Blur Help

Hello,
I have some problems creating a blur effect. Whenever I use for example radial blur and then try to save theimage as a png or svg for rendering the image canvas gets extended. My question is how do I remove the parts of the blur effect that extends outside the wanted canvas area?
Thanks in advance
Erik

I'm not sure why scotts advice doesent solve your problem... when you say image canvas i presume you mean the artboard correct? Are you saving for web and devices if so Scotts advice is the key. I think you are exporting to png, in that case in the export dialogue box you must have use artboards checked and range relevant to the artboard you working on or 1 if you only have... err 1.G
Ps. save for web and devices the better option...

  • Motion Blur help.

Alrighty, I'm using Photoshop CS4 Extended, and I'm having troubles with motion blur.
When I set the angle to anything above 60 really and distance to about 300 it crashes saying Adobe Photoshop CS4 has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This happens every time. So I tried restarting Photoshop, then restarting my computer, then I uninstalled and reinstalled fresh and it still crashes when I begin to use motion blur, infact I believe it even crashed just by opening the motion blur window for over 40 seconds.
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot Mylenium! I'll do that in a few minutes, by the way heres an update with some more information.
Photoshop crashes when I change the angle to 49 or higher, anything lower is fine.
I went to my event viewer and I found this:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, faulting module mmxcore.8bx, version 11.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000d62a.

  • Can't get the right animation in Simple Blur - Help on How To

Ok. Opening shot of a project.
Going from black to a photo still. About 5 seconds total duration of the intended effect.
I drop Simple Blur onto the front of the clip containing the photo.
There's a nice transition from black to vague blobs to a focused, clean image.
But what I want is 4.5 seconds of very slow fade into unrecognizeable blobs, and then a quick half-second focus into the image. You don't recognize what's coming into focus until the very last moment.
Setting keyframes and curves on the simple blur and compositing opacity video animation parameters does not seem to be enabling me to get the desired effect. Even if I set both parameters to "maximum blur" and "maximum opacity" until the final half-second. The result is not what I'm after.
Moving the blur parameter doesn't do much but adjust from kind-of-blurry-but-recognizeable to perfect focus.
The opacity parameter just seems to change the brightness of the image (but not from total black to 100% image.
There seems to be another aspect of this transition that I'm looking to control, but can't.
    Ideas?

I hope, I'm not lost in translation … what I would do:
split your clip at the position from 'blurred' to 'keyframed blurr':
it allows you to create a looooong dissolve
    and a rapid blurred>>sharp effect
is that what you're trying to accomplish?

  • My credit in photoshop are blurred, HELP PLEASE, have a deadline

I am creating credits in PSD, save as PNG, 300 resolution and the fonts are blurred in FCP6

    A few questions....
How are you monitoring your video? With an external monitor? Or just in the canvas?
What is the pixel dimension of your psd image? Eg: 720x576, 1024x576. You must note that '300 resolution' means nothing in video-world, it's fine for print where dpi actually means something, but not in video.
What is the format/compressor of your sequence?
What are your final-delivery requirements? Is it for broadcast?
What font are you using? You need to steer clear of fonts that are too thin, and with 'serif' (little tails and flurries on the tips of letters).
How are you manipulating the psd file in Fcp? Eg, is it scrolling? Have you had to re-scale? Etc
Have you got your render settings all correct?

  • Image scaling issues

I am using a 1280x720 PNG for the background in my Flash movie, but when I play it in fullscreen the image looks like crap. What's the best way to make images still look good when the movie is scaled up? Should I use a 1920x1080 PNG and scale it down instead?

