Best reference munual for FCE?

Hi all,
I've finally got around to making the transition from iMovie to FCE (one look at iMovie7 was the final straw!)
Can anyone please tell me what they reckon is the best book to buy on FCE?
One that covers all the "tricks" as well as the basics.
Thanks,
TonyT

If by "tricks" you mean Special Effects, I don't think there are any.
The main problem most people coming from iMove have is how to get started on the darn program !
Forget about doing tricks for a few weeks.
The best book for getting you started is probably one of Tom Wolsky's Final Cut Express Editing Essentials available from Amazon.
If you later want an encyclopaedic reference book, try Lisa Brennais' Final Cut Express HD, again available heavily discounted from Amazon.
But as for books on special effects, I think you will have a long search.
Ian.

  • Best HD Camera for FCE 4.0.1

I am looking at the Panasonic HDC TM700k vs Canon VIXIA HF S21.
I have read a lot of puzzling information about folks having trouble importing footage from some cameras into FCE, including problems with the 60p on the Panasonic.
Any truth to this? Will I have trouble in FCE with either camera?
    Message was edited by: BigOrange1

No experience with the Panasonic, but here's a recent thread of someone's problems with it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11457489#11457489
The Canon I can vouch for-- not that model in particular model, but Vixias in general all use an FCE-friendly form of AVCHD as far as I know.

  • Best export settings for FCE 4

How do I export from FCE 4 to iDVD so that the video quality is good? I've tried exporting in multiple formats and all of them are horribly pixelated.

Thanks for the details.  Now we can respond on what the problems are.
Basically, you have put incompatible media in a sequence not designed to handle even one of the media types you are using.
Your sequence is NTSC DV 720x480 4:3 aspect ratio.  That would be fine if you were using QuickTime NTSC DV clips.  But you aren't.  You are using a QuickTime .dv clip (sorry, but that really is a difference) plus two H.264 1920x1080 16:9 clips.
H.264 is an extremely compressed format, is not a format appropriate for editing, and FCE is not designed to edit H.264 material.   I 'get it' that you were able to import & manipulate the H.264 clips in FCE, but H.264 is not an editing format and FCE really can't work with it.  That is a big part of the reason you are getting undesirable results.
It is always a challenge to combine very different types of video in a single sequence.  You basically have two choices with FCE: all QuickTime/DV-NTSC (or QT/DV-PAL) ... or all QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.   The former gives you 4:3 standard def video; the latter gives you 16:9 highdef video.  Given that you are combining 4:3 material with 16:9 material you have to make a choice of which aspect ratio you are going to 'live with' in the final video and make decisions in advance about converting the source media to either all QT/DV-NTSC or all QT/AIC before you import the material into FCE.
You appear to have chosen 4:3 as your final aspect ratio (because your sequence setting is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC) and I assume you have cropped your 16:9 clips to fit.  If that is the case, then I'd suggest that all your source media clips should be converted to QuickTime/DV-NTSC (.mov files, not QuickTime .dv files) before importing them into FCE.  MPEG Streamclip is an excellent utility to do that conversion.
On the other hand, if you want a 16:9 final aspect ratio because 2 of your 3 clips are 1920x1080 then you should convert everything to QuickTime/AIC before importing into FCE;  but you will then have to live with one of your clips being 4:3 and therefore appearing windowboxed in the 16:9 video frame.  I would not suggest enlarging (scaling) 4:3 video to cover a 16:9 video frame because it will really soften and perhaps pixellate that portion of the video.
I appreciate this may not be the news you wanted to hear, but it is the way things are.

  • The best reference book for Dreamweaver CS6

    Hello all:
I'm teaching myself Dreamweaver CS6 through videos.  I haven't worked on Dreamweaver for many, many years.  The version I learned was Macramedia Dreamweaver 4 - so that tells you how long it's been!
Please, could any of you all recommend a good referance guide.  Not a tutorial book.  Just something I can refer to when I get stuck.
    Thanks if you can help!

