Best way to animate a line with a dot leading along a path
I need to animate a line along a path with a circle in front of it. Basically an 'i' path with the tail extending. Similar to the shape in this image http://www.ravishankar.me/images/intro/skelta-connect2.png
Ive tried:
Using and animating a shape tween, its very time consuming and would only really work without the dot
Using a mask doesnt seem to work either as its not a basic line
And making it a symbol on a path in a motion tween also doesnt follow the line to how i need it
Any suggestions please!?
You could do a frame by frame animation. The easiest way to do it is to work the animation backwards along the timeline, removing a piece of the line (and moving the dot) in each frame and then reversing the frames when you are done.

According to my experiments, you have removed all line terminators from the file, and replaced those between lines with a space.
That is to say, you have turned a multi-line file into one long line with no line terminator.
If that is what you want, and your files are not very big, then your echo statement might be all you need.
If you need to deal with larger files, you could try using the 'tr' command, and something like
tr '
' ' ' <file.txt >newfile.txt
The only problem with this is, it will most likely give you a trailing space, as the last newline is going to be converted to a space. If that is not acceptable, then something else will have to be arranged.
However, if you really want to maintain a multi-line file, but remove just the very last line terminator, that gets a bit more complicated. This might work for you:
perl -ne '
chomp;
print "
" if $n++ != 0;
print;
' file.txt >newfile.txt
You can use cat -e to see which lines have newlines, and you should see that the last line does not have a newline, but all the others still do.
I guess if you really did mean to remove all newline characters and replace them with a space, except for the last line, then a modification of the above perl script would do that:

Best way to build a website with hundreds of pages
What is the best way to build a website with hundreds of pages that include businesses in every city of the U.S. I will be building it in Dreamweaver CS4 and pulling the data from an MS Excel spreadsheet.
I started building it by building the first page and then saving a new page with new data and so on.
There must be a way to pull from the Excel doc without copying and pasting each page of data, and there must be a way to build this site smaller and easier to make changes when needed.

What you want to do is take the first page, once you have your design done - and save it as a template (file - save as - Dreamweaver Template).
Then you want to select the areas (most likely the divs you have content in) that will have content changed, and select the div or p or whatever element... and go to Insert - Template Objects - Editible Region.
Make sure you don't made editable the areas that are the primary design - such as a logo element, a header image, the navigation etc. If you want to change those - you would do so by making the change on the template, and then it will automatically update all pages made based on that template.
Once you are done setting up the templates - go to your new page and choose Modify - Templates - Apply Template To Page
Select the template you just created (note it will be placed inside of a new folder titled "templates" automatically by Dreamweaver).
Now, any of the areas you selected to add different content into will be selectable, and you can copy/paste or however you are doing so.

What is the best way to share a video with someone in another city?
I know that FCPX contains all sorts of share options which create different resolutions and file sizes appropriate for different sites like YouTube, Facebook, and others. But how to create the videos really isn't the problem.
I want to know how to share them. I'm creating videos that are ultimately to be viewed on the internet. When I have a completed video, I want to show it to the person who it is for before I finalize it. I know that if it very small, I could email it. And if it's larger, I could use something like Dropbox. But I don't necessarily want them to have a copy of it (though I could do that and put a watermark on it).
I'd like to upload it to a site like YouTube or Vimeo, but those sites seem to be about sharing videos with a wide audience. I know you can make a video private on YouTube, but, from what I've read, they permanently have the right to use the content, which I definitely don't want.
So what's the best way to do this? I'm going to have to do it regularly, so I'm willing to pay for a service if it assures privacy and does not try to assert some right to my content.
I know there is an issue to be considered with people screen capturing content, but I'll use a watermark to lessen the chances of that.Hi Russ--

Best way to animate refresh arrows
Hi all, I am looking for a best practice for animating two arrows along the path of an O (font: Times new Roman)
See the picture below, it is not as simple of rotating the arrows, as the arrows have to move along a oval path and the paths stroke is not a consistent thickness.
I could animate frame by frame but I figured some guru on here might be able to suggest an expression or some other more optimized way. Thank you in advance for any tips. ChrisA few of the tricky steps I left out:
Change the anchor point of the triangle to be at the "base" with the pan-behind tool
1st arrow:
time-reverse the keyframes.
adjust the rotation and anchor point of the arrow to place it correctly.
set the arrow to "Auto-orient" "orient along path"
2nd arrow:
select mask path again and look at the "first vertex" which is the square vertex--not round.
go to the vertex that is 180 degrees and select it, right click and set first vertex
then repeat above -
What's the best way to animate handwritten script?
I am trying to animate the appearance of this logo being written. I have tried to approached this a couple of different ways but keep working myself into a dead end.
Mask paths become too complicated unless I'm doing it wrong. My next attempt will be to do it but with many smaller masks, revealing smaller sections at a time but with the appearance and flow of one motion.
Any suggestions? Is After Effects even the right program to be using?I use fountain pens. the typeface you have chosen requires a beveled nib, what we might call a stub or an oval italic. As the direction of the stroke changes, the amount of metal contacting the page changes and therefore the width of the line of ink being laid down.
As has been said, it's complicated to emulate handwriting if you want it to be realistic. The other thing to know about realism is that someone using a calligraphy pen or a fountain pen do not create glyphs at the same mechanical pace. The repositioning of the hand and fingers from ending a descender and back to the baseline to begin a new glyph requires time. The space between words requires a pause in the action. -

