Best STP work flow to convert vinyl, tapes?

I'm trying to use Soundtrack Pro to record some LPs and tapes to add to my iTunes library. I've done this before in a number of different programs, but I haven't been able to get the procedure down for STP, and I'm hoping some one can help.
Here's my workflow:
1. Create a document for capture
2. Record audio side 1, then side 2 (88.2 KHz, 24 bit)
3. Break into tracks
4. Noise reduction
5. Normalization
6. Tweak EQ, dynamic range (expansion), stereo, etc.
7. Export each track, (44.1 KHz, 16bit, dither)
I'm having trouble with several of the steps:
1. Should I use multi-track or audio file projects? I've used multi-track so far with mixed success.
3. I used the split command in the project view, but it involves going to the waveform editor to delete the silence between tracks. After splitting, I moved each track into its own project track, but I'm not sure this was necessary or useful.
5. I wound up with each side of my tape in a separate audio file, and while I could normalize each side independently, I couldn't figure out how to normalize them together without manual trial and error.
7. Somewhere along the line I saw the dither checkbox on an export dialog, but when it came time to export my first track, I couldn't find it. Which export option should I use? I chose to select the track in the project view and export it. It seemed to work (I have more checkout to do), but I wanted to use dithering.
So I'm hoping someone with experience can either correct my procedure or offer a different one. Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Thank you mlehmann!
It seemed that audio projects would be the way to go, but multitrack seemed to offer a means of beating the track-breaking problem. It didn't, of course.
I use the higher res only because I don't lose so much fidelity during the other processes. For example, If I had a real low-level recording that needed a substantial volume boost, it could get pretty ugly. With higher-resolutions, this is much less of a problem. More room for forgiveness. I'd also be more likely to use 44.1/16 if my machine were more limited.
Select the audio making up a track and then New File? Amazing. Thank you!
You're absolutely right, normalizing should be the last step.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help! I'll give it a go and see how well I do at it.
Thanks,
Jeff

  • Convert Cassette Tapes to MP3's / CD's

I have about 200 tapes that I'm looking to convert into MP3's to ultimately burn to DVD's. I have an 2008 MP as well as a cassette player with an optical and analog line out. What's the best way to go about converting these tapes into a digital format? I would ultimately like to get each song on the cassette onto its own MP3 file, but I am fine with just having each tape as a single file. Any help is appreciated.

Well, as you can see by my equipment profile, I don't have a Mac Pro (yet), so unfortunately I can't speak to the quality level of the Mac Pro sound input. Either someone else will have to chime in or you could just give it a shot before buying the iMic. You may well get perfectly acceptable results just plugging straight into the MP's input.
The iMic is not a powered input; it's basically a conduit with, from what I understand, RIAA specs built into it which should offer better input than the Mac's input. AFAIK, most cassette decks require amplification for proper audio, so yours probably needs an amp inbetween the deck and the Mac/iMic in order to get the signal up to Line level.
Note that the iMic has a short cord, about 18 inches, and the cable feels a little more delicate than I'd like, so if you're going to use it, be sure it's in a place that's not going to be trafficked (sp?) at all. I don't use mine often, but I've never had a problem with it. (I bought mine because my headphone jack got damaged, and USB audio output from my mac was the only viable option. I've only recorded Vinyl LP using it, but testing mine through my G4's audio in vs. the iMic, the iMic gave me a significantly better recording.)
BTW, you should also check out other freeware/shareware apps for recording and editing. For example, some swear by Audacity and some simply use GarageBand if they already have iLife. I think the bottom line is that you should try your recordings in the cheapest possible fashion and see if the quality is ok with you, then buy iMic & software if you feel it's warranted.

  • HT1473 I have an EZ Vinyl/Tape Converter (MixMeister) to export vinyl records to iTunes. The computer downloads (records) the songs from the record, but when it is to be exported to iTunes, I get a window that says iTunes unable to export. (compatability?

I have an EZ Vinyl/Tape Converter (MixMeister) to record vinly records to my computer; which then is supposed to automatically download to my iTunes program. But it does not. It records and stores (somewhere) in the computer, but when it is supposed to be exported into iTones, I get a window that says something about incompatability and/or "close other windows in iTunes; but there are no open windows and iTunes is closed. I followed all instructions to EZ Vinyl to the T, but no export/import to iTunes. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do? THX!