Unfortunately, there's no simple answer to this. CS6 Perpetual License is different from CS6 Creative Cloud.   New feature enhancements are being added to the Cloud software on a regular basis.  Whereas Perpetual License users do not get these major upgrades until they actually upgrade to CS7.

  • What is the best way to for a plugin to wrap a video element in a parallel composition with a reference plugin that points to that Video Element?

I have a basic reference element loaded as a plugin, which is able to retrieve information about, pause and play video elements while displaying its own overlay content as well.  What it's not currently doing, is automatically positioning itself to the same location and dimensions of the video element that it references.  For some reason, when I try using the layout API to set position and size in the video element metadata, this is not retrieved by the reference element (it returns a null value for the target video element's metadata).
I wanted to try a different approach, specifically, creating a parallel composition that works as follows:
    1) When a video element is created in the factory, it is automatically wrapped in a parallel composition element along with a reference element, which is passed the video element as a target.
    2) The reference element sets its width and height with the width and height properties of the video element spatial trait and will listen for any changes to that width and height to adjust accordingly.
    3) Now that I think about it, the parallel composition should itself be a proxy for the video element, so other code in the player that moves, resizes, or otherwise alters the dispay of the video element, will if fact be adjusting the whole video element + reference element parallel composition.
In other words, I want the reference element to be an overlay that is "locked" to the surface of any video element and follows it in size, position, display and even audio traits.
Suggestions for the best way to approach this within the framework?

    Thanks Wei,
With some more tweaking, I am able to get and use the layout metadata as you said!  Here is where my issue stands now:
    * My IMediaReferrer element can now look at the layout metadata of the target media element and copy those values, so it has the same width, height, x, and y  properties.  This is great!
    * However, particularly for RelativeLayoutFacet metadata, this is only fully useful if both the target media element and my IMediaReferrer element are in the same composition.  If they are in different compositions which are themselves placed differently, then even identical x and y values don't add up to the same position on the screen.
So, my challenge is to figure out how to ensure that my IMediaReferrer element is placed in the same composition as the target media element.
Again, the goal is to write a plugin that will have a reference to an underlying video, and will always have the same width, height, x, and y of the video it is overlaying.  This plugin should not require any additional coding in the player, but should take care of setting itself up as above automatically when loaded.
There isn't any property on a media element which exposes the "parent" composition element that it is a part of, so I don't know how to get my IMediaReferrer to add itself to the same composition as the reference target automatically.  I'm not sure if it's possible to make my IMediaReferrer element extend ParallelElement and still load in a SWF Element as an overlay, and add that SWF Element and the target Media Element as children with identical layout metadata.
Do you have any suggestions on how I should proceed?
    Thanks again!

  • Best Camera for FCE under 3K?

I produce semi-professional videos for the corporate world. fifteen to twenty minute shorts designed to convey engineering details for commercial real estate. I'm going to use FCE as the NLE to put it all together. My question is, WHICH CAMERA IS BEST to use if FCE is going to be the editor. I'm not looking for a BestBuy camera, but I don't need a $10,000.00 Sony either. I want to get as many professional features as possible thought for around $2K to 3K. Furthermore, I've heard that many codex are not compatible with FCE.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Creating the Best Video Quality for YouTube Using FCE

Hey guys, have a quick question.  I'm making drum covers for YouTube, and I want the best possible quality for my viewers.  I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1 on my MacBook Pro, and Log and Transfer the video footage from a HDR-CX160 Sony AVCHD Handycam.   What are my best options?
    Thank you!
    Justin

