Best word processor in regards to battery life?

Hello! I bought a new MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010) recently because I wanted something that was ultra portable and could function almost solely as a word processing machine. Anyway, the question is, based on battery life alone, what is the best word processing software for OSX (10.6.4)? By "best" I strictly mean what will let me have the program constantly running and drain the battery the slowest?
Obviously it seems like a choice between Word:Mac 2011 or iWork Pages 2009. I'd just like to have the program run in fullscreen mode and leave it like that for as long as possible, closing the lid when I'm finished writing and then opening it again to find my work exactly as I left it WITHOUT my battery being at ~6%. =)
So, anyone have some experience with what I'm trying to ask? (This is my first Apple machine ever so I apologize if I'm asking some obvious questions, I'm pretty oblivious to all things OSX.)
Thanks!

Obviously it seems like a choice between Word:Mac 2011 or iWork Pages 2009.
Hi,
In fact, there is a "in house" program named TextEdit and your may take it into consideration as well.
Anyway, I think all (Page, TextEdit and Word) would be the same.
Cheers.
Cheers.

What is the best word processor for mac?  Closest to office?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
On OS X, you have some good word processors:
    - Microsoft Word for Mac. Included in Office for Mac, it's the best option if you are going to use Word documents with your Mac > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
    - Pages. This iWork app is similar to Microsoft Word because both are word processors. This is a good app, too, that you can get from the Mac App Store > http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/
    - LibreOffice. This free suite allows you to do everything that you can do with paid suites but with a free one. It's also open-source > http://www.libreoffice.org
You can read reviews of all of them in the Internet, but I personally prefer Pages. If you want something closest to Microsoft Word for PC, obviously the best option is Microsoft Word for your Mac

  • Limiting processor speed to increase battery life.

Does anyone know of a way to limit the processor speed to increase battery life while on battery? I know of some windows utilities that will allow you to scale back the processor, to say, 1 ghz or so, so as to get better battery life. Is there any way to do this with a macbook?
    Thanks,
    Zach

Try CoolBook Controller out. It should do what you want.

  • Best word processor?

Any recommendations as to which word processor is best for Mac?

There is no best WP for any computer...there is a best WP for you but without knowing your circumstances we cannot give any meaningful advice. MS Word is great if you need 100% MS compatibility but it has a high learning curve and is more than a little frustrating to use. Pages (part of Apple's iWork suite) is very nice though it has a bit of a learning curve too. Mariner Write is quite good as are the two Nisus offerings. These are just a few of your choices. The good news is that all of them can be downloaded and tried out (and an MS Office tryout should already be on your computer).

  • What is the best word processor for mac?

I recently got an old mac and i need a word processor to use for school. It needs to be compatible with microsoft word.

Free versions that work well with MicroSoft Word are NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php and OpenOffice http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/
Or if you're running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 you have the App Store and can buy Apple's Pages for $20.

  • Best option for a word processor for the G3 dual usb running Panther

More and more I am coming to rely on my G3 for word processing tasks - particularly research notes and a personal journal.
So far I've tried the simple text editor (quick but poor text on-screen), OpenOffice (being xwindow it's slow to load and slow to update screen) and AppleWorks (good display but no spell checker) -each have problems for me.
What is the best word processor for the G3 running Panther (or Classic/9 for that matter). I need: Quick to load/run, readable text, automatic word wrap, spell checking and a reasonable path to exchange files with my desktop Linux system.

AppleWorks does have a spellchecker; it just is not automatic (check-as-you-type).
In AppleWorks, go to Edit menu > Writing Tools > Check Document Spelling.
I've never used anything (in a major way) except AppleWorks.
A couple of options which you haven't mentioned are Pages in _iWork '06_ (or earlier; the current version has left behind G3 processors) and _Microsoft Office for Mac_.
I'm unsure of how well any of these will integrate with Linux. Open Office may be your best bet there. (I'm just guessing. It seems like common sense to me that Open Office would work with an open OS like Linux.)
Another application which is creating a buzz and sounds like it could work for you is _Google Docs_. There would certainly be no problem with Linux integration there. It looks like it would be easy sharing all the way around and you shouldn't find any incompatibilities as long as you have a decently up-to-date browser.
I'm not sure anyone has developed the "perfect" word processor, but there are some good ones out there. Good luck on your quest.

  • Sales assistant gave wrong info? battery life

i've had my macbook for about 7 months. ive noticed in the past month or so, my battery life has gone from lasting approximately 4 hours (with wireless turned on) to less than 2 hours.
the sales assistant told me the best way to preserve the long battery life was to only run it on the battery, and to only have it plugged in to charge it from 0%-100%. then, when it was back to 100%, to unplug it and run it on battery.
ive been reading some information about "calibration" and "cycle counts", and im worried that the information given to me was NOT right. i checked my cycle counts, and it is at 186!
i rely on my battery life for when im at uni in lecture halls with little access to an electric outlet, and 2 hours really wont cut it when i have classes 4 hrs long.
was the information given to me incorrect? should my battery life be longer given ive only had the computer 7 months?? what should i do to rectify this?
any advice is greatly appreciated, as im still a newbie!

