Bitrate Streaming Quality Question

I'm a bit of an audiophile.  I stream music from iTunes to my Apple TV2 (ATV2) via AirPlay to my high(ish) end audio system with a pretty decent DAC/Preamp/Amp to my high(ish) end speakers (specifically the Peachtree Audio Decco2 DAC/Preamp/Amp to a Dynaudio Excite X12 pair of speakers and Velodyne subwoofer).
However, I cannot detect much (if any) audio quality difference between music tracks in iTunes ripped at Apple Lossless, 256kbps, 128kbps, and just a barely discernable difference at 64kbps, and that's using the idential same track ripped at those various bitrate qualities!!!  The same goes for my streaming of Pandora (64kbps moblie streaming) and/or MOG (320kbps mobile streaming) from my iPhone to my ATV2.
Is there a way to determine what the bitrate qualitiy is that my ATV2 is seeing,  is there some sort of setup I need to perform with AirPlay to ensure it accpets higher bitrate traffic, or is my Peachtree Audio Decco2 DAC/Preamp/Amp combo just that bad a$$ that it takes even the poorest of bitrate tracks and makes them sound lossless?
Thanks,
Curious Amature Audiophile

What happens if you listen to the different encodings without streaming them through 4 devices?  Can you detect a difference?  Do this with a friend playing the tracks so you cannot be biased by knowing to what quality you are listening.  Frankly you can be as audiophile as you like but the bottom line may be you really can't tell the difference.

    Hi everyone!
    I have question, how can I play Multi Bit-rate, Live, HDS Streaming? I've done huge resarch and couldn't find how to do it.
    I'm decoding stream properly from camera through Adobe Live Media Encoder to AMS.
    everything works fine when I decode single bit rate and play like this:
               var resource : URLResource = new
    URLResource("http://localhost/hds-live/livepkgr/_definst_/liveevent/livestream.f4m");
            var manifest : F4MElement = new F4MElement(resource);
            var mediaPlayerSprite : MediaPlayerSprite = new MediaPlayerSprite();
            mediaPlayerSprite.media = manifest;
            addChild(mediaPlayerSprite);
    with multibitrate - manifest file looks like this:
    <manifest xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/f4m/1.0">
      <media streamId="livestream1" bitrate="100" />
      <media streamId="livestream2" bitrate="500" />
      <media streamId="livestream3" bitrate="1000" />
    </manifest>

  • Verifying Multi-Bitrate Streaming

    I finally got our FMS 4.5 server up and running and streaming multi-bitrate.  The only problem is I can't seem to verify what stream I'm viewing and I also believe the player is not switching among the various bitrates.  Internally testing among the LAN I'm not viewing the highest quality when I should be, the image appears to be the medium quality stream.  When I test the highest quality stream as a single bitrate stream it's very clear and crisp, but not when I use the multi-bitrate stream.
    I'm using the StrobeMediaPlayback.swf that came with the server install located here c:\program files\adobe\flash media server 4.5\webroot\swfs\StrobeMediaPlayback.swf  When I right click on the player I am giving an option to select Low, Med, High but it does not work.  Selecting low does not degrade the video and selecting high does not improve the video.  I'm not sure if those options were intended for selecting the various bitrate but it's not working.  I'm not sure if the issue is with the server or the player.  I'm inexperienced with developing a player and unable to create one that offers a button to switch between auto or manually selecting a specific bitrate.
    Can anyone assist with verifying why my multi-bitrate streaming is not switching and perhaps know of a prebuilt player that can offer manual selection of a specific bitrate and toggle between auto and manual mode.