In every aspect of life there is no such thing as one best option as it all depends on your particular circumstances.
Here is a good starting point for you to decide what suits you best.
When you have edited your project in FCE try these settings:-
    Select File>Export>Using QT Conversion.
Click the "Options"  button and when the the Options window opens you will see  "Size", "Settings" and "Sound" buttons.
Click the Size button and set 1920 x 1080
Click  the Settings button and  select:-
    Compression Type . . . . H.264
    Frame Rate . . . . . . . . . Current
    Key Frames . . . . . . . . . Automatic
    Compressor Quality . . . High
Encoding . . . . . . . . . . "Faster" encode will give almost the same quality as "Best" but is twice as fast - your decision!
    Data Rate . . . . . . . . . . Restrict to 10,000kbps  (Don't use a comma when you enter the number)
Then click the "Audio" button and make sure that AAC has been selected.
These settings should give very good quality results fairly quickly, which should play well. Your file size will be around 5GB per hour.
Some people prefer to use the smaller 1280 x 720, in which case the Data Rate should be 5,000kbps.
I suggest you do a quick test with a film under one minute long to see how it looks as there is nothing worse than spending hours encoding a long project only to find that the settings were unsuitable.

  • Best Training for FCE 4

Hi there everybody! I was wondering if there is any training for FCE 4 that everyone likes better than the others. I just finished FCE 4 Apple Pro Series by Diana Weynand, but that still left me with a lot of questions. I don't mind spending a little cash, but I don't want to waste it either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Big Kahuna

There's lots of training material out there. If you liked the Weynand book, you might also want to look at Tom Wolsky's Final Cut Express Editing Workshop. It takes a slightly different approach and there's much duplication, but those two are the ones I generally recommend to my students.
Mr. Wolsky (regular and prolific contributor to this forum) also has a "Class on Demand" DVD available on Amazon. It's more expensive than the book, but if you're looking for a different type of presentation, it might fill the bill.
Lots of folks swear by tutorials available on the web. Here are two sources:

  • Help - I need help to know what format is best for FCE

I have a lot a various videos to convert for FCE. I have generally just converted them to MOV h.264 (these are not HD) and use these in FCE.
The problem is the video and audio all has to be rendered. Also if I want to add an audio filter I can't listen to it in Real time as it has to be re-rendered.
I am growing tired of watching the progress bar creep along.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rich

Sorry I should have mentioned it.
All for NSTC and the original is a recording done by GoToMeeting. It is a Windows Video Media Standard 9.
Usually I have to then play it and capture it as we don't want the full screen. I capture it with Snap Pro X, The result of that is an Apple Animation Millions IMA 4:1. with FPS of 10.
I then bring that in to FCE and put in Sequence and Render it. Can't do anything with the audio as it has to re-render it before I can hear it. After Render is has light blue lines above. After editing, it's exported as Flash FLV for the web. THe end size must be 720 pixels wide,
I have MPEG Streamclip but it has so many options, not sure what to use.
I have looked all over for something that talks about formats to use and have found nothing as they all seem to think the original Video is being imported from a camera.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Need help setting up external hard drive for FCE project

    Hi folks,
Basically I am looking at making a 20-30 minute video this summer of my motocross adventures and what not and have equipped myself with an iMac (2.93 GHZ Core2Duo 640GB 4GB) and of course, FCE. I have tried smaller projects before (ranging in length between 20 seconds to upwards of a few minutes) but have noticed an overall decline in computer speed which I am under the impression is being caused by the 10s of GBs of video project files and what not that seem to be scrawled away within my computer. Before I made any videos, my computer was sitting around 560 GBs of free space. Since making maybe 3-4 videos (50/50 iMovie and FCE) its down below 400GBs. I'm not sure whether it's the raw video files or the projects themselves that are so large, but it's slightly frustrating. Is there any sort of software (either third party or apple) that can look at your hard drive and tell you exactly where all the biggest files are? I'll post this question in the iMac forum as I realize this is for FCE, but I thought if anyone knew of one it would be extremely helpful.
Anyways, I have a SimpleDrive 320GB external HD that I plan to use as my external for making this project within FCE and would like some help in terms of how to set it up with FCE, what are the best settings etc. It is currently formatted with Windows, so I will also need help in setting it up for a Mac. I do have about 120GBs used on it already and was also wondering if I could keep this when re-formatting, but I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to that.
Sorry for the long-winded post; any information on this or something related would be fantastic. Thanks.

