Big band scoring in Logic

Has anyone had any success writing for a big band in logic and then printing out the parts with a satisfactory result?
I know that Logic can do it, but just wondering if it works well enough for a professional level project
Thanks

I've done full orchestra scores in Logic. I doesn't have the look of good Sibelius or Finale, but if all the parts are already in, sometimes it is faster. The notation is fine and readable - much better than a lot of the handwritten charts I have seen over the years. If you need falls, shakes, scoops, graphic wah wahs and other stuff, you might need a real notation program (it might be there, I never looked for that stuff).
Goodluck.

  • Garritan Jazz/Big Band and Logic

Hello. I've mostly used Jam Packs with Logic, I'm new to using another player within Logic, Kontakt is what comes with Garritan Jazz and Big Band. The issue I'm having is when you load a multi/ensemble from Kontakt into Logic, I can't seem to control the volumes separately. It seems to show up in the Logic mixer as "Inst 1" -- is this making sense? Sometimes I'm confused by all the tabs/choices in the mixer section too...but that's probably a different issue. Anyway, if you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Thanks. Bob

The bottom line is that has been one of Logic's most glaring "missing features" for years, in my book.
The problem stems from the fact that Logic can't separate the channels (or 'channelize') the volume and pan controls for the individual MIDI channels of a multitimbral virtual instrument. By contrast, Logic has no problem doing this with external MIDI modules. And other DAW's - I'm told - have no problem separating the volume commands for individual channels of a virtual instrument. But Logic "Pro" still can not.
So you have to set up a bunch of virtual 'aux' channels, route the various VI channels to the separate AUX's, then control or automate the volume of those aux channels separately from the 'master' VI. Personally I can't believe people don't complain more about what a needlessly awkward workaround this is, all to achieve the same basic functionality we've had in MIDI for almost 20 years now .
But that's the way it's always been done on Logic, and from the looks of it, there's no reason to expect it to change anytime soon.
Search the forums (or Kontakt's manual or Garritan's site) for info on how to set up numerous auxiliary outs, and that should get you going. There are also numerous tutorials and how-to's on this forum and others, which you can probably find if you search "multitimbral aux".
Lastly, some folks resort to automating volumes within the plugins, ie. adjusting the channel volume sliders on Kontakt's internal mixer while the sequence runs, then editing that automation later in Logic. Again, I think it's a kludgey workaround. But Kludgey Workarounds have always been a big part of the Logic Pro 'experience!'
    Enjoy.

  • Logic 8 with Garritan Jazz & Big Band

    Hello
Anyone using the Garritan Jazz & Big Band Kontakt Plugins inside of Logic 8? If so have you run into any problems...especially memory problems. And how much ram are you running Logic 8 with in this situation? Your minimum ram requirements?
    Thanks for answering...John
PS And how does your JAAB score work out in the Logic 8 Score Editor?

I'm working just fine with both the GPO and JABB and Logic 8.01. I use the multi-instruments option which seems to help save RAM usage. This is in contrast to loading up each instrument individually with single instances of either the Kontakt 2 or the Kontakt 2 Player (which "powers" JABB and GPO). It seems like when I (and others) load up individual instances of Kontakt, RAM usage is significally increased.
There's been a number of discussions here (and on other Apple support bulletin boards) regarding this issue. The discussions are all worth the read if you have the time. However, utilizing the Multi-Instrument function seems to significantly keep down RAM usage (for me, anyway).

  • Best Logic Big Band?

I am trying to find a sweet collection of jazz big band instruments for the EXS24; can anyone here recommend anything? All I've found of a specific collection is Garritan's which uses N.I. Kontact Player, and I don't wanna use Kontact! I don't! I DON'T! <dropping to the floor and turning blue>

For what its worth, I've seem to remember reading favourable reviews of First Call Horns - not sure about Captain Beefheart though!
Collections like this tend to include little bits that might be useful in a general way - if you have Melodyne you can create new things from them though..
It shouldn't be too difficult to find bits of solo avante garde sax on existing recordings that you could sample and re-arrange (yeah, I know....)

  • Garritan Marching and Big Band

    Hello all,
I have been beta testing Garritan's Marching and Big Band Instruments on my Intel iMac using GarageBand 3. Thought you all might like to hear a piece I came up with. Note: I did not do much in the way of plunger muting (though I could have). I just put this together in a few of hours. There is about 16 tracks. Three of them (piano, Jazz Bass, and Pop Drum)are GarageBand-native.

  • Arranging Big Band Charts with Score Editor

Ahhh, the score editor is so untuitive. The way it's programmed, so that you have to space the note just right to get the desired result. And sometimes ya gotta switch the notes and try again and then retry... Ayayayaya. Well, anyways, my question is: Is there a way I can prefrerize the score editor so that the notes/rests I select are put in, and that I can make my own ties (the ties are reallly frusturating). I'm arranging a chart for my big band, so.... go Logic!
    Cheers!

