Bless You, Camera Raw Engineers

Sometimes it's the little things that count - really.
I have a favorite lens - a Canon 28-135 zoom - which I've used forever and simply love.  It's an extraordinarily good copy and even though it's a zoom it produces images that would be good even from a prime.
But the one niggling little thing it has always done that I am not completely happy with is, to leave me with just a little bit of CA - color fringing.  I guess I'm particularly sensitive to CA - I really don't like it.
Camera Raw versions up through 6.6 have done a passable job of eliminating it, though I would often have to tweak the results just slightly, and often I just couldn't achieve perfection across the entire image.
Now with the 6.7 beta the CA is gone.  I mean ALL gone.
A long, long time ago, when I had first gotten a new Canon 10D, I took a decent snapshot of a little car with this lens, and over time I've reprocessed the raw file over and over again as a fun exercise.  I just did it once again using Camera Raw 6.7 RC1, and I just say, the absence of CA just struck me.
I remember the discussions, wayyy back when shooting raw was coming into fashion, where people were saying that better and better raw converters would become available over time, and thinking, "how could they get that much better?"  It's funny, now, to be on the other end of more than a decade looking back on that, and realizing that the prediction really has come true.
To the Camera Raw Engineers:
Thanks for coming through with the new CA correction algorithm.  It is MUCH appreciated.  You've perfected my favorite lens.
-Noel

I bought a used but still expensive pro quality zoom a couple of years ago. Lens Profiles reduced the CA but far from eliminated it. Even manual tweaking couldn't get rid of the CA evenly across the image, and I usually compromised. I also have a cheap-ish telephoto zoom which is more symmetrically affected by CA, but I could never totally eliminate it. My wide-angle zoom always needed a moderate amount of correction too.
Since 6.7, CA is gone.
I can't overstate how cool this is. Not only are coloured fringes a thing of the past, but my images are automatically sharper now, because the colour channels are correctly aligned by default. No arsing about. When working on images now, I keep finding myself thinking I've forgotten to do something.

  • Can I edit my RAW files from Aperture in Adobe Camera Raw in CS5?

I like Aperture for organizing my files and doing simple adjustments. I purchased CS5 and will be taking a class to learn more complex editing. Is there a way to store my photos in Aperture and get them into CS5's Camera Raw in the RAW format? When I try to do that they are tiff or jpg.

In the preferences you are able to select which file type you would like to export to an external editor, the assumption is that you have made basic corrections and accept the RAW processing in Aperture so want to work with a tif or jpeg.
If you are wanting to start from you camera RAW file, ie no processing, you will need to actually export the master file and work from it.

  • Photoshop CC says up to date in CC Desktop but Camera Raw is still 8.3

When I look at my CC desktop app it says Photoshop is up to date but I know it's not becaus it's still using Camera Raw 8.3 and the 8.4 has been officially released for a week now.
It detected that my Lightroom was needing an update so I think the CC desktop is OK.  Also, when I go into Photoshop and select "Updates" from the help menu it does not find any updates.
I already tried signing out and deleting the OMM.db file or whatever it's called and that did not work.
This is not the first problem I've had with updates either.  One of the solutions says to remove and reinstall the app needing updates.  How am I supposed to know if an app needs an update if it does not prompt me?  The only reason I know about Camera Raw is because it's tracked by the photo community and people need that updated all the time to support new cameras.

Fc4122 can you please confirm the version of Camera RAW you are currently utilizing?  You can find the version by completing the following steps:
    Mac OS:
    Launch Photoshop CC
Go the the Photoshop Menu and select About Plug-In
    Choose Camera RAW
    Windows:
    Launch Photoshop CC
Go to the Help Menu and select About Plug-In
    Choose Camera RAW
If you can please post the version of Camera RAW version which is indicated it would be appreciated.
If you Camera RAW 8.3 is listed then please remove and reinstall Photoshop CC.  If necessary the installation logs can be reviewed to determine why the update may have failed.  You can find more details on how to review your installation log files at Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cc.html.  You would want to focus on the log file for the Camera RAW update which failed to apply.  You are welcome to post any specific errors you discover to this discussion.

    Merci d'avance.

You can get Camera Raw 8.5 right now.  Some folks have reported trouble installing it, however, via the automatic means.  This link may help you:

  • Hi please can you help me. I have photoshop CS5 extended, I bought a new camera Nikon D610 I want to edit my photos adobe camera raw , but when I try to open photoshop CS5 it will not open. Please can you tell me how to download and install the camera raw

HI bought a new camera Nikon D610 , I am using adobe photoshop CS5 extended, I want to edit my photos in camera raw but it is not possible to do so . I need to download camera raw plugin for CS5 can some tell me how to do so or if there is a link for the camera plugin.
    Many thanks Pitt.

