Black pdf pages in safari

Occasionally (but increasingly frequently) I attempt to open pdf links in safari, only to get a totally black page. Sometimes the pdf can be accessed by saving linked file to download, but not always. This didn't use to happen - is there a solution.

Well, for a long time I've been Firefox user, but I decided to give Safari a spin. (Before anyone asks, yeah, I've got the current versions of Acrobat Reader and Safari.) So, I port over my Firefox bookmarks and start to "try 'em out" in Safari. Boy, what a surprise! I follow a link to a bookmarked site that I know has pdf files. I click a file, and what do I get? A black screen! I try over websites for pdf files and it's the same thing--no pdf files will open. I launch Firefox just to make sure those pdf files do open. Yep, they open for Firefox.
I reboot Safari--no solution. I reboot the machine--no help. I then start looking for a selection in Safari's preferences where I tell Safari it's okay to open pdf files. As you all know (and I did, too), there is no such a preference.
I spend several minutes checking to see if Safari will play movies, etc. Everything seemed to work. I try pdf files again.
The next pdf file I try and I get an error message saying Safari can't find Acrobat Reader and has me navigate to Reader. Well, it will only allowed me to select Reader 8, not Reader 9, the most current reader version. I select Reader 8, and the pdf file opens.
What a struggle! Maybe I'll just stay with Firefox.

  • Trouble w/ PDF pages in Safari

I can't view pdf pages within Safari; they just show up black.  Is there an easy fix?

    Hello,
You should try to go to the : Your Hard Drive / Library / Internet Plug-ins folder (not the Home folder).
If you see a file with PDF in its name drag it to the trash.
    Quit and restart Safari.
If it works you can empty the trash.

  • Black PDF file in Safari and Preview

    Hi all,
On our website, we have a number of PDF files. These are produced by another company. One of these PDFs shows up black (or actually dark grey; rgb(7,3,1)) when opened on a Mac in Safari or the Preview app.
Opening these PDFs in Acrobat Reader does not show any problems, it only occurs when viewing them in the Preview app and in Safari (which uses the Preview app, it seems to me). All of our other PDFs do not have any problems.
I have been able to reproduce the problem on a MacBook running OS X 10.7.2 and Safari 5.1.2. The company that produced the PDFs says it is a configuration error on my MacBook and not their fault. I have been trying to follow a remarks from other threads that I found, but none of them solved the problem. We are now getting more and more complains from other visitors that are having the same problem.
The PDF can be found at http://www.husbanken.as/regelvrk/hb-nr.nsf/2FD1894DDA5135BCC125712D003CDE8D/$FIL E/hb9s01.pdf. We have several other PDFs at http://www.husbanken.as/regelvrk/hb-nr.nsf/WebSkjema, and the other ones have no problems.
Is anybody familiar with this problem? Is there a solution, that I can send to our clients, apart from telling them to use another webbrowser and view the files in Acrobat Reader? Has something gone wrong in producing these PDFs?

This could be part of the problem >  Known Issues | Adobe products on Mac OS 10.7 Lion
You can have Safari set to open PDF files in Preview.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder then click Get Info.
In the Get Info panel click: Open with
    Select Preview
    Click: Change all

  • Cant change pdf pages in safari

I recently bought the iPad 3, and so far so good, But i just encountered a problem:
I was browsing through my course documents in safari and when i click on pdf files i can only see the first page, i cant scroll to other pages or anything.
I tried to download the adobe reader app but it didnt do much, according to the manual you can just "open in"  but i couldnt find such option.
Also is there a way to download the pdf files into newsstand or adobe reader? That would be simply marvelous
    Thanks in advance

If you have installed Adobe Reader or iBooks then you should be able to see the PDFs in those apps. When you select a link to a PDF in Safari tap on the PDF to get the Open In choices. Once you open the PDF in iBooks or Adobe Reader it will be copied there so you can view it later if desired.

  • What has happened to the pdf toolbar in Safari 5.1.2?

I'm using Safari 5.1.2 with OS X Lion.
Usually when I open a pdf page in Safari and move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the Safari window, the pdf toolbar shows options like zooming, open in Preview.app or save to downloads folder, but this function appears to have been deleted. I used this feature all the time. Is it gone? Why?

It is supposed to be there, e.g., I have it on mine.
One possibility: a third party software/plugin/extension conflict.

  • Can't save pdf's in Safari/Lion

Before the problematic ridden Lion OS, I was always able to save a pdf page in Safari simpy be Save or Save as.  Now I always get the annoying message ''File xxxx can not be exported as xxxx.pdf".   What?  Been doing this for years until the new OS.  Is there a magic setting somewhere to be able to save?
Getting very disappointed with this OS.
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Safari Black Screen of pdf pages

How can I open pdf files with Safari 5.1.8 and not get a black screen?

I'm searching for an answer to this as well. The PDF is actually there, so if you control-click or right-click you can download the pdf and open it in Acrobat or Preview.

  • Why does an e-mail PDF open as black blank page?

I received an e-mail with a PDF attached; when I click on it, it opens briefly to show a legitimate page, then "dissolves" into total black and I can't get pages to show again.  I have an i-mac running OSX-5 without intel.  It seems this happened after I upgraded; since I could not locate system requirements, I assumed that the automatic notification made the automatic download "safe".  Would really like to view the attachment on this computer.  Also, the PDF switches to Safari rather than Adobe to open the document.   In fact, I notice that as I write, this is in Safari, rather than the Adobe Web site where I started.  Perhaps someone can help me clean up my operation.    Should I trash the Adobe presently running and go to a lower number?  I currently am using Adobe 9. I am also not particularly computer smart, so please be patient with me.

    Hi

  • PDF page not showing in browser window in Safari

When I click on a pdf link while in Safari browser, for instance "download full equipment list", I get a blank page. I have downloaded the latest PDF Flash Player. I am using Safari 4.0.3. I use OS 10.5. I didn't have this problem before 10.5. I don't use this very much, so I do not know what the precipitating event could have been. This does not happen when I use Firefox (but I am not fond of Firefox).

    Thank you for the replies.
I downloaded the Flash PDF Player because it was a suggestion as to why I may not be able to access PDF documents through Safari. Removing it is irrelevant at this point since the problem was occurring before I downloaded the Flash PDF Player.
My guess is that it has to do with Safar. As I mentioned, I do not have this problem with Firefox.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi..

Move the AdobePDF browser plugin to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
If you have problems locating the plugin...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:

    Click Go

  • When I download pdf files in Safari I get a black screen.  However, if I open a pdf in Mail it is viewable in Preview.  How do I fix this?

When I download pdf files in Safari I get a black screen.  However, if I open a pdf in Mail it is viewable in Preview.  What is wrong?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

    Hi snoreaustralia,
It sounds like you just need to associate the PDF filename extension with Acrobat, rather than Preview. Please see this document from the Microsoft Help for instructions on choosing the default program for opening a particular file type (in your case, PDF): Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help