Tony, thanks so much. The message reads: "Unable to export to iTunes. Please make sure you close any active windows in iTunes. Would you like to try exporting again? [Yes] [No]"
And of course I click on Yesl, but I keep getting the same window message. I read somewhere, that MixMeister is not compatible with Apple iTunes 10 series versions. The advice said to go to control panel; Programs; click on iTunes; click on Change; click on Repair. I tried that, but I still get the same window message. Then I read that I should contact the mixmeister support website, which will be my next step. But if you can provide any direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again!

  • Can anyone help with a compatibility issue with EZ vinyl/tape converter?

I have been using EZ Vinyl/Tape Converter in conjunction with an ION turntable to transfer all my old vinyl into iTunes.
I have had no problems until the latest version of iTunes was downloaded and installed.
Now, if I attempt to import a track using EZ, it tries to import into iTunes for a couple of minutes, before giving me an error message which says "Make sure all active windows in iTunes are closed".
I have no idea what this means, because I'm doing nothing any differently to what I've always done.
Can anyone suggest what might have changed?
    Thanks in advance.

What is best depends in part on your particular needs. Due to loss of significant features in recent versions of Pages and Numbers in iWork and for other reasons, I switched. The following is very capable and very compatible and free: http://www.libreoffice.org

I want to create a movie in iMovie 10 and watch in on Apple TV. What is the best work flow to save hard drive space?

    Jim,
Thanks for the advice. I have avoided iMovie Theater because that would soon use all of my free iCloud allowance (although that could be an option). I have been sharing to iTunes at 720p thinking that my picture using Apple TV would be better than Large. I see now that I could use about 30% less hard drive space by using Large instead. Do you think I will experience an annoying difference in picture quality?

  • CONVERTING VHS TAPES FOR PREMIER

    Hello,
I have many analog VHS tapes that I would like to import into Premier. Can this be done direct or is there an intermediate software that the tapes need to first be input to and then possibly converted to a Premier friendly digital file.  These are not commercial tapes or movies with copyright protection but rather family vacation and home movie material. I recentlly began using a product to convert vinyl to digital audio files and I am hoping that there is something similar for VHS material. I am currently running with PE 4.0..Thanks Tom T

I am using Acoustica's Spin It Again Ver.2.
    http://www.acoustica.com/spinitagain/index.htm
It has a very easy to use interface and has a host of cleanup combinations to minimize clicks and pops and tape hiss. Its only tricky quality is the feature that auto sets its recording level. In order for the auto feature to set itself properly you need to play the loudest passage of the record your transferring. That isn't always easy to either remember from having played it or finding it on the record without some sampling.
If you already have a stereo with a record output, turntable and a cassette tape deck its almost plug and play. You can begin transferring almost immediatly. The computer also needs to have an audio input as well. I've had two computers dating back to the late ninteys and both had them.
The only other feature that can be a little troublesome is the feature that breaks the recording into tracks. That requires a break in the audio. But all is fixable after the transfer. I like playing around so I don't mind going in and adjusting as necessary but for most albums it works just fine.
If your hooked up to the internet while your transferring it also has a nifty lookup feature that will automatically plug in all the track titles from what must be the largest database of recordings in the world. This is really neat and saves a lot of typing.
It has a voice prompt setup wizard, which you can turn off once you get the hang of everything and a fairly decent instuction book plus a users forum as well to help with any difficulties with setup and operation. There are other softwares on the market but this one gives the best performance for the non audio engineers among us, and for the cost.  Even they, who populate the forum like this product for its diversity, ease of use, and quality of transfers.
I hope that this helps. Hollar if you need more details.......Tom T

  • Optimizing work flow in FCP on new iMac? (dropped frames)