    Let me help you understand.
Resampling occurs even without scaling on any bitmaps with smoothing enabled. A pixel level detail loss is noticable immediately, pixels are resampled until blurred.
Without turning on smoothing, the original image has no original resampling applied. Scaling performs a cleaner nearest neighbor resample that preserves hard pixels. At original size and while upscaling this produces a much cleaner result. While pixel edges are less resampled (upscale blur) the detail is still intact.
While turning smoothing on, the original image is immediately resampled (bilinear, trilinear, bicubic, etc). The pixel detail loss is immediately obvious even at original scale. This blurring helps during rotation and reduction but during upscale the amount of resampling get heavier and heavier until the image is excessively blurred. The only slight benefit is edges appear smoother, but the reality is the edges are blurred to death. This is why it very limitedly helps to some people but really doesn't help at all.
Here's an example of a small choice piece of a free Harley poster showing the effects of smoothing at original and 200% scales. An additional small portion of the original image is scaled 3x (nearest neighbor resampling (no smoothing)) to illustrate the difference in pixels even at original scale. The detail loss, while much less at original size, is still visible with smoothing.
    Example Image
The top 3 images are with smoothing enabled. It's immediately obvious the level of blur is pretty harsh on the original image. The zoom-in shows the pixel blurring compared to the image with no smoothing below it. Color is shifted and muddied from bright to dark very noticably.
The upscaled image is where the real destruction takes place. The curved tire, angled spokes and spring are the most harsh environment for nearest neighbor scale. Smoothing has blurred them so much in the resample they appear a lot smoother. Only it's so blurry you can barely look at the picture without your eyes watering. To a photographer, this is a throw-away photo, far too out of focus.
The bottom image shows no smoothing enabled. The original size bitmap retains a great deal more pixel clarity and detail. The 300% zoomed image shows much brighter, more accurate colors having not been resampled. During the upscale the pixels are only nearest neighbor therefore you can see the extremely slight anti-aliasing performed. Hard pixels stand out more, much more true to the original image. Highlights on metals are still bright, colors are more accurate and more pixel level detail is exposed and enlarged. While edge enhancement would be nice, it looks far better without blurring the details and colors out of existence.
Therefore smoothing really doesn't help upscale or even original size without pixel and color destruction. The best option is not to require Flash to perform any scaling on a bitmap unless edge-only resampling becomes available. The small benefit it gives is working with a far less quality bitmap which might render some slight performance advantages in memory ops for huge images. At the loss of detail, this is arguably more of disadvantage than advantage.

  • Imported images have jagged edges when scaled down

Perhaps I'm missing something really obvious (like the quality thing in the After Effects timeline), but I imported a Photoshop image, a logo, scaled it down to 15%, and it has jagged edges. Ditto for a TIFF version of same. Starting resolution is plenty large.

You can adjust the apparent size of the image in the "media" tab of the property inspector. Select the photo in the media bin (not the layer in the timeline), then the media tab in the insepctor.
try reducing the size of the image to the size you are scaling it to (of course, you'll have to adjust the scale property of objects in the timeline which use that image). for example, if the image is 1000px wide, and you're scaling it 15%, then adjust the media size to 150px and restore the scale to 100%.
YMMV but it's worked well for me. sometimes adding a slight gaussian blur helps (<.25). it would be more effective to scale in an image editing app (like photoshop) to the desired size, but this is more flexible.

  • Adjusting a grayscale scan so it's black and white

A client sent me a grayscale scan of a line drawing with small text. The lines and text, which should be black, are gray. And the background, which should be white, is a light gray.
The lines should be 100% black, but I'll take what I can get. I fiddled with curves and contrast and stuff, but when I'd get the background adjusted so it was completely white, then the lines weren't dark enough.
And of course converting to a bi-level bitmap made the lines and text all pixelly and horrible.
FWIW, this will be offset printed, so it needs to be high resolution.
    Suggestions?
    TIA,
    Marlene

Up the resolution 2 x using bicubic smoother (if your version of PS has it, otherwise just bicubic).
Then, I usually blur the drawing slightly (maybe .5 - 1 pixel) so that I can add gain to the lines if they are too fine. You might want to avoid the blur step as you have text; test it and see. Also, blurring helps smooth out pixel jaggies if the original image is too low a resolution.
Then use image.. adjust.. levels to make a "bitmap" by pulling together the black and white sliders of the input levels. You don't want the sliders to touch (as Bill's threshold will do), you just want them close together so you're controlling where the bitmap will "break". Make sure to zoom in and inspect your image. You might use a levels adjustment layer for easier tweaking.
You're shooting for a bitmap image of between 800 and 1200 ppi/dpi at print size, so do the math and up-res again (using bicubic smoother) to the correct resolution. Then make the image a bi-level bitmap (image.. mode.. bitmap).

