Better utilization of cpus and memory - Concurrent processing tier

I have a three node 11.5.10.2 setup:
Node1 - Database only (10.1.0.5)
Node2 - Admin, Forms, Web
Node3 - Concurrent processing
My concurrent processing node has lot of free cpus and memory
Cpus: Average utilization 20%
Memory : Average utilization 15%
The highest spikes I've had are:
Cpus- 24% utilization
Memory - 20% utilization
What I can do on the concurrent processing tier that would make better use of the cpus/memory resources and improve performance?
I have 2 dual core Intel(R) Xeon(R) processors and 16 GB Physical memory on the concurrent processing server.
Thanks & regards,

Hi Asif,
You are seeing a manifestation of the old myth from the earlier part of this decade that you need many middle tier servers to effectively interact with users in a busy ERP environment. In reality, the middle tier processes which are normally web, forms, and concurrent managers typically consume only memory, and maybe10-20 percent CPU utilization of a modern quad core Xeon/Opteron Linux server. I have seen several 200 plus user single node 11i installations that handled the load just fine. In my experience, 95-97% of the ERP CPU utilization comes from database sessions, not from middle tier processes. Occasionally, a forms session goes to a runaway, or a ar60run process runs at 100% CPU while the request is running, but if you follow the Oracle recommendations of limiting fnd_concurrent_requests to 50k rows or less, you will not see much CPU utilization from FNDLIBR processes.
Most 32 GB 2 socket quad core servers can support 200 plus forms user connections plus host the concurrent manager as well. I would only add additional web/forms nodes after you start paging on the middle tier box. Having concurrent managers separated on a 10-20 percent utilized server is sort of a waste of a server.

-Michael

  • HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory

    Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... I am not sure why this is so and do not know if this has anything to do with my fans running very fast. HP 32GB(8x4GB)DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM RISER Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 HP 64GB (16x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 and 5492.
    Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue with the fast fans and whether there is a fix for this (maybe flashing BIOS?). Any advice is greatly appreciated! [I originally posted this under Desktops section - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-xw8600-workstation-fans-run-at-max-all-the-time-after/td-p/3929746]

    The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place.  I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor.  Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick.  I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors.  If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above.  I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly.  You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay.  You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use?  Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power.  Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks?  Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates.  Is your BIOS the latest? Welcome, and let us know what turns out to be the problem so others can benefit too. Scott

  • XML Parser and memory utilization

    I am using the sample given with
    the PL/SQL Parser to transform a
    1.5M file. When the document is
    parsed Oracle's memory resources
    increase 50M until the system
    runs out of virtual memory and
    errors out. If I decrease the
    size of the file to ~750K it
    works ok. When I use Saxon to
    transform the file it uses ~10M.
    Is there anyway to get the Oracle
    parser to better utilize memory,
    or am I missing some point?
    sg

    Hi,
    I have checked the lib folder. xmlparsev2.jar is there. Is this the classpath? if not how do i get it to the classpath? and how do i do that?
    Thanks for your help so far

  • How to display CPU and memory utilization from ST06 in a report

    Hi,
    I want to display CPU Utilization and Memory utilization and File sys details from ST06 transaction in a report.
    Is there any function module or any other method to do that.
    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    Sandeep.

    Hi Ranganath,
    Thanks for your time.
    And thank you very much for the reply.
    Both the function modules are helpful.
    But can u also help me in getting the data of FileSys from ST06.
    Thankyou,
    Sandeep.

