Best way to output 140 minutes of video to DSP?

i have a video project that is 145 minutes long. My desire is to make it into one DVD...not two. Can compressor squeeze this so that it can fit onto a 2 hour DVD?

Sure, Compressor can squeeze it down to fit - there is even a preset for 150 minutes of material in Compressor 2 & 3 - but the question is whether or not the quality will be acceptable. Also, you've got to make sure your audio is Dolby Digital (not an issue for Compressor 3.0.x - as it has no AIFF preset - but definitely something to look out for if you're using Compressor 2.x)
At those bit rates (I believe about 3.5 average, 5 max) anything with reasonable motion can fall apart - pixelation, etc - very quickly. Taking heads stuff should be fine though.
Or are you asking this question because you've tried the Compressor preset already?

  • Best way to set up 3-hour videos in DVDSP

I have a series of 10 video lectures, each about 60 minutes long, that I've edited in FCP7. Standard definition (talking heads and slides).
The client wants 3 lectures per finished DVD master.
What's the best way to output these from FCP7, into DVDSP? Can I just create QuickTime files (bypassing Compressor), and pull those QT files into DVDSP? Do I have to use dual-layer discs to fit 3 hours on each?

Your best bet is encoding outside of DVD SP. Talking heads and slide may be able to fit on a DVD-5 since it is low motion/complexity it sounds like.
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
3 hours with 160 AAC audio should fit with an encode rate of 3.2, worthwile to run a test on a short section or two to see how it holds up. I have done some of those and it is fine. There are some other options also.
I would export each lecture as a self contained movie and encode in Compressor in case you need to re-encode and tweak things it is often easier (plus dropping a movie in DVD SP will not compress the audio, you could always do that seperately though.)
Also if the graphics (slides) are coming on and off screen you could also put Compression markers in those transition areas to focus on the encodes in that area (effectively). If the background is static and just a talking head there is not much movement in the background so definately worth a try.

  • What is the best way to back up photos and videos to a dvd from iPhoto, not in iPhoto format but just in jpeg format to access on either windows or mac

what is the best way to back up photos and videos to a dvd from iPhoto, not in iPhoto format but just in jpeg format to access on either windows or mac

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

  • What's the best way to output a high quality ready to send to the printer PDF?

I'm designing a photo book for a friend and we're having output issues. We're working with a professional printer but for some reason our prints keep coming out soft or pixelated. The images are 300 dpi and formatted correctly for an InDesign document so the issue is likely output.
What's the best way to output the HIGHEST quality PDF you can out of InDesign? Everyone seems to have different answers.
    Thanks in advance!

    Check a couple things.
One would be for broken links. If there are broken links then ID will use the preview image instead of the linked image.
Another would be to select an image that prints poorly in the Links Panel and check the effective resolution. If it is below your stated 300 dpi then the image has been enlarged greater than 100%.
Then just use the PDF/X-4 profile for your PDF.

  • What is the best way to make and organize home videos? Macbook Pro? iPad?

I have a Sony Handycam HD camcorder and a macbook pro.  Right now, I'm creating home videos by dumping all raw video into iMovie, adding a date/time stamp and saving the video to an external hard drive.  Is this the best way for me to create and store these home videos with my current setup?  I also take some video with my iPhone and include them in the iMovie projects as well.  I want these videos to be around for a long time and I'm afraid I'm going to lose them since I've graduated from DVDs to actual .mov files.
With that said, I would like to find a more streamlined approach.  Idealy, I would love to replace my macbook pro with an iPad and use the iMovie app to process all of my home videos and then save to iCloud or an external hard drive.  Is this possible?

Deleting the application from your /Applications folder is sufficient. There are sample projects in /Library/Application/Aperture you may want to get rid of as well, as they take up a fair bit of space.