  • Screen capture blurry in final cut, but not Motion

I screen captured something from the internet using snapz pro (I tried DV-ntsc, h.264, and now using 'none'). It looks great when its motion, but after render, looks bad in final cut. I tried bringing the file into motion and then exporting a loss-less from there and then bringing into final cut, but its the same problem of being blurry.
the video was captured 4x3, though its larger than 720x480. Thats one of the reasons I threw it into Motion, because it would standardize the size in the case that final cut didnt like it. I need to get rid of the blur. help.
    eric

Also, if your file is LARGER in Motion, as you said, and then you drop it into a DV sequence, not only will it shrink, but it will inherit the DV 5:1 compression.
What size are you using in Motion? What settings? If you want it to look that good in FCP, you need to use the same settings in FCP. If you are adding it to a DV sequence, then you will have to live with the DV compression. OR, try it in a DV50 sequence. Better compression, higher bit rate.

  • Favourite fonts used for your DVD project subtitles?

    Hello.
I would like to know which fonts people here use as subtitle fonts mostly on their dvd projects. Which fonts through Encore, or as subtitle images, look the best and most efficient and clear? Mention also font sizes and other specs if you will.
Let me know. Having a rather normal set of fonts at the moment in use, I might be going with Encore subtitles for Verdana at the moment, 24 - 28pts, BOLD. The only other one I'm considering at the moment might be Arial Black. 86% from the top.
Better ones in mind? Should I go with something else? Suggestions...

Using a lot of Helvetica Neue here.
1 degree gaussian blur helps too.

  • Need help with adding shadows to a shape (gradient mesh?...blur tool?)

Hello. I'm an Illustrator novice, as you will be able to tell from my question. I'm somewhat familiar with the gradient mesh tool as well as the raster effects that Illustrator CS3 offers, but I can't figure out how to use them to do what I have to do.
Here's my situation. I'm creating a logo design. It is a musical note with a flame coming off of it. I want to add the appearance of the shape having shadows (yellow for the light areas, and red for the shadowed areas).
I can't get the gradient mesh tool to work because I'm assuming the shape is too complex. I understand that I could probably just create a bunch of different gradient mesh areas and just try to mesh them together, but is this necessary? ...and is chopping my shape into mulitple sections really the best method ? (it sure doesn't seem like the logical solution).
Then I tried using Illustrators blur effects. I'm concerned to even use them for a logo design, because the "blur" effect is raster, and with a logo; it's probably not wise to use anything raster, correct? Anyway...i can't get it to work. I created a shape using the pen tool to replicate the shape of the shadow. When i blur it, the blur is visable outside the original logo shape. I don't know how to make it stop at the path edge. Does anyone know how?
If anyone can please help me here, I would be more than grateful. I realize these questions probably stupid ones, but I just can't seem to figure out how to do this, despite reading tutorials and watching numerous youtube videos on the gradient mesh tool; I can't seem to figure out how to adapt it to my situation.
Here is the image I created in Photoshop. I am trying to duplicate it in Illustrator CS3.