The sales assistant is completely wrong, if that's indeed what he/she said. You do not want to be constantly running any lithium-based battery down to zero on a regular basis. That will shorten it's life, not lengthen it. You do want to occasionally run it down to where the computer goes to sleep - not more than once per month or once every two months - to keep the charging circuitry calibrated, but other than that, charge the system whenever you can, and keep it plugged in when you don't need to run on battery. Clearly when you're in lecture you'll have to run on battery and may run the battery to zero, but don't do it deliberately.
Batteries do at times prematurely fail, but whether that's the case with your system I can't say for sure. There are many factors that will affect how long a system will run on a single charge, including how much the hard drive or optical drive is used, how much time the system spends with the backlight on, whether you're using Airport and/or Bluetooth, and how hard the processor is working. So two hours might be normal for the system's use at that particular time.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and take the system in and discuss the problem with them. If the Genius diagnoses a defective battery, they should replace it under warranty.
    Regards.

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • Battery life comparison between 1.0.2 and 1.1.1

I had to have Apple Care send me a replacement phone because of battery issues.
I received the replacement phone, and interestingly, it still had the 1.0.2 firmware on it.
If enough people are interested here, I can run a fairly scientific test to see if there's any difference between 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 in regard to battery life.
I could leave the 1.0.2 software on it, charge it fully, then at 10 pm, put it in a specific place in my house, then see what the battery is at @ 7 am. Then, the next day, I can update to 1.1.1 and do exactly the same thing with the same settings.
But if the battery issue has been put to rest, or if people think this isn't a scientific test at all I don't want to waste my time.

Your post is helpful in that it points out that it'd be a very difficult thing to do a scientific test that proves anything.
In your usage, you left out surfing the web, which I do quite avidly. I also check my email much more frequently (every 30 minutes, as I've said). I can't test for surfing the web while I'm sleeping.
Your saying that updates have nothing to do with the battery is not at all a scientific case study and has very little resonance, but it's great that in your personal experience you haven't seen a degradation in battery life. A bug can rear it's ugly head in many different places, and your usage of the phone may not hit it if in fact there is one.
Just as an endless loop in a program can cause a computer's CPU to spike if an uncommon set of events leads to it, something could be happening with the phone for some users who are using their phone in a specific way.
So, having said that, I think I might've answered my own question in that there might not be any scientific way to do a test.

  • Battery life drops if you turn second core off

This is very strange. I turned off the second processor core and the battery life dropped about half an hour. How does this make any sense?

I installed the Dev Tools but this option hasn't showed up... ran 'locate prefPane | grep -i proc', but nothing showed up so I suppose it hasn't installed it. Will try reinstalling DT when I get home, I guess.
OT: couple of other MBP troubles, anyone else had these?
    1. Blank screen when resuming from sleep - closing lid, putting it back to sleep and opening again a few times seems to fix it, so it's not a kernel panic (as mentioned in some other threads).
    2. I obviously have the ubiqitous mooing and hissing noises - cba to read forum posts on those because everyone just says 'open the mirror widget'.
    3. My left shift key is bloody hard work, and my little finger is starting to ache now because of it Just doesn't want to be pressed. Might have a look underneath; might not, 'cos I've broken keys before...
    Plays Warcraft pretty well though

  • Why does the Battery life of my iPhone 4 doesn't last as long as it used to before updating my software to iOS 6? Can this problem be fixed?

    Hey there,
I have upgraded the iOS on my iPhone 4 to the iOS 6 and now my battery life doesn't last as long as it use to. I read something about Safari syncing some currupted bookmarks and whatnot. I basically need to know how could I fix this problem. I know that the iphone needs to have a decent perfomance regarding the battery life, since I've had it for less than 6 months now.
    Any help will be appreciated!

  • What the is the battery life of HP's G60-635DX laptop? No specs?

I just saw it on best buy, but there is no battery life listed, no specs on HP.com, no review on zd.net.....
Where are the specs for this model?
I have the G60-535dx, but I am a little disappointed with the battery life. I may want to upgrade, get a Sony, or get a 12 cell battery.

The batery life mainly depends on the 6 cell lithium or 9 cell and 12 cell and they mainly depends on the Notebook. Some of the Notebooks are compatible and some or not compatible,. The minimum life of the battery is 1 hour and maximum is 2 hours it is all based on your useage. If you want to increase the battery life I would request you to click on the below web link:

  • Battery life on a Q10 after the recent update to OS 10.3.1

I purchased my Q10 in November of 2013 and one of the best things about it was the battery life. One time the battery lasted for four days (albeit with minimal phone use). I upgraded to OS 10.3.1 a couple of days ago and have noticed a drastic decrease in the life of my battery, despite the claim that the new OS was better at battery management. I went to bed last night with 46% battery remaining and woke up 9 hours later to find my phone completely dead. I even had the Wifi off and Bedside Mode on.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there some way that I can get better battery management?
    Jeremy

Try a hard reboot and then give it a few days, a new OS often means some background housekeeping is going on (this is more noticeable on clean installs).
Check the Battery in Settings -> App Manager -> Device Monitor after a week or so and see if anything obvious is causing the degradation.
If you've been helped click on , if you've been saved buy the app.