  • Best way to organize photos and home video

Looking for the optimum way to organize photos and home videos. Goal is to have all devices have equal access to all the media. Just as important is for this to be as easy as possible to maintain and use.
Have an iMac with iTunes and iPhoto
Have multiple iOS devices with different family members each of whom take photos and videos with their devices
    Have multiple Apple TVs
iMac will be the hub with wifi synching
Right now about 30,000 files probably 1000 are videos (and growing)
I don't do any editing of photos or videos
Current set up is through iPhoto. I am importing all images not using the reference option. This worked fine until we started taking more videos which made for a large 200gb iPhoto library which barely loads even with 16gb ram.
I want to use iPhoto not iTunes because I keep everything organized by event, that includes photos and videos. And I don't want 2 separate organizing options to keep track of.
Most of my library is also available outside of iPhoto, I have a back up so I could use the reference feature of iPhoto which would mean a smaller library. However we use photostream on all iOS devices which has the feature that automatically imports into iPhoto. So I don't have to worry about those photos - it's easy. But then i would have some media copied into the library and some referenced. This doesn't work for videos so I will need to copy them.
I have a copy of iPhoto library manager software which could solve the excessive library size. That's cumbersome because I have to sync the correct library with the iOS devices and also make sure photostream is In the right library. I have only used this software a little so I could be wrong about this solution.
I appreciate any ideas that might work. Of course let me know if I am missing something, I am sure I am.
Would Aperture be a better solution? Some other software?

1 - do not change to a referenced library with iPhoto - it has many problems and should not be done - if you switch to Aperture it is ok - Aperture handles referenced libraries fine
2 - iPhoto does not load your entire library and while 200 GB is large it is not giant and is not causing you an problems - if you ave problems please describe them and  will try to help with thme -it is not libary size - My library is 263 GB and I have 8GB of RAM and there are no issues
3 - not sure what your constraints are but for me having all IOS devices logged into iCoud using the same Apple ID work best - the downside is that we all see the same things - which is our desire and I think yours

  • Best way to manage media (photos/music/videos) across user accounts in Lion?

Yesterday I clean installed Lion. I copied only that what I need from my TimeMachine backup. The apps were reinstalled as well. Now, I've set up iPhoto to link to my library in the Users>shared folder so that its available across all user accounts shared with my family members. Same is the case with iTunes library. But with integration with iCloud and @me.com or @mac.com accounts, I'm not sure how each one of us can have out own accounts configured in these libraries while they are shared. Keeping this in mind, what is the best way to share music, videos and photos across user accounts and yet have the apps... iTunes, iPhoto, etc, know our individual settings in out respective user accounts?
For iTunes should I just create a referenced library? Will that let me sync my photos and videos to my iPhone 4? If so, how?
For iPhoto I guess i''ll have to create separate libraries for each user account and then have one common for our shared photos. But thats just plain complicated for users who aren't tech savvy in my family.
Please advice before I create a mess with my media again!

Thanks for the idea, but that strategy introduces problems of its own. Now I have two iPods (a 5G and a touch) that sync with one library and an iPhone that syncs with another. This makes my life workable on the road, but at home, it means I have to change iTunes libraries when I sync different devices. It also means that, when I download new content, if I want to take it with me on my MBP, I have to synchronize it between two libraries. That sounds like an ugly situation.

  • Best way to sync and view other videos formats

    hi all,
me and my wife both have iphones and  have recenly bought a ipad and apple tv. I am getting a bit frustrated as i cant work out the best way to store and easily view my old pics and video files.
the shops salesman convinced me to by knowhow cloud which seemed brilliant but it wont back up al photos so ill go back to the shops. its just app on the phone that shows all pics stored on my windows pc
i also want to know what way is best to store and view some .mod files or moi files. I have air video which works great for divx files but not the ones i want ex my video camera
    any help greatly received
main reason for the ipad is to create a central hub for viewing pics and videos on and streaming to tv in background when we have parties or just remenicising

Unfortunately, the playback of non-iOS-native video formats (everything except mov / mp4 / m4v) is horrible through Apple TV and it, because of the inherent speed restrictions of Wi-Fi, can't be helped other than:
    - pre-converting your video files to mov / mp4 / m4v before playing them. (THis is the best solution.) For this, you will want to use the absolutely best and fastest video converter, the free(!!!) HandBrake. Don't ever think of paying any money for any video converter - most other titles are way inferior to HandBrake. (See http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps for more info on this q.)
    - using a VGA or HDMI adapter and connecting your TV directly to the iPad.
In the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18697551?ac_cid=sa123456#18697551 , we've also discussed this problem (AirPlay vs. cabled playback)