    Hi,
    I'm sorry but that control is not to switch between MBR streams. If you notice it'll give you the same options for a single stream as well. The stream that the client requests for depends upon the bandwith that is currently available. For HTTP streaming to check which stream is being requested, you can check the Apache logs here : <root_install>/Apache2.2/logs/access_log.
    For manual switch you can use  http://osmf.org/dev/2.0gm/debug.html?src=<your-url-here> player. If you're trying a HTTP stream, you may be missing the crossdomain.xml file under <root_install>/webroot, because of which you may be getting the error. Can you try placing a crossdomain.xml and trying? If you still see the error can check the error logs here : <root_install>/Apache2.2/logs/access_log and let me know what it says?
    Thanks,

  • Audio Output (quality) questions

    Hi, I recieve high quality audio from a audio imaging guy
    which I animate short animated bits to. I seem to get differing
    qualities when outputting the final animation. I know there are
    settings for the audio when I bring it into the library and I leave
    them at the default. In my publishing settings I uncheck the
    compress movie box and have played with the audio settings once
    leaving them as default and then later using the overide function
    and setting streaming quality 160 and best each with the imaging
    person not satisified with the qualit. I'ved compared the file
    sizes of both files and tried esporting to swf with no audio. Doing
    the math I can't see that in any scenario that the audio is'nt
    comprimized (based on file size). Can anyone help me to make sense
    of the audio export. I'd just like to push through the same audio I
    recieve. Is this possible? I've read the reference on the audio
    formats. As Audio is the client's business I need to output as
    close to their sorce as possible. Does any one have a reference
    where I can try to figure out what happens to audio as it's output
    as a swf.
    I'm on a Mac. I'm using Professional 8. The audio work with
    is MP3 as source from a pro(should I ask for uncompressed source?)
    . I'm publishing to Flash Player 7. I have a PC same set up too,
    but do all my production on mac and proofing on PC. Any help would
    be much appreciated.
    thank you,

    Just do all the compression outside of Flash (or don't
    compress it) and in the library for the sound, turn on the check
    mark to "use
    imported mp3 quality"
    Switch it to mono if you don't need stereo effects to save

    I am using the AWS version of the flash media server and attempting to stream content however, I am getting stuck. • Variable bitrate streaming possible with streaming edition?

    Is bandwidth detection and bitrate adjustment possible with
    Flash Media Streaming Server 3? I know the streaming edition
    doesn't support custom application deployment, so does this mean
    flexible bitrate streaming is not possible?

    you may refer to a good article by David Hassoun on Dynamic
    streaming :
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/dynamic_stream_switching.html
    server-client bandwidth detection is possible with streaming

    checkbandwidth() to invoke b/w detection.

  • Akamai streaming plugin question

    Hi everyone,
    With regards to the Akamai Basic Streaming Plugin..  I have run some tests with a sample player provided by Adobe/Akamai, as well as my own player.  It seems that I can run every akamai url provided even when the plugin is not loaded.  Is this correct behavior?  I was under the impression that the OSMF without any plugins would not play akamai streams.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

    I thought I would take a moment to update this thread since several months have passed since that last post.
    There are now two Akamai plug-ins for OSMF:
    1) The AkamaiBasicStreamingPlugin : this plug-in is open source and can be found in the OSMF source code repository and in the OSMF releases. It handles connection level and stream level authentication for FMS single and multi-bitrate streams (dynamic streaming) for both live and VOD. It also handles live connection retry if both primary and secondary encoders crash. All the metadata keys can be found in the plug-in's PluginInfo class.
    2) The AkamaiAdvancedStreamingPlugin : this is a proprietary plugin that provides Akamai HD Network streaming and improved Zeri (Adobe HTTP streaming) in addition to everything the basic streaming plug-in provides.
    If you are an Akamai customer and using an OSMF built player, you should be using one of these plugins. Which one depends on the type of media you need to play.  Contact your Akamai sales rep for a copy of the Akamai plug-ins document. It contains detailed documentation about how to use these plug-ins and also contains several samples with source.
    Thanks,

  • Flash live streaming encoder question

    Does flash8 pro encode STREAMING video as VP6 or Sorenson?
    Non live streaming is VP6, but there seems to be no
    conclusive answer as to whether live streaming uses the same

    I guess not, otherwise something like on2 flix live would
    have no reason to exist if you already own flash pro...

