Best Way to Enumerate a non-unique Array of String to Integers

Hello,
I am trying to find the best way to enumerate an array of strings to integers. This string array is thousands in number and contains non-unique values.
I also don't know before run-time what those values are, so I have to dynamically determine the enumeration.
For example a user reads in an array of colors (but we didnt know this before runtime) of "red", "green", "red", "blue", "white", "green", "black", "blue"
I would like this to enumerate to 0, 1, 0, 2, 3, 1, 4, 2
as zero based enumeration.
Is there any suggested methods of doing this as efficiently on SPEED over MEMORY as possible?
Thanks!
Glenn

I also don't know before run-time what those values are, so I have to dynamically determine the enumeration.Are you saying that you can't pre-define the universe of colors that a user could potentially enter? If so, how will you determine the equivalence of RED to 0, etc? That sounds suspicious, there is a finite number of colors!
Anyway, for what it's worth, here's some code (that requires you know the color labels that could be entered.)
enum Color
    RED(0), GREEN(1), BLUE(2), BLACK(3), WHITE(4);
    private final int colorValue;
    private Color(int colorValue)
        this.colorValue = colorValue;
    public int getColorValue()
        return colorValue;
public class EnumTest
    public static void main(String[] args)
        System.out.println(Color.RED + " = " + Color.RED.getColorValue());
        System.out.println(Color.GREEN + " = " + Color.GREEN.getColorValue());
        System.out.println(Color.BLUE + " = " + Color.BLUE.getColorValue());
        System.out.println(Color.BLACK + " = " + Color.BLACK.getColorValue());
        System.out.println(Color.WHITE + " = " + Color.WHITE.getColorValue());
}

  • What is best way to connect a non-sap sys sending  xml idocs to SAP system

    Hi Can some one please guide as to what will be the best approach in connecting a NON SAP system to a SAP system.
    The non sap system should not be connected to access real time data,it does not support RFC,it can send data in IDOC xml format and i think in teaxt files also.Also I dont think there is any EDI subsystem in place.
    There has to be a periodic upload of material data from SAP /stock status/
    then there will be incoming data into SAP for sales order/purchase order etc
    What would be the best way to connect the two systems,IDOCs with partial EDI looks the best way ,but I am confused as to how will the XML IDOC be converted to normal IDOC and viceversa,how to handle the event triggering mechanism.
    If someone has experience in such a scenario ,please help.

  • What is the best way to move data from one array to another

    I'm going to be moving data from one array to a larger array on the same RAID but different controller. (I have some extra extra drives I'm also going to be installing Retrospect so I can't just restore from a backup.)
    The RAID has 450GB of production files, fonts etc.
    What is the best way to move the data over?
    I saw that someone had suggested using ditto. Would that be better than MacMV?
    I also own Bru LE so I could use that.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Best way to iniitialize a queue with array elements

    Hi Guys
    I'm looking for a bit of performance optimization..
    I'm developing a noise measurement application using LV8.6 and Win Xp /Win 7.
    To put it very simple I have a loop that samples, and a loop that does the math. data is shipped in a queue, producer / consumer style.
    So far so good.. Question is - is there a specific and more optimized way to declare this queue?
    I was wondering if declaring the queue with an initialized array element of a fixed size (the number of samples pr. read from the sound card will be known at runtime) would produce a queue that would be less heavy on dynamic allocation of memory compared to a queue obtained using a simple control no values.
    I've attached a screen dump to maybe make the question more obvious..
    I've been thru the "clear as mud" thread, as recommended in other threads that covers this topic - but i gets very high tech, and I kind of lost my way in it.. So looking for a more simple "you should use solution #x, because..."
    Thank you in advance.

    I believe (but am not sure) RT FIFOs will allocate this memory for you ahead of time. But, remember they are not deterministic on windows. You need to wire an array constant of the correct size into the FIFO read function also to avoid memory allocation, which is easy to overlook. It's worth looking into, if nothing else, assuming you have RT functions available. WIth this method, the queue size needs to be set, and you run the risk of overflowing and losing elements if not handled correctly.
    Just throwing other options out there.

  • What's the best way to extract data (a substring) from a string?

    Hi,
    I have a field being returned from a function call and the data looks like this:
    sfaqwe4|89uuuroeoi0|kjg3j90493  (It's data...pipe...data...pipe...data)
    What is the best technique to use to extract the middle set of data between the two pipes?
    Is the any prewritten method to separate the data, or do I have to loop thru the field looking for the pipes, etc.?
    Thanks for your help,
    Andy

    Hi,
    The WRITE statement is what we use to substring a field. The syntax is as follows:
    WRITE fieldname+starting_position(field_length) to variable
    The fieldname is the source (or input). The plus sign precedes the starting position of the substring.  The first position in the string is 0. Immediately after (no space) comes the length of the substring you are going to use. You can also substring the variable that you are writing the string to (the target).
    You can also use function module 'STRING_SPLIT_AT_POSITION'.