For that Nikon model you need ACR 8.3 that means CS6 or CC.  Or you can download the DNG converter convert your Nikon RAW files to Adobe RAW files. And then process the Adobe RAW files with CS5 ACR version  6.7

  • How do you open more than one image at a time in Camera Raw?

We used to be able to select more than one image from a folder and process one after the other in camera raw. Now we can only do one at a time. Is there a secret keyboard short-cut to allow this still?

Which operating system are you using?
One should still be able to open multiple files into camera raw.
Camera raw files. tiffs and jpegs.
If in the pse 13 Editor in the Expert mode you go to File>Open in Camera Raw, you aren't able to open more than one file into camera raw?

  • Why You Should Set Photoshop to Open Your JPGs in Adobe Camera RAW | Creative Suite Podcast: Photographers | Adobe TV

In this episode of the Adobe Creative Suite Podcast Terry White shows the advantages of setting Photoshop to open your JPGs in Camera RAW by Default.

Thanks Terry! I’ve been using this for a few years and settled on the somewhat more flexible approach… As you mentioned, Bridge offers an explicit command to open a JPEG or TIFF in Camera Raw, which I do, but then with a press of Shift I can open that JPEG as a smart object and revisit CR controls for further adjustment at any time later in the process.

  • How do you install Camera Raw 8.3 to CS5 photoshop so I can open files ?

How do you install Camera Raw 8.3 to CS5 photoshop so I can open files? Thanks

CS5 does not support ACR 8.5, it only goes as far as 6.7.
You will need to convert your raw files to DNG format with the free converter. http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html

  • How cn I install camera raw on to my computer.  I have CS5 but no separate camera raw application ? Thank you

How can I install camera raw on to my computer.  I have CS5 but no separate camera raw application ? Thank you

Camera Raw is not a separate application that can be identified and used separately from Photosho. It is a plug-in that is accessed from Photoshop or Bridge or Photoshop Elements. When you attempt to open a raw image the plug-in is activated if it is able to recognize the files created by the camera you used. However, support must be provided for every individual camera model. Updates must be provided with this new support. The latest version of Camera Raw that can be used with Photoshop CS5 is Camera Raw 6.7. You can find out what version of Camera Raw is installed by going to the help menu in Photoshop and then clicking on plug-ins->Camera Raw. If the version that is reported is older than 6.7 then you can click on help->updates and obtain an installation of the last version of Camera Raw you can use. If your camera is newer than what was supported in Camera Raw 6.7 then you will have to use the DNG converter or purchase Photoshop CS6, or subscribe to the creative cloud photography plan ($9.99/month).

  • Where can I find the plugin to open camera raw files for Nikon D810 for Photoshop CS5.1? I've looked around the site but cannot get this to work.. Thank you.

Where can I find the plugin to open camera raw files for Nikon D810 for Photoshop CS5.1? I've looked around the site but cannot get this to work.. Thank you.

See for yourself which version of ACR is needed for that camera’s RAW files
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
then check your version (Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw).
Your version of Photoshop does not support that version of ACR.
You could use the free DNG Converter.

  • How do you crop outside the image in Adobe Camera Raw?

I would like to create a crop of a portion of an image in Adobe Camera Raw AND include some area outside that image. Is there a way to do this.

You can't do that in ACR, but you can if you open it in Photoshop and use the crop tool there.

  • Do you have any neartime plans to implement Fuji Xe-1 RAF format of RAW files into Adobe camera RAW?

having recently purchased the amazing fuji x-e1 i was quite disapointed to find a lack of RAW support for the fuji's RAF files.
are there any plans to add this soon or to the next update of adobe camera raw?

This is a user-to-user forum.  Although there are some Adobe employees who monitor this forum occasionally, you are not addressing Adobe when you ask a question.  Most of the people who comment here are simply users like yourself.  However, you should know that updates are made available about every three months.  And, usually, new cameras will be supported in the next version of Lightroom and Camera Raw, unless the camera is released too close to an Adobe update.  If that happens, then you can usually expect support for the camera to be in the next update.  None of us know when that will happen, and anyone who works for Adobe is not at liberty to divulge that information.  Your camera will probably be supported in the near future, but you will simply have to wait and see when that will take place.  I know, not a real satisfactory answer.  But that's the way it is.
