Best way to do document covers -- Illustrator or Indesign?

I work on an academic journal that's relatively simple -- no bleeds on the inside, mostly black and white text and illustrations, with a perfect-binding (paper-back-book style spine). I also now design the covers, which are identical for each issue except for the issue number and date on the front and the spine, and a picture in a box on the front cover. There's a background color over the entire cover that bleeds off all edges. I've been doing the cover layout in Illustrator, since I need to do the front, back, and spine in one piece, and since the width of the spine changes based on the page count, and I wouldn't know how to do this easily in Indesign. But I also need to produce single-page PDFs of the front and back covers without the spine, and making these in Illustrator is awkward -- I can do it using the Print Tiling Tool and printing PDFs, but the Print Tiling tool doesn't snap to the page borders, so it's not as accurate as I'd like. I'd also like to see if I can set up the issue number and date as cross references so they'll automatically update each month, which is something I'd have to do in Indesign.
What's the best way to design the front and back cover in Indesign and import to Illustrator to unite them and add the spine? I'm a little worried about seeing borders between the background color of the covers (made in Indesign) and the spine (made in Illustrator). Any advice appreciated...

I do the reverse: front and back covers + spine (with bleed) in 1 spread, and then place that document (cropped to trim) into my single-page layout when generating a low-res PDF of whole book: placed once on front cover, and once on back.

In that case I suppose you have a choice.
Crop out what you don't want in InDesign.
or
Copy from Illustrator and paste into InDesign, but then you have to open
all of the Illustrator files. And if you are going to open them anyway
why not at that time remove all the stuff you don't want and place them
as you would have.

Best way to store documents and images in a web application

All,
Which is the best way to store the documents, is it Oracle DB or file system or Virtual Directory Mapping in weblogic.
We are working on a Internet based application into CRM domain, there is a requirement where user can upload and download the documents (.pdf, .xls, .doc etc). Right now we are storing images in the DB. Is it advisable to store all the docs in database and will it scale up in future.
PS: There is no scope for using content server because of business constraints.

Best way to store depends entirely on requirements.
Why store it in the database when it for example is purely static images (e.g. used as part of the web GUI)? Instead that can be served up directly by a web server - which is specifically designed for this.
If it is more than just an image, but include tags (non spatial data attributes), requires transaction control (e.g. updating an old passport/id photo with a newer one), auditing, filtering/searching and ordering, requires backup, needs security and access controls, and so on - than that is most definitely a database function.
So the issue is not what the binary file is or contains - an image or pdf or something else. It depends entirely on how it is to be used and what the business requirements are in this respect.

2. Ungroup! Group or may not be released, so please ungroup twice.

Best way to display documents in forms!?

Hi! I have multiple view objects created in my app. And I have one VO that is created from documents table and represent documents. All VO are assignet to this documents VO with relationship 1:many.
I want to know, what is the best way to represent my documents VO in forms, so I can navigate to correct document/documents from my other VO forms? Of course I can create one document form for each other VO form using view links. But it is a lot of work. Maybe there is easiest way to create only one document form and I can navigate to it from my all other VO?

I have seen video and have some questions! For example, if I will try to use dynamic form, how can I assign Methods parameter with table row value in my form (method param = #{row.SaimniecibasKods})? And my second question is, what happens when I try to Create/Insert action, all will work?
Is this dynamic form approach the best way in my situation when I have Master forms and for all these Master forms I use one dynamic form as Detail form?

Best way to share documents over a same network

How best to share a document on a LAN ?
Thought I'd ask the experts who do this all the time...
We never share docs but need to over our LAN so we can both edit same docs.
What is the easiest, most efficient way to do so? Public folder, iDisk, or ?

It becomes confusing if more than one person is editing the same document at the same time. You could use a public folder then turn on "track changes" in your word processing program. The issue of course is if you are both editing then one or more of you will lose your edits when you save the document unless you are very careful on save.
The best solution is to use a document management system that does version control. merges changes, etc.
If there are only two of you each of you will need to coordinate document saves to ensure changes are merged. If one of you has the document open the other will have trouble saving changes as the document will be locked. Not to mention the need to review every word in the document to ensure the other's changes are not overwritten.
If there are more than two of you editing the same document at the same time you need a document magement system. You can't rely on a manual process, especially if it is a large document you are all editing.
If there are just two of you you could make one of you responsible for the document then use email to send this responsible person the document for merging and saving the changes to the document.
The big issue IMO is not how to share the documents over the LAN but how to maintain version control. Sharing documents on the LAN is a trivial task.