Thanks Steve and Jet. I've spent the lasts 2 hours calling around to different print shops in hope that I can maybe trade labor for insight into their printing process. Problem is there seems to be a lack of 4 color offset printing companies who also offer spot colors. I really wish I had the money to take a class, but when I do, I will. I just contacted a few freelance designers who seem to have a lot of print work in their portfolios. Maybe they can teach me a thing or two, and in return I can drop them a few bucks or help them with something.
Jet, you've got me very concerned here. What do you mean by "It's not just a matter of selecting colors; it's also a matter of selecting the number of inks necessary to render them in the various reproduction methods in which the mark will be used"? Are you just stating the importance in using swatch books (Pantone)?
You mention the importance of a design being rendered in different forms (apparel, signs, promotional items..). So how should I go about doing this? Lets say a client wants a "mark" printed on all of the things you stated. Is it my duty to find out what printer they will be using before I submit design files to them? Is it the job of the designer to contact the print shop and get their profiles for different prints (glossy paper prints, matte paper prints, t-shirt printing, vehicle graphic printing)? This is all very time consuming, so should there not be extra charges when dealing with setting up different print settings for particular print jobs?
I've read the blogs of some successful logo designers. David Airey for example just submits his logo design to his client in eps form I believe (plus any requests). Should he be submitting a separate file for each intended use, or is this the job of the client and printer to work out?
You've got me extremely worried that I am going to really deal someone a bad hand here. As far as I know, this hasn't happened yet; but I'm glad you have me concerned. The sad part is that I do have a 2 year degree in graphic design and I didn't learn one thing about printing and it's association with color. The little I have learned is from the internet. I've checked out Amazon(dot)com for a good book on learning about color and print, but there seems to be a lack of recently written books (with reviews) regarding the subject. Can you recommend any?
I started doing freelance work because people would ask me to design a t-shirt for them, or a flyer for their small business. So I did. Now I have more people requesting my services. It's hard to turn down the money, especially in these times. But at the same time, I don't want to cause major headaches for anyone either. Until recently, I had no idea the complexity of the design to print process. Just 3 days ago, I purchased a monitor calibration device and my first set of Pantone guides. They should arrive shortly. I know, don't laugh.
My lack of knowledge regarding this whole thing has really got me questioning what I am doing. I figured all i really needed to know in Illustrator was to use the pen tool, since my use of Illustrator has been strictly for shaping logos.
There are just so many questions I have, and all can't be answered through a google search. I really don't like wasting your time with my ignorance, but I do appreciate your assistance. It takes some time for my little brain to absorb all of this, but I have been reading all I can from the endless tutorials and forum discussions available on the web. The problem I've found is that alongside the large amount of great info on the web, there is seemingly an equal amount of contradictory or partially inaccurate info as well. which only confuses me more. For example, most people say to design in cmyk for print (300dpi higher or vector). A rep from Pantone told me to create my designs using Pantones color swatch groups. Why would I want to start in Pantone? Don't all of their colors cost extra money (spot colors require a new printer plate and ink to be set up). Starting in cmyk seems like a more logical approach. Is he just trying to sell me Pantone?
Sorry for my redundant question regarding the concern for non-single colored paths not being able to join. You obviously answered my question with your example.
For your time, I would like to show my appreciation. If you wouldn't' mind leaving your paypal address, I can send ya a couple/few bucks. Books are great, but they can't answer all questions. Forums like this one are really very helpful and a great learning tool. I do realize I have to continue educating myself as much as possible. I'm not going to give up, that's for sure.
So, do you work for Adobe, or are you a graphic designer? Do you have a website with tutorials or a book I can buy lol?
It would be great to be able to see a walkthrough in the design process of a successful designer and the proper methods of designing for different forms of print.

  • I need some help with my video - need to blur some footage.

    Hi!
I was wondering if somebody could help me out with my video. I've got some video footage downloaded from the internet (with permission, of course) and I was wondering if there is any way I could blur the clip and then have it slowly fade into focus. I know how to blur the video (the Gaussian blur effect), but I basically want it to look like I've filmed the footage myself and I'm slowly turning the focus wheel until the image is in focus.
Obviously it's quite easy to do in-camera but for my film I needed footage of animals and wasn't able to film any of my own so I needed to source footage online. It's really imperative to my production that I get this blur thing working so if anyone can please explain to me the easiest way to do it then I would be extremely thankful! (That's if it is possible at all... I sure hope so)
I've searched online but so far I've only been able to find videos explaining how to blur a small section of the image (e.g. blurring out logos, faces, etc)
    Thanks a lot

For what you want to do, the 'Camera Blur' effect (Windows only)
will work much better than Gaussian Blur.
Add the effect to the clip (or to an Adjustment Layer above to the clip),
then use keyframes to change the amount of blur over a specified
    period of time.

  • My Nokia 5230 blurs, any help?

My Nokia 5230 has started to blur (there're lines shaking  vertically) when i click the red button or unlock it. This doesn't happen all he time.  I did some search and i found this is a common problem even for 5800. I have updated the firmware to the latest version. Is there any solution other than taking it to the store?

Why don't bring it to a Nokia care point immediately and get the problem out of this world?
Edit: What you could do though, if you want to eliminate software failure of any kind is to:
1: remove the memory card and check how the phone behaves without it.
2: Remove Sim and see how the phone behaves without it.
3: do a soft reset. This will wipe your phone memory so make sure you make a backup using ovi suit or nokia pc suite, or the onboard backup client (I suggest backing up to your computer).
Now, don't install your backups yet, but wait and see how the device behaves.
If the phone is still behaving like you mentioned, you will have to seek help at a Nokia care
    point.
Note that these moves are likely not to fix such behavior and that it is that last thing you should be doing, but it might be worth a try if you want to try everything before you take it to a Nokia care point.
The choice is yours! Good luck mate!