  • Best way to show a "kiosk type" video done with final cut pro. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Was hoping to get some pro opinions (no pun intended) on the best way to send my edited final cut vid (png format for super clear text) to 32 inch monitors that will play them in the "store". We have 4 tvs, and they all need to show the video, and the sound (music) accompanying the video. The video is around 8 hours long (bunch of edited video clips to music) and will have to loop somehow. It's much too long for a dvd, as I want to keep the quality primo, so I was considering either a video ipod, or an actual computer. Just the ipod is so mall and frail (lol not really but around the people I work with it would be), and a computer might be overkill. Any ideas or opinions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Best way to control graphics synchronized to video cue points

    Hello,
I've recently completed (well, 'completed' is a strong word)
a phase one implementation of a synchronized video presentation
using After Effects and Flash. The basic idea driving the
synchronization of cue points to motion graphics revolves around
creating a listener in the following fashion:
    var listenerObject:Object = new Object();
    listenerObject.cuePoint = function(eventObject:Object):Void {
// Put any code you like here
    trace("Cue point name: " +
    eventObject.info.name);
    my_FLVPlybk.addEventListener("cuePoint",
    listenerObject);
and then using the cue point name to play a variety of
movieclips at the appropriate time in the presentation.
The video presentation had four sections, each of which could
be arbitratrily browsed to at any point in the presentation, so it
was important that the the movieclips did not need to play in order
and that they could be interrupted at any point without an visual
    confusion.
I dealt with this two ways (I am sure these are not the best
ways, which is why I am writing this post):
First, every single movieclip was already on the stage from
the outset, stopped on the first frame, with the alpha property set
to 0 (based on Aran Balkan
    http://aralbalkan.com/444).
The final frame of each clip had a gotoAndStop(1) action on it so
that when a clip finished playing it 'reset' itself. I also wrote a
"rewind" function which pretty much did the same
thing whenever a user clicked on one of the navigational tabs.
For a first iteration, this worked pretty well, and it
impressed enough people in my organization (university) that now
the President wants to deliver a similar message. It seemed prudent
at this point to ask a general question about best practices in
this area. I am working with the full Master Collection suite, and
can target later versions of the Flash Player (I believe I can use
AS 3.0, although I will have to learn it). One thing that I am
hoping any pointers you guys might have will cover is this:
How do you handle starting/stopping/pausing of the video and
also make sure any currently playing graphical assets also
start/stop/pause on cue? I was thinking of setting a variable on
the second frame of each movieclip, something along the lines of
'nowPlaying = this;' and then resetting that to null at the end of
the clip and in the rewind function, then using that variable to
control the currently playing clip (would have to bu just one, I
    imagine).
But there has got to be a better way. I have some down time
to do research and to experiment, but it is going to be very high
profile when it rolls around, so I thought I'd send out some
    feelers.
Has anyone done anything like this? Seen a better way? Etc .
    Thanks so much.

Best practice is to keep one single file as long as humanly possible.
In this case, you "branched" a version for another format; I'd suggest you don't edit that any further (apart from the formatting stuff you mentioned), but inform your client this version is to be worked on. Work on your "real" version until it's really really done, and only then make other versions.
It's a different story (no pun intended) if the transition between the two versions can be automated; that way you'd still only work on the 'real' version, but then you could generate the other with every edit you make -- you should still not be doing any work in the dumbed-down version.

  • What is the best way to output audio to my DJ system?

I have a few questions I was hoping you all could help me out with!
First off I am a mobile DJ and I DJ primarily weddings and use the program djay.
I just need a primary output and a second output to cue songs.
Currently I DJ using the 1/8 stero jack on my macbook to the RCA connectors on my mixer.
Is this considered "digital" ? And is this a quality connection?
I read that the output on the mac is analog/optical, what does this mean?
What is my best way to connect my mac to my DJ system? What type of product will be best?
I don't want to spend too much. Thank you so much for your time!