  • Mds process shoots up CPU and Memory

    I upgraded to OS X Mavericks about a month ago and ever since, have had to disable Spotlight due to shooting CPU and Memory. The only way to get my Mac to a usable state is to add Macintosh HD to Spotlight privacy list to prevent indexing. The moment I do that, CPU and Memory get to normal.
    Here is what Memory/CPU looks when I am doing nothing on my Mac and all apps are closed:

  • Resource utilization alerts shell scripts, Memory and CPU

    Hi All,
    I am using the Oracle Enterprise Linux verison 4.6 x64 for Oracle 10g database. I want to implement some alerts for SWAP space thresholds, CPU comsumption and memory usage thresholds. For example I want an email alert is SWAP space is used 90%. Memory usage is more than 85%. CPU is 80% busy.
    I am sure that you Gurus must have implemented this kind of alerts through some tools or shell scripts so seeking your help to implement these.
    Thanks
    Naveed

    Hi Naveed,
    Firstly, I can tell you that Oracle has its own SNMP MIBs which can be used by SNMP to send trap (alerts) to various SNMP monitoring systems. If however, you are a bit like myself and perhaps don't have the cash or the need to use something so fancy, you can use Shell Scripting or in my case something like PERL.
    By using commands such as 'grep', 'awk' and 'less' (to name but a few) on can monitor simple things such as diskspace or memory.
    For example, if I were to look for diskspace usage on a partition known as u01 I could pipe in the output of 'df -h' to PERL, then run a regular expression on it looking for anything greater than 80%.
    Example of PERL code;
    # read in df -h command, looking for the partition /u01
    open(DISKUSAGE, "df -h | grep u01|");
    $diskUse = <DISKUSAGE>; #read its input
    chomp $diskUse; #remove last characterThis reads in the command into a 'buffer' in which you can search for things, i.e. to see if the disk usage is equal to, or greater than 80% from the variable $diskUse. As a starter I would look at splitting the string on empty spaces into an array for example, and reading the array index containing your disk usage. This can also be done with a Shell Script.
    Perl also has a very easy to use SMTP module which can be used for sending E-Mails. Do a search for Net::SMTP on google on how to use it. It really is very simple.
    I'm not expert on this stuff, and I'm sure there are many other and better ways of doing such things, but I hope this at least points you in the right direction.
    Best of luck,
    Conor

  • SNMP OID for CPU and Memory Utilization on a MDS 9509

    Does anyone know what the OIDs are for CPU and Memory utilization on a MDS 9509?
    Thanks

    CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB.my is a good place to start and you can determine the OID from the MIB.
    Once you feel as though you are on the right track, have a look at:
    http://www.oidview.com/mibs/9/CISCO-SYSTEM-EXT-MIB.html
    I gather that what you need is:
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.305.1.1.1
    and
    1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.305.1.1.2
    Enjoy.

  • MDB topic listener and concurrent processing

    Hello to everybody.
    I ve prototyped simple db publisher ,which publishes changed data from database to JMS topic. Then I have my MDB which listens on JMS topic.
    I setup and implemented all correctly and it worked. There was 1 consumer = 1 mdb instance. Then I tried to do load testing , So I triggered 8000 changes from database. The db adapter did the job and published the 8000 messages on the JMS topic in a while. To mimic processing in MDB I put the sleep(10seconds) in MDB.
    MDB topic processing seems to me as not concurrent one. Why? I observed 10 message decrease with 5-10 seconds.
    What I expected was: concurrent processing of 8000 JMS messages by 1 MDB (so MDB is poolable component isnt it?).
    So for 500 instances of topic MDB and 8000 messages on the JMS topic, I expected at least 8000/500 X 10 = 160 seconds to process message load.
    I am using WLS 816.
    Can You give me some hits.
    Thanks
    Roman

    I did the same test on Weblogic 10 and it worked as expected. MDB durable subscriber consumed 8000 messages (each msg processing had 10 secs sleep inside.) within 2 minutes. So it is ok.
    But why it did not worked on WLS 8.1? Is this a bug ?

  • Recently tried to upload photos on my iPad to the iCloud PL beta and in the process it removed all the photos from my device through the photo stream. No CPU backup of photos, photos are older than 30days. Any third party recovery software I can use?

    Recently tried to upload photos on my iPad to the iCloud PL beta and in the process it removed all the photos from my device through the photo stream. No CPU backup of photos, photos are older than 30days. What can I do?

