is the best way to handle security when it comes to administration/development?
I have looked at the Oracle iStore for some figures but this last question is perhaps one for Oracle Sales people but just in case anybody knows... How's licensing affected by multiple installations? Do we pay per installation or user? Do production and test/dev cost the same? Is the cost of stand alone environment different?
I would appreciate if you can share your thoughts/experiences in regards to any of the above topics. Thank you in advance for your time.
    Regards,
    Yahya

Your data is bigger than I run, but what I have done in the past is to restrict their accounts to a separate datafile and limit its size to the max that I want for them to use: create objects restricted to accommodate the location.

  • What is the best practice to move from Outlook 2010 to icloud. I want to sync primarily contacts and calendars.

I would like to move from Outlook 2010 (originally on Exchange) to icloud, however I read lots of bad experiences about this.  Has anyone developed a good practice procedure for this?  I primarily want to sync Outlook 2010 calendar and contacts with a cloud service and my iphone.  I currently use a Dell latitude PC, outlook 2010, have upgraded to iOS 5 on an iphone 3GS (soon to be an 4GS).

I was trying to find the answer to this myself.
    I found it.
Use iCloud Control Panel for Windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455
I found that you don't need to create separate iCloud contact and calendar folders before installing this, it does that for you (in fact, you can't choose what these new folders are called, or where they go, but I guess you're unlikely to have anything else in your Outlook named "iCloud" before you start.)

  • Best way to move files between FCPX and Motion?

What is the best protocol for bringing files back and forth between Motion and FCPX?
How do I save out from Motion for import to FCP? Is it with Templates?
    Whats the drill?
I have looked at both the helps and am coming up short.
    Thanks.

If you're simply working in generic Motion project, ProRes 422 Quicktime files are the best format for going back and forth.
If you want to save a Motion project to use as a template in FCP X, it has to be one of the template Motion project types.  Title, Generator, Effect, Transition.  You would select these from the Template Browser that opens first when Motion is initially launched.
If you want to start creating templates, I stronly recommend Ripple Training's "Rigging and Publising" video course for Motion 5.

  • Best way to move date between LabVIEW 7.1 and 2010

We have a large LabVIEW based control and data acquisition system that for reasons beyond the scope of this post is at and needs to stay at LabVIEW version 7.1 for the forseeable future...  We are soon to add a camera diagnostic to this system that, again for reasons beyond the scope of this post, needs to be written in LabVIEW 2010...  The 2010 piece of code will run and need to receive some information such as shot number, when to trigger, etc. from the 7.1 side of the system...  Then after a shot has occurred and a camera image has been acquired, the 2010 code will do some on the fly processing of this image and within a few seconds will need to send back some results data to the 7.1 side...
The 7.1 code uses a tag engine approach to sharing data among different codes running on different machines...  I think now that more modern versions of LabVIEW use a shared variable approach...  But I need to communicate as I've described above between the two versions, 7.1 and 2010 (or it could be 2011 if that would offer some advantage)...
I'm new at this moving of data between versions like this so if something could offer some advice, especially if there is some tutorial information on this topic, that would be much appreciated...  Thanks in advance for any help that you might be able to offer...  thanks...  bob...

It really depends if your tag engine like communication approach is a home brown solution or something like the LabVIEW DSC engine. If homebrown and well written you should be able to reuse the client library part of it in newer LabVIEW versions without to many hassles. If it is LabVIEW DSC it may be a bit more complicated since the only means to share DSC tags in version 7.1 was as far as I can remember their proprietary TCP/IP tag interface, which was replaced in newer versions with he shared variable engine.