  • The best way to check the differences between two lists? Or substracting

    Hi,
    I am Googling on this and find many different answers and I am not sure what the best approach is. I have two lists:
    List A: with 10000 entries (String with length 6 all of them)
    List B: with 10002 entries (String with length 6 all of them)
    List A and B are almost identical but with 2 differences. I want to find these two differences or in other words generating a third list, List C with these 2 differences.
    What is the best way to approach? To us Array, ArrayList, Vectors, Hashmap, Hashtable...
    Thank you for any hunches

    Maria1990 wrote:
    I think I found the easiest approach...
    listA = [a, b, c];
    listB = [a, b];
    listC = listA.removeAll(listB);
    ...but if it is the best approach with performance in mind.. I have no idea...It really depends on what sort of comparison you want. Lists allow duplicate elements, Sets do not; so a comparison of Sets based on the contents of your Lists would only return distinct element differences.
    My suggestion: sort both lists and do a "staircase" comparison. That is (assuming they're both in ascending order):
    1. Read through both until you find a mismatch.
    2. Read through the one containing the "lesser" element, until you find a match, or until it's exhausted.
    3. If you find a match, go back to 1.
    4. If you exhaust one list, then any remaining elements in the other are also "mismatches".
    HIH
    Winston
    PS: With this approach, you can also flag your mismatches as "A not in B" or "B not in A".

  • WHat is the best index type for non uniqueness / Varchar columns in SQL 2008 R2

    Hello All Greetings,
    Please help me here with my doubt,
    in my table i have two columns about a million rows, it has about 20 columns in it, three columns with name as Period, Gender so most of the time these two columns use in where clause,
    Gender  will contain Either M or F , Period contains YYYY-Month (2013-December, 2013-August) etc so i would like to add a Index to these two columns so that in will increase the performance, so please let me know what type of indexes i need to add to
    these columns in the table,
    please note that only one time we will add data to the table which will take only 2 minutes but we query the table every day
    so my question what is the best index type that i need to create on columns with non uniqueness values in the column.,
    Thank you In Advance,
    Milan

    There is nothing whatever wrong with creating an index on a VARCHAR column, or set of columns.
    Regarding the performance of VARCHAR/INT, as with everything in a RDBMS, it depends on what you are doing. What you may be thinking of is the fact that clustering a table on a VARCHAR key is (in SQL Server) marginally less efficient than clustering on a monotonically
    increasing numerical key, and can introduce fragmentation.
    Or you may be thinking of what you have heard about writing JOINs on VARCHAR columns - it is true, it is a little less efficient than a JOIN on numeric type, but it is only a little less efficient, nothing that would lead you to never join on varchar cols.
    None of this does not mean that you should not create indexes on VARCHAR columns. A needed index on a VARCHAR column will boost query performance, often by orders of magnitude. If you need an index on a VARCHAR, create it. It makes no sense to try to find an
    integer column to create the index on - the engine will never use it.

  • What is the best way of dealing with an "implicit coercion" of an array to a sprite?

    Hello everyone!
         With continued help from this forum I am getting closer to having a working program. I look forward to being able to help others like myself once I finish learning the AS3 ropes.
         I will briefly explain what I am trying to achieve and then follow it up with my question.
    Background
         I have created a 12 x 9 random number grid that populates each cell with a corresponding image based on each cell's numeric value. I have also created a shuffle button that randomizes the numbers in the grid. The problem I am running into is getting my button-click event to clear the current images off the grid in order to assign new ones (i.e. deleting the display stack objects in order to place news ones in the same locations).
    Question
         My question is this: what is the best way to handle an implicit coercion from an array to a sprite? I have pasted my entire code below so that you can see how the functions are supposed to work together. My trouble apparently lies with not being able to use an array value with a sprite (the sprite represents the actual arrangement of the grid on the display stack while the array starts out as a number than gets assigned an image which should be passed to the sprite).

         Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Rothrock,
         Thank you for the reply. Let me address a few things here in the hopes of allowing you (and others) to better understand my reasoning for doing things in this manner (admittedly, there is probably a much better/easier approach to what I am trying to accomplish which is one of the things I hope to learn/discover from these posts).
         The elements inside my "imageArray" are all individual graphics that I had imported, changed their type to movie clips using .Sprite as their base class (instead of .MovieClip) and then saved as classes. The reason I did this was because the classes could then be referenced via "getDefinitionByName" by each cell value that was being passed to it. In this grid every number from 1 to 9 appears randomly 12 times each (making the 108 cells which populate the grid). I did not, at the time (nor do I now), know of a better method to implement for making sure that each image appears in the cell that has the corresponding value (i.e. every time a cell has the value of 8 then the custom graphic/class "skin8" will be assigned to it so that the viewer will be able to see a more aesthetically pleasing numerical representation, that is to say a slightly more fancy looking number with a picture behind it). I was advised to store these images in an array so that I could destroy them when I reshuffle the grid in order to make room for the new images (but I probably messed up the instructions).
         If the "drawCell" function only returns a sprite rather than the image array itself, doesn't that mean that my "eraseCells" function won't be able to delete the array's children as their values weren't first returned to the global variable which my erasing function is accessing?
         As for the function name "drawCells," you have to keep in mind that a) my program has been redesigned in stages as I add new functionality/remove old functionality (such as removing text labels and formatting which were originally in this function) and b) that my program is called "Blanko."
         I will try and attach an Illustrator exported JPG file that contains the image I am using as the class "skin7" just to give you an example of what I'm trying to use as labels (although it won't let me insert it here in this post, so I will try it in the next post).
    Thank you for your help!

  • Best way to pass an array of waveforms inbetween VIs

    In my VI I am developing I have multiple data sources that output a single waveform. I group these waveforms togeather to make a wave form array. The user selects which waveform they would like to display and they are displayed on a graph on a different form. Right now I have each different graph VI generating the whole array and displaying the selected element.
    My question is, this seems to be not efficent because I am generating data in 3 spots. I would think it would be better to generate it in one spot and then pass only the need data to the three graph VIs. What is the best way todo this? A global variable? Queue? Any suggestions?

    You're probably tired of hearing me say this, but the global function idea is the best.
    A global variable makes a COPY of the data each time you read it. That takes time, and memory. If each of 3 window reads the global, and picks out a channel, then you've made 3 copies of the original data. Depending on your data size, that may or may not be a problem.
    A queue means that once you read the data, it's lost from the queue. If window A reads from the queue, that data chunk is not in the queue any longer, so Window B can't read that same data.
    If the main window generates the data and deposits it in a global function, then each window can ask the global function for a specific channel to display.
    DATA STORAGE.vi:
    Inputs:
    WRITE/read (bool
    ean)
    DATA IN (2-D array of DBL, for example)
    Channel Index (I32)
    Outputs:
    DATA OUT: 1-D array of DBL (or waveform, maybe).
    Code:
    WHILE
    If WRITE/read
    Store DATA IN in a shift reg.
    else
    Pass Shift reg IN to Shift reg Out.
    Pick out channel via CHANNEL INDEX
    Pass selected data to DATA OUT.
    Loop NEVER.
    The purpose of the loop is just to have a shift reg. It doesn't really loop - it executes once per call.

  • Best way to return an array of values from c++?

    I have a a group of structs made of a mix of primitive types in c++. I need to return these to Java but Im not sure the best way to return them quickly.
    Should I create a class corresponding to the structure in Java then create the class in C++ and set its fields and return that? Or should I create arrays of different primitive types and return those? Can I even do that? Say, store a group of arrays of different types in a jobjectArray and return that? If I can, what would be the return type? Object[][]?

    If I have a java.util.List of objects lets say:
    List<File> files = new ArrayList();The List contains 1000 file objects. When my class finishes, is it enough to do
    files = null;to make GC able to release it from memory?
    Cause it seems like I can't do the following:
    for(int i = 0; i < extracted_files.size(); i++){
                extracted_files.get(i) = null;
    }Or should I use this one:
    files.clear()What is the proper and best way to do this in order to avoid memory leaks? How about normal Arrays like File[]?

    But what if the List is a class variable running in a Web Service for like months without terminating?You mean if the List variable is a member variable of a long-lived object? Then presumably the list needs to live as long as the object does. In the unlikely scenario that the object needs to live on but its list member variable does not, then yes, setting the member to null will be needed to make the list eligible for GC. But I highly doubt this is your situation, and if it is, you probably have a design flaw.
    And if the list is referenced only by a local variable, then, as I already said, when the method ends, the variable goes out of scope, and the List is eligible for GC.
    Now, a slightly different situation is when the List needs to live a long time, and at some point during its life, you're done using some object that it refers to. In that situation, simply remove the element from the list (or set the element to null if it's an array rather than a list), and then if it's not referenced anywhere else, it can be GCed.
    How about Arrays like File[]? Do I need to iterate through the array and null all the objects or is it enough to just null the Array?YOU. DON'T. NEED. TO. HELP. GC. You don't need to set the elements to null, and you most likely don't even need to set the array variable to null.
    Also note that only references can be null, not objects.