    First of all, you should always save you photos on computer like any other digital camera.
    Backup on iCloud or iTunes only backup your Camera Roll. The other photos should be already on the computer.
    Note: Photos are not saved in iTunes, it's only a conduit between your iPhone and your photo managing software on computer.
    What computer do you have?

  • How to find CPU and Memory Utilization

    Hi,
    How to find CPU and Memory Utilization of my application which is
    running in solaris workstation.My application has a management console in which we need to update the cpu and memory periodically.
    (Notr : Usage of JNI is restrcited)
    Thnx and Rgds,
    Mohan

    There is no CPU usage API in Java. You need some JNI code. For memory usage see the Runtime methods:
         * Get information of memory usage: max, total, free and (available/used).
         * <ul>
         * <li>Max is the maximum amount of bytes the application can allocate (see also java options -Xmx). This value is fixed.
         * If the application tries to allocate more memory than Max, an OutOfMemoryError is thrown.
         * <li>Total is the amount of bytes currently allocated from the JVM for the application.
         * This value just increases (and doesn't decrease) up to the value of Max depending on the applications memory
         * requirements.
         * <li>Free is the amount of memory that once was occupied by the application but is given back to the JVM. This value
         * varies between 0 and Total.
         * <li>The used amount of memory is the memory currently allocated by the application. This value is always less or equal
         * to Total.
         * <li>The available amount of memory is the maximum number of bytes that can be allocated by the application (Max - used).
         * </ul>
         * In brief: used <= total <= max
         * <p>
         * The JVM can allocate up to 64MB (be default) system memory for the application. If more is required, the JVM has to be started with the Xmx option
         * (e.g. "java -Xmx128m" for 128 MB). The amount of currently allocated system memory is Total. As the JVM can't give back unallocated memory
         * to the operating system, Total can just increase (up to Max).
         * @return Memory info.
        static public String getMemoryInfo() {
            StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
            sb.append("Used: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(getUsedMemory()));
            sb.append(", Available: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(getAvailableMemory()));
            sb.append(" (Max: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory()));
            sb.append(", Total: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()));
            sb.append(", Free: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory()));
            sb.append(")");

    Noting that the MP 09 has a removable "processor and memory board", one sees the potential for easier warranty repair by swapping out a new board for an old one, I would assume.
    Does any one see other potential in the ability to swap out the processor board and memory component?

  • L2 Cache and Memory

    I'm about to buy a MacBook, mainly for Grad School purposes, but I also do a lot with music and movies. My questions are:
    What is the difference between a 3MB and a 4MB L2 cache? Will I notice the difference?
    Will there be a noticible difference between a 1GB and 2GB memory?
    I'm looking at the refurbished MacBooks. There is one with a 1GB memory and 4MB L2 cache for $1049 (originally $1499), and one with a 2GB memory and a 3MB L2 cache for $1099 (originally $1299). Thanks!

    What is the difference between a 3MB and a 4MB L2 cache? Will I notice the difference?
    1 MB. You might notice a difference depending upon what the computer is doing, but more than likely you won't. Bare Feats has some benchmarks you can check out. If you expect to do a lot of graphics and/or audio processing then more L2 cache will help.
    Will there be a noticible difference between a 1GB and 2GB memory?
    Yes. Not so much in speed as more memory doesn't actually make the computer run faster, but with more RAM you will not notice occasional slowdowns when running a lot of apps concurrently. I would suggest adding as much RAM as possible. This is a good investment in the long run.

  • What are the minimum CPU and Memory requirements for R12 Vision instance?

    We are in the process of trying to figure out what the minimum hardware requirements are for installing the R12 Vision instance. This Vision instance would only have 5 or less concurrent users. We may have to order a new server and we are wondering what the minimum CPU and memory would be? Oracle Support will not give us this information.
    We aleady know how much disk space it will need.