  • You saved me before...A quality question

    I finally got my DVD made! BUT...I swear you can see every pixel on the screen. If a man has white hair, there are white pixels all around his head. Movements look like a blur of disorganized pixels, even stationary posters on the wall have their color pixels way past their borders. Jpegs look great, titles that move do not. I went over all the quality questions I could find on here, but most of them just confirmed I am in way over my head. I can not seem to change any of the settings, not the bit rate or anything else that would seem to effect the quality. I have my project set up as a DV NSTC, I did the Adobe encoder on high quality.
    For an extreme newbie with a very important project due...does anyone have any tips???
    Pleeeeeaaaase?
    Sarah
    PS...My footage came from a DVD recorder.

    Sarah,
    While your original footage was compromised by beginning life as an mpeg, you should not be getting the extreme blockiness you are seeing with the DVD. That being said, don't expect to be able to maintain the same quality as your original footage.
    A couple of questions. Does the material look OK playing from the timeline? How are you exporting to Encore? What are your exact settings (everything and be sure to scroll all the way down...VBR, CBR, data-rate, etc)? What is your burn speed? What kind of DVD media are you using? What kind of device do you plan to play the DVD back on?
    If all else fails, try a better encoder like TMPGEnc ($60?).

  • Audio Streaming quality on ATV Airplay question

    I'm starting to build a "modest" audiophile stereo by ripping my CD's into iTunes via Apple Lossless, wirelessly streaming them to my ATV via Airplay, and then listening to them on my high(er) end DAC and / integrated amplifier. My question is, does the ATV and iTunes stream the music "lossless" over my wireless network (i.e., at ~ 800kbps), or does it "max out" around 256kbps. I ask because I don't really hear a big difference in the sound quality between the two formats and I'm wondering if I should really be running a USB from my Mac to my stereo's DAC / integrated amp.
    Any thoughts?

    Music is streamed losslessly. Specifically, whatever you are listening to, be it AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, etc. is encoded as Apple Lossless and then streamed to the ATV.
    At least I think. That's how everything has worked between iTunes and an Airport Express with AirTunes in the past (Stereophile magazine ran a test where they showed they could play an audio file via Airport Express and recover the original file's PCM data exactly from Airport Express's optical port). Things may be different with AirPlay and the new Apple TV, but I suspect it's still lossless.
    I do think it maxes out at 44 or 48 kbps, 16 bit, so if you download any high resolution files, you'd want to run USB or optical to your DAC. Otherwise, unless the AirPlay implementation's changed drastically, you're fine.

  • Bitrate quality question

    Can the average person (me) tell the difference between the default bitrate of 128 and something like 192? Though I may not be able to tell on my mac, I'm just wondering if I choose to play it later through a higher end stereo if it will more noticeable? If so, which rate should I select that will provide the best quality without getting ridiculous regarding actual noticable quality?
    Thanks.

    There is a good chance that on higher end equipment, you will be able to notice a difference between 128 vs. 192. I import in AAC @ 256 as I use high end earphones on my iPod, (Shure SE310's), & I can most definitely tell the difference between 128 vs. 256. My library is probably about 60% 256/192 vs. 40% 128. As I gained more experience with my iPod & importing, I rapidly learned that 128 just didn't meet my needs on audio quality, but I'm too lazy to go back & re-rip everything at 256. Bottom line, import settings are very subjective in nature, so you will have to let your ears be the final judge.

  • Video stream quality

    Is it possible to turn on video quality management during the online video watching????

    FMS does not change the quality setting of the stream, it can
    only modulate bandwidth dropping frame. This is a behavior common
    to all streamer servers.
    If you want to serve clients with different bandwidth,
    prepare a set of videos encoded at different bitrates. Then use a
    bandwidht measure routine to choose the right bitstream.