    Hello-
I've recently purchased a new iMac, first in about 6 years. I'm looking for some advice about optimizing my work flow in FCP. I am largely self-taught, using FCP for hobbyist/amateur video.
Until this new computer, I have been using FCP on other people's Macs (schools, arts institutions, etc), only resorting to my old Powerbook when absolutely necessary. So I have not had to worry about performance issues until now.
I am shooting on a Kodak Zi8 pocket cam in 1080p HD .MOV files, 1920x1080 H.264, AAC audio.
In my first attempts at editing the footage, I find that I am getting dropped frames on playback at every edit point - any time I cut between shots, add titles, etc.
(I also tried editing some much smaller, compressed files (QT 854x480, H.264, AAC audio) in the timeline and had the frame drop problem.)
Also, when I add titles, they do not preview render - I have to render them completely to be able to playback.
When I allow FCP to change the sequence settings to match the clip, I get the following:
    1920 x 1080
    Aspect: HDTV 1080i (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
In this instance I am editing footage that is stored on the local HD, but I have also tried editing footage from a USB 2.0 external drive, and got the same dropped frame problem.
...its a little frustrating to get these performance issues on this new computer, so I hope that someone here can help me resolve some of my problems. Hopefully this is a work flow issue, but if its a lack of hardware, well, shame on me for not looking into it enough.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi -
H.264 is a recording and delivery format, but as you have discovered, it is very difficult to edit. Its qualities of recording a high quality image in a small file size, which make it attractive for use in Flash based camcorders, makes it very difficult for FCP to work with. Attempting to work in H.264 makes FCP drop frames, require constant rendering, etc.
The best solution is to convert your footage to an edit friendly file format, such a ProRes LT or AIC. There will be minimal impact on the quality of the image. This conversion will result in files that are much larger than your original files, but will work easily in FCP.
You don't say if you have FCS or just FCP, but if you do have FCS then you can use Compressor to do the conversion.
    Hope this helps.

  • Work flow in iLife

    Hey kids,
I have A BUNCH of video that I need to boil down in to multiple DVDs with multiple chapters per DVD (about 8 hours). Is there a description of a good work flow from iMove to iDVD described anywhere,....Do i need to export each "chapter" as a movie and then import them into iDVD in order to maintain a chapter structure?. If so what is the best way to do this,...HELP , PLEASE!!

That's a lot of video! In general, the workflow I prefer is doing editing in iMovie, quitting, then open iDVD and import the video. iDVD has 3 options for converting video into the correct format for DVDs, and you set this in Preferences (up to 60 min=Best Performance; up to 120 min=Best Quality; the Pro setting takes longer, but does a better job with the more highly compressed 2hr video). With so much video, it might make sense to divide your footage by 110 minute blocks (there needs to be room for a few other files so you can't fit a full 120 minutes of video on a single layer DVD).
That's a high level overview; Klaus' links will give you more details; the "Missing Manual" and other books will provide lots more detail; and the forum here is good for questions.

  • P2 Work flow

I feel like I’m making so head way using HVX200 at my new job. I was able to download/convert./transfer media off the P2 card 2 different ways.
    1. HVX200 camera via firewire straight to external LaCie HD and then I transferred that to an internal HD so that I could clear off my external HD and use it again to get more media off P2 card for next project. (Small projects 5-10 minutes) But when I went to move the Contents and Lastclip files they were locked. I had to unlock all the files. Is there a way around this?
    2. HVX200 hooked directly to computer where I pushed the PC/Dub button for 2 or 3 seconds until an icon mounted on the desktop. Then I opened FCS 2 and went to Log and Transfer and tried to use this work flow, but not sure if was I just working from the files on the P2 card in the camera. That is, not exactly copying them to my computer or hard drive just editing from the card.
I watched Shane Ross' Tutorial on P2 Workflow w FCP 6 and saw the icons on his desktop:
    1).P2 Card
    2.) Shuttle1
    3.) Media Drive.
Can you briefly explain what all three Icons are?
How I would I get the P2 card to mount on the desktop? Is there an external device that I need to insert the P2 card directly into to and bypass using the camera?
I know these are basic questions to many of you but I like the way you guys answer questions with patience!!!
    Thanks,

    1).P2 Card
The P2 card that I took from the camera.
    2.) Shuttle1
The drive that I copy the CONTENTs and the LASTCLIP files to. Field offloading of footage. I make folders to contain these files. All laid out in the tutorial.
    3.) Media Drive.
When you use the LOG AND TRANSFER option in FCP, this is where you import the footage to. From the backup drive (Shuttle1) to the media drive...the drive you use to edit.
When I am done importing, I copy the footage off the SHUTTLE drive onto my Archive hard drives...or LTO tape drives...whatever you archive to.
How I would I get the P2 card to mount on the desktop?
Install the drivers for the card. They are on the Panasonic site, and should be on a CD that you got with the camera. If you have a Powerbook G4 like I have, then it will fit right into the computer. If you have a MacBook Pro, then you need the Duel Systems Adapter...or you need to use the camera itself.
Is there an external device that I need to insert the P2 card directly into to and bypass using the camera?