  • Best Way to Output to New Page for Printing

On my website, I have a page called
"form.cfm". The output from the form gets
processed, and results displayed onscreen, by
"formProcess.cfm" What is the best way to take
the form data displayed on formProcess.cfm and output it to a new
page suitable for landscape printing? I want to have a link on
formProcess.cfm that says something like "Printer Friendly
Version". When the user clicks that link, a new window
opens with a printer-friendly page. The same form data displayed on
formProcess.cfm is now displayed on the printer-friendly page. My
biggest question is, how to get the form data to formProcess.cfm,
and then to a third page without a bunch of fancy coding that's
    above my thick head?
    Code samples are deeply appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Gwen H

New page named formPrint.cfm with just the following:
    <cfdocument format="pdf" orientation="landscape">
    <cfinclude template="formProcess.cfm">
    </cfdocument>
have the print link on your formProcess.cfm page submit the
original form data to the formPrint.cfm page.
OR, you might just want to put the cfdocument tags in the
formProcess.cfm page and just automatically provide a pdf page that
can be printed rather than generating both the htm and pdf
    versions.

  • What is best way of separating audio portion of video clip to use later

I would like to save, and use in other projects a portion of the audio of a clip.  What is the best way of getting the audo portion out of the clip it is in and into a some sort of self-contained clip of its own?

Just to build  on Tom's answer...
Given you only want a portion  of a specific clip...
    I'd say
Select the portion you want using the range tool (R)
Share | Master File | Audio Only (as Tom has said)
But even then, if you haven't disabled the other audio in the timeline (or don't want to) you'll get all of it... (Music/Camera/Effects etc)
What I do, is export Roles as separate files (Using the "Roles As" option) at the bottom of the share dialog. Either "Dialogue" or "Music" would probably suit you, I'm guessing.

  • Best transcode settings for 20+ minute sports video DVD?

I've been producing videos and DVDs for a while but I'm new to Encore. From my initial experience, the finished quality is much better than the Apple iDVD that I have been using. While I'm very happy with the DVD, I'd like to see if I can get better quality results.
Yes, I'm going from HD > SD (DVD) and I understand it's not the same thing and that the resolution is much less. I would just like help with the DVD transcode settings that I'll use to build my DVD.
I'm exporting standalone quicktime movie from FCE with no custom settings.
    My quicktime file resolution is 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 fps.
My videos are usually about 20-25 minutes long and have lots of motion in them. Any suggestions are requested.
I'm very happy with the color but some of the motion looks a little jumpy at times and some of the stills aren't as crisp as I'd like.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Time for the proverbial spanner in the works.
If you are in NTSC lands, and your source footage is HD at 24fps, you could always try encoding to the 24p MPEG-2-DVD setting.
This will put the progressive scan footage on the DVD at 24p, without degrading it to interlaced - and on an upscaling player you will get output at 24p.
If the disc is played on a non upscaling system, the player will automatically pull to 29.97, so you lose nothing and gain a lot.
The Adobe Media Encoder does a fine job of the 24p for DVD encoding as well - just remember to render out as elementary streams (.m2v and .WAV) - do not use the Dolby Digital encoder at this point (unless you need the SurCode 5.1 of course) and use LPCM - let Encore handle this.

  • What is the best way to export to achieve clear video for the internet?

Is it best to just use a preset? or are there other ways to get that clear look that you get when you watch the high def mp4 straight out of the app...?
I notice that some video is much more detailed and higher res looking...but when i upload to youtube it doesnt quite look as good...blurry... especially with smaller sizes...
    Any suggestions?
    Thx in advance.

    i agree with you Jim.
    but i didnt do that.
shot at 24p. never went anywhere near 30 for any of it. i exported at 23.987 because i read somewhere that that might be better for web video...cant even remember where...also my exports from AE were all 24p. i guess i will just keep it the same across the board.
i just wander if i use the animation codec out of after effects, full on lossless, if it would improve anythiing for the final render. I used an avid codec for export out of after effects for a better file size for the clips i put into premiere. seemed to work alright. then use h264 playback codec when i exported the final.
there is just such a difference in quality for some of the reels i see. i want that quality. clarity.