  • Photo stream account questions

    good day all!
    hoping to get some advice as i searched the web and cant find it.
    both questions pertain to photo stream
    1. if i am using a 'shared photo stream' is there a setting that will allow me to automatically upload every photo i take on my iphone 4s to the shared photo stream. if such what is the method.
    2. is it possible to have more than one photo stream account on the same computer. i know i downloaded icloud on my computer but it didnt tell me if it was possible to have more than one photo stream account. i noticed i could sign out of icloud and assume sign in with a different account but how would it seperate both and what would happen to the first photo stream account when i logged off the computer.
    thanks for answering!

    but my old mobile me settings
    Make sure you are using the correct Apple ID user name and password.
    On your MBAir, open System Preferences > iCloud. Deselect the box next to Photo Stream then reselect the box then restart your Mac.
    On your iOS devices tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Photo Stream off then back on, then reset.
    Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Apple TV Streaming Video Question?

    I don't know where to post this question but seeing ITunes is part of this query I will try here. I have a combination wired/wireless home network. Two laptops, one a IBook G4, and a Dell desktop. The Laptops are wireless while the desktop is wired. I have a Linksys wired/wireless router for this configuration. I have a passing interest in the Apple TV but I have everything related to ITunes on the desktop as that is my primary computer. My wife and daughter use the laptops. None of the computers are configured to communicate with each other. They just have access to the internet via the router and cable modem. My question is this...If I want to stream from the desktop to the Apple TV how would I do it? Is the fact the the router can do wireless enough and it would automatically sync to the Apple TV or do I have to modify my network for sharing? I question whether the two units will see each other without some changes in my network. If so, how do I do that? I thought about getting a USB wireless adapter for the desktop but I don't want to have to keep disconnecting the Ethernet cable every time I go wireless just to stream the video. I also hate to buy an adapter in addition to the Apple TV. Just an added cost. Any thoughts on this.
    IBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Never mind. I re-posted in the new Apple TV forum.

  • Import Quality Question

    Ok I don't know much about this but,
    How much audio quality do you lose when you import from a CD? Also, if the answer is lots, then does iTunes use that lossless audio encoder called apple lossless and if not where can I get and what do I need to use it? kinda 3 questions in one there...

    Choose iTunes > Preferences> General pane and click Import Settings.
    Choose an encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu.
    You can listen to songs encoded in AAC or Apple Lossless formats in iTunes and on iPod models that come with a dock connector. If you plan to listen to your music using a different program or MP3 player, choose MP3 Encoder.
    If you want to burn high-quality audio CDs with the songs you’re importing, without losing quality, choose Apple Lossless or AIFF. (Keep in mind that songs imported using this format use much more disc space.)
    If you’ll be playing your songs on a computer that does not have MP3 software, choose WAV.
    Choose a bit rate from the Setting pop-up menu (not available with Apple Lossless Encoder). In most cases, the default selection works well.
    Higher Quality: Choose if you chose MP3 Encoder and plan to create your own audio CDs or listen to your music with high-quality stereo speakers.
    High Quality: Choose if you play music in a noisy environment. This setting creates files that are about 1 MB in size per minute of music.
    Good Quality: Use to fit more songs on a portable MP3 player with limited storage capacity.
    Custom: Choose for greater control over the file size and sound quality.
    To choose AIFF and WAV import settings:
    Choose iTunes > Preferences>General pane and click Import Settings.
    Choose AIFF Encoder or WAV Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu.
    Choose Custom from the Setting pop-up menu.
    In the dialog that appears, choose settings:
    Sample Rate: The number of times per second the music waveforms are captured digitally. The higher the sample rate, the higher the quality and the larger the file size. Don't choose a sample rate higher than the rate used to store the music originally or you'll waste space. CD quality, for example, is 44.100 kHz, so choosing a higher rate when you're encoding from a CD is unnecessary. In general, the best choice is Auto, which uses the same rate as the original music.
    Sample Size: The number of bits used to store each sample taken as the music is encoded. The higher the sample size, the better the quality and the larger the file size.
    Channels: If you don't have stereo speakers or if your audio files are monaural (mono files are about half the size of stereo files), choose Mono. If you'll be listening through headphones or a stereo system, choose Stereo or Auto. Auto converts monaural tracks into mono files and stereo tracks into stereo files.