Yes, you can use your external HD with FCE ... provided it is formatted as +Mac OS Extended+ and is connected via FireWire.
You will need to back up any data that is on the drive that you want to keep. Before reformatting it. Formatting erases everything that is on the drive.
Use Disk Utility (located in your +Applications > Utilities+ folder) to format the drive.
After formatting the drive, go into +FCE > System Settings+ and change your FCE scratch disk location to the external drive.

  • Ken Burns effect - sutible plugin for FCE

    Hello,
I have been looking though the forums and searching the net for a decent ken burns plug-in for FCE that allows an iMovie style action on a photo.
As I need to inlcude many photos I want something quicker then manipulating using keyframes, BUT I really would like something in FCE not just do it in iMovie and import it in.
Has anyone come accross a decent plugin for this? preferrably one which doesnt cost more the FCE itself!
    Many Thanks
    Andy.

    Ian,
That looks like a nice package. I remember looking at their offerings a while back, but found that my graphics card prevents their software from running on my computer. Here are the requirements taken from the Noise Industries site. These are the supported cards on both Intel and Power PC machines:
    • ATI Radeon 9550, 9650, 9600, 9600 XT, 9700, 9800, 9800 XT, X800, X850, X1600, X1900 XT, HD 2400 XT, HD 2600 PRO, HD 2600 XT, HD 3870
    • ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, 9700, 9800, X1600
    • NVIDIA GeForce 6600, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, 7300, 7600, 7800 GT, 7800 Ultra, 8600M GT, 8800 GT, 9400M, 9600M
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500, 5600
For best performance, a graphics card with a minimum of 256MB video memory is recommended.
The following graphics cards are not supported:
    • NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5200
    • NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
    • Intel GMA 950, X3100
    • ATI Radeon 8500, 9000, 9200
Then I looked at the GeeThree offerings and find that you need FCE 4. I have 3.5.1. So until a new Mac shows on my desk, I'll stick with using the motion tab to animate stills.

  • Using an external reference clock for counter measurements

    Hi all,
    I have several PXI chassis
configured for testing, each of which uses an NI-DAQ-6221 for
conducting period and frequency measurements among other things.
However each of my setups give me a slightly different reading when conducting identical measurements due to
the tolerance of the DAQ on board reference
    clocks.
The chassis' have a 10MHz GPS calibrated reference fed into them via the reference input and this is connected to the backplane. I have tried and failed to try to route and use this as my reference
base for my counter measurements so that each of my cards will give me
the same reading every time. I have tried the routing method using the
DAQ connect terminals vi but could not get this to work. I have looked through the labview examples and cant find anything thta shows me what i need to do to take frequency and period measurments using my external reference as my base clock. There are some examples showing the use of the DAQmx timing vi set to sample clock mode which allows a clock source to be selected. However these examples are only for counting digital events and when i apply the same vi to a frequency or period measurement an error is thrown saying 'invalid timing type for this channel', 'you can select: implicit, on demand'.
    I do not
understand the working of the DAQ hardware very well so was hoping
someone could help explain to me how to do this if it is even possible
or give me any guidance as to how else to overcome my problem. Any vis
showing how to use my external 10MHz reference
as the base clock for these kind of measurements would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
Thanks for the reply. When trying to use the connect terminals i just tried connecting the PXI10 to the onboard clock in the hope that this would configure it to use the PXI10 signal to synchronise the onboard clocks via the PLL. Doing this didn't throw any errors as i recall, it just gave me a reading of infinity as it couldn't measure the signal.
I have actually just managed to successfully do what i wanted thanks to help from Rob at NI tech support UK. There is a DAQmx timing property node which allows you to choose a reference clock source. By using the PXI_Clk10 signal this makes the DAQ synchronise its reference clocks to this signal. I have included an image of the code i used to achieve this to take period measurements.
Here is a very useful link which Rob sent me which may be of help to anyone else with similar problems

    Best regards,
    Dan.