Best Way to Setup Document for Colored Paper Job

Hi, we're running a business card job that will print on a red-colored paper (well, white & red duplexed for a white front & red back).
Curious to know the best way to set this up for both soft-proofing here, and to send the most appropriate files to the printer. We'll separate out the backs of the cards that print on red into their own document (since the fronts will run on white).
On these backs, there will be a background image that is a colored grayscale image with the foreground being a darker PMS red than the paper color (for a bit of a tone-on-tone effect). And the type will be engraved with opaque white.
- Should I change the 'Paper' color to a CMYK simulation of the paper color?
- Or is it better to setup a 'background layer' set to not print and filled with the red paper color?
- How exactly should I setup the opaque white for the type? I think if I left Paper as white, applying the Paper or default white swatch would not set the type to print using a spot color, it would just knock it out, correct?

Ultimately for print production you will need the opaque white as a spot color, so create a spot swatch 0C, 0M, 0Y, 0K. As for the background image that you are printing on red stock, I would create a layer for the red stock, set the image on another layer that has a multiply effect, and this could be used for the proof. The print file, you would not need the layer for the red stock, and you wouldn't need the image to multiply either.
Why not just print a solid red with reverse type, instead of an opaque white on colored stock?

Best way to sync documents between 2 computer

I've both a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro and I also have a mobile me account. What is the best and easy way to sync documents on both computers? I don't want to sync everything just couples folders.

What is the best way to get a SharePoint workflow to trigger the refresh of an XML datasource within an InDesign document, and generate a PDF export? The datasource would be hosted by SharePoint.
Would InDesign Server be required?

My understanding of the license is that Adobe requires you to use InDesign Server for this sort of thing.
But the implementation is probably the same either way. Periodically poll, or find some way to trigger it.

Best way to make a clipping mask with indesign drawn vector shapes?

What is the best way to create a clipping mask with vector art that is drawn inside of indesign?
I have a group of vector shapes to paste into a rounded corner box. This art is grouped.
What i tried:
-create the rounded corner box i want the art inside
-cut art
-edit > paste-into
This worked, but i could not figure out how to move the artwork once it was pasted into the shape. With the direct select tool i could move the individual objects, but not the group of objects. Any ideas?
Is this the best way to acomplish what i'm trying to do?

Yopu don't mention the version of ID, which makes a difference here.
Paste Into is correct. In CS5 you can then use the content grabber donut to move the group inside the frame. In all versions you should be able to select the frame, tehn use Object > Select > Content to get the group, or use the button for that onthe Control Panel. Before CS5 you'll need to use the arrow keys or grab the center spot withthe mouse to move the group.

What is the best way to secure documents by division?

I'm sure this type of question has been asked and my needs aren't unique, but I didn't see exactly what I need. I'm fairly new to Sharepoint and could use some help, please.
I have a document library and one of the metadata fields is Division. We set up a Coordinator group for each division and would like the users in the group to only be able to view and manage their division's documents. I set up a view for each
division, and we are setting up a web part for each view, and using the Target Audience to control which view people see. I think this is clumsy and there are better ways to do this (probably). Contributors are all in one common group, and I think
we're OK with that because each conributor can only view and manage his own documents. It's the coordinators who currently have access to ALL of the documents in the library that I want to change so they can only access their own division's documents.
I am considering setting up a folder for each division, and when someone deposits a document in the library, I would use an SP Designer workflow to move the document to the approriate folder based on the division. I think I can then secure each folder
to a particular coordinator group. That sounds easy enough and may be the best approach.
I think, but am not sure, if I can assign security directly based on the Division column and not have to use the folders. I'm not sure if I can do this, and, if I can, I'm not sure it is the best approach. I'm worried I might get too many security
scopes if it looks at each item separately. Or can I set up differnet content type for each division and control access based on content type?
Anyway, I'm looking for the best approach and I'm not knowledgeable enough about SharePoint to know this on my own. Obviously I want something that's easy to set up and manage, doesn't create too many scopes, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Out of the box you can assign permission to an item based on thier cloumn value.You can write an event receiver for that.
I would suggst you to create a content type and use different document library for different divison.Use this common content type with all the document libraries.Permission segregation based on different doc library would be much easier to maintain and
performance would increase.Using a single document library with lots of stop ineherit item level permission degarde the performance.

Best way to clone document setup, baseline grid, to new document?

Indesign CS 5.5 I want to clone the exact settings from an existing document to a new document. I know I could save the existing document as a template, but it is a full sized book and none of the text is relevant. Is there an easy way to delete all the text, headers and footers included?
Or alternatively,
I can import all the styles, but I don't see any way to import or save and name the document setup, other than doing it manually.

Best way to Drape patterns in Illustrator

Hello,
I am working with some patterns, and I am trying to get them to follow the contour of my objects. For example, if I had a sock and I want my stitch pattern to follow the sock where it curves around a bend, and have the strokes stretch, when the sock get wider. I have tried playing with envelope options and I have had some success by making a large square with my pattern in it, rasterizing the pattern filled square and placing my sock on top and doing-make with top obkect from the envelope options, but that didn't really change the direction for the stitches as much as I would have liked. It did scale them based on the width of the area, so that's something, but I feel there is a better way to do this...where I would have more control.
Does anyone else out there do this kind of work and have any suggestions or tutorials I could follow?