Have partially answered my own question- have worked out how to change note sizes to the smaller cue-type display, not quite sure how to designate them non-playing though still appearing in the score though.

Does anyone know if Garritian Jazz & Big Band 3rd edition is compatible with Logic Pro X? Or, does anyone know of a good Jazz and Big Band Plug-in for Logic Pro X? Thank you

I wouldn't bother. That radio listing is only intended as a sample listing and has never been updated.

  • How to get good Big Band horn sounds?

Getting good live horn sounds such as trills on trumpet and sax seems impossible without a live player. Any advice of sample libraries to use with EXS?
    G5 dual 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5 Gig ram/Presonus Firebox

As a horn player for 25 years, I have found this to be the most poorly represented area for samples that don't consist of licks and riffs. The best Big Band sounds I've heard to date is Garriton Jazz and Big Band.

  • Opening Garage Band files in Logic Express

I'm a school music teacher and have just started using Logic Express 7 to open kids' Garage Band files for tidying up and polishing.(Still a beginner with logic I'm afraid!) Have just purchased Logic Express 8 update, but haven't installed it because I heard that it won't open Garage Band 3 files. Is this true? If so, is it possible to have both 7 and 8 running independently on the computer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The original release of LE8 had a bug which required a workaround to open GB files. The subsequent 8.0.1 update fixed that. After you install LE8, go to Software Update and install the 8.0.1 update and you will be fine.

  • Can i install Garage Band Loods into Logic Pro X?

I just started using Logic Pro X. Based on the version of Garage Band on my iPhone I expected to find many more rock-oriented loops, drum kits and beats. Is this stuff only on iPhones? For example "60's Shuffle", "Bar Band Basic Drumset", "Brush Train Drumset", "Crowd Groove Drumset", "Funked Out Drumset", all this stuff and many many more loops should be in Logic Pro X Loops right?

I'm not sure how I did that, since I started with Logic 8, so my loops could be from 8, 9 or X, though I believe they do not really differ much between the versions. I believe Logic just takes the name of the folder(s) to get those dropdown names, but I'm not sure about that either. I'm also not sure if the GB loops are/were also installed if you never had GB installed, though that could well be.
So, all in all I'm pretty unsure, it seems.

  • HT201368 I got an error message when trying to import a Garage Band song into Logic Express 9.

Logic Express 9.1.8 (which I have) claims to be the most recent update.

YOu have not provided any system info, not told us what version of AE you use, your audio setting, what specifics in the audio file and a million other things. See how it may not be possible for anyone to tell you anything beyond "Your computter sucks!" ???

  • Can't open a garage band song in logic express trial

I've been thinking about getting logic express, but I wanted to try the trail version first. When I try to open any of my garageband songs in logic it says, "Damaged Song or not a logic express song! Damaged songs might create problems and crashes!" After that box it says, "Rad Error! This is not a Logic Express song!" I would appreciate any advice on how I might fix this problem.

I'm not using a different user account than previously, and haven't moved anything. That said, I was able to solve the problem. Here's what I did:
    1. Right-click and select GET INFO
    2. In the INFO window, open the SHARING & PERMISSIONS panel at the bottom
    3. In the lower right corner, click the LOCK to change it to UNLOCKED
    4. In the pop-up PASSWORD window, enter your MAC password. The LOCK changes to UNLOCKED.
    5. Click the PLUS SIGN lower left, choose the appropriate Person or User/Group (me) and click SELECT
    6. The name gets added to the bottom of the GET INFO window, but with “Read only” permission
    7. Click the “Read Only” selection and change to “Read & Write”
PARTIAL SUCCESS:  The PROHIBIT badge is gone from the file, and instead of showing ZERO bytes, it now shows XXMB — for example, 32MB.
HOWEVER, when I tried to open the file, I got the message, “Your file has no content”.
TOTAL SUCCESS:  I discovered that I had to go back a level, click on the FOLDER that contained my prohibited songs, and follow the same instructions 1-7 above. Now, at last, I can access my files in the new GarageBand!
Thanks to Hang Time and Leonie for responding so quickly to my plea for help!

My brother downloaded "Big Bang Theory", in french, without me knowing.  Is there anyway to change to english version?

Okay, I found the answer myself. Going to about:config and setting browser.showQuitWarning to true, restored that option and brought it back. Thanks to anyone who is about to post. If this is false by default, it has got to change.

  • Garritan Orchestra sounds

Can I use the Garritan Personal Orchestra Sounds and the Garritan Big Band Sounds in Logic Studio? If so, how do I import and use them? Thanks in advance guys

    Hi,
Yes, that sounds silly indeed. You should read the Getting Started Guide first and then read chapters 1-4 and 10 of the LP8 User Manual.
When you install(ed) Kontakt you have (had) the option to do a custom install. Do so, and install the AU plugin.
Maybe you have already installed it; look either here: 'yourHD'/Library/Audio/Plug ins/Components, or here: 'yourHD'/Users/'you'/Library/Audio/Plug ins/Components.
    regards, Erik.