  • Canon 60D work flow

I have just purchased the Canon 60d and would like some advice on editing work flow. Right now I have not upgraded to fcp 7. Would this make a difference when using the tape-less workflow? How about a RAM recommendation for DSLR HD editing? Any other advice that might help me ease into editing footage from this camera.
    Thanks

FCP 7 will give you more options with ProRes. Proxy, LQ, 4444 in addition to SQ and HQ available in FCP 6.
Be sure to copy the entire card to your hard drive when transfering your content.
Don't edit the native H264 files, convert to ProRes LQ or SQ is good enough.
RAM isn't an issue so long as you have a minimum of 4Gb, (all that FCP can access) add more if you run a number apps at once.

  • Best video Hardware/software for converting VHS DVD and others on Mac?

    Hello,
I am having problems finding some much needed details on what the best software/hardware is for converting video formats on a Mac. I should note I am using a NEW iMac 4GB memory and Leopard OS so what I use needs to be compatible. Perhaps next year I will get a Mac Pro, but for now I'm using this setup. Here's is what I need to do:
    1. Transfer old VHS tapes (home movies and such) to DVD. I need to be able to use DL DVD discs for my recordings so I don't have to switch DVDs. In other words make them just like the DVDs you play that you buy. Therefore, they also must be able to playback in home theater DVD players, not just on the computer. I would assume the best way as for encoding is to get the VHS tape in digital format on the hard drive, then use the codecs to turn them into DVDs?
    2. Once on the hard drive I also need to convert them to a format neutral playback on both the Mac and PC. What is the best, MPEG 4?
    3. The ability to do some nice editing of making bookmarks, chapters and thumbnails for the DVD menu and divisions I wish to make. In other words, if I have a home movie containing my Summer and Winter vacation, I want to insert bookmarks at points to skip to like in a movie DVD and also have a thumbnail of it just like DVD movies does.
    4. A nice MAIN menu for the DVD that will let me hit the main categories, not just chapters for the TOP level DVD menu. Such as Summer Vacation, Winter vacation.
    5. The software should be easy to use so I don't have to take a HUGE crash course requiring lots of work making the project a chore. Also, I don't want or need a professional package, just something simple that is less than $200 per software program. Not the expensive $500+ software options for movie makers.
Thank you for any tips and advice on this matter.

"Best software/hardware" depends on your exact needs & wants.
One simple way to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD is with a *DVD Recorder*. Many of these come with VHS and DVD decks already built in. Insert your VHS tape, a blank DVD, hit record and off it goes. When finished, you have a playable DVD.
To transfer your VHS tapes to DV for editing you will need a converter. The *Canopus ADVC-110* is a very nice, relatively inexpensive device that will do that job for you. (It's also possible to use most modern DV camcorders as converters, too.) You would connect your VHS deck to the Canopus box via their analog video & audio connections, then connect the Canopus box via FW to your Mac, and then when you play the VHS tape you would capture the video in iMovie or FCE.
Once your videos are captured on your Mac, you could use iMovie or *Final Cut Express* to do whatever editing you might want to do. Regardless of which one you edit with, however, it's iDVD that you would use to create your DVD menus and burn your DVDs.
So, overall, the workflow would be like this: *VHS Deck > Converter (camcorder or converter box) > Capture on Mac (iMovie or FCE) > Editing application (iMovie or FCE) > iDVD > DVD*
For playback on computers MPEG4 would be an ok choice, H.264 is probably a better choice, and then there's the matter of whether or not you want to export as a QuickTime movie and/or AVI.
iLife came with your Mac, so you already have iMovie and iDVD. How about giving them a try before you consider investing in a significantly more sophisticated application like Final Cut Express. (just my opinion)