I have 7 sets of possible values for the column wctr_id that are groups of similar/same work centers, and should be treated as the same, assuming the ord_nbr, sub_ord_nbr, and major_seq_nbr are the same. In my example case statement above, anytime I find 'H211' or 'H212', I am replacing it with 'Z211', which is my new, unique identifier for any wctr in the group ('H211', 'H212'). I have 7 of these sorts of groups that need to be replaced by a new, unique identifier. Is my CASE statement (noted above) the best way to do this, or is there a better way? These groups of similar-to wctr_id's are not listed in a table anywhere.Hi,

Another thing that is helpful, and promotes faster, better solutions, is to simplify your problem.
For example, you have to compute a lot of aggregates, but it looks like you already know how to do that. This problem only involves the CASE expressions, and how they interact with the GROUP BY clause. So just cut out most of the aggregate functions.
Also, it looks like the intricacies of in-line view a have nothing to do with your current problem. For purposes of posting this problem, pretend that a is a regular view, so it doesn't clutter up the main query.

For starters, you can use column aliases in the ORDER BY clause. Unfortunately, that's the only place where you can use column aliases in the same query where they are defined . You can compute them in a sib-query, and then use them in super-queries.
In other words, wouldn't it be nice if we had a table just like op_detail, but with an additional column called wctr? Make a view: either a regular view (especially if wctr, computed the same way, will be used in several different queries) or an in-line view, as shown below.

If it was more complicated (e.g., if there were not just 2 values that need to be mapped to 'Z211', but also 3 values to were equivalent to 'Z987', and 1 that was to be treated like 'A012', and 5 that should appear as 'A666', and ...), then you could code all that in a humongeous CASE expression (a nested CASE expression, if it involves more that 128 branches), but it really belongs in a table, where you have the raw wctr_id (like 'H211') in one column, and its corresponding equivalent (such as 'Z211') in another. I know you said you can't create new tables; I'm just pointing this out so you can tell the people who won't let you create new tables that it's a bad idea, likely to cause errors and certain to waste time in the future. -
Best way to add delay line and arpeggiator to multi instrument?
I am using logic sequencer to drive external hardware, and have been making use of the arpeggiator and delay line objects in the environment.
Apparently they have to be set up in loop cabling? Where the delay line runs into the multi instrument, which then in turn runs back into the delay line?
If I set it up just like this, the delayed note is then fed back into the signal and feeds the delay line again so that an infinite delay is created, even if I have repeat only set to 1.
I put the transformer in and if the note is of the original velocity it is sent to the delay line, all other velocities are brought down by -1 and those notes are sent just to drive the external equipment, not back into the delay line itself.
My question is is this the simplest way for this configuration? Or is there a simpler way that I'm overlooking? If there is a simpler way my guess is it probably lies in the parameters of the transformer because I am somewhat unfamiliar with it.

Maybe I can try to explain a little bit more detail. I have an external sampler that can receive on 8 individual midi channels. Let's say I have a bass line sample on Midi Channel 1, and a Snare sample on Midi Channel 2, and I want to use the delay line to delay only the snare sample.
I run the delay line into Instrument Track 2 in the environment. At this point, there would be no delay. Not until I run the multi instrument back into the delay line. (I suppose this makes sense, because the multi instrument would need to be in the signal path). Then, however, the note that is delayed is fed back into the delay line as well (the delayed note of the snare), and it in turn feeds the delay line again, and an infinite loop is created.
If I put a transformer in there so that top condition is true the note at the original velocity is fed into the delay line (The original snare hit on beat 2 let's say). Then the delay line subtracts from the velocity by -1 or any number. (In reality this may or may not effect the sound, because the sound in the sampler may or may not respond to velocity. I can always have it play 'full on' whatever the velocity of the midi note.)
Then all notes with subtracted velocities bypass the delay line, which should be the case, because they are never meant to be fed back into the delay line.
That is a lot, I know, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. I mean, it actually works! I am kind of surprised about that. I don't know if there is an easier way to achieve the same results. I am working with limited hardware equipment, and that seems to be the best way for me to set things up as far as synchronization issues are concerned. Might be an unusual set up, but it seems to give me the best results right now.

Best way to share iTunes library with two user accounts?
I have a single iTunes library on my Macbook Pro. I would like to share between to user accounts, each with Apple ID's. What's the best way to do so? Right now, I've given the second user rights to read/write to the first users "Music" folder. But when one user adds song files, the other must "Add Folder" in order to see the new purchases. It's kind of putsy. Is there a better way? Thanks!

Have the iTunes Library located in the Shared Folder for instance and then launch iTunes in both users while holding option (or alt) on your keyboard. Choose the iTunes library file wherever it may be located. You can keep it in the same spot if you want (i.e. your Music folder). Many people have their's on a local network hard drive and do this.
The benefit is that when one user updates the iTunes library file, the next user will open an updated version that has all songs that the other user added.
Since you have one computer shared, this should be fine. I am unsure what happens when multiple computers/users access the library file at the same time. -

I have just purchased an imac which I am very happy with. In our household we also have two iphones (one mine and one husbands) and one ipod (my sons). We all have individual itunes accounts set up on our previous computer (not a mac). We have sepereate apps and music, although there may be the odd occasion where we would like to share a song (if this is possible) across devices.
I am just wondering the best way to manage these devices using the new imac. Should I create individual accounts to logon to the imac, then from within these launch our own itunes accounts and sync our devices with these. Or should I be using one version of itunes, logging on to this with our different itunes usernames and storing things in libraries.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....

Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor

In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.
